Conquering Problems

There are many interesting things in the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy dealing with trouble. When the children of Israel were returning from Babylon and they were commissioned to rebuild the city of Jerusalem, the Bible says, “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.” Daniel 9:25.

Jerusalem was desolated with the wall broken down and the city in total ruin. The children of Israel were captives in foreign lands, but the prediction was that a time was coming when the streets and the wall were to be rebuilt, but it would be in times of trouble.

After a period of time in captivity, the children of Israel were given an opportunity to go back home. Out of over a million Israelites that were in Babylon and Medo-Persia at the time, just a handful returned, and because of the small number, they had trouble.

Another Babylonian captivity was predicted, not for 70 years, but for 1260 years. Daniel speaks of this, and in the prophecies of Revelation, John speaks of it six or seven times. Just as when, at the end of the 70-year captivity, the people needed to go back and rebuild the city, the street and the wall, at the end of the 1260-year captivity, the church that had been driven into the desert would also need to do some rebuilding.

Isaiah speaks about it. “Those from among you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach.” Isaiah 58:12.

To understand the meaning of the breach you need to understand the meaning of the wall. When God established His people, He put a wall around them for their protection. This wall, the Ten Commandments, hedged His children in to protect them from destroying themselves by sin.

A breach was made in that wall during the Babylonian captivity that lasted from A.D. 538 to A.D.1798. That breach was the fourth commandment. It was torn down so thoroughly that the people were unaware they were disobeying it. But the prophecy predicted that at the end of the captivity, there would come repairers of the breach to raise up the foundation of many generations and build the old waste places.

Isaiah said, “You shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, the Restorer of Streets to Dwell In. If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Isaiah 58:12–14.

Just as Nehemiah’s workers had to deal with trouble when they built the wall and the streets in their day, there has been trouble in the attempt to repair the breach in God’s law today.

The devil has created unbelievable antipathy or hatred against God’s law, particularly the Sabbath. Millions of Christians claim to love Jesus, but mention the Sabbath and you will most often get a vehement response that they want nothing to do with that Jewish Sabbath. The devil has created this hatred to hinder the work of rebuilding. It will be done, but in troublous times.

In the days of Christ people knew all about the justice of God and His law, but they rejected His Son. Today, people want only to hear about the mercy of God and not His justice, which includes His law containing the Sabbath. The wall is to be rebuilt, but it will be in trouble.

The Bible has a lot to say about how to deal with trouble.

Number 1 – You need protection and help that will not fail.

The Bible writers knew that we, as human beings, would need this help and protection, so they address it.

You might believe that the law of God is for our protection, and if all human beings kept it at all times, we would not be in the trouble that we are. This fact is true even in our own personal lives. Often the reason that we find ourselves in trouble is because at some point in the past we have broken one of the Ten Commandments. So, the wall is for our protection, but not everybody in the world keeps the law. What do we do when we are in trouble?

David addresses this: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1. This whole chapter is about the help that God has promised His people.

Isaiah says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.

God has promised help to people that are in trouble. One of my favorite texts in this regard is in Psalm 89:19: “Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one, and said: ‘I have given help to one who is mighty.’ ” It is so encouraging to know that God is bigger than we are. We cannot make bigger trouble than God is able to provide a solution. Nebuchadnezzar thought he could get the three Hebrew worthies into a situation where it would be too much for the Lord. He had the furnace heated up so much that the soldiers fell down dead at the front of it while throwing the men in. But Jesus was there in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo. (See Daniel 3.) There is no situation so severe that God can’t deal with it.

As a child, I often wondered why the Lord allowed the martyrs to be burned at the stake. Read this account of one man who died for his faith:

“Brother Andrews related an instance of a faithful Christian about to suffer martyrdom for his faith. A brother Christian had been conversing with him in regard to the power of the Christian hope—if it would be strong enough to sustain him while his flesh should be consuming with fire. He asked this Christian, about to suffer, to give him a signal if the Christian faith and hope were stronger than the raging, consuming fire. He expected his turn to come next, and this would fortify him for the fire. The former promised that the signal should be given. He was brought to the stake amid the taunts and jeers of the idle and curious crowd assembled to witness the burning of this Christian. The fagots were brought and the fire kindled, and the brother Christian fixed his eyes upon the suffering, dying martyr, feeling that much depended upon the signal. The fire burned, and burned. The flesh was blackened; but the signal came not. His eye was not taken for a moment from the painful sight. The arms were already crisped. There was no appearance of life. All thought that the fire had done its work, and that no life remained; when, lo! amid the flames, up went both arms toward heaven. The brother Christian, whose heart was becoming faint, caught sight of the joyful signal; it sent a thrill through his whole being, and renewed his faith, his hope, his courage. He wept tears of joy.

“As Brother Andrews spoke of the blackened, burned arms raised aloft amid the flames, he, too, wept like a child.” Testimonies, vol. 1, 657, 658.

God is a very present help in trouble; He is more powerful than the fire. The devil and his agents can never put you in a position where God cannot give you all the help you need. “But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.” Psalm 37:39, 40.

Psalm 33:20 says, “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” In Nahum 1:7 we read, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” Do you trust Him? God knows how to give you all the help you need, and He is waiting and watching over you, looking for an opportunity to bless you when you are in trouble.

Number 2 – When in trouble we need wise counsel.

People have found themselves in a lot more trouble than they ever should because they would not listen to counsel. This is one of God’s biggest problems. God said, concerning the children of Israel right after He gave the Ten Commandments, “Oh, if there was just a heart in them to listen to Me, then it could be well with them and their children forever.” Deuteronomy 5:29, literal translation.

God says of the wicked, “They would have none of My counsel and despised My every rebuke.” Proverbs 1:30. If you are not willing to take counsel from the Lord, you are getting ready to get into more trouble than you are in already. “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4.

Isaiah called Jesus the wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6). When in trouble, you need counsel from somebody who knows you or you could end up in more trouble. When a colleague of mine faced a problem, he would enquire from his superiors if they knew of any counsel from the Lord on the subject either in the Bible or Spirit of Prophecy.

When in trouble and you need counsel, seek it from somebody who knows and is able to give you wise counsel. There are many people in other churches that scoff at the writings of Ellen White, but I have so much confidence in the Spirit of Prophecy and have personally tested the writings over and over again when I’m in trouble. In it you will find wise counsel every time, and if you follow that counsel, the Lord will show you the way to lead you out of the trouble you are in.

Number 3 – You need direction.

When people get in trouble, they often get bewildered. I remember the story of a man who was a leader of young people. One Sabbath afternoon he led a group on a hike, but they became lost. Finally some people found them and led them back to the camp, and on returning they described seven fences that they had crossed. In fact, there was only one fence there, and the group had been circling. The leader needed direction and guidance.

Proverbs 3:5 and 6 states, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” This is a promise!

The Lord wants to direct you. If you are going to receive His direction and guidance, it would be a good thing to ask for it. Ellen White wrote great encouragement to a widow who had just lost her husband and was in deep trouble because she had children to raise: “There is not a single instance in which God has hidden His face from the supplication of His people. When every other resource failed He was a present help in every emergency.” This Day with God, 194.

Jesus said that if you ask, you will receive. If you seek, you will find. If you knock, the door will be opened (Matthew 7:7). God is waiting with myriads of angels that are at His command to help you and to give direction and guidance, even if you think you are in too much trouble and think your case is hopeless. The Bible tells us that David had that experience several times. If you are willing to accept counsel from the Lord, you will be surprised to find that the situation you thought was forever was just temporary because you accepted the counsel.

Number 4 – You need comfort just to get through the day.

I well recognize that even if you come to the Lord there may be some difficulty that is not going to leave you in one day but may take longer than a day, even a week or a month. Immediate help is available.

“At all times and in all places, in all sorrows and in all afflictions, when the outlook seems dark and the future perplexing, and we feel helpless and alone, the Comforter will be sent in answer to the prayer of faith. Circumstances may separate us from every earthly friend; but no circumstance, no distance, can separate us from the heavenly Comforter. Wherever we are, wherever we may go, He is always at our right hand to support, sustain, uphold, and cheer.” The Desire of Ages, 669, 670. That is good news!

In II Corinthians 1:4 Paul says, “God has comforted us. We were in so much trouble in Asia, we despaired of life itself, but God comforted us so we could comfort others that are in trouble.” Literal translation.

Jesus said to His disciples, “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:15–18. The comfort provided is through the Holy Spirit.

Number 5 – Do not yield to despondency and give way to mourning.

If you do, your trouble could very easily get a lot worse. I was disturbed for many years, trying to figure out what the Bible meant when Paul said, “Rejoice always.” I Thessalonians 5:16. I wondered had the apostle Paul read the book of Job? No matter what happens, you can refuse to give way to discouragement, despondency or mourning. To go around with a cloud over your head will depress your immune system and things will tend to worsen and look darker.

The person who talks faith will have faith. Recently, at a funeral of a very dear friend, we talked about the good things that we remembered about the person’s life and of the future. His disciples were bound down with despair when Jesus told them He was going to leave, and He told them, “Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house there are many permanent dwellings. If it wasn’t so, I would have told you. I’m going to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 4:1–3, literal translation.

The disciples did not know that within the next 24 hours Jesus would be led to the cross, but they couldn’t even bare the thought of Him being gone. Jesus did not dwell upon that thought; He directed their minds to the wonderful future. If you are a Christian, you have a wonderful future, and you must never let the devil get you into such a frame of mind to think only about your troubles. Keep your mind on the future and on what God is going to do for you. The Bible clearly illustrates that any trouble that you find yourself in is only temporary. David understood it. (See Psalm 42.) Paul talked about it over and over again. (See Philippians 4; Colossians 3:15–17.)

Number 6 – Have patience.

If you are in trouble, read Romans 2:7 which says, “Eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality.” If you will patiently continue in doing good and in doing what is right, God will lead you through this dark world of sorrow and strife to glory, honor, and eternal life. Do not make your situation worse by using your troubles to excuse wrong behavior.

Number 7 – You are not alone.

We need to remember when we are in trouble, that we are never alone. Guardian angels protect each child of God all the days of his or her life. Not only is your guardian angel with you in this life, but if you should die before Jesus comes, he marks and guards the place where you are buried. God never forgets His own. You are not alone and never will be alone, because you are God’s child. “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ ” Hebrews 13:5. Paul quotes there from Deuteronomy. So, we boldly say: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Psalm 118:6. It is a very comforting thought to know that you are never alone. God has promised to be with you.

An Experience

A man returned home after serving in World War II. He was physically uninjured, but like so many others who have come back from war, he could not free his mind of the death and carnage that he had witnessed in Europe. He became so discouraged that early one morning he decided to get his gun and take his own life, ending his misery. God knew what he was about to do, and suddenly a light appeared that distracted him. He never pulled the trigger. Later, this man became a Seventh-day Adventist minister. Recalling the story, he said he could never figure out what that light was, except that maybe an angel just decided to light up right then to distract him so he would not kill himself. God had a bigger plan for his life.

The Lord will never leave you alone. The apostle Paul told the Athenians, “We need to grope after Him, if perhaps we might find Him, though He is not far from every one of us. In Him we live, and move, and have our being.” Acts 17:27, 28, literal translation. He’s right there. He’s not somewhere else. You are not alone.

Number 8 – The school of life.

The Christian life is one of meaning, including all of the trials and troubles. Life in this world is actually a school of discipline and training, and all of the experiences, including the troubles, form a Christian character.

When trials come, ask yourself what it is that the Lord is trying to teach you through it. Sometimes I’ve been tempted to say to the Lord, “I wish I could learn the lesson I need to learn without going through this.” But the Lord knows; He is out to save you. I used to tell my students, when I taught at Southwestern Adventist College in Keene, Texas, “If the Lord knows that the only way He can save you is to allow you to go through a suffering experience, you might be surprised how much suffering He may allow you to go through, because He wants to save you.” We need to think about that when we are in trouble.

When Jesus got in trouble, He remained courteous. He still told the truth, even when He was going to be crucified because of it. This world is a school. I learned a long time ago, as a teacher, that students do not like tests. But a student cannot achieve and get to where he wants to be without tests. Tests are a necessary part of all education that is worth anything.

God is conducting a school, and He has an objective to reach. How can God expect somebody that is a wretch like me to become “like Christ”? I don’t know; I just say, “Lord, You’ve told me what You are going to do in my life and I’m trusting that You can do it.” But sometimes, God has to allow me to have some trouble, so I will learn the lessons He knows I need. If you pray about it, God might teach you a lot of lessons right in the midst of the troubles that you’re going through.

The Bible says that when Jesus comes, we are going to be like Him, so in order to achieve that we must develop His mind. Paul said that, “We have the mind of Christ.” I Corinthians 2:16. He said to the church in Philippi, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5.

This world is a school of discipline and training, and through all of our experiences, including our troubles, we are to form characters like the character of Christ, and to acquire the habits and the language of the higher life.

Different people have different lessons to learn. But we all are to acquire the habits and the language of the higher life. Enoch learned to do it. Ellen White says that while he was living on this earth he, by faith, dwelt in the abodes of light. He learned how to talk, think, and live the way heavenly beings lived, so God took him. “Enoch’s heart was upon eternal treasures. He had looked upon the celestial city. He had seen the King in His glory in the midst of Zion. His mind, his heart, his conversation, were in heaven. The greater the existing iniquity, the more earnest was his longing for the home of God. While still on earth, he dwelt, by faith, in the realms of light.” Heaven, 99.

Number 9 – Ask for help.

When you are in trouble, one of the things that you should be asking is, Lord, is there a way for me to overcome this problem? Some people wait for somebody else to solve everything. But the Lord is looking for people who will ask Him. In fact, Ellen White says that part of the work of true education is to teach the students to overcome obstacles. (See Manuscript Releases, vol. 8, 199, 200.)

I once knew a conference president who would not allow any pastor to say that he had a problem. He would say, “We do not have problems in this conference; we only have challenges. You are welcome to tell me whatever your challenge is, but we do not have problems here and I don’t want you to use that word, because we do not have them. Any problem we have here, we are going to overcome.”

The Bible talks about people who conquer or overcome. The Lord expects you to call on Him, and say, “Lord, help me. You promised me that I could overcome by Your grace, and I’m depending on You to help me.” Remember the glory that is awaiting the overcomer. The one who overcomes will be clothed in white raiment. Jesus says, in Revelation 3:5, “I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” The Father says, “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” Revelation 21:7.

Allow God to control your mind. Keep Christ always in view, and consider what the Lord would do in your place. Jesus did not just look at the trouble, He worked out a solution. The Devil presented a problem that he thought God Himself could not solve, but the Lord solved it. It required Jesus to go to the cross, but in that act, God was able to solve the sin problem. Because of it, He is able to solve whatever trouble you experience.

Number 10 – God’s promises are for all who receive Him.

“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12.

Disobedience must and will be punished. In Christ your weakest point can become your strongest if only you go to the Lord and ask for help.

Jesus said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Mark 9:23. “He that believes on Him has eternal life, but he that is disobedient to the Son does not have life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.” John 3:36, literal translation. If you believe, victory is certain, and all of your troubles will be temporary.

The 2520 Chart

There is a wind of doctrine blowing within all groups of Adventism today that is deceiving many. Paul warned the elders of the Ephesian church that there would arise among them people speaking perverse things and that they would draw disciples after themselves. (See Acts 20:28–30.) One sign of apostasy is people arise with some teaching and want people to follow them. Paul set us an example and was not ashamed to declare the whole counsel of God to meet these heresies. We also should not be afraid to stand up for what we know is right.

Fanaticism today is rampant among us and is destroying the reformation movement. Ellen White said that fanatics almost destroyed the sixteenth century reformation. (See The Great Controversy, 204, 205.) Martin Luther was more afraid of some of his friends from within, the fanatics, than those without. It makes no difference to the devil which side of the ditch you fall into, the ice of indifference or the fire of fanaticism—both end up lost. Our only safety is to be alert and diligent in the study of our Bibles so we can know and understand what is truth and be able to discern error. There are many eloquent preachers that seem very convincing, but every teaching or miracle and every spirit must be tested against the word of God.

Revelation 10 describes the rise of a church which would be organized to finish the work of the Reformation that started in the sixteenth century and take the true gospel to the world. We need to clearly understand that this prophecy which describes a movement would take the message of Revelation 14:6–12 to all the world. Any message which does not align with these messages needs to be discarded.

“In the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as He hath declared to His servants the prophets. And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go, and take the little book [the book of Daniel] which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up.” The Advent movement began to study this book that had been shrouded in mystery for centuries. “Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. … And as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.” Verses 7–10, last part.

These verses describe the rise of the Advent movement as they looked forward to Jesus’ coming on October 22, 1844. It was sweet as honey to know that Jesus was going to come soon, that families would be reunited once again and that sin and suffering was going to be over. I hope that sweetness of Jesus’ Second Coming is still in your mouth! But at the passing of the time in 1844, when Jesus did not come, it was a bitter experience that hit God’s people hard. Verse 11 shows the work that must still be done: “And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.” There is our work—clearly a movement to “prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.”

God’s last day church is a movement and God called a man by the name of William Miller to especially awaken the people here in the United States. To clarify a point, William Miller did not have everything figured out, but that did not make him ungodly, and it does not mean that he was not led by the Holy Spirit to come up with the belief that he had. William Miller is going to be in heaven. Ellen White says that God laid him to rest so He could save him. He is going to be in heaven, but he did not have everything figured out just as Martin Luther also did not have everything figured out. Truth is progressive. The light of the gospel continues to move. Some things they thought were true are not true. William Miller was called from his plow to give a warning message of the coming judgment to awaken people, and this he did.

I tell you this because I do not want to be accused of attacking William Miller. I believe what Ellen White said about William Miller: “But from the first his labors were blessed in a remarkable manner to the salvation of souls.” The Great Controversy, 331. We will never know how many souls William Miller won to the Lord. There were thousands of people who came to hear him, many more than we see at religious meetings today. “His first lecture was followed by a religious awakening in which thirteen entire families, with the exception of two persons, were converted. He was immediately urged to speak in other places, and in nearly every place his labor resulted in a revival of the work of God. Sinners were converted, Christians were roused to greater consecration, and deists and infidels were led to acknowledge the truth of the Bible and the Christian religion.” Ibid.

William Miller had a good study plan. He started in Genesis 1:1 and then read through the Bible. Any text he came to that he did not understand, he would stop and ponder that text, studying it out text upon text, line upon line, until he understood its meaning before moving on.

“When, therefore, he found, in his study of the Bible, various chronological periods that, according to his understanding of them, extended to the second coming of Christ, he could not but regard them as the ‘times before appointed’ (Acts 17:26), which God had revealed unto His servants.” Ibid., 324. Notice Ellen White did not say that this is absolutely Biblical, but she said that this was his understanding of these chronological periods. William Miller, as he went through Genesis, saw chronological periods. He saw the flood, pharaoh, the baker, the butler and their dreams. He saw Joseph’s dreams; he saw a beginning and an end. Then He came to Leviticus.

In Leviticus 26:18–21 it says, “And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: and your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. And if ye walk contrary unto Me, and will not hearken unto Me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.” As William Miller read these texts in Scripture, he understood that the seven times was a time prophecy that calculated down to 2520.

As he read these chronological periods, according to his understanding, they would terminate in 1843. He thought things were going to end and Jesus was going to come in 1843, but his calculation proved wrong. Ellen White mentions Habakkuk 2 in reference to Miller and his associates, especially Hiram Edson, as they were studying and this is the conclusion that they came to. Habakkuk 2:2, 3. says, “And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” So, the thought came into Hiram Edson’s mind to make up a chart for everybody to see the time prophesies, resulting in the 1843 chart developed by Charles Fitch. (See Ibid., 392.)

Until recently I have never thought much about the 2520, because I have never read anything about it in the Spirit of Prophecy. But now it has become a teaching and those not believing it are being accused of being in apostasy. “Numerous charts, antedating the famous 1843 chart, appeared in varying forms in different periodicals and books of the movement. These pictorial charts and diagrams not only afforded the best exhibitions offered of the main Millerite expositions of prophecies, but the progressive movements of the interpretations is clearly reflected in these designs.” Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, Review and Herald Publishing Association, Washington, D.C., 1954, vol. 4, 720. As the early seekers continued to study, improvements or changes were made to these charts and by comparison, the frank correction of earlier inaccuracies can be seen at the glance. The earlier individual charts were largely an extension of Miller’s views. Remember, this is not an attack on William Miller, but simply a look at truth. When Charles Fitch developed this chart the following are some of the things that were corrected from the errors in William Miller’s earlier charts:

  • He believed the three horns in Daniel 7:8, 20, 24 were Lombardi, Rome and Revina. We understand them now to be the Herulli, Vandals, and Ostrogoths which finally fell in 538.
  • He believed that the little horn in Daniel 8 was both Antiochus Epiphanies and Mohammedism. That was corrected to the understanding that the little horn was both pagan and papal Rome.
  • He believed that the crucifixion of Christ occurred in A.D. 33. Today, we believe by studying Daniel 9 in comparison with Ezra 6 and 7 that the starting date is A.D. 457 and ending at Christ’s crucifixion. A careful study of Daniel 9 proves that Jesus died in A.D. 31.
  • He believed that the 666 years in Revelation 13:18, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” was the time period of the pagan Roman rule. Today we have a totally different understanding.

The proponents of the early 2520 charts almost idolize them and have made them the standard of understanding prophecy today.

Studying the Spirit of Prophecy should be in the same manner that you study the Bible, by comparing passage with passage.

Ellen White said: “The Lord showed me that the 1843 chart was directed by His hand, and that no part of it should be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them. That His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until His hand was removed.” The Review and Herald, November 1, 1850.

Now notice the difference between this last quotation with another passage that is almost identical, but there is something added that I believe is very important.

“I saw that the old chart [the 1843 chart] was directed by the Lord, and that not a figure of it should be altered except by inspiration.” [Emphasis added.] Spaulding and Magan Collection, 1. Notice that the only thing that could change these charts was Inspiration, which, at that time period, was the Bible and the inspired writings of Ellen White. This means that if you see any change on that chart, Divine authority through either the Spirit of Prophecy or the Bible had better back it up. As we have seen, Ellen White said: “I saw that the figures of the chart were as God would have them, and that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none should see it till His hand was removed.” Ibid. That is a very interesting statement!

Remember, light is progressive and truth continues to move. In 1850 the chart was changed. The 2520 chart was still there, but it was less obscure; it no longer seemed to be the prominent teaching. This is very fascinating because the leaders of the pioneer movement had begun to restudy and rethink everything they had thus far understood.

It seems that many people are continually looking for something new, but we need to go back and restudy the fundamental beliefs, because we do not even have them figured out. Restudy them and know them for yourself.

James White began reviewing the doctrine of the 2520. In Leviticus 26:3–13, you will notice the blessings that come with walking in the commandments of God, and then verses 15–33 describe the curses for disobeying His commandments. Verses 14–16 say, “But if ye will not hearken unto Me, and will not do all these commandments; and if ye shall despise My statutes, or if your soul abhor My judgments, so that ye will do all My commandments, but that ye break My covenant: I also will do this unto you.” He then begins enumerating these things. “And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. … And if ye walk contrary unto Me, and will not hearken unto Me; I will bring seven times more plagues.” Verses 18, 21. These verses do not sound like a time prophecy.

The Hebrew word for seven is sheba, which means complete. God said, “I’m going to completely punish you.” He was not talking about a time prophecy as William Miller thought. As we continue to study we see that what he believed about the “seven times” was not truth.

Again, in verse 24, He tells us: “Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times more for your sins.” It says the same thing in verse 28. The Bible is consistent with itself in all its manifestation.

“All truth, whether in prophecy or in revelation, is consistent with itself in all its manifestations.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 114. The Bible is always consistent, so if we were to remain consistent with Scripture, if seven times is a time prophecy in these texts, then when you read seven times in another passage, does it always refer to a time prophecy? Think it through; if in the book of Numbers or in the book of Jeremiah you read seven times, you will look at that as a time prophecy. You will become very confused, because there are four time prophecies within this one chapter.

Notice what James White said as he began examining these texts in the Scriptures: “So then, there is no prophetic period in Leviticus 26; and those who imagine that such a thing exists, and are puzzling themselves over the adjustment of its several dates, are simply beating the air. To ignore, or to treat with neglect, a prophetic period where one is plainly given, is censurable in the extreme. It is an equally futile, though not so heinous, a course, to endeavor to create one where none exists.” The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, January 26, 1864. His statement is very plain and his wife [Ellen White] never once rebuked him for saying this.

The “seven times” mentioned means the severity and intensity of the punishments God would bring upon Israel. Now what is interesting is that the 1843 chart prominently displayed the 2520; in the 1850 chart it was not so prominent, and by the time the 1863 chart was made, you will not find one mention of it. Remember, Ellen White said that the charts were not to be changed “except by inspiration.” They were not going contrary to the Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible to use a chart that was totally contrary to prior teachings. This tells us that Inspiration had changed the charts, because they were not correct to begin with.

In 1870, it was the 1863 chart that was being used for evangelism. Endorsing this chart, Ellen White wrote: “You can hang up the charts, and show them the truth, as it is there illustrated. You can teach them, if you have a mind thus to do, by explaining prophetic history, and tracing down prophecies, that the end of all things is at hand. You can impress them with the sacredness of the law of God, and show them its claims upon them.” The Review and Herald, March 29, 1870.

Quoting from the introduction of The Golden Thread of Prophecy, which is a book about the study of the 2520, the publishers say: “Few in our time have heard of this prophecy, it has dropped from our understanding, but it was a very integral part of the Prophecy Chart of 1843, in fact, when you understand the 2520, all the lines of time prophecy—all of it—can be found within it. Neither we, nor the pioneers, have seen in the Bible anything longer than the 2520, so we can safely say this is the longest time prophecy in Scripture.”

I hope by now your mind is reeling, because the prophet told us: “Miller and his associates proclaimed that the longest and last prophetic period brought to view in the Bible was about to expire.” The Great Controversy, 351. The longest time prophecy referred to was the 2300 days. This should be end of argument!

“The message given by Miller and his associates announced the termination of the 2300 days of Daniel 8:14.” Ibid.

“After this period of time, reaching from 1842 to 1844, there can be no definite tracing of the prophetic time. The longest reckoning reaches to the autumn of 1844.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 971. The 2520 prophecy reaches only to 1843. It is very plain that this cannot be a teaching we can adhere to.

It is also interesting to note that as you look at these charts closely, William Miller and Hiram Edson differed in their understanding on the 2520. Proponents of the 2520 today claim that they were both right.

To indicate a prophecy in Leviticus 26 there would have to be something in these passages giving a starting date, but there is none. You can’t just say, “If they don’t hearken unto Me” with no timing. When did that happen? When did they stop keeping the commandments of God and when did these judgments start coming upon them? There would have to be clear-cut evidence from this chapter, or someplace else, to tell us that this “seven times” is a time prophecy, but there is none.

None, who have not studied their Bibles like ever before, will be able to stand in the great time of trouble. They will be blown about and misled by all kinds of false teachers. Ellen White says, “If men are so easily misled now, how will they stand when Satan shall personate Christ, and work miracles?” Last Day Events, 162.

If we can be blown from one doctrine to the next so easily, we will not make it to the end. If we knew the word of God as we should, we would not be blown about by every wind of doctrine that comes around and get swayed so easily by preaching that which appears so convincing. We are called to be like the Bereans, who “received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11.

It would have been a real temptation to listen to Paul and not just believe what he said as gospel. He was a scholar and a godly man. He knew multiple languages, and he knew the Bible inside and out, but still the Bereans searched the Scriptures for themselves, and they were commended for it.

We must study as never before and know without a doubt what we believe. Fanaticism is sweeping through our ranks, scattering us and splintering us because we do not take the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy as it reads, and we are blown about by every wind of doctrine.

Waste no more time; reconsecrate yourself now to the study of God’s word daily to fortify your mind so that you will be able to stand in the last great conflict with the powers of darkness.

Old and New Testament Eras of Prophecy

In the history of the great controversy, from the fall of Adam to the close of probation, there have been three eras of prophetic manifestations.

  1. First Era: The Old Testament Era. The manifestation of the spirit of prophecy during Old Testament times began when Moses wrote the first books of the Bible around 1500 B.C. The book of Malachi was written about 400 B.C. The most important purpose of the Old Testament prophecies was to prepare a people to receive Jesus as the Lamb of God, who was to shed His blood to ratify the covenant made with the Father before the foundation of the earth (Revelation 13:8) to redeem the fallen race.
  2. Second Era: The New Testament Era. This era of biblical prophecy began about A.D. 50 when the first books of the New Testament were written by Paul. The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, was completed in about A.D. 95. The purpose of this era of prophecy was to introduce a people to the heavenly sanctuary and Jesus’ ministry from A.D. 31 to the close of probation. This era revealed the apostasy that would take place in the Christian church, the opening of the investigative judgment and the closing scenes of the great controversy.
  3. Third Era: The Second Advent Movement. These prophecies came from about A.D. 1845 to about A.D. 1915. One purpose of this prophecy was to prepare the world for the close of the investigative phase of the judgment, the close of probation. Another purpose of this era of prophecy was to prepare a people for the restoration of the kingdom of glory. These are the purposes of the Spirit of Prophecy during the Second Advent Movement.

Each era of prophecy has equal inspiration; all are equal in their level of importance. We will see how each of these eras fulfilled its purpose. Each succeeding era adds more light to our understanding of the new covenant—the great plan of redemption. In the third era of prophecy our understanding of the new covenant and the ministry of Jesus in the sanctuary of the new covenant reaches the full light of day.

  1. Old Testament Era of Prophecy

This era of prophecy pointed forward to the death of Jesus on the cross, the crowning trial and final test of the disciples, the ratification and establishment of the new covenant and the opening of the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven in A.D. 31, three days after Jesus was crucified. We will gain an understanding of what happened to the disciples and how they learned this truth, because they certainly did not know it when Jesus died on the cross.

“To man the first intimation of redemption was communicated in the sentence pronounced upon Satan in the garden.”

“Adam and his companion were assured that notwithstanding their great sin, they were not to be abandoned to the control of Satan. The Son of God had offered to atone, with His own life, for their transgression.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 65, 66.

“Heavenly angels more fully opened to our first parents the plan that had been devised for their salvation.” Ibid. It was revealed to them that “the law of Jehovah is the foundation of His government in heaven as well as upon the earth. … Not one of its precepts could be abrogated or changed to meet man in his fallen condition; but the Son of God, Who had created man, could make an atonement for him. As Adam’s transgression had brought wretchedness and death, so the sacrifice of Christ would bring life and immortality.” Ibid., 66, 67.

From the beginning of the Old Testament, God assured them that Jesus would come to pay the penalty for their sins. To help them keep focused on this covenant, the system of sacrifices was given to Adam. The sacrificial system did not start with the sanctuary on earth—it began outside the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were instructed that the sacrifice represented Jesus Christ who was going to come to this earth and ratify the covenant for them.

“The sacrificial offerings were ordained by God to be to man a perpetual reminder and a penitential acknowledgment of his sin and a confession of his faith in the promised Redeemer. … To Adam, the offering of the first sacrifice was a most painful ceremony. His hand must be raised to take life, which only God could give. It was the first time he had ever witnessed death, and he knew that had he been obedient to God, there would have been no death of man or beast. As he slew the innocent victim, he trembled at the thought that his sin must shed the blood of the spotless Lamb of God.” Ibid., 68.

Right at the beginning of the Old Testament, we see the sacrificial system pointing to the cross. That was a daily witness to them through all of the Old Testament.

The sacrifice of Christ, to establish and ratify the new covenant, became the focal point of God’s people from Adam to the death of Jesus on the cross. The book of Genesis gives us a record of the faithfulness of the patriarchs to the sacrificial system. We see it after the flood with Noah. With Abraham the covenant was renewed in a special way. Isaac and Jacob continued the sacrificial system.

At the time of the Exodus, the sacrificial offerings were expanded into a sanctuary with daily and yearly services and other special days of worship. The books of Exodus and Leviticus are almost wholly devoted to the instruction of these services.

Again we find in Isaiah 53 a clear picture of the purpose of Christ’s first advent, the covenant and Christ’s sacrifice.

“But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. …

“He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so He did not open His mouth” (Isaiah 53:5, 6).

This is a clear picture of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus.

“After the suffering of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied; by His knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give Him a portion among the great … because He poured out His life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:5–7, 11, 12.

The 70-week prophecy foretold Christ’s death. The book of Daniel gives a clear picture of Christ’s trial and crucifixion.

“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. … He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.” Daniel 9:24, 27. (Emphasis added.)

Here we find in these prophecies of the Old Testament that Jesus was going to come as the Lamb of God to give His life to ratify the covenant.

With all of this prophetic information, why didn’t God’s people recognize Jesus when He came? History tells us that the church stepped off the true foundation and the leaders established another set of fundamental beliefs that were not in harmony with the Scriptures. Instead of looking for the Lamb of God to ratify the covenant and deliver them from their sins, they replaced Him with a Messiah that they hoped would deliver them from the control of the Romans. This change of emphasis replaced the true foundation with a false one and led the whole church astray. Thus they did not recognize the Lamb of God when He came to ratify the new covenant.

Even the disciples did not know what was happening. During His ministry, Jesus tried to help them understand that He had come to be a sacrifice, the Lamb of God, that would pay the penalty for their sins, but the false foundation prevented them from getting the message straight. This misapplication of Scripture brought the disciples to their crowning trial and final test.

“Compassionate Redeemer, who in the full knowledge of the doom that awaited Him, tenderly smoothed the way for the disciples, prepared them for their crowning trial, and strengthened them for the final test!” The Desire of Ages, 394.

When Jesus went through His trying experience in Gethsemane, His trial and death upon the cross, the disciples were scattered, confused and discouraged. Peter even denied Him. Why? Because they did not understand what was taking place. They had misinterpreted the Old Testament Scriptures that had clearly revealed the plan of redemption. Jesus understood their situation, but He continued to go about His work to fulfill the terms of the new covenant and open the holy place of the sanctuary in heaven.

By His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus ratified and established the new covenant. The third day after His crucifixion He ascended to heaven to open the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven. The disciples, grieving and confused, did not know what was happening. When the body of Jesus was gone from the tomb, they still did not understand. When Jesus spoke to Mary after His resurrection, and she recognized Him, she moved forward as if to embrace His feet to worship Him. Notice what happened:

“Christ raised His hand, saying, Detain Me not; ‘for I am not yet ascended to My Father: but go to My brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God.’ …

“Jesus refused to receive the homage of His people until He had the assurance that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. He ascended to the heavenly courts, and from God Himself heard the assurance that His atonement for the sins of men had been ample, that through His blood all might gain eternal life. The Father ratified the covenant made with Christ, that He would receive repentant and obedient men.” (Emphasis added.) Ibid., 790.

Immediately, Jesus came back to this earth to give the news to the disciples, who should have known what was happening, and to reveal to them the true foundation of their faith. When He talked with two of the disciples on the way to Emmaus, the first thing He did was to rebuke them for not knowing the truth.

“He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” Luke 24:25–27.

The Old Testament contained all the information they needed to know about the cross and about Christ’s ratification of the new covenant, but because they listened to the leaders who had stepped off the true foundation, they did not know what was going on. That was the cause of their crowning trial and final test.

When Jesus finished explaining the Scriptures to them, they understood the plan of salvation and why Christ had come. Their whole experience was turned upside down. Instead of being sad, they now had a message of hope to give to the world. When they understood that the covenant was ratified, they went to the world with the message of Christ’s ministry as their high priest in the daily service in the heavenly sanctuary. It was so powerful that a few years later a Gentile commented that this message was “turning the world upside down.”

When this message of the new covenant is correctly understood it will turn the world upside down.

  1. New Testament Era of Prophecy

This era of prophecy began with the ascension of Jesus in A.D. 31. It was to point the people to the holy place and later to the most holy place of the sanctuary in heaven where Christ was ministering in their behalf.

Forty days after His resurrection, when Jesus ascended the second time, God wanted the world to know that Jesus had paid the price on Calvary. Acts 1:9–11 gives us a clear picture of this ascension. The disciples, with many others, were there watching.

The New Testament also tells us about His arrival to the holy place of the sanctuary in heaven. Revelation chapters 4 and 5 give us a picture of the celebration prepared to receive Jesus when He entered the heavenly courts upon His arrival from this earth. In vision, John was watching this celebration. All of a sudden, he “saw a Lamb as if it had been slain standing in the center of the throne.” Revelation 5:6. Ellen White describes the same scene. She portrays how the angels sang and escorted Him into the sanctuary. All the hosts of heaven are there to welcome the Redeemer. They are eager to glorify their beloved Commander.

“But He waves them back. Not yet; He cannot now receive the coronet of glory and the royal robe. … He approaches the Father, with whom there is joy over one sinner that repents; who rejoices over one with singing. Before the foundations of the earth were laid, the Father and the Son had united in a covenant to redeem man if he should be overcome by Satan. They had clasped Their hands in a solemn pledge that Christ should become the surety for the human race. This pledge Christ has fulfilled. … The compact had been fully carried out.” The Desire of Ages, 834.

From His ascension in A.D. 31 to October 22, 1844, Jesus served in the holy place of the sanctuary in heaven.

If this message was turning the world upside down, why didn’t the people in the second advent movement know where the sanctuary was? An apostasy had taken place in the church. During the Dark Ages, the knowledge of the ministry of Christ in the daily service of the heavenly sanctuary was wiped out. The leaders in the church again changed the foundation of faith and established a false gospel in its place. Jesus and the New Testament writers warned the people about the “man of sin” who would oppose the daily ministry of Jesus in heaven.

The disciples asked Jesus what would be the sign of His coming. Jesus answered, “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” Matthew 24:4, 5.

John the revelator tells us, “Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” I John 2:18.

The New Testament writers called the time they lived in the last hour, or the time of the end. Peter refers to the apostasy that would come before the time of the end when he says, “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.” II Peter 2:1.

Paul also had much to say about this. He says, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel.” Galatians 1:6, 7.

Stepping off the foundation of the sanctuary and the covenant, they were introducing a different gospel. Paul continues in verse 7, “which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.”

The gospel we know is the new covenant—the plan Jesus and the Father made to restore us to the kingdom of glory. Paul says these people are deserting that very gospel. This apostasy was putting aside the sanctuary message of Christ’s ministry in the holy place. This apostasy spread and deepened and the New Testament continues to warn us.

The messages to the seven churches in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 explain this apostasy from the loss of the first love in the Ephesus church to the Thyatira church. God wanted the people to know that they should not drift from the foundation of truth—the sanctuary message—but they did not heed the warning.

Revelation 6:1–8 about the four horses is a graphic description of the apostasy and Satan’s attack against that early Christian church, and they could not withstand his attack. They should have been able to resist it because God promised the disciples, “The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations” (II Peter 2:9). The sanctuary message was lost so that in the 1840s nobody even knew where the sanctuary was.

When it reached the depths of apostasy in A.D. 538, Satan was in control of the church (Revelation 13:2), and he introduced the pope as head of the church. The Christians should have kept in mind that Jesus Christ, ministering in the holy place of the sanctuary in heaven, was the head of the church. However, they gave in to Satan’s deception and looked to the pope instead.

“Faith was transferred from Christ, the true foundation, to the pope of Rome. Instead of trusting in the Son of God for forgiveness of sins and for eternal salvation, the people looked to the pope, and to the priests and prelates to whom he delegated authority. They were taught that the pope was their earthly mediator and that none could approach God except through him; and, further, that he stood in the place of God to them and was therefore to be implicitly obeyed.” The Great Controversy, 55.

By the time of the second advent movement in the 1840s, the church had lost all knowledge of the sanctuary in heaven and began to teach that the earth was the sanctuary. Daniel 8:9–15 says that the little horn would be successful, would throw truth to the ground and would prosper in everything it did. He succeeded in wiping out the knowledge of the ministry of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary.

This brought on the great disappointment in 1844. These people should have known the truth; it was all available to them, but they allowed the church to distract them and take them on a different path.

“Like the first disciples, William Miller and his associates did not, themselves, fully comprehend the import of the message which they bore. Errors that had been long established in the church prevented them from arriving at a correct interpretation of an important point in the prophecy. Therefore, though they proclaimed the message which God had committed to them to be given to the world, yet through a misapprehension of its meaning they suffered disappointment.” Ibid., 351, 352.

In 1844 when the first angel’s message came to give the gospel of the sanctuary message and to proclaim the judgment hour message to begin, which would take place in the most holy place, the whole Protestant world rejected it. What a warning that is to us!

The New Testament prophecy, with the help of a few references from the Old Testament, was to prepare the world for the opening of the judgment in the most holy place on October 22, 1844. In these references, we find the information that restores the knowledge of the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven.

Daniel 8:14 set the date for the most holy place to open. They should have known what was to take place at the end of the 2300 years.

Revelation 14:6 announced the proclamation of the eternal gospel—the message of the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven. They did not know the meaning of the true gospel.

Revelation 14:7 announced the judgment to begin and the transition of Jesus from the holy place to the most holy place. They did not have a clue about the heavenly sanctuary, but they should have known. It was revealed in the New Testament.

They could have gone back to Daniel 7:9 and 10, which pointed forward to this judgment. It says, “The court was seated and the books were opened.” The Ancient of Days is the Father—the Judge. Christ enters as the Mediator. All of the heavenly angels are witnesses. It could not have been any clearer, but they had been led off the platform of eternal truth.

The announcement to the Philadelphia church (Revelation 3:7, 8) very clearly pointed out that Christ was moving from the holy place to the most holy place. He closed the door to the holy place and opened the door to the most holy place. The people did not know what that meant because they had been deceived.

Not only that, Paul wrote the whole book of Hebrews to explain that Christ had gone to the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven to be their high priest—their mediator. Even though the information was there, the people could not understand what was going on.

The parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1–12) tells specifically about God’s invitation to the wedding banquet. To prepare for this event, they were to put on a wedding garment—a robe of righteousness, the character of Christ—and they were to understand that it was through His ministry in the most holy place that they were to obtain that robe of character. But they had lost sight of Christ and His ministry in the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary.

The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1–12 is a description of the attitudes of the people toward the gospel—the new covenant. Some were wise and accepted the warning. The rest were foolish and allowed the leaders of the church to direct them to false fundamental beliefs. Had they studied and known the Scriptures as it was their privilege to do, they would not have been disappointed on October 22, 1844, when they expected Christ to come to this earth. It was their privilege to know the truth just like it was the privilege of the disciples to know about the sacrifice of Christ in the first advent. Because the leaders of the church had led them off the foundation, they were disappointed.

So we see that the New Testament era of prophecy was not received any better than was the Old Testament era of prophecy. Fortunately, in both of these situations they had an opportunity to get back on the platform of eternal truth after their test.

In the third era, we are going to notice something that is frightening.

The 1290 and 1335 Day Prophecies

Editors Note: In recent years there has been a renewed interest in the 1290 and 1335 day prophecies in Daniel 12. This interest is often associated with the setting of time periods when certain end-time events are supposed to occur. Over the last several years, many people have sent books and manuscripts to Steps to Life, which on the basis of the 1290 and 1335 day periods plus a calculation of jubilee periods, have made some very startling predictions. Many of these writers are well-known throughout Adventism. Some have forthrightly stated that Ellen White was wrong, and others claim to believe Ellen White, but still set time, which she always rebuked, and stated that we would never have another message for God’s people based on time. The third angels’ message is the last message of mercy to be given to the world (The third angel’s message includes the first two and the repetition of the second in Revelation 18:1–5) and we have been warned that it is not to be hung on time. Nevertheless, a misunderstanding of the “daily” has been used over and over again in recent years to try to set time from Daniel 12. (See the article “The Cities to be Worked” in Land Marks, July 1995.) Although it would seem nigh unto blasphemy to call the ministration of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary “the daily in rebellion” as the daily is described in Daniel 8:12 (literal translation), this new view of the daily has persisted and is part of the popular timesetting interpretations. (A.T. Jones was at least consistent enough to indicate that Ellen White was wrong in her understanding of the daily when he espoused the new view of it.)

Although we have nothing personally against this host of Adventist time-setters, we must solemnly protest the teaching which has led multitudes of Adventists into time-excitement instead of organizing bands of workers to finish the proclamation of the three angels’ messages.

We have numerous manuscripts and books from well-known Adventist expositors which, partly on the basis of the 1290 and 1335 day prophecies, proclaim that the judgement of the living would begin in 1991 and the culmination of the jubilee would be in the fall of 1994, but we are now past the jewish day of Atonement of 1995. Surely a child could now figure out that these are false interpretations of prophecy and should not be given the slightest credence. Notice the following statements:

“I have been repeatedly urged to accept the different periods of time proclaimed for the Lord to come, but I have ever had one testimony to bear: the Lord will not come at that period, and you are weakening the faith even of Adventists, and fastening the world in their unbelief . . . their oft-repeated message of definite time was exactly what the enemy wanted, and it served his purpose well to unsettle the faith in the first proclamation of time, that was of heavenly origin. The world placed all time proclamation on the same level and called it a delusion, fanaticism, and heresy. Ever since 1844 I have borne my testimony that we were now in a period of time in which we are to take heed to ourselves lest our hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon us unawares. Our position has been one of waiting and watching, with no time proclamation to intervene between the close of the prophetic periods in 1844 and the time of the Lord’s coming.” Manuscript Release, vol. 16, 178.

“I want you to see that it is not in the providence of God that any finite man shall, by any device or reckoning that he may make of figures, or of symbols, or of types, know with any definiteness in regard to the very period of the Lord’s coming.” Manuscript Release, vol. 10, 272. See also Selected Messages, vol. 1, chapter 23.

Another important prophetic period upon which the Advent doctrine is based, is the 1335 days of Daniel 12, with which the 1290 days are so intimately connected. These two periods are introduced to us as follows:

“And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. But go thou thy way till the end be; for thou shalt rest and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.” Daniel 12:11–13.

The questions at once arise. Can we tell what the events are, from which these periods are to be dated; and if so, can we tell when they took place? We first inquire. What is the “daily” (sacrifice) and the “abomination that maketh desolate?” It will be noticed that the word, sacrifice, is in italics: denoting that it is a supplied word. The same will be noticed in the other instances of its occurrence in the book of Daniel 11:31 and 8:11-13. Let us briefly refer to this latter chapter. In verse 13 it will be observed that two desolations are brought to view; the daily (desolation,) and the transgression of desolation. This fact is made so plain by J. Litch that we cannot do better than quote his language.

The Daily

“The daily sacrifice is the present reading of the text; but no such thing as sacrifice is found in the original. This is acknowledged on all hands. It is a gloss or construction put upon it by the translators. The true reading is, ‘the daily and the transgression of desolation;’ daily and transgression being connected together by ‘and;’ the daily desolation and the transgression of desolation. They are two desolating powers which were to desolate the Sanctuary and the host.”

From this it is evident that the “daily,” can have no reference to the Jewish worship to which it has been applied by the older and more prevalent opinion; and this is further evident from the consideration that if these periods, taken either literally or figuratively, be dated from any taking away of this worship, they do not bring us to any event whatever worthy of note.

The daily and the abomination then, are two desolating powers which were to oppress the church. Can we ascertain what these powers are? We have only to adopt William Miller’s method of reasoning on this point to arrive at the same conclusion with him. He says “I read on, and could find no other case in which it [the daily] was found but in Daniel. I then [by the aid of a concordance] took those words which stood in connection with it, ‘take away;’ he shall take away the daily; ‘from the time that the daily shall be taken away’ I read on and thought I should find no light on the text. Finally I came to 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8, ‘For the mystery of iniquity doth already work; only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way, and then shall the wicked be revealed.’ And when I had come to that text, O how clear and glorious the truth appeared. There it is! That is the daily! Well, now, what does Paul mean by ‘he who now letteth’ or hindereth? By ‘the Man of Sin,’ and the ‘wicked,’ Popery is meant. Well what is it which hinders Popery from being revealed? Why it is Paganism. Well, then, ‘the daily’ must mean Paganism.”

We see from Daniel 8 that it is the little horn, which succeeded the goat, or Grecian empire, that takes away the “daily;” and it is the only power brought to view after the division of Alexander’s kingdom down to the time when the Sanctuary should be cleansed at the end of the 2300 days. This little horn we have in its proper place showed to be Rome taken as a unit, corresponding with the fourth kingdom of Daniel’s other visions. Now it is a fact that a change did take place in the Roman power from Paganism to Papacy. Paganism from the days of the Assyrian kings down to the time of its modification into Popery, had been the daily, or as Professor Whiting renders it, ” the continual” desolation, by which Satan had stood up against the cause of Jehovah. In its priests, its altars, and its sacrifices, it bore resemblance to the Levitical form of Jehovah’s worship; but when the Levitical gave place to the Christian form of worship, Satan, in order to successfully oppose the work, must change also his form of opposition; hence the temples, altars and statues of Paganism are baptized into the blasphemies of Popery.

The Sanctuary of the Daily

But the daily, Paganism, is said in the prophecy, to have a sanctuary, and the place of its sanctuary was to be cast down. That a sanctuary is frequently connected with idolatry and heathenism, as the place of its devotion and worship, is evident from the following scriptures: Isaiah 16:12; Amos 7:9,13, margin; Ezekiel 28:18. Concerning the sanctuary of the daily of Daniel 8, we offer the following from Apollos Hale:

“What can be meant by the ‘sanctuary’ of Paganism? Paganism, and error of every kind, have their sanctuaries, as well as truth. These are the temples or asylums consecrated to their service. Some particular and renowned temple of Paganism may, then, be supposed to be here spoken of. Which of its numerous distinguished temples may it be? One of the most magnificent specimens of classic architecture is called the Pantheon. Its name signifies the ‘temple or asylum of all the gods.’ The place of its location is Rome. The idols of the nations conquered by the Romans were sacredly deposited in some niche or department of this temple, and in many cases became objects of worship by the Romans themselves. Could we find a temple of Paganism that was more strikingly ‘his sanctuary.’ ”

Having now ascertained that the daily is Paganism, and the transgression of desolation, or “the abomination that maketh desolate,” is the Papacy, and that the especial sanctuary of Paganism was the Pantheon, and that the “place” of its location was Rome, we inquire further.

Was Paganism “taken away” by the Roman civil power? The following statement of an important and well-known fact in the history of the church and world, we think answers to the prophecy. It refers to Constantine the first Christian emperor, and says:

“His first act of government was the dispatch of an edict throughout the empire, exhorting his subjects to embrace Christianity.”

The Place of his Sanctuary is Cast Down

Was Rome the city or place of his sanctuary, (the Pantheon,) cast down by the authority of the State? The following extract answers:

“The death of the last rival of Constantine had sealed the peace of the empire. Rome was once more the undisputed queen of nations. But, in that hour of elevation and splendor, she had been raised to the edge of a precipice. Her next step was to be downward and irrecoverable. The change of the government to Constantinople still perplexes the historian. It was an act in direct repugnance to the whole course of the ancient and honorable prejudices of the Roman mind. It was the work of no luxurious Asiatic, devoted to the indulgences of eastern customs and climates, but an iron conqueror, born in the west, and contemptuous, like all Romans, of the habits of the Orientals; it was the work of a keen politician, yet it was impolitic in the most palpable degree. Yet Constantine abandoned Rome, the great citadel and throne of the Caesars, for an obscure corner of Thrace, and expended the remainder of his vigorous and ambitious life in the double toil of raising a colony into the capital of his empire, and degrading the capital into the feeble honors and humiliated strength of a colony.”

This record from the pen of the historian, is too plain to need comment. The place of his sanctuary was cast down, says the prophecy; and after a statement of facts like the above, the most fastidious in prophetic interpretation must be satisfied of its application.

From Paganism to Popery

From the time that the daily shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to the thousand three hundred five and thirty days. With the facts before us that the daily is Paganism, that the abomination that maketh desolate is the Papacy, that there was a change from the former to the latter in the Roman power, and by the authority of State we have but to inquire further when this took place in a manner to fulfill the prophecy; for if we can ascertain this, we have the starting point from which the prophetic periods in the text before us are to be dated.

Therefore, when did the event referred to in the prophecy take place? Let it be observed, the question is not, when were the saints given into the hands of the Papacy, but when had the change of religion from Paganism to Papacy been so far effected as to make the latter the national religion, and place it in a condition to start upon its career. This, like all other great revolutions, was not the work of a moment. Its incipient workings were manifest long before. Paul said that even in his day the mystery of iniquity, the Man of Sin, the “abomination that maketh desolate,” was already at work. And it is in the light of this scripture that we must understand our Lord’s words in Matthew 24:15, concerning the abomination of desolation, where he makes evident reference to Daniel 9:27. For although Paganism had not given place to the Papacy in the year 70 when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans we do understand that the power which then appeared, modified somewhat in name and form, was the very power that should, as the abomination of desolation, wear out the saints and desolate the church of the Most High.

Up to the time of the conversion of Clovis, king of France, which took place in 496, the French and other nations of western Rome were Pagan; but subsequent to that event the efforts to convert idolaters to Christ were crowned with great success. It is said that the conversion of Clovis gave rise to the custom of addressing the French monarch with the titles of Most Christian Majesty and Eldest Son of the Church. “Between that time and A.D. 508 by alliances, capitulations, and conquests, the Arborici, the Roman garrisons in the west, Britanny, the Burgundians and the Visigoths, were brought into subjection.”

Paganism in the western Roman Empire, though it doubtless retarded the progress of the Christian faith, especially in those nations which were molested, as in the case of England, by the inroads of the barbarous clans, who continued idolaters, henceforth had not the power, if it had the disposition to suppress the Catholic faith, or to hinder the encroachments of the Roman Pontiff. From that time the Papal abomination was triumphant, so far as Paganism was concerned. Its future contests were with the other Christian sects, who were always treated as heretics; and with princes who were always treated as rebels or dividers of the body of Christ. The prominent powers of Europe gave up their attachment to Paganism only to perpetuate its abominations in another form; for Paganism needed only to be baptized to become Christian in the Catholic sense; and when the interests or vengeance of its presiding minister made the demand; their possessions and thrones, perhaps their lives, must be laid on the altar.

In England, Arthur, the first Christian king, founded the Christian worship on the ruins of the Pagan. Rapin, who claims to be more exact in the chronology of events in his history, states that he was elected monarch of Britain in 508. Book 2, 29.

What was the condition of the See of Rome at this time? “Symmachus was Pope from 498 or 9 to 514. His pontificate was distinguished by these remarkable circumstances and events: 1. He ‘left Paganism’ when he entered the ‘church of Rome.’ 2. He found his way to the Papal chair by striving with his competitor even unto blood. 3. By the adulation paid to him as the successor of St. Peter. 4. By the excommunication of the Emperor Anastasius.

“How much,” says Mosheim, “the opinions of some were favorable to the lordly demands of Roman Pontiffs, may be easily imagined from an expression of Ennodius, that infamous and extravagant flatterer of Symmachus, who was a prelate of ambiguous fame. This parasitical panegyrist, among other impertinent assertions maintained that the Pontiff was constituted judge in the place of God, which he filled as the Vicegerent of the Most High.”

A Dying Capital

By the strength secured to the Catholic cause in the West, by these successes, and the agency of the vicars, and other agents of the See of Rome, the Papal party in Constantinople were “placed” in a position to justify open hostilities in behalf of their master at Rome. “In 508 the whirlwind of fanaticism and civil war swept in fire and blood through the streets of the eastern capital.”

Gibbon, under the years 508-514, speaking of the commotions in Constantinople, says “The statues of the emperor were broken, and his person was concealed in a suburb, till, at the end of three days, he dared to implore the mercy of his subjects. [Popery is triumphant.] Without his diadem, and in the posture of a suppliant, Anastasius appeared on the throne of the circus. The Catholics, before his face, rehearsed the genuine Trisagion; they exulted in the offer which he proclaimed by the voice of a herald, of abdicating the purple; they listened to the admonition, that, since all could not reign, they should previously agree in the choice of a sovereign; and they accepted the blood of two unpopular ministers, whom their master, without hesitation, condemned to the lions. These furious but transient seditions were encouraged by the success of Vitalian, who with his army of Huns and Bulgarians, for the most part idolaters, declared himself the champion of the Catholic faith. In this pious rebellion he depopulated Thrace, besieged Constantinople, exterminated sixty-five thousand of his fellow Christians, till he obtained the recall of the bishops, the satisfaction of the Pope, and the establishment of the council of Chalcedon, an orthodox treaty, reluctantly signed by the dying Anastasius, and more faithfully performed by the uncle of Justinian. And such was the event of the first of the religious wars which have been waged in the name, and by the disciples, of the God of Peace.”

With the following extract of Appollos Hale, we close the testimony on this point: ” We now invite our modern Gamaliels to take a position with us in the place of the sanctuary of Paganism (since claimed as the ‘patrimony of St. Peter’) in 508. We look a few years into the past, and the rude Paganism of the northern barbarians is pouring down upon the nominally Christian empire of Western Rome–triumphing everywhere–and its triumphs everywhere distinguished by the most savage cruelty . . . The empire falls and is broken into fragments. One by one the lords and rulers of these fragments, abandon their Paganism and profess the Christian faith. In religion the conquerors are yielding to the conquered. But still Paganism is triumphant. Among its supporters there is one stern and successful conqueror. (Clovis) But soon he also bows before the power of the new faith and becomes its champion. He is still triumphant, but as a hero and conqueror, reaches the zenith at the point we occupy, A.D. 508.

The Final Blow

“In or near the same year, the last important subdivision of the fallen empire is publicly, and by the coronation of its triumphant ‘monarch’ christianized.

“The pontiff for the period on which we stand is recently converted Pagan. The bloody contest which placed him in the chair was decided by the interposition of an Arian king. He is bowed to and saluted as filling ‘the place of God on earth.’ The senate is so far under his power, that, on suspicion that the interests of the See of Rome demand it, they excommunicate the emperor . . . In 508 the mine is sprung beneath the throne of the Eastern Empire. The result of the confusion and strife it occasions is the humiliation of its rightful lord. Now the question is, At what time was Paganism so far suppressed, as to make room for its substitute and successor, the Papal abomination? When was this abomination placed in a position to start on its career of blasphemy and blood? Is there any other date for its being ‘placed’ or ‘set up’ in the room of Paganism, but 508? If the mysterious enchantress has not now brought all her victims within her power, she has taken her position, and some have yielded to the fascination. The others are at length subdued, ‘and kings, and peoples and multitudes, and nations, and tongues,’ are brought under the spell which prepares them, even while ‘drunken with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus,’ to ‘think they are doing God service,’ and to fancy themselves the exclusive favorites of heaven, while becoming an easier and richer prey for the damnation of hell.”

We have the date. The “daily” was taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up in 508. Dating from this point the 1290 days or years terminate in 1798 where, as has already been shown , the civil power was stricken from the Pope by the arm of Buonaparte. The 1335 days bring us 45 full years this side of that event.

But some may say, How is it that you make the periods terminate in the past? Does it not read that Daniel should rest and stand in his lot at the end of the days? Certainly; and we believe it. But what is it for Daniel to stand in his lot? This point will come under consideration when we come to an explanation of the passing of the time, and an examination of the events that did take place at the end of the days. Meanwhile we here cast anchor till another week.

The End

The Time of the End

“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Daniel 12:4.

The time of the end noted in this text is not the end itself. It is evidently a period of time just prior to the end. In the time of the end, many were to run to and fro and knowledge upon the grand subject before the prophet’s mind was to be increased.

The words of the book, named in the text, are undoubtedly the prophecy of Daniel, the several chains of which reach down to the close of all earthly kingdoms at the Second Coming of Christ

Shut up the words, and seal the book. Prophecy is history in advance. To the prophets themselves, their own prophecies could afford but little light, the prophetic scenery spread out before them being the history of the future. The apostle, speaking of the prophecies relative to the plan of salvation embracing the sufferings of Christ at His first advent and also the glory that should follow at His Second Advent, says: “Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you; searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.” I Peter 1:10–12.

Prophecies Not Especially for the Prophets Themselves

The prophecies relative to the first advent of Christ were not an especial light to the prophets in their day, but they were given for the benefit of the believing about the time of their fulfillment. From the very nature of the case, they were, in a degree at least, shut up until about that time. So with those prophecies which relate to the Second Advent. They were not designed for the especial benefit of the prophets, the apostles, the martyrs, or the Reformers; but they are an especial light to those who live in the time of the end. The book was to be shut up and sealed until that period of time, called the time of the end, should arrive. What then?

Many shall run to and fro. Whether this be fulfilled in turning and searching to and fro in the Scriptures for light upon the subject of the fulfillment of prophecy, or by men called of God to the work traveling to and fro with the message from God to the people upon this subject, the fulfillment is evident. Both have been done within the last half century as never before.

Duffield on Prophecy, 373, says: “The word translated, run to and fro, is metaphorically used to denote investigation, close, diligent, accurate observation—just as the eyes of the Lord are said to run to and fro. The reference is not to missionary exertions in particular but to the study of the Scriptures, especially the sealed book of prophecy.”

Clarke says: “Many shall run to and fro. Many shall endeavor to search out the sense; and knowledge shall be increased by these means. This seems to be the meaning of this verse, though another has been put upon it; viz., ‘Many shall run to and fro preaching the gospel of Christ, and therefore religious knowledge and true wisdom shall be increased.’ This is true in itself, but it is not the meaning of the prophet’s words.”

Matthew Henry says, “They shall read it over and over, shall meditate upon it; they shall discourse of it, talk it over, sift out the meaning of it, and thus knowledge shall be increased.”

Gill says: “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased; that is, toward the end of the time appointed, many shall be stirred up to inquire into these things delivered in this book and will spare no pains nor cost to get a knowledge of them; will read and study the Scriptures and meditate on them, compare one passage with another, spiritual things with spiritual, in order to obtain the mind of Christ; will carefully peruse the writings of such who have lived before them, who have attempted anything of this kind; and will go far and near to converse with persons who have any understanding of such things; and by such means, with the blessing of God upon them the knowledge of this book of prophecy will be increased and things will appear plainer and clearer the nearer the accomplishment of them is; and especially when prophecy and facts can be compared.

An Increase of Knowledge Relative to Prophecy

Knowledge shall be increased. This does not mean general knowledge, but the words must be limited to the subject presented to Daniel. The book of Daniel contains chains of prophecy which reach down to the end of earthly kingdoms and the judgment. Chapters 11 and 12 are one chain reaching down to the time when Michael shall stand up, the time of trouble such as never was, and the resurrection of many. In chapter 12:6, one says to “the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?” The end of the wonders is the close of those scenes connected with the judgment. In the next verse the answer is given by the man clothed in linen, with a most solemn oath, with both hands raised to heaven.

But says Daniel: “I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?” Verse8. The prophet here makes earnest inquiries relative to the scenes connected with the Second Advent. Read the angel’s reply: “Go thy way, Daniel; for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.” Verse 9. The prophecy of Daniel, which points distinctly to the period of the Second Advent, was closed up and sealed till the time of the end. What then? In verse 4, Daniel was told that in the time of the end many should run to and fro and knowledge should be increased. This relates to the theoretical part of the work. But in verse 10, the angel’s answer to the earnest inquiry of the prophet relates to the work of preparation and the results of the great Second Advent movement. He says: “Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

Only Two Classes

Here are two classes, the wicked and the wise. The wise are those who are being purified and made white. They are wise in reference to the things of God and the kingdom of heaven. They understand by the opening prophecies the events which terminate the wonders shown to the prophet. They see these things clearly, believe, prepare, and rejoice in the blessed hope. Here we should be impressed with the practical bearing of the Second Advent faith and hope. The truly wise, those who are being “purified, and made white, and tried,” understand. They will listen to the voice of warning and will be instructed and will understand that the day of the Lord is coming and hasteth greatly. They will be waiting and watching and will be ready when the Lord shall come. Of these Paul speaks: “And unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.” Hebrews 9:28. Or, as Peter exhorts: “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” II Peter 3:14. Again, “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.” Verse 11.

But the wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall understand. They do not seek for the Spirit of truth. They are led by the spirit of error. They doubt, scoff, and mark their course of rebellion against the truth of God by doing wickedly. May God pity the blind sinner.

That there is a period of time in which the church is especially to look for the Second Coming of Christ is evident. Many, however, take the ground that it was right for the early Christians to look for Christ’s Second Coming in their day, that it has been Scriptural for the followers of Christ in each generation since to expect His coming in their day, and that nothing more, in this respect, is required of the church at this time.

It is true that some of the early church received the idea that Christ would come in their day. It is evident that the Thessalonian church thus believed from the fact that the apostle Paul, in his second epistle to them, corrects this error. He says: “Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering unto Him, that you be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God.” II Thessalonians 2:1–4.

Paul Did not Expect Christ’s Return in His Day

From this testimony we conclude that there were those who had taught the Thessalonians to expect the Second Advent in their day. But the apostle exhorts them not to be troubled with this idea and warns them against being deceived by it. He then states that the day of Christ would not come except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin (the papacy) be revealed. He points the church of Christ down over the period of the apostasy and the twelve hundred and sixty years of papal supremacy, to near our time, and guards all the way with a warning against being deceived with the idea that Christ might come during that period. Why did his warning cease there? Answer: At that point, the time of the end commenced when the prophecy of Daniel was to be unsealed, knowledge on the subject of Christ’s coming was to be increased, and many run to and fro.

What a beautiful harmony in the testimonies of the angel and of Paul. The angel says to Daniel, “The words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.” Paul says to his brethren, “That day shall not come except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed.” The apostle’s warning reaches down to the time of the end when the words were to be unsealed. This plainly shows that the last half century has been the period for the subject of the Second Advent to be brought out and that this is the only time when the church of Christ could scripturally look for the coming of the Lord.

Judgment Is Upon Us, Are We Prepared For It?

In the Bible we find that God has, at different times, given life and death warnings. Moses came to Egypt and had a message from God—”Let My people go.” They rejected the message; and Pharaoh replied, “Who is God that He should tell us that?” As a result, they first lost their cattle, then their crops, and eventually their first born. Finally, they lost their army and Pharaoh himself.

Jeremiah came to Israel with a life and death message, calling them to repent and to return to the true worship of God. They wanted to hear love spoken and thought that his message was too straight; they cast him into a miry pit. Because they rejected Him, God could not protect them; and although they claimed to be worshiping Him, going through the motions of religion, their city was completely destroyed.

Then there was John the Baptist who came with a message of repentance to Israel. They rejected the message, and what happened? Again, Jerusalem was destroyed and lay in ruins for many years. The Jewish people were scattered all over the world.

So at various times, God has had life and death messages that have been given to various groups, individuals, and nations. But twice in this world’s history, He has had a life and death message for the whole world. The first one came through Noah. “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, ’I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth. Both man and beast, creeping things, and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’” Genesis 6:5–7. Conditions then must have been something like today. The Bible says that every imagination of man’s heart was evil continually.

God said that it had become unbearable to allow this to go on in the universe, and he decided that He was going to put a check on sin. But God is merciful; He did not do it overnight. “And the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.’” Ibid., verse 3. In I Peter 3, we find that this power that pled with men was the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and that was manifested at Pentecost. It was not just human power; it was the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us that when God sends a warning message the second time, it will again be as in Noah’s time. There will be many scoffers. “Knowing this first, that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the father fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of Creation.’ For this they willfully forget that by the Word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same Word, reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” II Peter 3:3–7. Notice it says that they willfully forget. In other words, they choose to ignore the evidence by which they might have a knowledge of the flood. The world today is being kept in store by this same power; but this time it is not to be destroyed by water but by fire—the fire at Jesus’ Second Coming.

Now there were scoffers in Noah’s day, and there are scoffers today. But scoffers did not change the facts then, nor will they today. God has given evidence by which, if people are interested, they can find that the Bible is true. Even if the whole world disbelieves God’s Word, His Word is still going to come true!

Now, if the judgment has come, and if it is going to be preached, someone must know that it has begun. Somewhere in the Bible there must be a time pointed out as to when the judgment is going to begin. Paul tells us in Acts 17:31, “He has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness.” God has had to put the date for the judgment some place in the Bible, and we want to find it.

Daniel 7 gives us an approximate date for the beginning of the judgment, though it does not give us an exact time. “I watched until thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire; a fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.”” Daniel 7:9, 10.

Now if you will continue on to verses 11–13, you will see that this is not yet the end of the world. “I watched then [after the court had been seated] because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking.” We find in Revelation that while the horn reigned for 1,260 years, at which time it received a deadly wound, yet it would be healed and all of the world would wonder after the beast. So Daniel hears the horn speaking after the judgment has set.

There is a principle that every prophecy builds on the one before it. The prophecy of Daniel 8 covers much of the same history as Daniel 7. It begins with the rule of Medo-Persia and relates the fall of that kingdom before Alexander the Great. After giving more details about the rule of Greece, it goes over the reign of the little horn power. When it comes to the end of the little horn power, it also goes into the judgment; but this prophecy gives us something a little more specific. “And he said unto me, ‘For two thousand three hundred days then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.’” Daniel 8:14. The Jews knew what that terminology meant. The cleansing of the sanctuary was a term that had reference to the Day of Atonement, which was a period of judgment for the Jews. Because we are dealing with prophetic time, we know this to be a time period of two thousand three hundred literal years. This places the judgment a great distance into the future.

“Now it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said; ‘Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.’ So he came near where I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but he said to me, ‘Understand, son of man, that the vision refers to the time of the end.’” Verses 15–17. We know that the time period stretches to the time of the end; but without a starting point, this still is not very specific.

Gabriel was told to explain the vision to Daniel, but he was not able to finish because Daniel fainted. Upon his recovery, however, Daniel kept praying and the angel came back. “Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, ‘O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.’” Daniel 9:20–23.

To what vision is Gabriel referring? The vision in chapter 8! This is the vision which Gabriel started to explain, but Daniel became sick before he finished explaining about the 2,300 days. “Go finish your explanation,” God said. “You did not finish.”

The only part of that vision which had not been explained was the part dealing with time. Naturally, Gabriel does not go back and talk about the powers of Greece and Medo-Persia; he starts right in where he left off, explaining the 2,300 days. “Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; . . . . Then He shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.” Verses 24–27.

Now there is an unfortunate mistranslation here. The word determined is from the word chathak. In Hebrew it literally means, cut off. The reason the translators did not translate it that way is because, failing to go back to the previous vision, they could not determine from what it was cut off. Seventy weeks must be cut off from some larger period of time. There is only time period in the vision of the beginning and that is the 2,300 days, or years. Now he said, 70 weeks are cut off from this 2,300-day period. Seventy weeks is 490 literal years. If you cut 490 from 2,300, there are 1,810 years left. In other words, of the 2,300 years, 490 were given especially to the Jewish people.

The 490-day period began with the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. This took place in 457 B.C. It then extended until A.D. 34. At that time, Stephen was stoned and persecution broke out in Jerusalem, scattering the followers of Jesus everywhere. It was then that the gospel began to go to the Gentiles. By the way, as 1844 follows 1798, it also fits the prophecy of Daniel 7.
Other than the prophecy in Daniel 8 and 9, there is no prophecy in all of the Bible that reveals a date for the judgment to begin. Daniel 7 gives the approximate date for the judgment to begin, but Daniel 8 is the only one that gives the time.

“As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man.” Luke 17:26. In Noah’s day, those who heeded God’s warning, though very few in number, were saved, while those who scoffed at the message were lost. The Bible says that there is coming a judgment. It also tells us that the judgment message will be preached with a loud voice. I believe, according to Bible prophecy, that the judgment has already begun. When it is ended, the destiny of all mankind will have been decided. When the judgment is over, the pronouncement will be made, “He who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still. ‘And behold, I am coming quickly.’” Revelation 22:11, 12.

This has not yet taken place, but the time is rapidly approaching when all decisions relative to salvation will have been irrevocably made. Remember, the flood did not come immediately after Noah entered the ark and the door was closed. There were still seven days, but probation was closed. Everyone had made his final decision. “As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the day before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away.” Matthew 24:37, 39.

When probation closes, no one is going to know on earth; but their destiny will be fixed. People did not know that their destiny had been fixed when Noah entered the ark, but it had been fixed. In Noah’s day, God gave them 120 years. The final judgment message has already been being proclaimed for a longer period than that, but God is still waiting. Do you know why He is waiting? He is waiting for us, because He loves us so much. Not everyone has made a decision yet, and God wants to give us a little more time. “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9.

Today, God’s message is going to all the world. Where you and I will be a million years from now depends on what we do with God’s message today. In Noah’s day, every person who was saved had to make a choice to be in the ark. They did not have to make a choice to be outside, as that is where they already were. There is not a man nor woman who has to make a decision to be lost; we are already lost. If you would be saved, however, you have to make a decision to follow God. It is not something that just comes naturally. You have to say, “Lord, I am going to follow You all the way.”

America In Prophecy

When the Fourth of July is mentioned, most people think of the flag, food, and fireworks. Few, very few, think of its significance in the fulfilment of Bible prophecy.

While prophecy does not specifically mention the birth date of this nation, it does indeed mention the birth—a fact that most students of prophecy recognize from Revelation 13:11: “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.”

Though prophecy does not mention the specific date of this nation’s birth, it does give clues as to the approximate point in history. As the pioneers of our faith studied the Scriptures, they determined that this two-horned beast was indeed the United States. Uriah Smith wrote in his classic Daniel and the Revelation, “The struggle of the American colonies for independence began in 1775. In 1776, they declared themselves a free and independent nation. In 1777, delegates from the thirteen original States … in Congress assembled, adopted Articles of Confederation. In 1783, the War of the Revolution closed with a treaty of peace with Great Britain, whereby the independence of the United States was acknowledged, and territory was ceded … . In 1787, the Constitution was framed, and by July 26, 1788, it was ratified …; and on the 1st of March, 1789, it went into effect. The United States thus began… . Thus we come to the year 1798, when this nation is introduced into prophecy.”

Further confirmation of the United States in prophecy occurs in the book that Ellen White deemed to be the one that should be the most widely distributed of all her writings, The Great Controversy:

“… The beast with lamblike horns was seen ‘coming up out of the earth (Revelation 13:11).’ Instead of overthrowing other powers to establish itself, the nation thus represented must arise in territory previously unoccupied and grow up gradually and peacefully. It could not, then, arise among the crowded and struggling nationalities of the Old World—that turbulent sea of ‘peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues’ (Revelation 17:16). It must be sought in the Western Continent.

“What nation of the New World was in 1798 rising into power, giving promise of strength and greatness, and attracting the attention of the world? The application of the symbol admits of no question. One nation, and only one, meets the specifications of this prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America. Again and again the thought, almost the exact words, of the sacred writer has been unconsciously employed by the orator and the historian in describing the rise and growth of this nation. The beast was seen ‘coming up out of the earth’; and, according to the translators, the word here rendered ‘coming up’ literally signifies ‘to grow or spring up as a plant.’ And, as we have seen, the nation must arise in territory previously unoccupied. A prominent writer, describing the rise of the United States, speaks of ‘the mystery of her coming forth from vacancy,’ and says: ‘Like a silent seed we grew into empire.’ (G. A. Townsend, The New World Compared With the Old, 462). A European journal in 1850 spoke of the United States as a wonderful empire, which was ‘emerging,’ and ‘amid the silence of the earth daily adding to its power and pride.’ The Dublin Nation. Edward Everett, in an oration on the Pilgrim founders of this nation, said: ‘Did they look for a retired spot, inoffensive for its obscurity, and safe in its remoteness, where the little church of Leyden might enjoy the freedom of conscience? Behold the mighty regions over which, in peaceful conquest, … they have borne the banners of the cross!’ – Speech delivered at Plymouth, Massachusetts, December 22, 1824, 11.” The Great Controversy, 440, 441.

Unmistakably the United States has existed in the mind of God since eternity, for the role it has played in the past, continues to play today, and will play in the future of the great controversy between Christ and Satan is clear in the unfolding of that controversy.

What role has the United States played in prophecy in each of these eras—the past, present, and future? Again we turn to the writings of our pioneers for understanding.

“In that grand old document which our forefathers set forth as their bill of rights—the Declaration of Independence—they declared: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ And the Constitution guarantees, in the most explicit terms, the inviolability of conscience: ‘No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.’ ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.’ ” The Great Controversy, 295.

“…The Constitution [of the United States] guarantees to the people the right of self-government, providing that representatives elected by the popular vote shall enact and administer the laws. Freedom of religious faith was also granted, every man being permitted to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience. Republicanism and Protestantism became the fundamental principles of the nation. These principles are the secret of its power and prosperity. The oppressed and down-trodden throughout Christendom have turned to this land with interest and hope. Millions have sought its shores, and the United States has risen to a place among the most powerful nations of the earth.” The Great Controversy, 441.

Until recent years, these principles that have made this country the great nation that it is have allowed it to become the most prosperous nation on earth, but prophecy does not end there.

“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.” Revelation 13:15.

“By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 451.

“When the protection of human laws shall be withdrawn from those who honor the law of God, there will be, in different lands, a simultaneous movement for their destruction. As the time appointed in the decree draws near, the people will conspire to root out the hated sect. It will be determined to strike in one night a decisive blow, which shall utterly silence the voice of dissent and reproof.” The Great Controversy, 635.

“The same masterful mind that plotted against the faithful in ages past is still seeking to rid the earth of those who fear God and obey His law. Satan will excite indignation against the humble minority who conscientiously refuse to accept popular customs and traditions. Men of position and reputation will join with the lawless and the vile to take counsel against the people of God. Wealth, genius, education, will combine to cover them with contempt. Persecuting rulers, ministers, and church members will conspire against them. With voice and pen, by boasts, threats, and ridicule, they will seek to overthrow their faith. By false representations and angry appeals they will stir up the passions of the people. Not having a ‘Thus saith the Scriptures’ to bring against the advocates of the Bible Sabbath, they will resort to oppressive enactments to supply the lack. To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for a Sunday law.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 451, 452.

Despite these ominous and foreboding prophecies, God’s people can take great comfort in His inspired promises.

“The eye of God, looking down the ages, was fixed upon the crisis which His people are to meet, when earthly powers shall be arrayed against them. Like the captive exile, they will be in fear of death by starvation or by violence. But the Holy One who divided the Red Sea before Israel, will manifest His mighty power and turn their captivity.” The Great Controversy, 634.

As prophetic events unfold, those who have studied prophecy can take great comfort. Recognizing fulfilment of prophecies past provides assurance that prophecies future will also be fulfilled, and that God’s people—those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus—will indeed stand without fault before the throne of God.

As we observe the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, let us reflect on the role of the United States in prophecy and give praise and thanksgiving to our loving Father for having given us understanding of that role—especially as we see the final events transpiring that tell us that the meeting of time and eternity are drawing nigh.

Heavenly Celebrations

Scripture and Inspiration tell us of great celebrations that take place in heaven, all a part of different phases of the plan of redemption or the new covenant. An understanding of the setting of these celebrations, their purposes and how they relate to us here on earth will enable us to more fully understand God’s wonderful plan for man’s redemption. Some of them have already taken place and some are to take place in the future. To understand these celebrations we need to understand the covenant God made with man.

“The covenant of grace was first made with man in Eden, when after the Fall there was given a divine promise that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent’s head. To all men this covenant offered pardon and the assisting grace of God for future obedience through faith in Christ. It also promised them eternal life on condition of fidelity to God’s law. Thus the patriarchs received the hope of salvation.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 370.

The covenant was a plan by the Father and the Son to free the fallen race from sin and restore mankind to the kingdom of glory. Obedience and freedom from sin are requirements for us to return to that kingdom.

“This same covenant was renewed to Abraham in the promise, ‘In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed’ (Genesis 22:18). This promise pointed to Christ.” Ibid.

“Though this covenant was made with Adam and renewed to Abraham, it could not be ratified until the death of Christ. It had existed by the promise of God since the first intimation of redemption had been given; it had been accepted by faith; yet when ratified by Christ, it is called a new covenant. The law of God was the basis of this covenant which was simply an arrangement for bringing men again into harmony with the divine will, placing them where they could obey God’s law.” [Emphasis author’s.] Patriarchs and Prophets, 370, 371.

This new covenant is called by different names—Abrahamic covenant, plan of salvation, plan of redemption, among others. In Revelation 14:6 in the first angel’s message it is called the everlasting or eternal gospel because it was made between the Father and the Son, two eternal beings.

This covenant is wholly a product of divine creation. John 3:14–17 states: “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” Because of the love of God and His Son for the pinnacle of their creation, they formed this covenant so that whoever believes and follows its terms and conditions can be restored to the kingdom of glory.

We are told that there is a sanctuary connected with this covenant. “ ‘Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a Minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man’ (Hebrews 8:1, 2). Here is revealed the sanctuary of the new covenant.” The Great Controversy, 413.

Another statement confirms this: “The term ‘sanctuary,’ as used in the Bible, refers first, to the tabernacle built by Moses, as a pattern of heavenly things; and, secondly, to the ‘true tabernacle’ in heaven, to which the earthly sanctuary pointed. At the death of Christ the typical service ended. The ‘true tabernacle’ in heaven is the sanctuary of the new covenant.” Ibid., 417.

The weight of evidence shows that the foundation of the Christian faith is this covenant, and its terms are carried out by Christ in the sanctuary in heaven. The two are interlocked. Everybody who is saved will have their name pass through that sanctuary and have his or her sins confessed and atoned for by the blood of Christ.

“The plan of salvation had been laid before the creation of the earth; for Christ is ‘the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world’ (Revelation 13:8); yet it was a struggle, even with the King of the universe, to yield up His Son to die for the guilty race. But ‘God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life’ (John 3:16). Oh, the mystery of redemption! the love of God for a world that did not love Him! Who can know the depths of that love which ‘passeth knowledge’ (Ephesians 3:19)? Through endless ages immortal minds, seeking to comprehend the mystery of that incomprehensible love, will wonder and adore.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 63.

There are seven celebrations which take place over a period of time in heaven involving this covenant.

Celebration No. I. The Institution of the Covenant with Adam and Eve in heaven.

The whole universe is intensely interested in the carrying out of this great plan of salvation. All heaven watched with great anxiety as Satan, in the guise of a beautiful serpent, engaged Eve in conversation. With great sorrow they watched Eve and then Adam eat of the forbidden fruit. The angels loved Adam and Eve and they offered to pay the penalty for their transgression. They were so anxious to have the covenant ratified that we could be saved that they were willing to give their lives.

“The angels prostrated themselves at the feet of their Commander and offered to become a sacrifice for man (but they were created beings and could not meet the requirements of that covenant). …

“Christ assured the angels that by His death He would ransom many, and would destroy him [Satan] who had the power of death. He would recover the kingdom which man had lost by transgression, and the redeemed were to inherit it with Him, and dwell therein forever. Sin and sinners would be blotted out, nevermore to disturb the peace of heaven or earth.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 64, 65.

With that good news the first celebration took place. “Then joy, inexpressible joy, filled heaven. The glory and blessedness of a world redeemed outmeasured even the anguish and sacrifice of the Prince of life. Through the celestial courts echoed the first strains of that song which was to ring out above the hills of Bethlehem ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men’ (Luke 2:14). With a deeper gladness now than in the rapture of the new creation, ‘the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy’ (Job 38:7).” Ibid.

All heaven is interested in the recovery of mankind to Eden. Thus the first celebration in the universe was connected with the great plan of salvation. This time of rejoicing, this celebration, was based on promises that the covenant would be ratified and on the promise that by confession and separation from sins the blood of Christ would atone for them.

Celebration No. II. The Birth of Jesus

Angels came to earth to announce the birth of Jesus.

“Above the hills of Bethlehem are gathered an innumerable throng of angels. They wait the signal to declare the glad news to the world. Had the leaders in Israel been true to their trust, they might have shared the joy of heralding the birth of Jesus. But now they are passed by.” The Desire of Ages, 47. These leaders of the church were looking for a Saviour to deliver them, not from sin, but from the control of the Pagan Roman Empire. So the angels passed them by.

“In the fields where the boy David had led his flock, shepherds were still keeping watch by night. Through the silent hours they talked together of the promised Saviour, and prayed for the coming of the King to David’s throne. ‘And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord’ (Luke 2:10, 11). …

“The heavenly messenger had quieted their fears. He had told them how to find Jesus. With tender regard for their human weakness, he had given them time to become accustomed to the divine radiance. Then the joy and glory could no longer be hidden. The whole plain was lighted up with the bright shining of the hosts of God. Earth was hushed, and heaven stooped to listen to the song – ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men’ (Luke 2:14).” Ibid., 47, 48.

The same song that the angels sang at the institution of the covenant 4,000 years earlier they sang again to these shepherds.

“Oh that today the human family could recognize that song! The declaration then made, the note then struck, will swell to the close of time, and resound to the ends of the earth. When the Sun of Righteousness shall arise, with healing in His wings, that song will be re-echoed by the voice of a great multitude, as the voice of many waters, saying, ‘Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth’ (Revelation 19:6).” Ibid.

This song will be the theme of the new covenant from the beginning to the end of the execution of the plan of salvation.

“The story of Bethlehem is an exhaustless theme. In it is hidden ‘the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God’ (Romans 11:33).” Ibid.

Celebration No. III. Opening of the Holy Place

After Jesus had provided His blood by His sacrifice on Calvary, He ascended to heaven. The story of this celebration is found in Revelation 4:2–6 and 9–11: “At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing.” Here is described the Father sitting on His throne surrounded by 24 of the highest officials in the government of heaven. The seven lamps in the earthly sanctuary were found in the first apartment of the holy place.

“There are cherubim and seraphim. The commanders of the angel hosts, the sons of God, the representatives of the unfallen worlds, are assembled. … all are there to welcome the Redeemer. They are eager to celebrate His triumph and to glorify their King.” The Desire of Ages, 834.

“Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures. … Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.’ Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him Who sits on the throne and Who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him Who sits on the throne, and worship Him Who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: ‘You are worthy our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.’ ” Revelation 4:6–11.

The scene continues into chapter 5. In the first four verses John tells about a little book in the hand of the one sitting on the throne. No one can be found who can open it. John begins to weep because he wants to know what is in that book. Then the scene changes in verse five:

“Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah [Jesus], the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.’ Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne” (verses 5, 6).

Jesus had ascended to the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary after His resurrection. This celebration was all about receiving Jesus and His appearance reminds John of the crucifixion—of the Lamb slain on the cross.

The Desire of Ages picks up this story of Revelation 4 and 5 beginning at page 833. “All heaven was waiting to welcome the Saviour to the celestial courts. As He ascended, He led the way, and the multitude of captives set free at His resurrection followed. The heavenly host, with shouts and acclamations of praise and celestial song, attended the joyous train.

“As they drew near to the city of God, the challenge is given by the escorting angels –

‘Lift up your heads, O ye gates;

And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors;

And the King of glory shall come in’ (Psalm 24:7).

“Joyfully the waiting sentinels respond,

‘Who is this King of glory?’

“This they say, not because they know not who He is, but because they would hear the answer of exalted praise –

‘The Lord strong and mighty,

The Lord mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O ye gates;

Even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;

And the King of glory shall come in’ (verses 8, 9).

“Then the portals of the city of God are opened wide, and the angelic throng sweep through the gates amid a burst of rapturous music.” The Desire of Ages, 833.

All heaven is celebrating that Jesus has come home. This is quite a contrast from when He left the earth and a few disciples gathered to watch Him ascend, not really understanding what was taking place. God desires that His church on earth be celebrating in harmony with His church in heaven.

“There is the throne, and around it the rainbow of promise. There are cherubim and seraphim. The commanders of the angel hosts, the sons of God, the representatives of the unfallen worlds, are assembled. … all are there to welcome the Redeemer. They are eager to celebrate His triumph and to glorify their King.” Ibid., 834.

The scene changes again and the celebration now seen is the inauguration of Jesus as High Priest in the sanctuary of the new covenant in heaven following His ascension in A.D. 31. Notice what happens:

“But He waves them back. Not yet; He cannot now receive the coronet of glory and the royal robe. He enters into the presence of His Father. He points to His wounded head, the pierced side, the marred feet; He lifts His hands, bearing the print of nails. He points to the tokens of His triumph; He presents to God the wave sheaf, those raised with Him, as representatives of that great multitude who shall come forth from the grave at His second coming. He approaches the Father, with whom there is joy over one sinner that repents; who rejoices over one with singing. Before the foundations of the earth were laid, the Father and the Son had united in a covenant [of grace] to redeem man if he should be overcome by Satan. They had clasped Their hands in a solemn pledge that Christ should become the surety for the human race. This pledge Christ has fulfilled. When upon the cross He cried out, ‘It is finished’ (John 19:30). He addressed the Father. The compact had been fully carried out. Now He declares: Father, it is finished. I have done Thy will, O My God. I have completed the work of redemption. If Thy justice is satisfied, ‘I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am’ (John 19:30; 17:24).

“The voice of God is heard proclaiming that justice is satisfied. Satan is vanquished. … The Father’s arms encircle His Son, and the word is given, ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him’ (Hebrew 1:6).” Ibid.

The disciple John was enamored with the scene. The appearance of Jesus has changed from that of a Lamb looking as if it had been slain to that of a high priest.

“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands (the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary) and among the lampstands was someone ‘like a son of man,’ dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of rushing waters. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.” Revelation 1:12–16.

Jesus no longer appears like a Lamb slain. When He went in before the Father, He was changed and inaugurated as High Priest and now had the authority to take and open the book that no one, according to verses 1–4, could open.

“He went and took the scroll from the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. [The highest officials in the government of heaven now bow down before the newly inaugurated High Priest. In this inauguration ceremony Jesus has been elevated above all the leaders of the universe except God the Father.] … And they sang a new song: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slain, and with Your blood You purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.’ ” Revelation 5:7–10.

Now that the covenant is established, anyone can go to Jesus in the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary, confess his sins, dedicate himself to Christ and receive eternal life through the atoning blood of Christ.

“Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: ‘Worthy is the Lamb, who is slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!’ Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: ‘To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever!’ ” Revelation 5:11–13.

The whole universe now praises God the Father and Jesus the Lamb for establishing the great plan of salvation, the new covenant. This is undoubtedly the greatest celebration thus far in the great controversy between Christ and Satan in carrying out the plan of salvation.

“With joy unutterable, rulers and principalities and powers acknowledge the supremacy of the Prince of life. The angel host prostrate themselves before Him, while the glad shout fills all the courts of heaven, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing’ (Revelation 5:12).

“Songs of triumph mingle with the music from angel harps, till heaven seems to overflow with joy and praise. Love has conquered. The lost is found. Heaven rings with voices in lofty strains proclaiming, ‘Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever’ (Revelation 5:13).

“From that scene of heavenly joy, there comes back to us on earth the echo of Christ’s own wonderful words, ‘I ascend unto My Father, and your Father; and to My God, and your God’ (John 20:17). The family of heaven and the family of earth are one. For us our Lord ascended, and for us He lives. ‘Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them’ (Hebrew 7:25).” The Desire of Ages, 834, 835.

The next celebration is even greater in glory and magnificence than this one.

Celebration No. IV. Opening of the Most Holy Place, the Investigative Phase of the Judgment and the Wedding of the Lamb

In The Great Controversy, 426, we are given information about this fourth celebration.

“In the summer and autumn of 1844 the proclamation, ‘Behold, the Bridegroom cometh’ (Matthew 25:6), was given. … The coming of the bridegroom, here brought to view, takes place before the marriage.”

Daniel 7:9, 10 and 13 talks about this great celebration: “As I looked, ‘thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was a white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened. In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.’ ”

This passage describes the coming of the Bridegroom to the wedding. In The Great Controversy, 427, it states: “Christ, as stated by the prophet Daniel, will receive from the Ancient of Days in heaven, ‘dominion, and glory, and a kingdom’ (Daniel 7:14).”

We know that the Bridegroom came to the Ancient of Days on October 22, 1844, but the wedding does not take place until after the close of probation.

“He ‘shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne.’ Not now ‘upon the throne of His glory;’ the kingdom of glory has not yet been ushered in. Not until His work as a mediator shall be ended will God ‘give unto Him the throne of His father David,’ a kingdom of which ‘there shall be no end’ (Luke 1:32, 33).” Ibid., 416.

We now understand that the period of the investigative judgment is a preparation time for the wedding. At its close Jesus will receive the New Jerusalem, the capital of His kingdom, “prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:2.

“The marriage represents the reception by Christ of His kingdom. The Holy City, the New Jerusalem, which is the capital and representative of the kingdom, is called ‘the bride, the Lamb’s wife.’ Said the angel to John: ‘Come hither, I will show thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.’ ‘He carried me away in the spirit,’ says the prophet, ‘and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God’ (Revelation 21:9, 10.” Ibid., 426.

Daniel 7:14 tells us, “He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.”

“At the appointed time the Bridegroom came, not to the earth, as the people expected, but to the Ancient of Days in heaven, to the marriage, the reception of His kingdom. ‘They that were ready went in with Him to the marriage: and the door was shut’ (Matthew 25:10).

“They were not to be present in person at the marriage; for it takes place in heaven, while they are upon the earth. The followers of Christ are to ‘wait for their Lord, when He will return from the wedding’ (Luke 12:36).” The Great Controversy. 427.

At the second coming, Jesus will gather His people to attend the wedding banquet. “He will receive the New Jerusalem, the capital of His kingdom, ‘prepared as a bride adorned for her husband’ (Daniel 7:14; Revelation 21:2). Having received the kingdom, He will come in His glory, as King of kings and Lord of lords, for the redemption of His people, who are to ‘sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob,’ at His table in His kingdom (Matthew 8:11; Luke 22:30), to partake of the marriage supper of the Lamb.” Ibid., 426.

“ ‘He shall bear the glory’ (Zechariah 6:13). To Christ belongs the glory of redemption for the fallen race. Through the eternal ages, the song of the ransomed ones will be: ‘Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood … to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever’ (Revelation 1:5, 6).” Ibid., 416.

What a wonderful Saviour we have Who gives us this picture of what is happening and to share with us the joy that is taking place in heaven. Our hearts can be part of these celebrations, as we understand the word of God and the Spirit of Prophecy. There are three more celebrations to come. Are you preparing your heart to be part of them? The Seven Letters

The wise man said, “That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.” Ecclesiastes 3:15. There are libraries full of history books that record those things that have been to enable us to learn from the past.

Many people are afraid to study the book of Revelation. It is not a book that should be avoided or just lightly skimmed through, but one that should be understood. In fact, the book begins and ends with an encouraging promise. John said, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein, for the time is at hand.” Revelation 1:3. And again at the end, “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” Revelation 22:7.

It is impossible to keep something that you do not have. The word keep, according to Webster’s dictionary means to take notice of by appropriate conduct. This means more than a mere mental assent. “And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand” (Revelation 22:10).

Revelation is to be understood by the people of God, especially in the final hours of earth’s history. Ellen White wrote, “When we as a people understand what this book means to us, there will be seen among us a great revival. We do not understand fully the lessons that it teaches, notwithstanding the injunction given us to search and study it.” Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 113.

“When the churches are revived, it is because some individual seeks earnestly for the blessing of God. He hungers and thirsts after God, and asks in faith, and receives accordingly. He goes to work in earnest, feeling his great dependence on the Lord, and souls are aroused to seek for a like blessing, and a season of refreshing falls on the hearts of men.” The Review and Herald, March 13, 1888.

A revival begins with one individual catching a view of the glory of Jesus that moves him to be earnest in searching his own heart and in diligent work for the salvation of souls. With this spirit, others are infused.

Christ commissioned John to write letters to the seven churches of Asia. He said, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. … And He had in His right hand seven stars: and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and His countenance was as the sun in his strength. … Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in My right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” Revelation 1:10, 16, 19, 20.

A reference is made in the book, The Acts of the Apostles, 585, that these seven churches are symbolic. “The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era. The number seven indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the world.”

At the time in which John received the vision there were more than these seven churches in Asia, but in His infinite wisdom Christ saw that in these were represented exactly the trials that His people would go through at specific times and would also apply individually to those living in the last days.

The Loveless Church

The first letter was to the church of Ephesus. “Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith He that holdeth the seven stars in His right hand, Who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.” Revelation 2:1–3.

Ephesus means to let go, relax, permit something. The church of Ephesus existed from the years A.D. 31 to A.D. 100. Ephesus was the capital and the most important city in the Roman province of Asia. It was wealthy and within the city could be found theaters, public bathhouses, the public square, paved streets, and many other modern conveniences. It was the major center for commerce, politics and religious importance and as such, it was a promising field for missionary effort. Ephesus was the center for the worship of Artemus, believed to be the Greek goddess of fertility. Many Jews also congregated there. In the book, The Acts of the Apostles, 578, 579, we are told: “At the first the experience of the church at Ephesus was marked with childlike simplicity and fervor. The believers sought earnestly to obey every word of God, and their lives revealed an earnest, sincere love for Christ. They rejoiced to do the will of God because the Saviour was in their hearts as an abiding presence. Filled with love for their Redeemer, their highest aim was to win souls to Him.”

Ephesus was a missionary-minded church. They had found this new love and had a burden that those around them could also experience it. It is well documented that from that center missionaries were sent forth, even as far as Rome, to share the gospel of Jesus and to proclaim His Second Coming to the inhabitants there. But after a while things began to change. The zeal of the believers began to wane and their love for God and for one another grew less. Coldness crept into the church and they no longer made missionary efforts; they no longer engaged in the work and as a result they lost their burden for souls.

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent.” Revelation 2:4, 5.

The Ephesians left their first love, their missionary spirit with a burden to win souls to Christ, and as a result, darkness and coldness crept into the church, its spiritual condition becoming worse until the whole church went through a change.

The Persecuted Church

Smyrna signifies “myrrh,” which being of bitter taste is expressive of the bitter afflictions and persecutions which was the experience of this church. This church represents the time period from around A.D. 100 until A.D. 313 when Christianity was legalized by the Roman Empire. “And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; ‘These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive.’ ” Verse 8. Smyrna was built by Alexander’s general Lysimachus around the third century B.C. It was one of the most prosperous cities of Asia minor. Under the Roman Empire it was famous for its beauty and the magnificence of its public buildings. Verses 9, 10 state: “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

The church of Smyrna encountered much opposition from the Jews and also suffered heavy persecution from the Roman government. Under the emperor Marcus Aurelius, the famous bishop Polycarp was martyred in A.D. 155, his fate being sealed by the flames and sword. Polycarp’s words are insightful into the character of God’s faithful who were persecuted at that time. When asked by the power of Rome to repent and deny Christ, Polycarp replied, “Our minds are not to be changed from the better to the worse, but it is a good thing to be changed from evil to good.” When he was nailed to the stake to be burned Polycarp said, “Let me remain as I am; for He who giveth me strength to sustain the fire, will enable me also, without your securing me with nails, to remain unmoved in the fire.” Pioneer Authors, Cornell, Merritt E, Miraculous Powers, 62.

The Compromising Church

Pergamos was a compromising church. “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is; and thou holdest fast My name, and hast not denied My faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.” Revelation 2:12, 13. Due to its strategic position along the land and the sea, Pergamus enjoyed many centuries of wealth and prosperity. In 133 B.C., Pergamos came under Roman control and it held a religious primacy in the whole province of Asia.

It was a well-known center of religious activities, and it was here that the first temple for emperor worship was built, Satan’s seat. “But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. Repent, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.” Verses 14–16.

Religious pressure by the pagans was very intense against the church of Pergamos. There was also much religious pressure from within. Many of the pagan believers compromised the faith as did Balaam, God’s prophet who apostatized and tried to curse Israel. This took place with the pagan believers because their hearts were not truly converted. These compromises were made with the Roman state, represented as Balak. It was compromise that allowed many false teachings and practices to enter the Christian church. It was at this time that there were many changes in doctrines and practices. The doctrine of eternal burning of the wicked was introduced and the teaching of the Nicolaitans that God’s grace blotted out the law. Serious compromises were made during this time in which the groundwork for the union of church and state was established. This period was approximately from A.D. 313 until 538.

The Corrupt Church

Thyatira means a sweet savor of affliction and this was the church in darkness. “And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, Who hath His eyes like unto a flame of fire, and His feet are like fine brass.” Verse 18.

Thyatira was about twenty-five miles southeast of Pergamum. Thyatira was well-known for its industries. It was famous for garment making, baking, and many other industries. Its citizens were mostly poor humble laborers. “I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess to teach and seduce My servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.” Verses 19, 20.

This was a period of darkness for the church. Jezebel, a woman in Bible prophecy, representing a church, here refers to the apostate church at this time—the Roman system, the Papacy. There was an improvement in Thyatira’s condition, the last being better than the first. The church of Thyatira represents the church of darkness, the church during the Dark Ages, A.D. 538 till around 1517, which is when the council of Trent came to the final decision of separation between the Catholics and Protestants. It was at this time that the Reformers came upon the scene, thus the last of Thyatira’s works were greater than the first.

The Dead Church

“And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.” Revelation 3:1. Sardis represents the church of the Reformers—the Reformation church. Sardis was around 35 miles southeast of Thyatira, and due to its early prosperity, the city became known for its wealth. The fortress of the city was almost impregnable. They had a name that they lived and they were wealthy, very prosperous.

“Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.” Verses 2, 3. In 549 B.C., Cyrus the Mede set out to take Sardis from King Crusos. To reach Sardis meant a climb up a steep and narrow hill, which was heavily fortified. The king of Sardis had no concern when Cyrus came against him believing his fortress was impregnable. However, Cyrus took a route that the king thought to be impassable so was not heavily guarded and entered at an unguarded point and conquered the city.

Almost 330 years later in 214 B.C., Antiochus used the same strategy to conquer Sardis. In other words, they did not learn their lesson the first time and as a result, they fell again. They were not diligent in watching for danger. They did not strengthen the things that remained, so they fell. This, of course, is a perfect symbol of the Protestant Reformation. At its beginning, the Reformers stood boldly for righteousness by faith and understood the principles of the gospel, although there was still more light to shine upon them that they had not yet received.

God was calling His people out of the apostate system of worship and we know many of these Reformers such as Martin Luther who established the church of the Lutherans. There were other Reformers as well: John Huss, Jerome, Zwingli and Wycliffe, who was called the “Morning Star of the Reformation.” The problem with the Protestant churches was that they only went to a certain point and then ceased to protest. They ceased to progress in the light and as a result, the Protestant churches became similar to that which they came out of, the mother church, Babylon.

This is what took place with Sardis in A.D. 1517, which was when the Council of Trent finally settled the fact that Protestants would go one way and Catholics would go another. The Protestant churches flourished until around the middle of the eighteenth century.

The Faithful Church

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith He that is holy, and that is true, He that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth and no man openeth.” Revelation 3:7. Athalas Philadelpus named his brother Philadelpus because his brother was very loyal to him. He also named this city Philadelphia after his brother, meaning brotherly love. Philadelphia is a symbol of the missionary church. It was well-known for its temples and religious festivals. “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept My word, and hast not denied My name.” Verse 8.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a great religious awakening took place worldwide and prominently in America. Missionaries coming out of the Reformation movement went to various places proclaiming the Second Advent message. Here in America, William Miller was the one who led out in the great religious awakening. God used him to preach the near Advent. But, as we know, the believers thought that in 1844 Jesus would return. When Jesus did not return, there was a great disappointment. Their timing was correct, but the event was wrong. It was not the return of Jesus to this earth. Rather it was that Jesus had placed before them an open door, which no man could shut.

In the heavenly courts there is a sanctuary. You can read this specifically in Hebrews chapter 8. The believers came to recognize that in 1844, instead of Jesus’ coming to this earth as they expected, He moved from the Holy Place into the Most Holy Place of that sanctuary. The door therein was opened and the door to the Holy Place was shut.

This was the early Advent movement and the believers were fervent. They had a zeal to preach the great Second Advent. These individuals prayed constantly, confessing their sins, searching their hearts, expecting Jesus to come immediately. And after the disappointment, the majority lost faith; they lost their zeal and love and only a few remained faithful. This was the period of the Philadelphia church, from around the 1750s up to approximately the 1850s.

The Lukewarm Church

And as time went on, the church lost its fervor and zeal and again began to come into another saddened condition. The seventh church, the church of Laodicea, represents this period. “And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.” Revelation 3:14, 15.

Laodicea was about 40 miles southeast of Philadelphia and its strategic position made it a prosperous commercial center. However, Laodicea lacked a supply of good water. “So then because thou are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” Verses 16, 17. Laodicea is a reference to the lukewarm church of God from the days of the 1850s until the end. This Laodicean condition is taking place today, not just in the Protestant world, but within those who profess to be Seventh-day Adventists.

Laodicea means judgment of the people. It is interesting here because in context, Laodicea had a judgment of themselves. And their judgment of themselves was wrong because it says, “You say that you are rich, you say that you are increased with goods, not knowing your true condition.” Their righteousness was self-righteousness, not knowing they were blind, and poor and naked. This era of the Laodicean period is the time in which we are living today.

We take courage that there were some faithful Christians there in the church in the wilderness. In Revelation 2:24 we are told: “But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.”

Remember, the church at Thyatira represented the church of the Dark Ages, the time in which the papacy was reigning at its utmost. The darkness for which the period was known had its beginning in the church. But here we see that there were some in Thyatira who had not these doctrines being promoted to the church by the Nicolaitans. This is the period of time spoken of in the prophecy in Revelation 12:6 and 14: “And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. … And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.” Here the woman represented the true church of God that went into the wilderness during this dark period of one thousand two hundred sixty days, which represents, according to Bible prophecy, one thousand two hundred and sixty years: the church in the wilderness.

Many of God’s people still resisted the darkness. The Albigenses of France and the Waldenses, who originated in the valley of Piedmont in north Italy, the very land where the darkness was thickest, were among the groups that resisted the darkness. This group of people had to flee out into the mountains and caves because of persecution by the apostate church. Although they were in mountains and caves, yet they maintained the true faith. The few copies of the Bible they had were so precious to them that they copied them by hand to have more. They would go out as missionaries in the marketplaces and carefully share their faith with others at the risk of their lives.

A papal bull of Pope Innocent the 8th in 1487 really began a fierce persecution against God’s faithful people at that time. The bull said in part: “… absolved from all ecclesiastical pains and penalties general and particular those who join it along. …” It released, “all who joined the crusade from any oaths they may have taken.” It “… legitimized their title to any property they may have illegally acquired and promised remission of all their sins to such as should kill any heretic.” It “… annulled all contracts made in favor of Waldenses.” It “… ordered their domestics to abandon them, forbade all persons to give them any aid whatever, and empowered all persons to take possession of their property.” The Great Controversy, 77.

As the church in the wilderness, God’s people endured suffering, affliction and were hunted as wild beasts. Many of them were martyred for their faith, thrown to wild beasts to devour them, burned at the stake, hung up-side-down and tortured beyond our imagination. This was the experience of God’s people.

These lessons are instructive for us today. We know, according to prophecy, that the time will come in the last days for the people of God to endure troublesome times beyond that which we have ever imagined. In II Timothy 3:12, the apostle Paul says concerning all those who believe, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

I have asked myself, “Where then is that persecution?” Sure, we may have experienced a little persecution here and there, but it has been a drop in the bucket in comparison to the great ocean with which God’s people have been drenched in the past.

A well-known quotation from The Great Controversy, 48, says, “Why is it, then, that persecution seems in a great degree to slumber? The only reason is that the church has conformed to the world’s standard and therefore awakens no opposition. The religion which is current in our day is not of the pure and holy character that marked the Christian faith in the days of Christ and His apostles. It is only because of the spirit of compromise with sin, because the great truths of the word of God are so indifferently regarded, because there is little vital godliness in the church, that Christianity is apparently so popular with the world. Let there be a revival of the faith and power of the early church and the spirit of persecution will be revived and the fires of persecution will be rekindled.”

Are you prepared to endure hardship and persecution? Can you endure the trials you may face right now? Often times we talk about the time of trouble that is to come, but we weep, and complain, and murmur over little hardships that we may have today. Many do not want to sacrifice for the cause of Christ but are comfortable just attending church every Sabbath to listen to the messages preached from the pulpit. We should be searching our own hearts, pleading for God to infuse us with His word, that we too may have a word to give in due season to those that are weary (Proverbs 15:23). Many have lost that missionary spirit, and have become as patients who come to church sick, perhaps receiving a bandaid, and maybe even being healed, but in turn, not wanting to aid in the healing of someone else.

There are many opportunities available to serve in the cause of Christ. Many offices need to be filled, but where are the workers? Where are those who are consecrated? Too many people are more concerned about our own business and their own houses, rather than the things that are of Jesus Christ.

James 1:3, 4 says, “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” Here is the patience of the saints. We are told to let patience have her perfect work (James 1:4). Let God work it out. Bear the responsibilities that He has granted. In fact, we are even called to choose the hard instead of the easy, but how often we choose the easy way.

The Waldensians endured far more persecution than we have thus far, and they recognized the blessings that this persecution brought. Yet in our Laodicean condition, thinking that we are rich, increased with goods, and have need of nothing, we know not our true condition, that we are wretched, poor, blind, miserable and naked (Revelation 3:17). Perhaps not until we experience the degree of persecution that the Waldensians did will we recognize our true state and the blessings that persecution brings.

When we undertake the work that has been so clearly laid out before us by our Saviour, there are likely to be two consequences, perhaps occurring concurrently, as they often go hand in hand. One, we may well suffer persecution, just as the Waldensians did, though initially not as severe as they ultimately did. That comes very near the meeting of time and eternity. But second, once we begin that heart-work in the vineyard, we will begin to develop the character of Christ.

“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 69. If we are going to have the character of Christ reproduced in us, something is essential. “God could have reached His object in saving sinners without our aid; but in order for us to develop a character like Christ’s, we must share in His work. In order to enter into His joy—the joy of seeing souls redeemed by His sacrifice—we must participate in His labors for their redemption.” The Desire of Ages, 142.

It is well time to recognize the gifts and talents that God has given you, or you will be like that wicked, unprofitable servant who shall be cast into the lake of fire.

In Jude 3 we are given this exhortation: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend [fight] for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

Fredrick Faber was a nineteenth century priest for the Church of England who later sadly joined the Roman church. But among Faber’s interests were the lives of the saints and he wrote a hymn that acknowledges the legacy of the martyrs in England. In this famous hymn published in 1849, occur the following words:

“Faith of our fathers, living still,
In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy,
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith,
We will be true to Thee till death.”

Are You Ready?

Do you believe that we are living in what the Bible describes as the last epochal period of earth’s history, the last days, or do you think time will continue in its present condition?

The Jewish leaders once came to Jesus asking that He show them a sign, something they continually asked for that they might know whether they could believe Him.

“Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, ‘When it is evening you say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is red”; and in the morning, “It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.” Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.’ ” Matthew 16:1–3.

Jesus reproved the religious leaders of His day, because they knew a lot about predicting weather for the next day, but they didn’t know how to tell the signs of the times. They missed the signs that told of certain prophecies in the Old Testament that were being fulfilled right before their eyes. There are approximately 60 different prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the Messiah, His mission, and what He would do when He came. For centuries they had all of that information, but they did not recognize that prophecy was being fulfilled right in front of them.

In the same way now, there are many prophecies in both the Old and the New Testaments concerning the events leading up to the second coming of the Messiah, which have been and are being fulfilled. Yet they go by unnoticed by the majority. Do you believe we are living in the last days? How can we know?

In the books of Daniel and Revelation we are told that after the coming of the Messiah, there was to be a great time of persecution that would last for 1,260 years. At the end of that period of time, the world would enter the last epochal period of earth’s history, called the time of the end or the last days.

We are told in Daniel 7:25: “He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, shall persecute the saints of the Most High, and shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time, and times, and half a time.”

A close look at the context of Daniel 11:30–35 clearly reveals that this period occurs after the coming of the Messiah. It says, “He shall return and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame [they shall be burned at the stake], by captivity [put in dungeons] and plundering. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.”

Notice, this prophecy says, very distinctly, that there would be a long period of persecution against God’s children, and when that time ends, the world would enter “the time of the end.” Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 24. And John corroborated it in the book of Revelation when he recorded, “Leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city [God’s church] underfoot for forty-two months.” Revelation 11:2.

God’s true and faithful people were to endure terrible persecution for 42 months, or for 1,260 days, or 3½ years, as we read in Daniel 7:25. Then in Revelation 11:3, it says, “And I will give power to My two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

We find the same persecuting period mentioned in Revelation 12:6: “Then the woman [the church] fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days.”

And again, in Revelation 13:5–8, talking about the anti-christ persecuting the true church, it says, “He was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.”

These prophecies have been fulfilled. It has been estimated that during the Dark Ages over 50,000,000 Bible believing Christians were martyred because of their faith in Christ. But Jesus said that toward the close of this period of the tribulation or persecution of Bible Christians that certain signs would appear in the heavens. He said, “In those days [the days of the tribulation or the persecution], after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light.” Mark 13:24.

In Matthew 24:29, 30 we read another record of the same prediction by Jesus. “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

Those events have happened. On May 19, 1780, there was an unexplained dark day and in November 1833, the greatest meteor shower that has ever been recorded occurred. These events can be verified by an encyclopedia or Internet search.

When we look at history and follow it right up to the present time, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have been living in that period of earth’s history that the Bible calls “the time of the end” or “the last days” for approximately 200 years. We are living in that period of time during which Daniel predicted the Lord of heaven is going to come back to this world and set up His kingdom. (See Daniel 2 and 7.) There are certain events that are to happen before Christ returns.

Daniel 12:4: “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Two things are going to happen in the time of the end, according to this verse. Many will go to and fro. There will be much traveling in the time of the end. Today, there is more travel than in any previous time in earth’s history. A few hundred years ago, even just 250 years ago, the only people who traveled much were explorers, soldiers, sailors, or people who emigrated to some new part of the world. The average person then lived and died within a few miles of his or her birthplace. But today, at any international airport you will see people from all over the world, coming and going by the thousands. It was not that way even 150 years ago.

In the time of the end, “knowledge would increase.” Today, we live in the time of an information explosion. History reveals that this information explosion in technology and science got started about 200 years ago, in direct fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

Not all the things the Bible predicted for the last days are so wonderful. Jesus said, “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Matthew 24:37–39.

Noah preached for 120 years that a flood was coming but the world did not believe it. Jesus said that the same condition that existed prior to the Flood will prevail just before His return, but most will not believe. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14. Most people will not know what is coming. They will not know the signs.

There are millions of people today who boast that they do not believe in the Bible or in Bible prophecy. Nevertheless, Bible prophecy has an infallible way of being fulfilled right to the letter.

“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5. Every thought was evil continually; it was a time of great wickedness. One needs only to pick up a newspaper to see that today we are also living in a time of great wickedness. Jesus said this would be the condition right before He would come again. “The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.” Verse 11. Does that sound familiar?

Referring to the same subject in Luke 17:28–30: “Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”

Jesus said it will be just as it was in the days of Lot. They did not know that that was their last night on earth. The end came suddenly. So it will be when the Son of man is revealed. Life will go on day after day after day, and then suddenly, the Lord will return and people will not be ready.

In Ezekiel 16:48, 49 the prophet tells why Sodom was destroyed. “ ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done. Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.’ ”

According to the apostle Paul, there will be great social problems in the world in the last days. He wrote to Timothy, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people, turn away!” II Timothy 3:1–5.

There will be lots of religion in the last days. There will be a form of godliness, but people will deny its power. The power of godliness is the power that is given to the Christian to follow Jesus in obedience, to live a righteous and holy life. “But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” Romans 6:17–22.

There will be many professed Christians in the last days with a form of godliness, but denying its power and manifesting all the social problems that the apostle Paul listed.

In the last days, there will be great natural disasters. In Luke 21:11 it says, “There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines, and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” And in verse 25, Jesus said, “There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring.”

At the same time in the last days there will be a great international religious peace movement. This is very fascinating to study because there is no record in history of such a thing occurring, unless perhaps it happened in the days of Noah. But the prophets do predict clearly that there will be an international religious peace movement in the last days.

Isaiah tells about it in Isaiah 2:2–4. He says, “It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall rebuke many people; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” There is a similar prophecy in Micah 4:1–6. For a little over a 100 years, we have said that we are going to outlaw war. We have established an international court to rule on matters so that we will not have war anymore.

The Bible predicts that at the very time that there is this great international religious peace movement, there will be the greatest wars of all time. In Joel 3:9–14 it says just the opposite of what the people say. The Lord says, “Proclaim this among the nations: ‘Prepare for war! Wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near, let them come up. Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am strong.” Assemble and come, all you nations, and gather together all around. Cause Your mighty ones to go down there, O Lord. “Let the nations be wakened and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, go down; for the winepress is full, the vats overflow—for their wickedness is great.” Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.’ ”

These texts describe exactly the way the world is today. There are multitudes trying to figure out on which side of the great controversy they want to be. They are in the valley of decision, but there is not a lot of time for them to decide because the Day of the Lord is near.

We see in Joel 3 that Bible prophecy has a way of turning out to be accurate every time. In II Peter 3, the apostle predicted that in the last days there would be a time of great unbelief. People would not believe that the world was created by a divine Intelligence. In II Peter 3:3–5 we are told: “Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water.” They willfully forget, not wanting to remember that this world was created by the word of God. That is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

We are living in a time when there is the accumulation of great wealth in the world and at the same time the most abject worldwide poverty. This is also a fulfillment of Bible prophecy. James predicted that there would be oppression of the poor by the rich. He said, “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.” James 5:1–6.

When people are not ready and are not looking for it, the end will come. Jesus said, “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Matthew 24:44. It is going to happen friends. Most of the world won’t be ready, but what about you? Are you ready?
