Introduction

“When one is fully emptied of self, when every false god is cast out of the soul, the vacuum is filled by the inflowing of the Spirit of Christ. Such a one has the faith that purifies the soul from defilement. He is conformed to the Spirit, and he minds the things of the Spirit. He has no confidence in self. Christ is all and in all. He receives with meekness the truth that is constantly being unfolded, and gives the Lord all the glory, saying, ‘God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit.’ ‘Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.’ [1 Corinthians 2:10, 12.]

“The Spirit that reveals, also works in him the fruits of righteousness. Christ is in him, ‘a well of water springing up into everlasting life.’ [John 4:14.] He is a branch of the True Vine, and bears rich clusters of fruit to the glory of God. What is the character of the fruit borne?—The fruit of the Spirit is ‘love,’ not hatred; ‘joy,’ not discontent and mourning; ‘peace,’ not irritation, anxiety, and manufactured trials.” Gospel Workers, 287.

Nothing but divine power can regenerate the human heart and imbue souls with the love of Christ, which will ever manifest itself with love for those for whom He died. note: “Not by its name, but by its fruit, is the value of a tree determined. If the fruit is worthless, the name cannot save the tree from destruction. John declared to the Jews that their standing before God was to be decided by their character and life. Profession was worthless. “We must present the principles of truth, and let them work upon the hearts of the people. We may pick the leaves from a tree as often as we please, but this will not cause the tree to die; the next season the leaves will come out again as thick as before. But strike the ax at the root of the tree, and not only will the leaves fall off of themselves, but the tree will die. Those who accept the truth, in the love of it, will die to the world, and will become meek and lowly in heart like their divine Lord. Just as soon as the heart is right, the dress, the conversation, the life, will be in harmony with the Word of God. We all need to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God. 11 How only can we bear good fruit? John 15:4, 5.

note: “O that all might realize that without Christ they can do nothing! Those who do not gather with Him scatter abroad. Their thoughts and actions will not bear the right character, and their influence will be destructive of good. Our actions have a twofold influence; for they affect others as well as ourselves. This influence will either be a blessing or a curse to those with whom we associate. How little we appreciate this fact. 12 What is the blessed result of truly abiding in Christ? John 15:7, 8.

note: “The Lord Jesus is dishonored by low ideas or designs on our part. He who does not feel the binding claims of God’s law, and neglects to keep every requirement, violates the whole law. He who is content to partially meet the standard of righteousness, and who does not triumph over every spiritual foe, will not meet the designs of Christ. He cheapens the whole plan of his religious life, and weakens his religious character, and under the force of temptation his defects of character gain the supremacy, and evil triumphs. We need to be persevering and determined, to meet the highest standard possible. Pre-established habits and ideas must be overcome in many cases, before we can make advancement in religious life. The faithful Christian will bear much fruit; he is a worker; he will not lazily drift, but will put on the whole armor to fight the battles of the Lord. Introduction

“The trials to which Christians are subjected in sorrow, adversity, and reproach are the means appointed of God to separate the chaff from the wheat. Our pride, selfishness, evil passions, and love of worldly pleasure must all be overcome; therefore God sends us afflictions to test and prove us, and show us that these evils exist in our characters. We must overcome through His strength and grace, that we may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. . . . Afflictions, crosses, temptations, adversity, and our varied trials are God’s workmen to refine us, sanctify us, and fit us for the heavenly garner.” Testimonies, vol. 3, 115.

note: “God sends trials to prove who will stand faithful under temptation. He brings us into trying positions to see if we will trust in a power out of and above ourselves. Everyone has undiscovered traits of character that must come to light through trial. God allows those who are self-sufficient to be sorely tempted that they may understand their helplessness. Introduction

“Why cannot those who claim to understand the Scriptures, see that God’s requirement under grace is just the same He made in Eden—perfect obedience to His law. In the Judgment, God will ask those who profess to be Christians, Why did you claim to believe in My Son, and continue to transgress My law? Who required this at your hands—to trample upon My rules of righteousness? . . . The gospel of the New Testament is not the Old Testament standard lowered to meet the sinner and save him in his sins. God requires of all His subjects obedience, entire obedience to all His commandments. He demands now as ever perfect righteousness as the only title to heaven. Christ is our hope and our refuge. His righteousness only is imputed to the obedient. Let us accept it through faith, that the Father shall find in us no sin. But those who have trampled on the holy law will have no right to claim that righteousness. Your imagination was not given you to be allowed to run riot and have its own way without any effort at restraint or discipline. If the thoughts are wrong the feelings will be wrong, and the thoughts and feelings combined make up the moral character. When you decide that as Christians you are not required to restrain your thoughts and feelings you are brought under the influence of evil angels and invite their presence and their control. If you yield to your impressions and allow your thoughts to run in a channel of suspicion, doubt, and repining you will be among the most unhappy of mortals, and your lives will prove a failure.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 310.

“How long a time are you designing to take to prepare to be introduced into the society of heavenly angels in glory? In the state which you and your family are in at present, all heaven would be marred should you be introduced therein. The work for you must be done here. This earth is the fitting-up place. You have not one moment to lose. All is harmony, peace, and love in heaven. No discord, no strife, no censuring, no unloving words, no clouded brows, no jars there; and no one will be introduced there who possesses any of these elements so destructive to peace and happiness. Nothing to Fear Except . . . , Part I

We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.” General Conference Daily Bulletin, January 29, 1893. Today, some people cannot remember what Ellen White was writing about—not because they have forgotten but because they never knew. It is our purpose in these editorials to review very briefly some of the evidence about the way God has led in the second advent movement which was predicted to take place in the last days. (See Revelation 10 and Revelation 14:6–12.)

In 1844, the Lord gave a vision to a young man by the name of Hazen Foss who believed that the Lord would come on October 22, 1844. In this vision, he was shown the journey of the advent people to the city of God with their dangers. Some messages of warning were also given to him to deliver. In addition, he was shown the trials and persecution that would follow, if he was faithful in relating what had been shown him.

He was shown three steps by which the people of God were to come fully upon the pathway to the holy city. Being a firm believer in the Lord’s return in just a few days, the part of the vision relating to the three steps onto the pathway was to him unexplainable, and he refused to relate it. The vision was given to him a second time, and he was told that, if he still refused to relate what he had been shown, the burden would be taken from him and be given to one of the weakest of the Lord’s children, one who would faithfully relate what God would reveal. He again refused. He was then told that he was released. A voice said, “You have grieved away the Spirit of the Lord.”

This frightened Foss. Deciding to relate what had been shown him, he called a meeting of Adventists, but when the people came and he tried to tell what had been shown to him, he could not call it to mind. It was too late. From that time he lost hope in Christ, never attended an Adventist meeting again, had no personal interest in religious things, and, in this condition of mind, died in 1893.

Early in 1845, Foss talked with Ellen Harmon and told her that although he had not gone into the chapel where she had spoken the evening before, he had stood outside the door and heard every word that she had said. He said that the vision she related was as near like that shown him as two persons could relate the same thing. He declared to her: “Do not refuse to obey God, for it will be at the peril of your soul, I am a lost man. You are chosen of God; be faithful in doing your work, and the crown I might have had you will receive.” Arthur L. White, Ellen G. The visions of Ellen Harmon White were supernatural phenomena and therefore were either from God or the devil. (She herself acknowledged this.) It is up to each individual believer to prove all things and hold fast to that which is good. (1 Thessalonians 5:21.)

The Bible predicted that our time, the last days, would be a time of great unbelief. (See Matthew 24:37–39; 11 Peter 3:3–7.) Millions do not believe in the Bible as the Word of God, and millions more do not believe that the visions of Ellen White were from God. In the future, we will examine some of the questions of the unbelievers. As for ourselves, we choose to be in the following group: “All who believe that the Lord has spoken through Sister White, and has given her a message, will be safe from the many delusions that will come in in these last days.” Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, 320.

“When the worshipers enter the place of meeting, they should do so with decorum, passing quietly to their seats. . . . “We can have the salvation of God in our families, but we must believe for it, live for it, and have a continual, abiding faith and trust in God. We must subdue a hasty temper and control our words, and in this we shall gain great victories. Unless we control our words and temper, we are slaves to Satan. We are in subjection to him. He leads us captive. All jangling and unpleasant, impatient, fretful words are an offering presented to his satanic majesty. Only the faultless will be there. None will be translated to heaven while their hearts are filled with the rubbish of earth. Every defect in the moral character must first be remedied, every stain removed by the cleansing blood of Christ, and all the unlovely, unlovable traits of character overcome.” Maranatha, 58.

note: “You have deceived yourself. If any man seemeth to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, that man’s religion is vain. Treat your family in a manner that Heaven can approve, and so that peace may be in your dwelling. There needs to be everything done for your family. Your children have had your bad example before them; you have blamed, and censured, and manifested a passionate spirit at home, while you would, at the same time, address the throne of grace, attend meeting, and bear testimony in favor of the truth. These exhibitions have led your children to despise you and the truth you profess. They have no confidence in your Christianity. 7 If able to control the tongue, what else are we able to do? James 3:2.
