Cybernetic Warfare - Part 3
Pastor John Grosboll

Sermon notes are a transcript from the sermon with only minor editing, retaining the conversational style.

Before continuing with where we left off yesterday, I would like to give you, for just a minute or two, a thumbnail sketch, a great, big picture of what it is all about. We are in a controversy, a battle for the minds of men. And the devil's program is to take captive the minds of men without them knowing it. We see, both in inspired writings and some of the history we looked at yesterday, how successful this captivity has been for the majority upon whom it has been attempted. I mentioned that in these prison camps in North Korea, there were no barb wire fences, only about six armed guards in one camp for about six hundred people; no extraordinary measures, but they did not escape. You see their minds were under the control of somebody else.

Now when the devil's attempts to take control of the minds of the entire world, which is what is going to happen in the end times, he is going to get control of the minds of the people of the whole world, except there will be a very few who will not go along with the program. The devil's policy in the past and at the end of time is always the same; you capture the great majority with mind control techniques so that they are under your control and the few people that you cannot get, you just wipe them out. That is what the death decree is all about. The few people that will not go along with the program, you just wipe them out. And Seventh-day Adventists for over 100 years have studied in the prophecies, and we have told the world the time is going to come that if you do not receive the mark of the beast, there is going to be a death decree. But now listen, friends, here is what people are not getting, and this is why we are studying this subject. Are you listening?

There is going to be a multitude of Seventh-day Adventists who are never going to the point where their life is threatened. Their mind will already be taken control of by the devil long before that and they will not even know about it until it is all over. That is why we need to understand this. You see, by the time the death decree comes for many people, they are already under the devil's control. They do not have to worry about that anymore.

Let's review, very quickly, a few things that we studied yesterday.

1. One of the ultimate purposes of the study of Psychology is to learn how to control people's minds, mainly other people's minds.

2. We read from Selected Messages, vol. 2, 351, 352, concerning phrenology, psychology, and mesmerism. Concerning these things Ellen White said, ". . .it is a power which will yet work with all signs and lying wonders--with all deceivableness of unrighteousness. Mark the influence of these sciences, dear reader, for the conflict between Christ and Satan is not yet ended. . . ." And she makes it very clear that in the end times the devil is going to use these things to take control of the minds of men.

3. During our time, during the twentieth century, through the study of these sciences, such as psychology, psychological weapons have been developed which by the early 1950's many people in the United States government came to the conclusion that these psychological weapons were more powerful that any kind of bomb or military weapon that we had at our disposal. And since that time, of course, our government has become very interested in studying these very things that the Communists used on our soldiers that were taken captive in Korea. I said yesterday that I wanted to start studying with you a few of the methods that are used. I stated that when you study these things, especially in the initial stages, they seem so simple and yet these simple things can completely turn a person's mind around and send him in a completely opposite direction from which he was going before. We just looked at one. We are going to look at that one, in a little bit, in a little more detail today to see how it works; to see how it can work in a very powerful manner.

The first method that we looked at was to change the terminology, to change the description, to call it by a different name; and we gave an example in Adventism.

God has commanded His ministers to give reproof and rebuke because that is the only way that we can be saved. If we receive the reproof and rebuke that God sends, Jesus says, "As many as I love I rebuke and chasten." That is the message to the Laodicean church. But if you take that message and give it a new name, and you call it criticism, that which a person would have been receptive to, they now turn their back on; they want nothing to do with it because that criticism must be an instrument of the devil.

Ellen White has a lot of things bad to say about destructive criticism or some similar other names you could give to it, such as fault-finding, condemning, being judgmental, being negative; change the terminology and you will change the way a person thinks about the subject.

I want to look at a second method, first of all, this morning. And then I want to look at the first one again and see how you can make it very, very powerful to change the way people think. They will not know what has happened, but their entire thinking will be changed on a subject.

The second method is actually more deceptive than the first. And when we study, and I read this quotation from this officer for the Nationalist Chinese Army who was subjected to this indoctrination. He said that the Communists are always turning words upside down; they use the same words, but they give it a different meaning and it has a powerful effect.

Now, I would like to go through what some of these words are. We read about them yesterday in the very first speech that was given to our prisoners of war. They said, "We are happy to have liberated. . . ." Now have they liberated anybody? No, they have taken them captive. But they changed the word. "We are happy to have liberated you from the imperialist warmongers who sent you here." Who was that? Well, not only can you change the word from "take captive" to "liberate", just say the opposite thing and make it sound completely different. But something that is even more deceptive is you take the same word, use the same word, and you give it a different meaning.

As I mentioned yesterday that they would go on a walking conference and this psychology expert, who had been trained in American universities and could speak 1950's English, would come and put his arm around this P.O.W. and say, "Now, we have heard that you have had this anti-social behavior." Now, the fact of the matter is, when we investigate this, they really did not care at all about whether their behavior was anti-social or not, that was not even the point. But using that word for their behavior put it in a different context, didn't it? If you take the word and you give it a different definition, you can control people's minds.

Is that ever done in Adventism? Let me ask you this question, has anybody ever asked you, "Do you believe that the church is going through?" What did you answer? "Well of course I believe that. But the real question is who and what is this church that is going through?" Or maybe somebody has made the statement, "Well, I believe that the ship is going through." Well, I do, too. I believe that the gospel ship is going through. Ellen White called it the "gospel ship" and it is going through. But of course, the question is what is this ship that you believe is going through? Or, very interestingly, there have been some Historic Adventist preachers who have gotten up lately and preached on video and have made statements like, "I don't believe in sarcasm." Now that sounds like a very pious thing to say. In Webster's dictionary, 1828, it says that sarcasm is, "a keen, reproachful expression and is uttered with some degree of scorn or contempt." Now let me ask you a question. If I am a Christian, in my speech, will I ever have contempt in my heart for you, even if you are my enemy? Will I have contempt in my heart for you? No. And if that is what you mean by sarcasm, a Christian will never, ever utter a sarcastic word. Because to Christians, Jesus says, "Love your enemies."

The reason I am bringing this up is when you get to studying cybernetic warfare you find that eventually what happens is that a person goes contrary to the direct command of Jesus in Matthew 7:1, "Judge not, that you be not judged." Now it is interesting that in this very same chapter, Jesus says, in verses 16-20, "You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them." Now let me ask you this question, friends, do you have authority, on the basis of the word of God, to check the fruit? Yes, you do. The fruit is a person's words and their actions. But you do not have authority to say what their motives are that made them speak those words, to judge their heart or their motives.

Now, you can judge the fruit, you can look at the outward words and say what you believe the words are. Let me give you an example. "And so it was at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, 'Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.' So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention." 1 Kings 18:27-29. In twentieth century English, that is sarcastic speech. But I do not have the authority to say whether Elijah had the feeling of contempt in his heart toward these people. I do not have the authority to do that. That is God's prerogative. And that is one of the problems that you run into when you start changing definitions of words. Eventually you get to assigning to other people what their motives are. You see, God is the judge and so it is all right for my heart and everything in my life and mind to be subject to Him; He is the judge. But if my heart and my motives become subject to other people, then they have become my judges.

And so to the person that does not have spiritual vision, it looks like that God and the devil and their agents are doing the same thing. Because God and His agents rebuke and reprove sometimes with severity, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This reproof and rebuke, sometimes, takes the form of a severe exposure of sin and evil which make it appear in a terrible light, just as Elijah did on this occasion. This reproof and rebuke is interpreted by the unconverted heart with the same motives that this person would make such remarks.

You see we judge things on the basis of our own motives and heart and experience. That is why the Bible says, "Judge not, that you be not judged." And so, this person that interprets the motives of another and the remarks of another, even of the servants of God who under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, speak the words of God in reproof and rebuke, this person interprets that as being sarcasm, fault-finding, criticism, and condemning. He has put the facts in a different context.

Now, I want to go back to the first principle again and show you how it becomes very, very powerful.

Many years ago there was a life insurance salesman in the United States by the name of Vash Young. He wrote a book entitled "The Go-Giver". In this book he wrote about a number of his experiences and one of the conclusions that he came to was, he said, "The average human being, about 85% of his decisions on any subject, is based upon his feelings or emotions, but he needs about 15% of logic and reason to justify that feeling or emotion." Now cybernetic warfare, when we say changing the terminology of the word, it involves communicating an emotional picture to a person's imagination which influences that person's decisions and gets his sympathy in a desired direction; and often this desired direction can be completely contrary to the facts. Cybernetic warfare, I will state it in different words, it involves turning the context of the thoughts by changing the emotional weight of the words. This is an extremely powerful technique, and I am going to illustrate it for you.

I could illustrate it from the very language that I have before me that they used in these concentration camps. I already mentioned the word anti-social. Does that word have some emotional connotations to it? You see, any fact of life can be described in an emotional term that would give it a positive twist or that would give it a negative twist. Is that right? That is right. And by describing certain things and giving them a positive emotional twist and by taking other things and giving them a negative emotional twist, you can very powerfully influence other people's behavior. Let me give you an illustration of one of the gimmicks that they use in these concentration camps to give our P.O.W.'s strong, negative messages from the United States.

Soldiers received mail and mail was sent to these people that were in these concentration camps and I want to read to you what happened to their mail. Their mail was controlled and this is how it was controlled. The Chinese never let a soldier get a letter that communicated warm, emotional, positive feelings. If there was a letter saying like, "We love you. We are waiting for you. We are praying for you to help you. We want you not to worry. Just come home as safely as you can." Any letter that had any kind of a positive message like that, they never received. If the letter was warm and loving and reassuring, you just did not see it, it never came to you. But if you got a subpoena for a divorce, you got that letter. If you got a "Dear John" letter from your girlfriend, she did not want to have anything to do with you any more, you got that letter. If you got a letter from a collection company because some bill had not been paid, you got that letter. If you got a letter complaining about your mother, or that somebody was ill in your family, you got that letter. And you got these letters when you were in a little mud hut in North Korea and you could do nothing about it and the only communication you got from your family and the United States was negative.

Do you know how powerful an effect this had? Let me show you what happened when these people got out. When they got out the Red Cross decided to give these P.O.W.'s, now that they were out in Japan, they were free, and the Red Cross said to these people that had been P.O.W.'s, "If you want to call your wife or your girlfriend or somebody in your family in the United States, you can make a telephone call to anybody you want in the United States, you can talk as long as you want and we will pay the bill." Do you know what happened? Approximately half of the people said, "We don't know of anybody we would even want to talk to." And so when you change the description or context so that you change the emotional weight of the words or the message that a person is receiving, you can very powerfully influence his behavior. And if you selectively make certain messages come through with positive, emotional words and others come through with negative, emotional words people will change their minds on a subject and they will not ever know what has happened. And he can be telling the truth.

Let me just illustrate that. I have tried to figure out a way to give a simple illustration of that. Let's suppose we were up in a beautiful environment and you come to me and you say, "We are going to go for a ride up here in the mountains. Would you and your daughter like to come along?" And I say, "My daughter and I would really like to do something like that. We would like to come along with you in your car and take a ride up in the mountains." And so you say we are going to have lunch up there, going to have a little picnic. So we go out and when I come out to your car and I see all the different people that are going, I notice that there are not enough seat belts to go around and I also notice that your car does not have very good tires. If I was just going by myself that might be one thing, but my daughter is along and all fathers have some feelings of responsibility for the safety of their children, and so, I change my mind.

Have you ever changed your mind after you started to do something? And so, I do not want to hurt your feelings, like I said yesterday, I grew up in a public relations training-type environment, I do not want to do anything to hurt you so I do not say anything about your car, I don't want to make any negative comments about your car, and I do not want to hurt you in any way. So I just tell you that I have decided that I would rather not go. So I and my daughter do not go with you on your ride up in the mountains and to eat lunch out in the mountains. And a couple of days later, a friend of yours calls me on the telephone and they were talking to you and they say, "You told them that I boycotted your picnic." And they were wondering why I would do anything so traitorous as this.

Now what has happened? Is it true that I did not go on the picnic? Yes. But how has my decision been described? It has been described in a very powerful, negative, emotional description. To boycott something is a very powerful, negative description, isn't it? And being a traitor is even worse; being a traitor is a capital crime. So you call me on the telephone and you tell me this and I say to myself, "What is this person talking about. And it was all because I didn't go on that picnic."

But let me tell you something. I receive letters all the time where this technique is used and I am not accusing people because I do not think that they even know what they are doing. They have grown up in a society where they have learned from psychology how to do this sort of thing and they do not even realize what they are doing.

I receive letters all the time that have dozens and dozens of descriptions, some with a very strong, positive message and some with the very strong, negative message. And I have looked at some of these things and thought how interesting. I could sit down and describe the very same facts and I could describe it with language that would flip it just the other way if I wanted to get involved in cybernetic warfare, but I am not interested in that kind of thing.

You see, where it gets you eventually, it always gets you to this point where you are judging somebody else's motives; you are judging somebody else's heart. That is where it always gets you. You state the truth, but you put an emotional twist on it to influence your listener. This is one of the most powerful techniques of cybernetic warfare that the Communists used on our P.O.W.'s. You can find example after example if you read the literature, they did it over and over again and it is very powerful to influence human behavior and to change a person's thinking about whatever subject you are trying to influence them about.

We have covered two or three techniques that can be used. I want now to come to one more. Then I want to read to you some statements in the Spirit of Prophecy and I am going to show you, in a few minutes, that the devil is going to use these kinds of techniques on God's people in the last great crisis.

There was another technique that was used by the Communists on our P.O.W.'s and as I have studied some of these techniques, you see Ellen White says that error cannot stand alone, it has to attach itself to the truth in order to have any chance of success because it will not stand by itself.

I have been very interested to notice that actually these mind control techniques very often, are a perversion of something that actually is true. In fact, that is even true of NLP. I could show you, I did not bring my book Patriarchs and Prophets with me, but I could show you a true principle of the mind upon which NLP is based, and of course, that is why it works.

If you have your Bibles, turn to the book of Deuteronomy 6:6-9. It says, "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

What is the principle here? If you really want to learn something, you expose your mind to it over and over again. What are you exposing your mind to? Are you exposing your mind to the word of God? Are you learning it? Are you meditating on it? Are you meditating on it and thinking about it day and night? Let me tell you something, experts in mind control techniques understand this principle. In fact, when our government investigated this, they said they followed this principle. Let me read to you how carefully they followed it. "In the P.O.W. camps in North Korea they had to attend some lectures. And there was a twelve-phase education program, the curriculum was printed at the Jefferson School of Social Scientists, that is on the East Coast of the United States and it is in New York City. There was a twelve-phase curriculum that was given to each and every prisoner of war so that he would know what his twenty-four months of education was going to include. Actually, before he was through, he had received more hours of formal, structured education than in his total previous education in the United States."

Now that is an amazing thing. In two years' time, these people received more formal education than they had in their previous lifetime, and most all of these people had gone to high school at least some. There is another statement about their education program. "Every morning there was a lecture. It started at 7:00 in the morning. You attended it outdoors and standing up. And it lasted four or five or six hours which is standard in many Communist teaching environments."

Now, they did not have that many principles to teach. But let me tell you something, the principles they did teach, they taught them over and over and over and over and over and over again, in every way imaginable. They even introduced it into their recreation. Now they had recreation times in the afternoons. If you wanted to draw, you could draw. Now you were not allowed to draw pictures of girls, they did not consider that art. They would not allow that; they did not want immoral pictures. But if you could draw a picture of the workers doing something like throwing off the shackles of the imperialist warmongers. Or if you could draw a picture of Harry Truman with bloody, dripping claws, gathering up us exploited tools of the imperialist warmongers and sacrificing us on the altar of profits in Korea, with General Motors and Standard Oil applauding in the background, that was considered art. You see, every phase of life involved an educational process. And if you drew the right things, you had all the time to draw that you wanted. By the way, you got rewarded, too. If you could draw the right things, you got prizes and rewards.

They had time when you could play baseball. They knew Americans liked to play baseball, and so there was time when you could play baseball. But before the baseball game, there were no girls out there twirling on batons, but there would be a bunch of boys marching around with banners and shouting slogans in unison and singing songs like "Solidarity Forever" and the Communist Internationale. So that was what you had before you played baseball. So even the baseball game was education. Every moment of your life, from morning, noon to night, was education. Now, you might be asking at this point, how could you survive in a situation like this.

Now, I can tell you from the accounts and autobiographical account of this Nationalist Chinese Army officer who went through this same process, only much more rigorous than our own men, he said there is no escape from this. Now from a human standpoint, there is no escape but I am going to show you tonight, from God's Word, how through Jesus Christ, there is an escape if you get into this kind of an environment.

But every moment of the day there was an education that was taking place. Long lectures, formal, recitations and the instruction was repeated over and over and over again. Now we would never do that kind of thing in Adventism, would we? Did you know that this principle of repeating something over and over again is one of the main principles upon which all propaganda is based! It does not matter whether it is true or false, if you hear it enough times and you are not resisting it, you will believe it. That is the way the human mind is made and the devil knows it. When you hear something, you immediately have to do one of two things; you have to decide whether to accept it or to resist it. If you do not decide to resist, if you hear it enough, you will accept it, that is just the way the human mind works.

Now let me ask you something. When you come to a meeting like this and you hear things preached and you are thinking, do you believe something on the basis of what the Word of God says or on the basis of what some preacher says?

Not too long ago, I received some videos and I did not have the time to watch them, so I asked a relative of mine if he would watch them for me and tell me what he heard. I receive so many tapes and videos and printed materials, I have a whole stack of printed materials that I would like to go through and read them all, but it is just impossible. When you get six or eight hours of videos coming to you in the mail every few weeks, it seems, you just do not have the time to listen to all of them. So I asked this relative of mine if he would listen to these videos and tell me what he heard. In fact, he took notes on what he heard and he told me something very interesting. The speaker, by the way, is a person who would consider himself an Historic Adventist preacher. On these videos he made a statement. I asked my relative, "Well did he show that that statement was true from the Bible or the Spirit of Prophecy?" My relative said, "No, he didn't prove it." But he repeated it twelve times throughout that video. Now think, what does that do? Let me tell you something, if you are there, if you are not asking the question, "Is this substantiated in the Word of God?", and you resist everything that is not substantiated in the Word of God, by the time you are through listening to that you are going to believe it. I know you will because you are going to write me a letter or call me on the telephone and tell me about it. It happens all the time. Repetition of the argument over and over again.

Well, what goes around, comes around. Let me tell you something and this is one of the most scary things for anyone who is a preacher or a teacher. There is a text that Paul wrote to Timothy on this very point. He said in 2 Timothy 3:7, that there were some people who were "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." And he says in verse 13, "But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived." Now this is one of the most scary things about cybernetic warfare that I have ever studied. When you use these principles to get control of somebody else's mind, in the process of controlling them, your own mind comes under the same control of whatever you are teaching or preaching until you believe the same thing. It does not matter whether it is true or false. You are going to believe it. And if you preach something, or teach something that is not founded on the Word of God, the time is going to come when you yourself are going to believe it so thoroughly that it will be impossible to get it out of your mind.

And that, friends, is one of the most scary things that is going on in Adventism today. If you repeat something over and over again, and you preach it or teach it and it is not true, the time comes that you yourself believe it so thoroughly nobody can convince you of your error, because you have said it so many times. You have repeated it so many times that it is ingrafted in your mind. That is the way the human mind is made. As I studied this subject, in my heart I have said, "Lord, help me, by Your grace, to always say exactly what is the truth. Help me not to just take the facts and turn them and use emotional language to make people think what I want them to think about the facts." It is dangerous. In the effort to get other people to think that way, you will influence yourself. You will not only deceive somebody else, you will deceive yourself so thoroughly you will probably lose your soul. This is a very, very dangerous activity. Ellen White says that, "Those who teach the people to regard lightly the commandments of God, sow disobedience to reap disobedience." What you sow, what you disseminate you are going to end up reaping yourself, you are going to believe it yourself.

Now I mentioned that I was going to show you how that this type of thing, taking emotional language, describing facts in emotional language was going to be used. That is one of the most powerful techniques of cybernetic warfare that is going to be used on God's people in the last great crisis. Ellen White describes it. She describes it in more than one place, but the place I am going to read from is Great Controversy, 592, it is very interesting to read the entire context of this passage. But here in Great Controversy, 592, you will find the following words, "Those who honor the Bible Sabbath will be denounced as enemies of law and order. . ." You are an enemy of law and order. Whose law are you an enemy of? Well, you are an enemy of the Sunday law, obviously, so you are an enemy of order. That is what you are going to be accused of. By the way, in our society, does that have a strong, emotional message to turn people against you? It certainly does!

And then she says we will be accused of "breaking down the moral restraints of society. . ." It is your fault that we have all this crime and corruption in our country. That is the accusation that will be made. And then further, she says, we will be accused of "causing anarchy and corruption. . ." By the way, are those emotional words, too? Yes, they are. They have a very strong, emotional impact and when things like that are broadcast on radio and television, you will find that people will accept it and immediately their emotions will be stirred to a white hot heat. And if you have become a victim of any of this sort of thing already, the Lord has just allowed that to happen in your life to harden you up, to get you ready for the real attack that is coming. She says we will be accused of "calling down the judgments of God upon the earth. Their conscientious scruples will be pronounced obstinacy. . ." You will not go along with this law, you are obstinate.

Another description, you will be described as "stubbornness". Does that have a strong, negative connotation? Is that an emotional word? Yes it is. And "contempt of authority. They will be accused of disaffection toward the government." You are anti-government. "Ministers who deny the obligation of the divine law will present from the pulpit the duty of yielding obedience to the civil authorities." They will be quoting from Romans 13 and from 1 Peter 2 and saying, "See, you are not in harmony with the Bible."

Then she says, "In legislative halls and courts of justice, commandment keepers will be misrepresented and condemned. A false coloring. . ." Now that is what ends up when you start twisting things and giving an emotional load of words to describe something, to make it come to your advantage. It ends up being a "false coloring be given to their words; the worst construction will be put upon their motives."

Notice that is where it always gets you in the end. Before it is over, when you start doing this sort of thing, you are assigning motives to somebody else and that is exactly what Jesus said not to do. I do not have a right to come to you and tell you what your motives are for doing something. When you study how brainwashing or cybernetic warfare works, you will find that that is always where they get to eventually. They are assigning motives to somebody else for why they are doing what they are doing.

Well, right now, the devil is trying to get people practiced in doing this sort of thing so that they will be ready to do it big time at the end. In the church, he is constantly tempting God's people to be making statements of this kind so they will be in the habit of thinking this way and talking this way and whenever they hear facts about something that they will put some kind of emotional message with those facts.

Let me read to you some statements from the Spirit of Prophecy about that. Here is one from Christ's Object Lessons, 190, "When one who has wandered far in sin seeks to return to God, he will encounter criticism and distrust. There are those who will doubt whether his repentance is genuine, or will whisper, 'He has no stability.' " Now, somebody is whispering about you that you have no stability, what kind of an effect does that have? First of all, it is judging your character, but secondly, would it be easy to get discouraged under that kind of a situation with people talking like that about you? That is not all they will say. She says these people will say, "I do not believe that he will hold out." I do not believe this person is going to make it, we better just stand back and wait and see. "These persons", she says, "are doing not the work of God but the work of Satan, who is the accuser of the brethren. Through their criticisms, the wicked one hopes to discourage that soul, and drive him still farther from hope and from God. Let the repenting sinner contemplate the rejoicing in heaven over the return of the one that was lost. Let him rest in the love of God and in no case be disheartened by the scorn and suspicion of the Pharisees."

Well, other things that I was very interested in when I studied the accounts of what happened to our P.O.W.'s and the description that was given by this high government official in regard to it, was how he described the situation with compromise. He is talking about public relations and the desire to be liked by everybody. He says, "Fifty years ago, they would have said, don't make a deal with the devil and it would have been perfectly clear. It seems that in talking about compromise and getting along with people today and being non-aggressive and everything being quiet and nobody raising his voice, if possible, that we have gotten compromised on a minor level mixed up with compromise on the level of principles."

You see, there are some things, let's give an example. Suppose we are at a church meeting and we are talking about what time they are going to start Sabbath School. And maybe some people want to start it at 9:30 and some want to start it at 9:00. Well, are you going to compromise on something like that so that you can have harmony and unity with everybody? Well, yes. It is not a matter of moral principle whether you start Sabbath School at 9:00 or 9:30. You can make your own decision, and you can do whatever will make everybody the happiest. But now when you are talking about compromise on the level of the Law of God, there is no room for any compromise then. The most fundamental principles, (we are going to study this more tonight if the Lord wills) the most fundamental principle that is cut off or destroyed by these mind control techniques is that it destroys the love in a person's heart for their neighbor.

In fact, that is mentioned right here when our government tried to analyze what happened in these camps to these people. They talk about this principle over and over again. They wonder what has happened to our young people that we do not understand that every human being, as we have been taught in the United States, we are not Atheist or Marxist, we believe, they said, that in our country we have tried to found our country and operate our country on Judeo-Christian principles which involves loving your neighbor. How come we forgot all about that? What has happened to our young people? They do not understand that any more! I want to go into that in more detail tonight if possible. But as I have studied it, I have wondered to myself, is it possible that that very same thing could happen to Adventists? We know the truth.

I was reading this this morning, if Jesus has really taken up His abode in my heart and in my life, I will have love for my neighbor. And I will not be able to isolate myself from my neighbor and say as they successfully did in these camps, get everybody thinking that their survival was just their own business and whatever happened to the other guy is his business and it will just have to be. That is a violation of the most basic principle of the Ten Commandments, love to God and love your neighbor.

A little over a hundred years ago, Ellen White was in Europe and there was a church that was having this problem. And as I thought this through, I realized in my mind, if I do not have the genuine love of Jesus for my neighbor, I am in a position that my mind can be taken over and I will not know what has happened. Ellen White had a vision. It is called the Vohwinkel Vision. I want to read to you some statements from that vision. She said, "Last night I dreamed that a small company were assembled together to have a religious meeting. There was one who came in and seated himself in a dark corner, where he would attract little observation. There was not a spirit of freedom. The spirit of the Lord was bound. Some remarks were made by the elder of the church and he seemed to be trying to hurt someone. I saw a sadness upon the countenance of the stranger. It became apparent that there was not the love of Jesus in the hearts of those who claimed to believe the truth and there was, as a sure result, an absence of the Spirit of Christ and a great want both in thoughts and feelings of love for God and for one another. The assembling together had not been refreshing to anyone." Ellen G. White in Europe 1885-1887, 276. By the way, when you do not have love in your heart, that is what happens. In these concentration camps, it got so bad, people got so discouraged, they got what our government calls "Giveupitis" and when a man got giveupitis, he was dead within 48 hours.

"As the meeting was about to close, the stranger arose and with a voice that was full of sorrow and of tears, he told them that they had a great want in their own souls, and in their own experience, of the love of Jesus which was present in large measure in every heart where Christ took up His abode. Every heart renewed by the Spirit of God would not only love God but would love his brother, and if that brother made mistakes, if he erred, he must be dealt with after the gospel plan. Every step must be followed according to the directions given in the word of God. . . . The stranger continued by asking several questions: You seem willing to wound and bruise the hearts of one another, is this the pattern Jesus has given you? Where is His manner of dealing? Do you find yourselves sustained in having so little love and forbearance, so little patience for your brethren? Have you forgotten the words of Christ, 'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this all men shall know that you are My disciples, if ye have love one for another?' [John 13:34, 35] 'He that has my commandments and keeps them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.'John 14:21. You are not cultivating love to God or love to your brethren. Be careful how you treat the purchase of the blood of Christ. There will be need of plain and faithful reproving of evil works, but let the one who takes this work upon him know that he is not separated from Christ by evil works himself. He must be spiritual and restore such an one in the spirit of meekness. Unless he has this spirit, he has no duty to reprove or correct his brothers for he would create two evils in the place of curing one. . . . That which distinguishes the character and conduct of Christians from all others is the principles of holy, Christlike love, which works in the heart with its purifying influence." Ibid., 277

Let me tell you, friends, unless you and I have the love of Christ in our hearts, we are living in the time, what happened in these prisoner of war camps and these different wartime situations as I described to you what happened in North Korea? What has happened in many other similar situations where people that have been highly trained in these mind sciences have attempted to take control of the minds of other people, what is going to happen? Instead of just happening to a few hundred or a few thousand in a prisoner of war camp, in the end time, something similar to this is going to happen to the whole world. The vast majority are going to get taken control of and they will not even know that they have been taken control of. They will come to God's people and tell us,(I have it here in Great Controversy, I did not read it, but here is what they are going to think.) It says, "Papists, Protestants and worldlings will alike accept the form of godliness without the power, and they will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world and the ushering in of the long-expected millennium." Great Controversy, 588, 589

Oh, they are going to get taken control of and they will not even know it and they will say, "We are about to the enter the most wonderful period of human existence that there has ever been."

And who is going to escape this over-mastering, over-powering delusion that is going to take captive the minds of men? It is so powerful that it is described in the prophecies, in Revelation 13 it says, "All on the earth will worship him whose names are not written in the Book of Life."

In Revelation 12:9 it says that the devil is going to deceive the whole world. In Revelation 16:13 and 14 it says that they are going to go to the whole world and gather them together for the battle, but they will not think they are getting together for Armageddon, they will think they are going to get together at Jerusalem for the new millennium of peace. Their minds will be under the control of somebody else and they will not even know it.

How are you going to escape this? Well, I used to think, naively, I would study my Bible so that I will know the truth. Well, I believe in studying the Bible so that I can know the truth, but I want to tell you, friend, that unless the truth about Jesus and the love of Jesus has taken possession of your heart, all the theoretical knowledge is not going to hold you in the battle we are getting into.

The fundamental basis of the government of God, the most fundamental thing about His government is, 1) love to God and 2) love your fellow man. Those are the two fundamental principles. And if those principles are not in your heart and in mine, and if you are not manifesting those principles in your family or where you work or with the people you associate with, you are not going to make it. Your mind is going to get taken control of by somebody else. And as I have studied about this, in my mind, I have had my heart cry, "Lord, I want genuine love for You in my heart and I want to have a love for my fellow man that nobody will be able to take away."

"That which distinguishes the character and conduct of Christians from all others is the principle of holy, Christ-like love which works in the heart with its purifying influence. The true Christian will work the works of Christ in giving expression in deeds of love one to another. With this living, abiding, working principle in life and in character, no one can resemble the world. If you know the character and works of Christ, you will know the disposition and conduct of Christians. Christ hated evil so much that sin and evil met a strong rebuke from His lips and from His example. While He hated sin, He loved the sinner. How much greater strength you might have had as sons and daughters of God had you loved God supremely and your neighbor as you love yourself. How much higher ground you might stand upon if you had been following on to know more and more of the truth and gathering more and more divine light to shine forth in good works to all around you. Your works are not pleasing to God, but pleasing to the enemy." Ellen G. White in Europe 1885-1887, 277

I have to ask myself that question. How is it with my works, with my words, in my family, the people that I work with, the people that I associate with? How are my works, my words, are they pleasing to God or pleasing to the enemy? Do the angels write a record that my words and my works give evidence that my life is in harmony with the Law of God and do I love Him with all the my heart, soul and mind and that I love my neighbor as myself? And if you actually have those two principles in your mind, you will never break one of the Ten Commandments. She went on to say, she was quoting from this stranger. By the way, who do you suppose this stranger was? I have always supposed that it was Jesus Christ Himself. You will find this, by the way, in Manuscript 32, 1887, and also the book Ellen White in Europe, 276-8. And this stranger continues and says, "You have lessons to learn in the school of Christ before you will be fitted for heaven. Your self, your ways, your sharp traits of character makes you unskillful in dealing with minds and hearts. If you allow yourselves to be dictatorial, accusing and judging your brethren and with unsanctified hearts and unholy tempers seeking to mend their wrongs, you do unskillful work and drive souls away from the service of Christ. You must take hold of God while with the other hand, in love, you lay hold on the erring and the sinner and draw them to Jesus. Pray with them, read with them, feel for their souls, love them and never let go of them. This is the love Jesus has expressed for you. You must ever strive for unity, forbearance and love, never draw apart, but press together binding heart to heart and making supplications in the Spirit and the power of God will work in your midst and many souls will be brought to the truth through your influence."

Now, friends, I believe in missionary work and I believe in proclaiming the gospel and the Three Angels' messages to everybody in the world. I believe in that with all my heart, but if we are going to get the kind of results that God wants us to have, we have to have this. We have to have love for God with all of our heart, soul, and mind and we have to love our neighbor as our self. And I want to tell you, friends, in the complicated situations that you can get into in this world, sometimes it takes a lot of prayer to know what Jesus would do in the situation in which I find myself right now. But that is a question that you are going to have to get down on your knees with your own Bible and pray through and ask the Lord to teach you how and what to do.

There was a Bulgarian pastor who was taken captive by the Communists and this man did not get brainwashed. They tried over and over again to break him down. But he was a Christian. He said the whole time that he was in these prison camps, and he was in there for about 13 or 14 years, they considered him the number one enemy, worse than any criminal in the country. And he said that really was true. He really was the number one enemy for them because what he represented would destroy their system. And he told this experience about the beatings and the torture and the different ways they tried to break him down and he said that he noticed that these people, these soldiers that were administering this torture, it happened after a while, after they had done it over and over again to other human beings, they became just like animals. And at the very time that these people were becoming like animals, no human feelings or emotions left, he said, among some of the prisoners some amazing things happened. He said there would be men who, because they had been beaten, that their jaws would be broken and they could not take a piece of bread and eat it, so a fellow prisoner would take the bread and break it up into a little, tiny piece and put it into their mouth so that they could get some nourishment. And he said that among these prisoners, as the others were becoming like the devil and Satan, among the prisoners there were men who become God-like.

Some were becoming like the devil, but there were some who were developing a God-like character. They were developing genuine love for their fellow man that nobody could take away. And I want to tell you, friends, in the midst of the great crisis that we are entering right now, pretty soon there is going to be a world full of people that will be like the devil in human flesh. But in the midst of all of this horror, there will be some people that will become an exact reflection of the character of Jesus Christ. And, friends, it is going to be, if you live until the end, it is going to be one way or the other. You are going to go all the way one way or the other. The only way that you are going to survive it is if you have the love of Jesus in your hearts. You love God with all your heart, soul, and mind and you have love for your fellow man and nobody can induce you for anything to do something to hurt or harm one of your fellow men because you love other people with all your heart. And if you have that love in your heart, they will not be able to break you down. That is the only thing, friends, that will hold you.

If you want the Lord Jesus to put that love in your heart, I want to tell you, friends, He came and died on the cross so that He would have the right to take His righteousness and His love and put it in your heart. And if you want Him to do that this morning, I want to invite you to kneel down with me and pray.
