Recipe – Split Pea Dal

1 cup dried yellow or green split peas

5 cups water

1 clove garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon turmeric or saffron

Pinch of cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 tomato, finely chopped

1 teaspoon salt, or to taste

Rinse split peas. Bring water to boil in a large pot, and add peas. Return to boil, stir, then lower heat, and simmer 1 to 2 hours until tender. Add spices, salt, and tomato to peas, and cook 30 minutes. Serve with plain brown rice and vegetable curry.
