Q&A – Is it right for Seventh-day Adventists to celebrate Christmas?

Christmas is a pagan holiday with a Christian name. In fact, the Pagan culture has had a great influence on our civilization, such as the names of the days of the week. However, since Sunday was named for the sun god and Monday for the moon god, we do not hesitate to live our normal lives on those days and call them by their given pagan names. We do not worship on Sunday, but we do not hesitate to pray on that day or to do missionary work.

Consider when Jesus was here on earth when one of the Pharisees asked Him if they should pay taxes to Caesar. Jesus told them, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21. Under the guidance of our heavenly Father we have to live in this world and cope with who and what we live with.

Regarding Christmas, we have already established the fact that it is of pagan origin, but we cannot ignore the fact that it is here. It is the time of the year when people take vacations, especially schools. It is the time of the year when people, businesses, and social groups are giving greetings and presents to one another. Many do this just for prestige, some for love, some for other advantages, but gifts and greetings are prevalent. Because the world and churches are doing these things at Christmas time, would it be wrong for a Seventh-day Adventist to give a gift to someone or to take a vacation at Christmas time or to wish someone happy holidays?

I do believe it is wrong to ascribe the joy of Christmas to the birth of Christ, for that is false theology, and children should be taught the truth at all times. Never, never lie to a child. Tell them the way it is—there is no Santa Clause. They can’t help but see and hear about it, but they must know the truth. However, it is not wrong to give children gifts because you love them, or even to give gifts for appreciation to your friends and loved ones. Just don’t forget that the best Friend we have is Jesus, and He deserves the best gift.

Now let’s learn what the Lord has revealed to us. “While urging upon all the duty of first bringing their offerings to God, I would not wholly condemn the practice of making Christmas and New Year’s gifts to our friends. It is right to bestow upon one another tokens of love and remembrance if we do not in this forget God, our best Friend. We should make our gifts such as will prove a real benefit to the receiver. I would recommend such books as will be an aid in understanding the Word of God, or that will increase our love for its precepts.” The Review and Herald, December 26, 1882.

Pen of Inspiration – Dream of the Temple and Lamb

While in this state of despondency, I had a dream that made a deep impression upon my mind. I dreamed of seeing a temple, to which many persons were flocking. Only those who took refuge in that temple would be saved when time should close; all who remained outside would be forever lost. The multitudes without who were going about their various ways, derided and ridiculed those who were entering the temple, and told them that this plan of safety was a cunning deception, that in fact there was no danger whatever to avoid. They even laid hold of some to prevent them from hastening within the walls.

Fearful of being ridiculed, I thought best to wait until the multitude dispersed, or until I could enter unobserved by them. But the numbers increased instead of diminishing, and fearful of being too late, I hastily left my home and pressed through the crowd. In my anxiety to reach the temple I did not notice or care for the throng that surrounded me.

On entering the building, I saw that the vast temple was supported by one immense pillar, and to this was tied a lamb all mangled and bleeding. We who were present seemed to know that this lamb had been torn and bruised on our account. All who entered the temple must come before it and confess their sins. Just before the lamb were elevated seats, upon which sat a company looking very happy. The light of heaven seemed to shine upon their faces, and they praised God and sang songs of glad thanksgiving that seemed like the music of the angels. These were they who had come before the lamb, confessed their sins, received pardon, and were now waiting in glad expectation of some joyful event.

Even after I had entered the building, a fear came over me, and a sense of shame that I must humble myself before these people; but I seemed compelled to move forward, and was slowly making my way around the pillar in order to face the lamb, when a trumpet sounded, the temple shook, shouts of triumph arose from the assembled saints, an awful brightness illuminated the building, then all was intense darkness. The happy people had all disappeared with the brightness, and I was left alone in the silent horror of night.

I awoke in agony of mind, and could hardly convince myself that I had been dreaming. It seemed to me that my doom was fixed; that the Spirit of the Lord had left me, never to return.

Dream of Seeing Jesus

Soon after this I had another dream. I seemed to be sitting in abject despair, with my face in my hands, reflecting like this: If Jesus were upon earth, I would go to Him, throw myself at His feet, and tell Him all my sufferings. He would not turn away from me; He would have mercy upon me, and I would love and serve Him always.

Just then the door opened, and a person of beautiful form and countenance entered. He looked upon me pitifully, and said: “Do you wish to see Jesus? He is here, and you can see Him if you desire it. Take everything you possess, and follow me.”

I heard this with unspeakable joy, and gladly gathered up all my little possessions, every treasured trinket, and followed my guide. He led me to a steep and apparently frail stairway. As I began to ascend the steps, he cautioned me to keep my eyes fixed upward, lest I should grow dizzy and fall. Many others who were climbing the steep ascent fell before gaining the top.

Finally we reached the last step, and stood before a door. Here my guide directed me to leave all the things that I had brought with me. I cheerfully laid them down. He then opened the door, and bade me enter. In a moment I stood before Jesus. There was no mistaking that beautiful countenance; that expression of benevolence and majesty could belong to no other. As His gaze rested upon me, I knew at once that He was acquainted with every circumstance of my life and all my inner thoughts and feelings.

I tried to shield myself from His gaze, feeling unable to endure His searching eyes; but He drew near with a smile, and laying His hand upon my head, said, “Fear not.” The sound of His sweet voice thrilled my heart with a happiness it had never before experienced. I was too joyful to utter a word, but, overcome with emotion, sank prostrate at His feet. While I was lying helpless there, scenes of beauty and glory passed before me, and I seemed to have reached the safety and peace of heaven. At length my strength returned, and I arose. The loving eyes of Jesus were still upon me, and His smile filled my soul with gladness. His presence awoke in me a holy reverence and an inexpressible love.

My guide now opened the door, and we both passed out. He bade me take up again all the things I had left without. This done, he handed me a green cord coiled up closely. This he directed me to place next my heart, and when I wished to see Jesus, take it from my bosom, and stretch it to the utmost. He cautioned me not to let it remain coiled for any length of time, lest it should become knotted and difficult to straighten. I placed the cord near my heart, and joyfully descended the narrow stairs, praising the Lord, and telling all whom I met where they could find Jesus.

This dream gave me hope. The green cord represented faith to my mind, and the beauty and simplicity of trusting in God began to dawn upon my soul.

Keys to the Storehouse – Desire to Be Blameless

Heavenly Father, please work in me both to will and to do of Thy good pleasure that I may do all things without murmuring and disputing or arguing. Heavenly Father, I desire to be blameless and harmless, sincere as Thy child while I walk today in this world. Help me to shine as your light today. Let your Spirit be upon me that I may always esteem others better than myself and that I may do nothing through strife or for personal glory. (Philippians 2:13–15, 3, 4)

There are many times when we want to do our own thing and put ourselves over and above others. If you find yourself heading in that direction, be still. Send up this prayer that our Heavenly Father may change that selfish desire into one like His of selflessness.

Remember the promise in Psalm 37:4: “Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” When we pray the above prayer with a full earnest desire, He will gladly answer that yearning with the filling of His Spirit subduing our own will. Praise the Lord for God’s word and His promises which are always sure.

“Jesus has opened the way to the Father’s throne, and through His mediation the sincere desire of all who come to Him in faith may be presented before God.” The Great Controversy, 489.

We are all striving with hearts yearning to fill that need to reach our Heavenly Father. Through Jesus Christ that is possible. We should never excuse our shortcomings but always take them to God immediately. Now is the day of salvation and we never want to help keep a smile on Satan’s face because of our neglect to go to our Father through Jesus.

“If those who hide and excuse their faults could see how Satan exults over them, how he taunts Christ and holy angels with their course, they would make haste to confess their sins and to put them away.” Ibid., 489.

Go to our Heavenly Father right now and ask Him to do of His good pleasure so that you won’t argue or murmur or think that you are better than others. Tell Him that you want to be His child and that you want His light to shine through you to others. Don’t wait another minute. The longer you wait, the more Satan boasts, taunting and ridiculing our Savior because of the unChristlike behavior of those claiming His name.

He is there waiting for each of us to come to Him and ask for help.

Remember: “A divine element combines with the human when the soul reaches out after God and the longing heart can say, ‘My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him.’ Psalm 62:5.” Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 19.

He is waiting for you to use this Key.

Heart Analysis

The end of another year is approaching, and as you look over the past year and see what has been accomplished you may ask yourself, has my faith in the God of heaven strengthened? Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17).That faith is then tested and tried and is strengthened by being exercised with trials.

Have you “fought the good fight of faith” (II Timothy 4:7) through each trial and gained the victory over those corrupt and sinful habits that we all struggle with? “Every man has corrupt and sinful habits that must be overcome by vigorous warfare. Every soul is required to fight the fight of faith.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 6, 1111.

When you are tested and tried, your own heart’s desires come forth and you are drawn either heavenward or earthward. I trust that the trials of this past year have drawn you nearer to heaven and not nearer to this world and that temper or impatient spirit has become subdued and you have experienced victory through Jesus Christ. Consider the perseverance of an eagle and remember what Isaiah 40:31 says: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” As we “wait” upon the Lord, we expect or anticipate something from Him and we are given strength like the wings of an eagle. Read the following and praise the Lord!

“The eagle of the Alps is sometimes beaten down by the tempest into the narrow defiles of the mountains. Storm clouds shut in this mighty bird of the forest, their dark masses separating her from the sunny heights where she has made her home. Her efforts to escape seem fruitless. She dashes to and fro, beating the air with her strong wings, and waking the mountain echoes with her cries. At length, with a note of triumph, she darts upward, and, piercing the clouds, is once more in the clear sunlight, with the darkness and tempest far beneath. So we may be surrounded with difficulties, discouragement, and darkness. Falsehood, calamity, injustice, shut us in. There are clouds that we cannot dispel. We battle with circumstances in vain. There is one, and but one, way of escape. The mists and fogs cling to the earth; beyond the clouds God’s light is shining. Into the sunlight of His presence we may rise on the wings of faith.” Education, 118, 119.

Reflect on whether God’s purpose was accomplished in your life this past year. “It is God’s purpose to manifest through His people the principles of His kingdom. That in life and character they may reveal these principles, He desires to separate them from the customs, habits, and practices of the world. He seeks to bring them near to Himself, that He may make known to them His will.” Testimonies, vol. 6, 9.

Have you separated yourself from the customs, habits and practices of the world so God could make known to you His will? And did you find out that His will for you and me is to restore in us His image?

Knowing that God has begotten us again unto a hope that is living should give us the love and thankfulness in our hearts that we cannot but praise Him in our daily lives. In Ezekiel 37:1–10, it says that God will bring life again into dead bones. While you are walking in the midst of the ways and practices of this world, then you are in the middle of a bunch of dry bones. Only the God of heaven can give you life. You can find life only in heavenly places. There is no life when you walk in the footsteps of the god of this world, doing what you want, thinking what you want to think because heavenly thoughts have been blocked from entering your mind. The god of this world does not want you to take time to think on things of God: “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8. These are the thoughts that keep our hearts in the heavenly places where God dwells. Is that where you want to be?

Those who walk in the ways of this world, deviating from the straight, appointed road, are dead in trespasses and sins and have fallen short of the glory of God, His character.

The way of the world is a very dangerous path to walk on. It is without Christ and without hope. Satan, the leader on this path, has lost the companionship of God and the heavenly angels and wants you to also lose that companionship.

Have you remembered to pray, Lord, “hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not”? Psalm 17:5. Your footsteps will not slip if you are sincere in this prayer.

How often have you said, “I can do all things,” but forgot where that strength comes from?

In Ephesians 4:1, we are asked to walk worthy, to live or conduct ourselves worthily, of the vocation wherewith we are called. That vocation or calling is to be a Christian, Christ-like, and to reveal the principles of the heavenly kingdom where our citizenship is. How has your conduct been? Did you conduct yourself in a Christ-like manner during the trials or the testing and proving of your faith, and what kinds of fruits did you see come forth from yourself? Did you allow a few sour responses of impatience or anger, etc., arise or did you allow the Holy Spirit to bear fruit of holiness?

The first fruit of the Holy Spirit is love. It would be beneficial to review the meaning of that love spoken of in I Corinthians 13:4-8, and compare it with your own life. We are told to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12, last part). Jeremiah 17:9 speaks about the heart being “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Often we cannot see our own shortcomings, so as David did, it is good always to pray, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23, 24. Pray this prayer and the Lord will allow an experience in your life that will show you what is really in your heart, whether it is heavenly or earthy. So watch and pray, and our gentle Savior will give you grace to see yourself and then give you power to overcome.

“The influence of the Holy Spirit is the life of Christ in the soul. We do not see Christ and speak to Him, but His Holy Spirit is just as near us in one place as in another. It works in and through every one who receives Christ. Those who know the indwelling of the Spirit reveal the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Bible Commentary, vol. 6, 1112.

This year is just about over and we have much to be thankful for. Our most wonderful God is rich in mercy and He loves us so much. He has brought us through another year—even though we have left Him out of our hearts and lives at times! Oh, behold what manner of love and mercy!

Our Heavenly Father deserves a song of praise and thanksgiving from our hearts. We will never realize how much He has protected us. “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.” Psalm 34:3. “Let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Hebrews 13:15.

Praise God for Jesus Christ who is our peace, our mediator who is in the Most Holy Place in heaven right now, waiting to hear from us. He is waiting to grant us freedom from this world and its trespasses and sins. Kneel before him now and ask forgiveness for your trespasses and sins. The Holy Spirit is putting that prayer into your heart right now. Accept it and go to Jesus right now while He is still there. One day soon He will stand up and say, “It is finished!”Then it will be too late; we will no longer be able to have our sins forgiven because we waited too long.

This year is ending. Let us re-commit our hearts to Him. Let us claim the promise that, “If we will trust Him, and commit our ways to Him, He will direct our steps in the very path that will result in our obtaining the victory over every evil passion, and every trait of character that is unlike the character of our divine Pattern.” Our High Calling, 316. For what more can we ask?

“The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” Romans 13:12.

Let each one of us find ourselves at the end of this year sitting in heavenly places with Him, our Savior, our friend and our brother. Let us also begin a new year in that same place with God’s blessings.

The Patience of Christ

There are various reasons given for the apparent delay of the second return of Jesus.

Justifiably, most if not all reasons given may very well be correct. However, I would like to highlight one most important reason that could very well be the reason of all reasons why Jesus has not returned. So just to make us think a little I would ask, What is Jesus waiting for to return to this earth? Will He wait forever? Some Christians constantly say they need time to change or to give up sin. How does this attitude influence the return of Jesus or the individual’s salvation? This waiting attitude of Christ as a question forms the substance of this message!

In reference to Christianity in general and more specifically as a religion, Jesus Christ the founder has been looking for a revelation, a demonstration of something from its inception, and might I say for well over two thousand years. He has been waiting, expecting, anxiously looking for, but He has been grossly disappointed. What is He waiting and looking for with great longing?

The Nature of the Problem and the Problem

Jesus identifies the problem and spells out its nature in His address to the end time church—Laodicea. We read of this in the last book of the Holy Scriptures. “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” Revelation 3:14–17.

He provides the solution as recorded: “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” Revelation 3:18–21.

The Laodicean message is for Seventh day Adventists—God’s servant in Manuscript 33, 1894, puts it this way, “The message to the Laodicean church is highly applicable to us as a people. It has been placed before us for a long time, but has not been heeded as it should have been. When the work of repentance is earnest and deep, the individual members of the church will buy the rich goods of heaven. Oh, how many behold things in a perverted light, in the light in which Satan would have them see.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 961.

“The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition. How plainly is pictured the position of those who think they have all the truth, who take pride in their knowledge of the Word of God, while its sanctifying power has not been felt in their lives. The fervor of the love of God is wanting in their hearts, but it is this very fervor of love that makes God’s people the light of the world.” Faith and Works, 82, 83.

The Problem

God’s end time church is seriously affected by self-deception and being self-conceited. We do not understand ourselves. The faithful and true witness states, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” Revelation 3:15–17.

Like the Ephesian Christians, the Laodiceans have experienced a great loss tantamount to spiritual death. They lost their first love—the love of Jesus. Her problem is that she is devoid of the character of Jesus which can easily be identified when an individual possesses faith and love, the righteousness of Christ and the spirit to discern between right and wrong, good and evil.

Often times Christians are caught up with the externals, which often reflect significantly that they are destitute inwardly. We may note this important quotation, “You may manifest great zeal in missionary effort, and yet because it is corrupted with selfishness, and tastes strongly of self, it is nought in the sight of God; for it is a tainted, corrupted offering. Unless the door of the heart is open to Jesus, unless He occupies the soul temple, unless the heart is imbued with His divine attributes, human actions when weighed in the heavenly balances, will be pronounced ‘Wanting [Daniel 5.27].’ The love of Christ would make you rich; but many do not realize the value of His love. Many do not realize that the spirit which they cherish is destitute of the meekness and lowliness of Christ, destitute of the love that would constitute them channels of light.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 961.

The Solution

We read the priceless advice given to the Laodiceans, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.” Revelation 3:18.

Who is the faithful and true witness?

He is the vendor of priceless treasures. This thought is brought out clearly in the following statement: “The great Vendor of spiritual riches is inviting your recognition. The Saviour comes with jewels of truth of the richest value in distinction from all counterfeits, all that is spurious. He comes to every house, to every door; He is knocking, presenting His priceless treasure, urging, ‘Buy of me.’ ” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 964.

Jesus says, “Buy of me”—“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” Isaiah 55:1, 2.

What are the goods being sold?

Gold tried in the fire

White raiment

Eyesalve

What do these represent?

“Gold tried in the fire” represents love or faith that works by love which ultimately purifies the soul. This is the primary merchandise being offered to professing Christians!

“The gold tried in the fire is faith that works by love. Only this can bring us into harmony with God. We may be active, we may do much work; but without love, such love as dwelt in the heart of Christ, we can never be numbered with the family of heaven.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 158.

Spelled out even clearer, “The gold here recommended as having been tried in the fire is faith and love. It makes the heart rich; for it has been purged until it is pure, and the more it is tested the more brilliant is its luster.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 88.

Once again God’s messenger explains that this “gold tried in the fire,” is indeed the love of Jesus. The following is recorded, “The Lord knocks at the door of your heart, desiring to enter, that he may impart spiritual riches to your soul. He would anoint the blind eyes, that they may discover the holy character of God in his law, and understand the love of Christ, which is indeed gold tried in the fire.” The Review and Herald, February 25, 1890.

This gold tried in the fire has almost disappeared from the church of God. You see, this love is not superficial, spasmodic, earthly, or governed by circumstances. It is free from everything that savors of being human. It is pure and holy. It is of heavenly origin. It has diminished from the church because it cannot prosper where self reigns.

“Love of self excludes the love of Christ. Those who live for self are ranged under the head of the Laodicean church who are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot. The ardor of the first love has lapsed into a selfish egotism. The love of Christ in the heart is expressed in the actions. If love for Christ is dull, the love for those for whom Christ has died will degenerate. There may be a wonderful appearance for zeal and ceremonies, but this is the substance of their self-inflated religion. Christ represents them as nauseating to His taste.” Our High Calling, 348.

Consequently, because self is so prominent in the church today, when trials come, which, in the providence of God, will come, many are affected and end up defecting.

Ellen White makes this very clear. She tells us, “I was pointed to the providence of God among His people and was shown that every trial made by the refining, purifying process upon professed Christians proves some to be dross. The fine gold does not always appear. In every religious crisis some fall under temptation. The shaking of God blows away multitudes like dry leaves. Prosperity multiplies a mass of professors. Adversity purges them out of the church. As a class, their spirits are not steadfast with God. They go out from us because they are not of us; for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, many are offended.

“Let these look back a few months to the time when they were sitting on the cases of others who were in a condition similar to that which they now occupy. Let them carefully call to mind the exercise of their minds in regard to those tempted ones. Had anyone told them then that notwithstanding their zeal and labor to set others right, they would at length be found in a similar position of darkness, they would have said, as did Hazael to the prophet: ‘Is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing?’ II Kings 8:13.

“Self-deception is upon them. During the calm, what firmness they manifest! what courageous sailors they make! But when the furious tempests of trial and temptation come, lo! their souls are shipwrecked. Men may have excellent gifts, good ability, splendid qualifications; but one defect, one secret sin indulged, will prove to the character what the worm-eaten plank does to the ship—utter disaster and ruin!” Testimonies, vol. 4, 89, 90.

This “gold tried in the fire” is what plants a person in Christ. As the apostle Paul puts it, “rooted and grounded in Him.” Ephesians 3:17. This love is the stabilizing element that keeps the Christian permanently connected to Jesus.

A question that really requires our prayerful attention is, “Why is it that many who profess to have faith in Christ have no strength to stand against the temptations of the enemy?—It is because they are not strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. The apostle prays ‘that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.’ Ephesians 3:17–19. If we had this experience, we should know something of the cross of Calvary. We would know what it means to be partakers with Christ in His sufferings. The love of Christ would constrain us, and though we would not be able to explain how the love of Christ warmed our hearts, we would manifest His love in fervent devotion to His cause.” Our High Calling, 365.

Faith and love enables us to do something very important. What is it?

“Buy faith and love, the precious, beautiful attributes of our Redeemer, which will enable us to find our way into the hearts of those who do not know Him, who are cold and alienated from Him through unbelief and sin.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 964. [Emphasis supplied.]

The power of Christ’s love is revealed: “The love that was in the heart of Christ is to be in our hearts, that we may reveal it to those around us. We need to be daily strengthened by the deep love of God, and to let this love shine forth to those around us.” The Upward Look, 159.

Therefore, when Laodicea’s condition is critically analyzed, the verdict is that the church is devoid of the love of God, thus the heavenly merchant man who has been waiting and longing has declared, “You are neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm, and if you do not ‘buy of Me gold,’ I will spew you out of my mouth or I will reject you!” Revelation 3:15, 16.

The white raiment represents the righteousness of Jesus Christ. “Only the covering which Christ Himself has provided can make us meet to appear in God’s presence. This covering, the robe of His own righteousness, Christ will put upon every repenting, believing soul. ‘I counsel thee,’ He says, ‘to buy of Me … white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear.’ Revelation 3:18.

“This robe, woven in the loom of heaven, has in it not one thread of human devising. Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this character He offers to impart to us. ‘All our righteousness are as filthy rags.’ Isaiah 64:6.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 311.

What does it mean to be clothed with Christ’s robe of righteousness?

“When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart, the will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be clothed with the garment of His righteousness. Then as the Lord looks upon us He sees, not the fig-leaf garment, not the nakedness and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righteousness, which is perfect obedience to the law of Jehovah.” Ibid., 312.

How do we receive Christ’s righteousness?

“By receiving His imputed righteousness, through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, we become like Him. The image of Christ is cherished, and it captivates the whole being.” God’s Amazing Grace, 96.

It is evident that self must be surrendered to Christ, and the Holy Spirit be allowed to do the work of cleansing so that which is the soul’s need may be met.

What does the righteousness of Christ consist of?

“Righteousness of Christ imputed to men means holiness, uprightness, purity. Unless Christ’s righteousness was imputed to us we could not have acceptable repentance. The righteousness dwelling in us by faith consists of love, forbearance, meekness, and all the Christian virtues. Here the righteousness of Christ is laid hold of and becomes a part of our being. All who have this righteousness will work the works of God.” Testimonies on Sexual Behavior, Adultery, and Divorce, 134.

“The righteousness of Christ consists in right actions and good works from pure, unselfish motives. Outside righteousness, while the inward adorning is wanting, will be of no avail.” This Day With God, 182.

We can conclude on this point by agreeing that “the white raiment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ imparted to the sinner. This is indeed a garment of heavenly texture, that can be bought only of Christ for a life of willing obedience.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 88.

“The eyesalve [represents, or] is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern between the evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise. God has given His church eyes which He requires them to anoint with wisdom, that they may see clearly; but many would put out the eyes of the church if they could; for they would not have their deeds come to the light, lest they should be reproved. The divine eyesalve will impart clearness to the understanding.” Ibid., 88, 89.

I must make this point clear to our understanding that according to the Faithful and True witness—Jesus Christ—the Laodicean Christians are not totally blind. “The Laodiceans,” Ellen White states, “were not entirely blind, else the eyesalve would have done nothing to restore their sight, and enable them to discern the true attributes of Christ. Says Christ, By renouncing your own self-sufficiency, giving up all things, however dear to you, you may buy the gold, the raiment, and the eyesalve that you may see.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 965.

Why anoint the eyes? “He would anoint the blind eyes, that they may discover the holy character of God in His law, and understand the love of Christ, which is indeed gold tried in the fire.” Ibid., 965.

This is important because while we are blessed with 20/20 vision to see about our self-interest and to glorify self, at the same time we are blind to see Christ and His wonderful love which we so desperately need. Because we are so focused on self we are totally destitute of the love of Jesus; therefore, when our love for God and our fellowman is tested, we utterly fail. We give up on Christ and we abandon our fellow human beings.

What we need to understand is that the more we promote self, the more we fail to realize how wretched, miserable, poor, blind, naked and lukewarm we are.

But, let us not forget or be confused that there is love in the church, but Christ, the owner of the church still says to us, “Buy of me gold tried in the fire.” This conveys the fact that what the church calls love is not the genuine love. Jesus’ love holds up under all circumstances; it remains unchanged no matter how severely tried or unkindly treated! This is the gold tried in the fire.

The current love present in the church, which makes God nauseated, is a love that is destructive, which cultivates evil and only more evil, and which originates in the synagogue of Satan; it’s a love that cherishes hate, resentment, pride, jealousy, fault-finding, gossiping, envy, evil-surmising, strife, bitterness, an unforgiving spirit, deception, hypocrisy, unbelief and all manner of unchristlike attitudes and behavior! It’s a love that is pretentious. So Christ once again says, buy of me gold tried in the fire. Buy the genuine article, for this is the only one that will endure when all else fails. “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” I Corinthians 13:13.

Ellen White reminds us, “It is difficult for us to understand ourselves, to have a correct knowledge of our own characters. The word of God is plain, but often there is an error in applying it to one’s self. There is liability to self-deception and to think its warnings and reproofs do not mean me. ‘The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?’ Jeremiah 17:9. Self-flattery may be construed into Christian emotion and zeal. Self-love and confidence may give us assurance that we are right when we are far from meeting the requirements of God’s word.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 332.

So, having said all this, I would like to go back to my original question and provide the answer. What is it that Christ is waiting for and longing for before He returns to this earth? We read in the Gospel of Mark, “But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.” Mark 4:29.

What fruit is Christ here referring to? The apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatian Christians identifies this fruit: “The fruit of the Spirit is love.” “This fruit can never perish, but will produce after its kind a harvest unto eternal life.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 68, 69.

“Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own.

“It is the privilege of every Christian not only to look for but to hasten the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:12, margin). Were all who profess His name bearing fruit to His glory, how quickly the whole world would be sown with the seed of the gospel.” Ibid.

Satan knows this; consequently, this is what he has been doing: “The enemy well knows that if we do not have love one for another, he can gain his object, and wound and weaken the church, by causing differences among brethren. He can lead them to surmise evil, to speak evil, to accuse, condemn, and hate one another. In this way the cause of God is brought into dishonor, the name of Christ is reproached, and untold harm is done to the souls of men.” This Day with God, 165.

So Jesus has been waiting, longing to see His love manifested in the lives of all His followers, and this in turn would hasten His coming. Will He wait forever? No!

In closing I leave these words with you: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” I John 3:1–3.

Jesus pleads to you and me, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20. Will you open to the heavenly merchant man? “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Revelation 3:15, 16.

Price of Peace

I Thessalonians 5:2 says, “The day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.” Now, what will the people be saying when they are surprised? “Peace and safety” [verse 3], or as we noted in other translations, “Peace and security.” Does God intend that His people shall be engulfed in this great disaster? No! We are to be saved from this overwhelming surprise.

In order to be saved we must be prepared. We must understand what is leading the world to these disasters and we must be kept, not merely from the end result, but from all the causes along the way. That is the purpose of these studies, to help us understand the basic causes that are leading the world to Armageddon.

We found in Isaiah 8 that because of the fear of war and the fear of want, men are being led to extensive combinations. God plainly states that His people are not to enter into those confederacies. While the people of this world are talking confederacies, where will God’s people be looking?—upward, to Him. That’s the answer. “When we look to man, trouble grows. When we look to God, trouble goes.” And we must learn that day by day in our own personal experience.

In The Review and Herald, November 4, 1965, there is a most interesting report of a statement made by a leading Roman Catholic Cardinal commenting on the Pope’s visit to the United Nations. He says, “It was a striking thing that no responsible voice has been raised in protest against the Pope’s visit. As recently as ten years ago a papal visit to the United Nations would have been considered an onslaught and an invasion, but today, people are simply thrilled at the invitation of the Pope to visit the UN and his willingness to do so. The reason for this is that people are so frightened of war that they’re willing to try anything in desperation.”

The Cardinal spoke more truth than he realized. He put his finger right on the point. It is not a sincere turning toward God or religion in the right sense that is motivating the world to welcome the leadership of the papacy. What is it? Fear! We read in Isaiah 8, verse 13, speaking to God’s people, “Neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.” Are we afraid of war? No. Our Father is the King of this universe.

Notice the awful price that the people of this world are paying and will continue to pay, driven by their fear of war and fear of want. They are selling their souls for a mess of pottage, and they won’t even get the mess of pottage. Esau got his lentils, but the people of this world are not even going to get that for which they sell their souls.

What are they selling to get peace? What are they going to lay down in order to accept the leadership of the Pope of Rome? “All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him.” “All the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation 13:8, 3. Verse twelve shows that the United States is the one that leads out in causing all the world to accept this leadership of the papacy. What is the price of all this?

Proverbs 23:23 is right on the point: “Buy the truth, and sell it not.” Can truth be bought and sold? Apparently. In Revelation 3:18, the True Witness says, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire … and white raiment … and eyesalve.” The eyesalve is the discernment to know what’s right and what’s wrong. “Buy the truth.” But once you have bought it don’t sell it! This is the terrible mistake the popular churches are making today. In Reformation days men like Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Knox, and Wesley bought the truth, and it led them to separation from Rome. Today the Protestant churches are selling that glorious heritage. They are selling the truth which their fathers sacrificed everything to buy. That’s the price they are paying to get back in favor with Rome in order that the Pope may save them from a third world war.

Do you know that some of the creeds of Christendom are being revised in order to say this—watch this little change—no longer “the Bible is the Word of God,” but the revised statement is, “The Bible contains the Word of God.” Which do you believe? John 17:17 says, “Thy word is truth.” The Bible is the Word of God. And there’s an infinite difference between those two things, my friends. The inroads of modernism, of higher criticism, are weakening the faith of Protestants in the Scriptures. These have prepared the way to accept a human court of appeal, in the person of the papacy, to interpret what is truth.

The servant of the Lord tells us that the reason the book, The Great Controversy, deals with the controversies of the past, the apostasy in the early ages, the rise of the papacy, the Dark Ages, and the reformation is simply this: What has been will be again. The last conflict into which we are even now entering is the climax of an age-long controversy. The issues are the same. The unseen forces are the same. And Rome that led the Christian world away from the Bible and set up the Pope as the representative of Christ; Rome which in the Dark Ages slew the saints of God, is the same Rome under whose leadership all the world will be united to war against God’s remnant.

On page 102 of The Great Controversy, we are told about the experience of John Huss, who was burned at the stake because he became a reformer. He had been a papist, but as he studied the Bible, he came to a certain conclusion, and this is the thing I want you to notice. “God speaking in the Bible, and not the church speaking through the priesthood, is the one infallible guide.” Here is the difference between Roman Catholicism on the one hand and true Protestantism on the other. And this is the truth which the Protestant world is selling that they may buy the favor of the papacy. And it is the fear of communism, the fear of atheism, the fear of war; yes, it is fear that is driving them to compromise.

Now notice the attitude of the true believers at the time the papacy was in process of formation. Here are the faithful few who would not go along with the Bishop of Rome and his hierarchy. “To secure peace and unity they were ready to make any concession consistent with fidelity to God; but they felt that even peace would be too dearly purchased at the sacrifice of principle. If unity could be secured only by the compromise of truth and righteousness, then let there be difference, and even war.” The Great Controversy, 45. This has been the position of Christ’s followers in all ages: not to make trouble unnecessarily, not to push minor points of difference; but when it comes to a vital principle, no ecumenical idea justifies the selling of truth.

In the seventeenth chapter of John, verse 17, we have the Saviour’s earnest prayer for unity among His believers, but in that same prayer is this text we have already noticed: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” So the great question before Protestantism today is this: Which is more important, truth or unity? And there are thousands, yes millions, who are willing to sell the truth in order to secure unity. May I read this again: “To secure peace and unity they were ready to make any concession consistent with fidelity to God; but they felt that even peace would be too dearly purchased at the sacrifice of principle. If unity could be secured only by the compromise of truth and righteousness, then let there be difference, and even war.”

Now, the next sentence is meaningful: “Well would it be for the church and the world if the principles that actuated those steadfast souls were revived in the hearts of God’s professed people.” The Great Controversy, 46. The only thing, dear ones, which will keep us from being engulfed in this world movement for security and peace, the ecumenical movement, is a love for truth, so that we would rather have any war than give up truth. Our desire for peace must never degenerate into a willingness to compromise. And this must be manifest in the details of our personal lives. If we get in the habit of sacrificing principle so that we will be well thought of, we are on the road to Rome. No question about it. The remnant will be those who overcome by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and who love not their lives unto the death (Revelation 12:11).

Speaking of this apostasy in the early ages, we read in The Great Controversy, 49, “Almost imperceptibly the customs of heathenism found their way into the Christian church.” How did this compromise come about? “Almost imperceptibly,” that is, unnoticed, like the twilight falls. Well, this was the twilight, and as the darkness settled upon the Christian world, it came “almost imperceptibly.” That is the devil’s game, to make the advances toward the world so small that the person who resists one of those advances is looked upon as silly, odd, unreasonable, and stubborn.

And it isn’t always in direct defiance to what God says that this compromise begins. “Rome began by enjoining what God had not forbidden, and she ended by forbidding what He had explicitly enjoined.” The Great Controversy, 290. Rome began by telling people to do things that God had not plainly said they shouldn’t do. Let me illustrate. Here is Christmas for the birth of Christ; Easter for the resurrection. Is there a verse in the Bible that says, Don’t celebrate the birthday of Christ; don’t celebrate the day of His resurrection? No. So Rome began by introducing things that weren’t expressly forbidden in the Bible. She ended by forbidding what He had definitely told people to do, and the Sabbath is the great outstanding example. When men get in the habit of accepting as religious guides those who tell them to do more than the Bible says, they will inevitably end up following those guides to do what the Bible has forbidden. And this is the path that Protestantism, so-called, has been following for many years.

“As the Protestant churches have been seeking the favor of the world, false charity has blinded their eyes. They do not see but that it is right to believe good of all evil; and as the inevitable result they will finally believe evil of all good.” The Great Controversy, 571. This is what is responsible for their current attitude toward the papacy. The popular thing in the Protestant churches today is to pat everybody on the back, and for the moment even Seventh-day Adventists are riding on the tide of popular favor, the ecumenical spirit. Many in the popular churches are ready to welcome Seventh-day Adventists as a part of the great Christian world. But the same spirit that leads them to welcome us is leading them to welcome Rome. We need to look very carefully at the hand that’s stretched out to us, remembering that it is also offered to the Vatican. Let us not be flattered by the spirit of compromise. That hand which has been extended toward Rome will eventually be used, not to welcome us, but to smite us.

We need to look deep into our own hearts and see if there is anything in our souls that responds to this spirit of compromise. Are we weary of the war? Are we tired of the toil? Do we long for release from the conflict, and will we, in order to buy that release, sell the truth? That’s the question. Will we give up conscientious convictions; will we soft-pedal the Word of the Lord? God forbid!

Now, I mentioned that the world is not going to get the mess of pottage for which it sold out. Oh, my friends, this world that is selling the truth in order to buy peace from the Pope of Rome, see what it’s going to wake up and find! Revelation 19:19, “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war.” This power that has supposedly led the world to peace is going to lead it instead to war! This is the war against God. “I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.” And so while the nations of this world are following after the phantom of peace, they are led to the greatest war of the ages.

Again, Revelation 16:13, 14, “I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” Notice this in Testimonies, vol. 7, 182, “The world is filled with storm and war and variance. Yet under one head—the papal power—the people will unite to oppose God in the person of His witnesses.”

For a short time this world is going to be united. The next sentence says, “This union is cemented by the great apostate.” “Under one head—the papal power”—all the nations will unite to oppose God in the person of His witnesses. Where will you and I be? On one side or the other. We’ll either be with Jesus and His remnant church conscientiously standing for what the Word of God says, all ten of His commandments, or else we’ll be with the great popular movement which has sold the truth in order to buy peace. They are going to sell the truth, but they are not going to get peace. “When they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them … and they shall not escape.” I Thessalonians 5:3. [Emphasis supplied.]

Oh, friends, when the voice of God ends the captivity of His people, when His law is seen in the sky, there will be a terrible awakening among all these churches that have combined together in compromise to buy peace. The union which the great apostate has cemented will fall to pieces. The great city will be divided into three parts and every man’s hand will rise up against the hand of his brother. Read the awful picture in Revelation 16, and Jeremiah 25, and in The Great Controversy in the chapter, “The Desolation of the Earth.” See the breakdown of civilization. See the churches in chaos and the members tearing the ministers and the priests limb from limb. The whole world is going to be plunged into the scenes of the French revolution. Peace? Oh, no. Not peace. Sacrifice of the truth can never lead to peace.

And so it means much to you and to me to answer the question, Do we love the truth enough to die for it, enough to live for it? Or are we willing to compromise?

Dear Lord, write upon our hearts Thy truth. Deep in our souls put a love for it so that we would rather die than sacrifice on principle. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.

From Darwin to Hitler

In the 1900s Charles Darwin presented new theories that were different than any other since the world began. One was the theory of evolution. It developed, became accepted, and eventually led to greater crimes being committed in the 20th century than ever before recorded.

In his autobiography, Charles Darwin stated that if man has no belief in God or an afterlife, his rule of life can only be to follow the strongest impulses and instincts which are within him. Morality, being based on biological instincts and not on any moral code or law, was believed to change over time. His theories were widely accepted throughout the intellectual world, especially in the European universities. Not only were they accepted in regard to biology, but Darwin’s theories of evolution began to be applied to ethics.

Thinkers in Europe drew several conclusions from Darwinism relating to morality and ethics. The concept of free will was undermined because Darwin’s theories were interpreted to mean strict determinism; and, behavior and moral character are, at least in part, hereditary. Some thought that behavior was totally hereditary.

The idea of an overruling purpose in the universe was destroyed and all phenomena were thought to be the result of the laws of chance. Morality, they said, has evolved.

Natural selection was thought to be the force that produces morality since morality is thought to be relative.

The idea of inherent human rights, and objective moral standards, were undermined by Darwinism. The idea became widespread in scientific and medical circles by 1900 that human moral behavior is determined largely by biological instincts inherited from one’s ancestors.

These new ideas that were becoming so widespread by 1900 had tremendous implications. Firstly it affected education, then justice, the criminal or penal code, the marriage policy, the sexual practices of any population that accepted these theories, and also control of reproduction and a person’s attitude toward personal responsibility.

If the human race had evolved and was still evolving, it was thought that some races had evolved more than others, and therefore were superior. It was also thought that the inferior races would eventually cease to exist through the natural victory and survival of the fittest. In other words, the evolution of higher life forms depends on the suppression and destruction of lower life forms.

Darwinism offered a secular view of life and death to replace a religious view. The new view was that human life was valuable only as it contributed to the higher evolution of the human species. Therefore, if a person could not contribute to the improvement of the community, his life was not so valuable. It was thought that human life was not intrinsically sacred and inviolable as in Christian thought.

As people’s conceptions of the importance and value of human life and the significance of death were changed, a debate erupted over such issues as to the morality of infanticide, euthanasia, abortion, and suicide.

Prior to Darwin’s time, the sanctity of human life was dominant in European thought and was referred to as the right to life. Christian churches explicitly forbad murder, infanticide, abortion and suicide. Until then there had been no significant debate in Europe over the sanctity of human life.

Another idea that developed from Darwinism was to help evolution along by selective breeding of humans rather than depending on natural selection. This development was called Eugenics. Its basic idea was to promote the superior human beings, the ones with the best genes, to have many children and to prevent the inferior human beings, the ones with inferior genes, from having children at all and thus improve the human race.

Eugenics, founded on the premise of human inequality, was popular in the United States, as well as in Europe. Eugenics’ philosophy taught that some races were not as highly evolved as other races, and hundreds of thousands of people were involuntarily sterilized to prevent them from having children, because of their supposed defects.

Christianity, on the other hand, taught the brotherhood of all races that descended from common ancestors, namely Adam and Eve.

The earliest advocates of involuntary euthanasia, infanticide, and abortion were those devoted to the Darwinian world view. Not only this, but less than one year after Darwin published his theory, there were German sources who were justifying racial extermination. This was considered a natural unavoidable consequence of the human struggle for existence—the survival of the fittest and the destruction of the less fit.

This is commonly called racism and it led to racial wars.

Adolph Hitler embraced an evolutionary ethic that made Darwinian fitness and health the only criteria for moral standards. The Darwinian struggle for existence, especially the struggle between different races, became the sole arbiter for morality. Hitler denied that anyone could escape the universal struggle for existence. He stripped individuals of any rights and argued that the destruction of the weak by the strong was humane. He believed Darwinism provided the moral justification for infanticide, euthanasia, genocide, and other policies that before had been considered immoral. The justification was to promote the highest evolution of the most highly developed or superior race which, in his opinion, was the Arian race of northern Europeans.

Darwinian theory provided the mechanism to bring about this highest evolutionary development:

  • Increase the population of the most fit.
  • Decrease the population of the less fit.

The means to bring about these two goals eventually included promotion of maximum sexual reproduction of the favored, and sterilization of the less fit. Both voluntary and involuntary sterilization were practiced and, finally, directly murdering the less fit.

The result of this was the largest, most destructive war that had ever occurred between nations. It resulted in:

  • 350,000 compulsory sterilizations of people for their supposed defects. This does not include the tens of thousands in the United States.
  • Over 70,000 put to death by physicians as euthanasia.
  • A whole generation of young people, demoralized by perverted ideas concerning the sanctity of the marriage and the family. That has had a demoralizing influence on the entire world right up until the present day.
  • Over 6,000,000 people violently murdered because they were considered an inferior race.
  • Over 50,000,000 lost their lives in the most deadly war this world has ever seen.

Many people think that it does not matter whether or not you believe in evolution, but this is not an insignificant ideal when considering its results.

The God of heaven considered this question of origins and how we got here of extreme importance.

In the Old Testament there is one document that was:

  • Spoken by God’s own voice, publicly.
  • Written by God’s own finger in tables of stone.
  • Declared to be God’s covenant and His law.

This document was declared by Jesus to be of imperishable obligation. He said that it would be easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a part of a letter of this document to fail.

“And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle (that is just part of a letter) of the law to fail.” Luke 16:17. The One who made that statement was the One who had created the heavens and the earth and everything in it.

With His own voice, from Mt. Sinai, God spoke His law to the people Himself; then wrote the Ten Commandments, with His own finger, in tables of stone for a permanent record. That document, His law, the foundation of His government, was not entrusted to any man to tell the people. God Himself spoke it and also wrote the document. In regard to that law the Bible says, “And I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever: nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it … that men should fear before him.” Ecclesiastes 3:14.

When God gave the world His law, the Ten Commandments, and He wrote it in tables of stone, one commandment is longer and more detailed than all the rest. It is the only commandment that in the Hebrew language has over fifty words. Some of the commandments, for instance, the seventh and eighth commandments, “You shall not commit adultery” and “You shall not steal,” have just two words in the Hebrew language.

The fourth commandment is longer than all the rest, and it is right in the heart of the law. This commandment explains the origin of the world and the human race.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God: in it you shall do no work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.” Exodus 20:8–10.

The reason for the fourth commandment is given in the last verse of the commandment.

“For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day: therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:11.

It is so important for every human being to know where we came from, how we got here, and who we are, that God devoted more words to explaining the origins than any other moral precept. This commandment is in the heart of the ten. In ancient documents it was customary to place the seal of the document in the center.

The Sabbath will be a major issue in the last days of this world’s history. Part of the Sabbath commandment is quoted in the prophecy of Revelation with reference to the last days. The controversy over whether this world came into existence by the word of God is predicted to be a controversial issue in the last days. Eighteen hundred years before it happened, Peter predicted that in the last days people will scoff at the idea of creation and will not believe that this world came into existence by the word of God. See II Peter 3:3–7.

Bible students who make a careful study of the Bible know that the number seven is the number of spiritual perfection. In the book of Revelation we find another very significant number that is going to attract the attention of almost the entire world—666.

Within the Christian church there is some confusion over which day is the Lord’s day; however, the Bible is quite specific on this subject. Reading right from the fourth commandment we see that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.” Exodus 20:10.

Within the most detailed of all of the Ten Commandments, we are told that the seventh day is the Lord’s day.

In Revelation 14:12, it says, “Here is the patience of the saints: here are those that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”

In the last days there will be some people who are called saints, or holy people, and they are going to keep the commandments—all ten of them. The book of Revelation also points out a terrible crisis that will come into the world in the last days. It talks about a beast power that will have the number 666. In essence, the controversy in the very last days of earth’s history is going to be over whether or not God is the Creator of the world and whom you will worship, the Creator or the beast. The beast, of course, is the anti-christ.

The Bible clearly identifies the God of heaven as the creator.

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power; for you created all things, and by your will they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:11.

“Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that are in it, and the earth, and the things that are in it, and the sea, and the things that are in it.” Revelation 10:6.

This world has a Maker. For thousands of years, until this theory of Darwinism about 150 years ago, almost the whole human race of all religions knew this. The book of Revelation, a book specifically for the people living in the last days, gives an appeal to worship God as the Creator. Revelation 14:6–12 describes three angels coming with a final message of mercy to be given to the inhabitants of this world.

The latter half of the book of Revelation focuses on these Three Angels’ Messages, and in Revelation 16 you will find that the people who reject these warnings are going to receive seven last plagues.

Revelation 18 describes what is going to happen to all the people in the world who reject the second angel’s message, and Revelation 19 describes Jesus coming and the destruction of those refusing the warnings.

Reading further on into Revelation 20 you will see that the people who accept the Three Angels’ Messages, even if they lose their lives through doing so, are taken to heaven to be with the Lord during the millennium.

The focal point of the latter half of the book of Revelation relates to the last three warnings of mercy to be given to the earth by the angels, and they are worthy of special study.

The first message says, “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment has come: and worship him who made heaven, and earth, the sea, and springs of water.” Revelation 14:7.

As we approach the last days of earth’s history there will be only two camps. Every person in this world is going to chose to be part of one of them, worshiping God as the Creator or worshiping the beast—the anti-christ. The fourth commandment says to remember the Sabbath. Acknowledging this and keeping this day holy is to worship the creator God.

Those who worship the anti-christ will believe they are worshipping Christ, but will find out too late they are worshiping the wrong Christ.

God is the Creator. The Bible says that in the beginning “God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:3.

After He created light, on the second day He created the firmament, the heavens that surround the earth—the envelope of oxygen, the air that surrounds our earth. And then He divided the waters from the waters and He caused the dry earth to appear, and then it says, “Let the earth bring forth the grass, and trees, and all manner of plants.” Verse 11. That was the third day. The Lord had everything planned, exactly what He was going to do before He started.

On the fifth day the fish and birds were created, and then on the sixth day God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures.” Verse 24.

By the sixth day He had created a paradise and when everything was ready, for His crowning act, God said, “Let us make man in our image; male and female he created them.” Verses 26, 27.

After Adam and Eve had been created, notice what the Bible says: “Thus the heavens and the earth and all the host of them were finished.” Genesis 2:1.

Creation was finished. And “on the seventh day God ended his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. Then God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because in it he rested from all his work which God had created and made.” Genesis 2:2.

The seventh day was the Sabbath, the day God rested after creating this world. The Sabbath is God’s love gift to the entire human race. He blessed it, He sanctified it, and He made it holy (Genesis 2:3). Only God can make something holy. God made that day, the seventh day, holy. God rested on it as an example for the human family. It is a holy day.

In Revelation 1:10, John says he “was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day.”

“For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Matthew 12:8.

“Therefore the Son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:28.

“The Son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” Luke 6:5.

The Lord’s Day is the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a gift to the human family instituted in Eden and not something that was added because of sin, like the ceremonial law. It was given to Adam and Eve and their descendants in Eden. Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for man. See Mark 2:27.

When Adam and Eve were put out of the Garden of Eden because of their sin, everything was lost to them but two things. They still had the gift of marriage and the gift of the Sabbath.

Many years later, when God spoke His law and wrote it on two tables of stone on Mount Sinai, He wrote the Sabbath right in the middle, right in the heart of the law. It says:

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Exodus 20:8–10.

Jesus kept the Sabbath. “So he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.” Luke 4:16.

A few days before the crucifixion the disciples wanted to know what would happen in the future and what sign would they have of His coming and the end of the age. Jesus gave them a sermon about future events. He told about the destruction of Jerusalem, and how they would have to flee. Notice what He said, “And pray that your flight may not be in the winter, or on the Sabbath.” Matthew 24:20.

Jesus was here referring to an event that took place 66 years after His crucifixion.

After Pentecost, we find over and over again that the apostles continually kept the Sabbath. After Paul had preached the gospel to the Jews (Acts 13:42), some Gentiles who had heard about this requested that he also preach to them the following Sabbath for they wanted to hear his message as well. Many years after the crucifixion, the Sabbath was still being kept by the believers and he never suggested that he preach to them on Sunday. But, “on the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.” Acts 13:44.

These people were Gentiles; they were not Jews. The disciples, the apostles, and the converted Gentiles always kept the Sabbath. On one occasion the apostles were in a new area evangelizing to convert people from their idolatry to Christianity. There was no church or place to worship so they went to the river side, “And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the river side, where prayer was customarily made, and we sat down, and spoke to the women who met there.” Acts 16:13.

Again, “They came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews: And then Paul, as his custom was, went into them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the scriptures.” Acts 17:1, 2. In the book of Acts there are over 80 references to Paul keeping the Sabbath, and no reference of him keeping any other day.

Some may question that over time there may have been a calendar change or time has been lost and ask the question, Which day is the Sabbath? Certain events in the Bible prove that time has not been lost. Christ was crucified on what the Bible calls preparation day. Today that is called Friday, and most Christians refer to that day as Good Friday.

In Luke 23:54–56 and Luke 24:1, it says that it was the day of the preparation. They took Jesus down from the cross, then put Him in the tomb and then they went home. It says, they kept the Sabbath according to the commandment, and then came back the first day of the week, and it was the resurrection.

Jesus was raised on the first day of the week, Sunday. The day between the preparation day and the day of the resurrection was the Sabbath.

The Dictionary meaning of Saturday is: the seventh day of the week, following Friday. There is no known evidence that any time has been lost.

Interestingly, in 108 languages of the world, the word for the seventh day of the week is Sabbath. The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word that means a rest day.

“Moreover I also gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them, that I am the Lord that makes them holy.” Ezekiel 20:12.

This is something worthy of consideration. Paul says that, “without holiness nobody is going to see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14.

It is impossible for a human being to become holy, as we do not have power to do this ourselves; it is something that only God can do: sanctify—make holy. God only can give the power, the ability, to be obedient.

God says that He gave His people the Sabbath that they would have a sign between them and know that He is the Lord, that He is going to make them holy.

Keeping the Sabbath is a sign between God and His people. God promises them, “This is a sign between Me and you; I am going to make you holy.” If God makes you holy, you will inherit the gift of eternal life. Only holy people will be in heaven.

In heaven there are no wars, there are no penal institutions, there are no punishments. Why? Because the people there are holy people and they do not need police, air force, armies, navies, wars, prisons, and things like that to make them do what is right. They are holy people.

The Bible teaches that even in heaven God’s children are going to keep the Sabbath. Nobody will be in heaven who argues with the Lord about what day they will keep, because everybody in heaven has decided to keep the Ten Commandments. Notice what it says:

“And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, all flesh will come to worship before me, says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:23.

Facts about the Sabbath:

  • It is Jesus’ day; He created it (John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2).
  • It is the day that His people at the end of the world will be keeping. Those who will worship the beast and are connected with the number 666 will be worshipping on another day. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8; Mark 2:28; Luke 6:5).
  • Jesus is the law giver.

Jesus Christ was the One who gave Moses those two tables of stone. Jesus Christ existed from the days of eternity. He came to this world and was born a baby in Bethlehem, but that One who was born, His days were from old, from everlasting (Micah 5:2).

Concerning the Father, it says in John 1:18 that no man has seen the Father at any time. It was Jesus Christ who is the authority behind the law and who revealed His glory to Moses on Mount Sinai.

It was Jesus who commanded the Sabbath, and while here on this earth, He perfectly kept it holy.

He said to the Jews, “Which of you convinces me concerning sin [breaking the law]?” John 8:46. They couldn’t answer. They would have nailed Him immediately if He had been a Sabbath breaker, but they had nothing to say because Jesus perfectly kept the Sabbath when He was on the earth.

Jesus commanded His disciples to keep the Sabbath. He said, “Pray that your flight be not in winter, nor on the Sabbath day.” Matthew 24:20.

All the apostles were Sabbath keepers. The Sabbath is His sign of allegiance, “a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.” Ezekiel 20:20.

The Bible says, “The Sabbath is a sign between me and you the Lord says, that I am the Lord that will sanctify you [make you holy].” Ezekiel 20:12.

Remember, according to Hebrews 12:14 only those who are holy will go to heaven. You cannot make yourself holy. Only God can make you a holy person. A holy person is a person who keeps all of the commandments, because “the law is holy.” Romans 7:12.

A holy person is a person whose life is in harmony with the law. An unholy person is a person whose life is not in harmony with the law. For example, the seventh commandment says, “You shall not commit adultery.” A holy person will not commit adultery.

It is the same for every other commandment. If you are a holy person you will obey all the commandments. And the Sabbath is a promise between God and you that if you keep this day, God says He will make you a holy person.

The Sabbath will continue in heaven. “It is going to come to pass, that from one Sabbath to another, from one new moon to another, all flesh are going to come to worship before me.” Isaiah 66:23.

There will be no controversy over which day is the Sabbath. The Sabbath will be a delight to all, a day of communion with our God in remembrance of creation.

The same appeal made to His disciples the night He was betrayed is given to you and me in this last generation: “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15.

Jesus tenderly calls and offers the invitation, “Come unto me, all of you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle, and lowly in heart: and you will find rest unto your soul.” Matthew 11:28, 29.

It doesn’t sound like the survival of the fittest; it is an invitation to all, young and old, rich and poor, free or imprisoned, no matter what race or color or social standing or physical condition. It is an open invitation to anybody to come.

And then Jesus says, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:30.

There is a better way than any survival of the fittest. There is a better way than the struggle between the races. There is a better way than competition and rivalry, and trying to figure out by competition who is better than whom. There is a better way.

Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”

For about 6,000 years there has been a great controversy in the universe over who is going to be Lord— the head of the beast power, which is Satan, or Jesus Christ.

The theory of evolution came from his satanic majesty to deceive the human race and to get people into an all out struggle with each other, to destroy one another. But Jesus says to all the weak, to all those who are considered inferior in our world, “Come unto me, all of you, all of you that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The rest He offers here is rest from your burden of sin. Sin is the heaviest burden you can carry, one that will kill you. Jesus will give you rest from the restlessness that is in this world. He says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”

The choice is yours. The difference between Darwin, and Hitler, and the survival of the fittest and the invitation of Jesus Christ is great.

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve; … as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15.

Editor’s Letter – The Law of Moses, Part III

Adventists believe that Ellen White was not only a prophet, but more than a prophet. Except for Jesus Christ there have only been three times in the history of the world, that we know of, that God has sent to His people a messenger who was more than a prophet. The first time was Moses. See Numbers 12. The second time was John the Baptist. See Matthew 11:9. The third time was when God sent a special messenger, to help His people prepare for the second coming of Christ. He sent Ellen G. White who said: “My work includes much more than the word ‘prophet’ signifies.” Selected Messages, Book 1, 32. Either she must be much more than a prophet, or a fraud.

Ellen White was given instruction that would enable God’s people to go all the way to the Holy City—all the way to the coming of Christ. Anything that is essential for us to know from the Bible to be ready for Jesus to come will be found, discussed or explained in her writings. “Your testimony is of a different character. It is to come down to the minutiae of life.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 608. So certainly something as important as whether or not we should keep the ceremonial law, or any part of it, would be pointed out. Following are a few of her statements on the ceremonial law:

“The ordinances which God Himself had appointed were made the means of blinding the mind and hardening the heart. God could do no more for man through these channels. The whole system must be swept away.” The Desire of Ages, 36.

“The great Teacher’s wisdom in limiting the measure of our researches in earthly directions, called the attention of all to his legislation from the very foundation of our world—to a code of morals, pure, simple, and practical, unencumbered by the long years of types and sacrifices, which passed away when the only true Sacrifice, Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, was offered for the sins of the world. . . . These lessons discharge his followers from the bondage of the ceremonial law.” The Review and Herald, June 21, 1898.

“In this ordinance, Christ discharged his disciples from the cares and burdens of the ancient Jewish obligations in rites and ceremonies. These no longer possessed any virtue.” Ibid., June 14, 1898.

“It was Christ’s desire to leave to his disciples an ordinance that would do for them the very thing they needed—that would serve to disentangle them from the rites and ceremonies which they had hitherto engaged in as essential, and which the reception of the gospel made no longer of any force. To continue these rites would be an insult to Jehovah.” Ibid.
