Food for Life – Recipe for Rice Croquettes

The other day I came across a most thought provoking statement on page 186 of the book Counsels on Health. It says, “It is a terrible sin to abuse the health that God has given us; for every abuse of health enfeebles us for life, and makes us losers.” This is a very serious word from our God and we do well to ponder carefully its very essence to see how many things in our lives need changing.

What about excessive indulgence in sleeping? Does that concern you? Or is there anybody you know who falls into this category? It certainly does not touch this household in any way. Both of us were brought up to be early risers. But there are those whom it touches very directly. We find among the guilty ones, people who are addicted to novel reading late into the night; or TV viewers who have to watch the late night show, or some other ridiculous thing. To say nothing of the night sports or gatherings for pleasure to which some are addicted. God says that it is best for us to retire early and arise early…the benefits are very rewarding, both to our minds and for our overall health.

On the other hand, it is most important that we get a regular amount of rest to help us mentally and physically. I suppose each person varies slightly in the amount of sleep they require, but make sure that you do not injure this wonderful body God has given you with any deficiency in this line. Let us remember that there is a criterion for us all to follow while we prepare for a night’s rest…proper ventilation, both summer and winter. “Many families suffer with sore throat and lung diseases, and liver complaints, brought upon them by their own course of action. Their sleeping rooms are small, unfit to sleep in for one night, but they occupy small apartments for weeks and months, and years. They keep their windows and doors closed, fearing they would take cold if there was a crevice open to let in the air. They breathe the same air over and over, until it becomes impregnated with the poisonous impurities, and waste matter, thrown off from their bodies, through the lungs, and the pores of the skin. Such can test the matter, and be convinced of the unhealthy air in their close rooms, by entering them after they have remained a while in the open air. Then they have some idea of the impurities they have conveyed to the blood through the inhalations of the lungs. Those who thus abuse their health must suffer with disease. All should regard light and air as among heaven’s most precious blessings. They should not shut out these blessings as though they were enemies.” Selected Messages, vol. 2, 462, 463.

Ponder this heaven sent advice well, especially while we are in the winter months! You will find that you will not have the colds you were accustomed to in the past. Your mind will be sharper and clearer than it has ever been! Oh trust the Lord, and see what He will do for you as you follow His divine guidance! Happy Holidays!

Happy New Year! “Thousands of dollars will be worse than thrown away upon the coming… New Year in needless indulgences. But it is our privilege to depart from the customs and practices of this degenerate age; and instead of expending means merely for the gratification of the appetite or for needless ornaments or articles of clothing, we may make the coming holidays an occasion in which to honor and glorify God.” The Adventist Home, 480.

“…New Year celebrations can and should be held in behalf of those who are helpless. God is glorified when we give to help those who have large families to support.” Ibid., 482.

“Angels of God are waiting to show you the path of life.… Decide now, at the commencement of the New Year, that you will choose the path of righteousness, that you will be earnest and true-hearted, and that life with you shall not prove a mistake. Go forward, guided by the heavenly angels; be courageous; be enterprising; let your light shine; and may the words of inspiration be applicable to you— “I write unto you, young men [and women], because you are strong and have overcome the wicked one.” My Life Today, 5.

“The observance of temperance and regularity in ALL things has a wonderful power. It will do more than circumstances or natural endowments in promoting that sweetness and serenity of disposition which count so much in smoothing life’s pathway. At the same time the power of self–control thus acquired will be found one of the most valuable equipments for grappling successfully with the stern duties and realities that await every human being.

“We urge that the principles of temperance be carried into ALL the details of home life;…that self-denial and self-control should be taught to the children, and ENFORCED upon them, so far as consistent, from BABYHOOD.

“Children should be taught that they must not have their own way, but that the will of their parents must guide them. One of the MOST important lessons in this connection is the control of appetite. They should learn to eat at regular periods and to allow NOTHING to pass their lips between these stated meals.…

“Children reared in this way are much more easily controlled than those who are indulged in eating everything their appetite craves, and at all times. They are usually cheerful, contented, and healthy. Even the most stubborn, passionate, and wayward have become submissive, patient, and possessed of self-control by persistently following up this order of diet, united with a firm but kind management in regard to other matters.” My Life Today, 82. [Emphasis added.]

“God would have every household and every church exert a winning power to draw the children away from the seducing pleasures of the world and from association with those whose influence would have a corrupting tendency. Study to win the youth to Jesus.” The Adventist Home, 504, 505.

Again, let me wish each and every one of you the most blessed New Year, and God bless you!

“If February gives much snow,
a fine summer it doth foreshow.”
English Rhyme.

This year we will be looking through “Counsels on Health” to see if we can keep our hearts tuned to the divine blueprint.

“When Christ first saw the multitudes that gathered about Him, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted and were scattered abroad as sheep having no shepherd. Christ saw the sickness, the sorrow, the want and degradation of the multitudes that thronged His steps. To Him were presented the needs and woes of humanity throughout the world. Among the high and the low, the most honored and the most degraded, he beheld souls who were longing for the very blessing He had come to bring; souls who needed only a knowledge of His grace to become subjects of His kingdom.

“Today, the same needs exist. The world is in need of workers who will labor as Christ did for the suffering and the sinful. There is indeed a multitude to be reached. The world is full of sickness, suffering, distress, and sin. It is full of those who need to be ministered unto…the weak, the helpless, the ignorant, the degraded.

“Many of the youth of this generation, in the midst of churches, religious institutions, and professedly Christian homes, are choosing the path to destruction. Through intemperate habits they bring upon themselves disease, and through greed to obtain money for sinful indulgences they fall into dishonest practices. Health and character are ruined. Aliens from God, and outcasts from society, these poor souls feel that they are without hope either for this life or for the life to come. The hearts of parents are broken. Men speak of these erring ones as hopeless; but God looks upon them with pitying tenderness. He understands all the circumstances that have led them to fall under temptation. This is a class that demands labor.

“Nigh and afar off are souls, not only the youth, but those of all ages, who are in poverty and distress, sunken in sin, and weighted down with a sense of guilt. It is the work of God’s servants to seek for these souls, to pray with them and for them, and lead them step by step to the Saviour.

“But those who do not recognize the claims of God are not the only ones who are in distress and in need of help. In the world today, where selfishness, greed, and oppression rules, many of the Lord’s true children are in need and affliction. In lowly, miserable places, surrounded with poverty, disease, and guilt, many are patient bearing their own burden of suffering, and trying to comfort the hopeless and sin-stricken about hem. Many of them are almost unknown to the churches or to the ministers; but they are the Lord’s lights, shining amid the darkness.” Counsels on Health, 13, 14.

“The present enfeebled condition of the human family was presented before me. Every generation has been growing weaker, and disease of every form afflicts the race. Thousands of poor mortals with deformed, sickly bodies, shattered nerves, and gloomy minds are dragging out a miserable existence. Satan’s power upon the human family increases. If the Lord should not soon come and destroy his power, the earth would erelong be depopulated.

“I was shown that Satan’s power is especially exercised upon the people of God. Many were presented before me in a doubting despairing condition. The infirmities of the body affect the mind. A cunning and powerful enemy attends our steps, and employs his strength and skill in trying to turn us out of the right way. And it is too often the case that the people of God are not on their watch, therefore are ignorant of his devices. He works by means which will best conceal himself from view, and he often gains his object.

“Man came from the hand of his Creator perfect in organization and beautiful in form. The fact that he has for six thousand years withstood the ever-increasing weight of disease and crime is conclusive proof of the power of endurance with which he was first endowed. And although the antediluvians generally gave themselves up to sin without restraint, it was more than two thousand years before the violation of natural law was sensibly felt. Had Adam originally possessed no greater physical power than men now have, the race would ere this have become extinct.

“Through the successive generations since the Fall, the tendency has been continually downward. Disease has been transmitted from parents to children, generation after generation. Even infants in the cradle suffer from afflictions caused by the sins of their parents.…

“The violation of physical law, with its consequent suffering and premature death, has so long prevailed that these results are regarded as the appointed lot of humanity; but God did not create the race in such a feeble condition. This state of things is not the work of Providence, but of man. It has been brought about by wrong habits—by violating the laws that God has made to govern man’s existence. A continual transgression of nature’s laws is a continual transgression of the law of God. Had men always been obedient to the law of the Ten Commandments, carrying out in their lives the principles of those precepts, the curse of disease now flooding the world would not exist.

“When men take any course which needlessly expends their vitality or beclouds their intellect, they sin against God; they do not glorify Him in their body and spirit, which are His. Yet despite the insult which man has offered Him, God’s love is still extended to the race, and He permits light to shine, enabling man to see that in order to live a perfect life he must obey the natural laws which govern his being. How important, then, that man should walk in this light, exercising all his powers, both of body and mind, to the glory of God!” Counsels on Health, 18–20.

So many have asked about Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), that I thought I would tell you this month exactly what I think it is, and why we should not use it.

From “Consumer Beware,” authored by Beatrice Trum Hunter, we learn that MSG has had a long history of use in food preparation and serving in the Orient. Extracted from seaweed or soybean, it was used to impart a meaty flavor to dishes in which meat, scarce or costly, was used sparingly.

“The composition of the MSG now added to more than 10,000 different processed food items in America differs from the Oriental product. It is manufactured from wheat or corn gluten or from sugar-beet byproducts. At present, more than 40 million pounds of MSG are sold annually to add to American foodstuffs. When first introduced, it was put in canned soups. By now, it is virtually impossible to avoid MSG in processed foods. MSG is found commonly in heat-and-serve convenience foods, meats, stews, and meat tenderizers; canned and frozen vegetables; seafoods, fish fillets, clam chowder, codfish cakes, and canned tuna; poultry and chicken á la King; almost all canned soups and soup mixes, seasonings, mayonnaise, French dressing, salad dressing, imitation maple syrup, potato chips, crackers and tobacco.

“Nutritionist Dr. Jean Mayer claimed that MSG was added to baby foods ‘to disguise the fact that there was less meat and more starch’ in those products than formerly. He added, ‘The MSG was a risk added to a disadvantage.’ MSG was also added to some vegetable and meat mixtures of commercially processed baby foods to make them more palatable to mothers who sampled them. Experimental evidence raised doubts about the safety of this additive in baby foods, and pending further study, in October 1969 some processors voluntarily stopped adding it to their baby-food products.

“Federal legislation specifically prohibits the addition of any material to food which causes ‘damage or inferiority’ to be concealed in any manner or which can make a food appear better or of greater value than it is. This prohibition is precise and without qualifications. Nonetheless, FDA permits wide latitude in the use of MSG, a substance which helps disguise inferior food quality.

“MSG has been glamorized for the general public as a ‘flavor enhancer’ which brings out the natural flavor of food. Three of MSG’s components—namely wheat, corn and sugar beet byproducts—are common allergens. For those who need to limit or eliminate these substances from their diets, the widespread use of MSG makes this extremely difficult. EVEN A CAREFUL READING OF LABELS WILL NOT HELP. For instance, although the addition of MSG must appear in the ingredients of all canned vegetables, THIS SUBTANCE MAY BE ADDED TO MAYONNAISE, FRENCH DRESSING, AND SALAD DRESSING WITHOUT LABEL DECLARATION.

“Since MSG’s use is sanctioned by federal regulation, it might be assumed that the safety of this material is well established. This is NOT the case. As early as 1955, Consumers’ Research Bulletin printed a report of a physician, who had traced a serious allergy affecting a woman and her son to MSG. Within a half-hour after eating meals of excellent food prepared at home, as well as meals eaten at fine restaurants, they developed acute distress resembling gall-bladder trouble. Their symptoms included epigastric fullness, belching, distention and marked upper-abdominal discomfort. The reactions were traced to MSG.”

We will continue with this study next month. Until then, God be with you, and remember to READ YOUR LABELS!

God requires of His people continual advancement. We need to learn that indulged appetite is the greatest hindrance to mental improvement and soul sanctification. With all our profession of health reform, many of us eat improperly.” Testimonies, vol. 9, 156. “We should not provide for the Sabbath a more liberal supply or a greater variety of food than for other days. Instead of this, the food should be more simple, and less should be eaten, in order that the mind may be clear and vigorous to comprehend spiritual things. A clogged stomach means a clogged brain. The most precious words may be heard and not appreciated, because the mind is confused by an improper diet. By overeating on the Sabbath, many do more than they think, to unfit themselves for receiving the benefit of its sacred opportunities.” The Ministry of Healing, 307.

“Children should be educated to habits of temperance, even while in their mother’s arms. Our tables should bear only the most wholesome food, free from every irritating substance. The appetite for liquor is encouraged by the preparation of food with condiments and spices. These cause a feverish state of the system, and drink is demanded to allay the irritation. On my frequent journeys across the continent, I do not patronize restaurants, dining-cars, or hotels, for the simple reason that I cannot eat the food there provided. The dishes are highly seasoned with salt and pepper, creating an almost intolerable thirst. During my last trip, the conductor of the sleeping-car kindly brought me a plate of rich vegetable soup. I tasted the apparently inviting dish, but found it so highly seasoned that I dared not eat it. The salt and pepper made my mouth smart, and I well knew that they would irritate and inflame the delicate coating of the stomach. I passed the tempting dish to another; for I dared not place such an abuse upon my digestive organs.” Review and Herald, November 6, 1883.

Withstanding Temptation

A few potent thoughts for this month from the little book “Confrontation” beginning with page 10: “Adam and Eve came forth from the hand of their Creator in the perfection of every physical, mental, and spiritual endowment. God planted for them a garden, and surrounded them with everything that was lovely and attractive to the eye, which their physical necessities required. This holy pair looked upon a world of unsurpassed loveliness and glory. A benevolent Creator had given them evidences of His goodness and love in providing them with fruits, vegetables, and grains, and in causing to grow out of the ground every variety of tree for usefulness and beauty.” [Emphasis supplied.]

Has the cost of your salvation ever entered your mind? “Satan followed Him [Christ] from infancy to childhood and from childhood to manhood, inventing means and ways to allure Him from His allegiance to God, and overcome Him with his subtle temptations. The unsullied purity of the childhood, youth, and manhood of Christ, which Satan could not taint, annoyed him exceedingly. All his darts and arrows of temptation fell harmless before the Son of God. And when he found that all his temptations prevailed nothing in moving Christ from the steadfast integrity, or in marring the spotless purity of the youthful Galilean, he was perplexed and enraged. He looked upon this youth as an enemy that he must dread and fear.

“That there should be One who walked the earth with moral power to withstand all his temptations, who resisted all his attractive bribes to allure Him to sin, and over whom he could obtain no advantage to separate from God, chafed and enraged his satanic majesty.” Ibid., 28.

Have you ever considered how much He endured for your sake and for mine? Look at our sins, the ones that so easily beset us—the common, little ordinary sins that will keep us out of Heaven unless we overcome them completely— like impatience, a harsh tongue, and gossiping. Even the smallest will bar our way to the mansions He has gone to prepare for us.

“When Christ bore the test of temptation upon the point of appetite, He did not stand in beautiful Eden, as did Adam, with the light and love of God seen in everything His eye rested upon; but He was in a barren, desolate wilderness, surrounded with wild beasts. Everything around Him was repulsive. With these surroundings, He fasted forty days and forty nights.” Ibid., 37.

“For forty days He ate and drank nothing. This made His suffering greater than anything which man would ever be called to endure.” Signs of the Times, August 7, 1879.

In light of the shortness of time, does this not behoove us to watch more carefully everything we do and say, that we might give all the glory and honor to Him alone? Let us pray for one another that we will remain faithful until Jesus comes.

Eggplant

for the Skin and Hair

Eggplant, also known as Brinjal or Aubergine, belongs to the nightshade family. Botanically, eggplant is a fruit and not a vegetable, native to India.

Eggplant is known to be rich in a variety of vitamins, minerals and other healthy enzymes that are good for our health. Phytonutrients present in eggplant enhance the functioning of the brain, its high vitamin C content gives antibacterial support and its high fiber content maintains a low blood-sugar level for diabetes patients. Apart from these health benefits, the consumption and application of eggplant have a number of skin and hair benefits.

Eggplant juice works wonders as a natural skin toner and maintains and improves firmness of the skin and also helps to get rid of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, etc. Take fresh eggplant juice and add a little witch hazel to it. Store in the refrigerator and use as a toner for soft and smooth skin.

Eggplant also has a very important ingredient called Chlorogenic acid in it which can reduce the risk of skin cancer. It protects our DNA from mutation and has antibacterial and antiviral properties which protect the body.

Eggplant is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help in maintaining the natural shine, luster and health of the hair. Eggplant has a number of healthy enzymes, which make hair follicles strong and thus promotes the natural growth of hair. Application of eggplant juice on one’s hair can do wonders for maintaining moisture content and softening the brittle locks. This can be simply achieved by using eggplant juice for rinsing the hair regularly and see your hair shine.

James Thomson

I have had numerous requests to continue my article on the harm of MSG. This information is taken from Consumer Beware, by Beatrice Trum Hunter, page 62.

“More recently, additional information has been publicized. Dr. Robert Ho Man Kwok, senior research investigator for the National Biomedical Research Foundation, describing a strange syndrome that he personally experiences in restaurants serving Northern Chinese Food. About 15 to 20 minutes after eating, he develops ‘numbness at the back of the neck, gradually radiating to both arms and the back, general weakness and palpitation.’ Dr. Kwok added that some of his Chinese friends, both medical and nonmedical, also complained of similar symptoms after eating Chinese food. He speculated that it might be caused by some ingredient in the soy sauce, the high sodium content of the food, and/or the generous use of monosodium glutamate seasoning used in many Chinese restaurants.

“Dr. Kwok’s description elicited other reports of what came to be dubbed the ‘Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.’ (CRS). Many physicians confirmed similar experiences. In addition to the symptoms Dr. Kwok described, some included ‘profuse, cold sweat,’ ‘tightness on both sides of the head. . . . felt as though, at any second, the sides of my head would burst.’ ‘Pounding, throbbing sensation in the head, vise-like.’

“Interest in the subject continued. Medical researchers followed up the lead. Dr. Herbert H. Schaumburg, assistant professor of neurology, and Dr. Robert Byck, assistant professor of pharmacology, both at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, found MSG related to the CRS symptoms. They acknowledged that the syndrome has been well known to allergists and Chinese restaurateurs.

“The researchers ate Chinese food three times daily at a cooperating Chinese restaurant. . . . Upon sampling the individual ingredients, ‘the dagger of suspicion pointed at Monosodium Glutamate.’ The researchers found that as little as 1–1/2 grams, or about one-quarter of a teaspoon, of MSG can produce symptoms in some subjects. They also found that MSG ‘can produce undesirable effects in the amounts used in the preparation of widely consumed foods.’

“To determine whether MSG causes more than transitory symptoms, laboratory experiments were conducted, and large amounts were injected into animals. It caused brain damage in newborn mice. As adults, the MSG-treated animals showed stunted skeletal development, marked obesity and female sterility. The researcher, Dr. John W. Olney, of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, [Missouri] said that he believed that pregnant women should not use MSG, until further data are available.

“As a result, the FDA announced its intention of reviewing MSG, which has been on the GRAS (generally regarded as safe). It should never have been put on that list, since it was already known and reported in a medical journal that MSG had caused eye damage in newborn mice.”

This should answer many of your questions, and hopefully you will eliminate MSG from your diet. God bless you throughout this month, and may you continue to strive for mastery in all these health items for the perfection of your character in Christ Jesus.
