Will Thou Be Made Whole? Part I

One concept that is essential to the principles of health is the intimate relationship between the spiritual and the physical. Those who are in medical missionary work need to understand this.

Owner’s Manual

The Bible is the greatest medical book that has ever been written. “Know ye that the Lord he is God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3. There are two schools of thought in this world upon which hinge all other philosophies, thinking, and modalities—either creation or evolution. We believe that there is a Creator God. At the same time, since we believe that God is the author, the manufacturer, the producer, and the inventor of this fearfully and wonderfully made body of ours, then we realize also that He has given us an owner’s manual.

Every automobile that comes off the industrial line contains an owner’s manual. Would you think it logical for the Ford manufacturers to ask General Electric to produce the owner’s manuals for their automobiles? No, because General Electric did not make the product. The one who made the product is more knowledgeable about the product than anyone else. So if your car broke down, you would not consult General Electric. The same logic applies with the body. Since God made the body, He knows more about the body than anyone on the face of the earth. Those with whom He entrusted gifts of ministry should get their direction from Him.

Do you trust the preacher or anyone else with your salvation? No. So why should you trust anyone else with your health? Even though God raises up men and women to preach, to do Bible work, and to work in the medical field, He has not given them authority, absolute power, over you. We have a personal responsibility for our own lives. God has given us an owner’s manual. Its purpose is to give us instruction on how to operate the product—even how to troubleshoot the product if something happens.

Read the Instructions

Before I became a Christian, the hardest thing I had ever done was learning how to dribble a basketball. I did not know how to use a hammer; I thought beans grew in a can, until God thrust me into this work, out in the country. Then I told my wife that we were going to build a house. She looked at me like I was crazy, because we had never done anything like that before.

Once we built our house, I began to learn a little bit about electricity. I did not know too much, but I began to install some electrical apparatus. This particular product had an instruction sheet with numbered steps. I assumed that I knew how to put a red wire with a red wire, so I saw no need to read the instructions. I thought I did not have time to go through all of the fine print, and that I was intelligent enough to put it together, until I began to blow out circuit breakers and so forth. There is an old saying, “When all else fails, read the instructions.”

We have tried everything else, except God. God has given us an owner’s manual, and in that manual He has given us some very basic instructions. “Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.” Psalm 119:73. It is one thing to have knowledge, but we also need understanding—the ability to apply what we know. Sometimes we get a lot of knowledge, but we become spiritually constipated. We get overloaded, and we are not able to share that which we have received. Once we get knowledge, we need to learn how to make the right application of that which we have received. If we do not do that, it is all wasted.

God has given us principles, laws, and with those He wants to give us understanding. These principles are trust, air, exercise, sunshine, rest, water, temperance, and nutrition. All of these anyone in this world can afford. They are so simple that we do not see their impact. In my 25 years as a medical missionary, these principles have been all that I use.

As Thy Soul Prospereth

There is a favorite text of many Christians that is quite significant. It says, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” 111 John 2. Notice the phrase, “even as.” What does that mean? It means to the same extent, proportionate. That text tells us that, as we grow spiritually, our physical awareness and willingness to preserve the integrity of these bodies will develop proportionately. No one who walks in the Christian life and grows in grace will neglect the house that God built for the dwelling of His Holy Spirit. If we say we are spiritual yet we are not conscious of our health and the house in which we live, then there is something wrong with our spirituality. This text tells us that, as we learn to know God, we will become more conscientious about our bodies. Health is not an option; it is an integral part of our walk with Jesus. Keeping the Sabbath, eating the right things, drinking the right things, or wearing the right clothes will not save us, but these are evidences of our love for Jesus, of our relationship with God. If anyone says that health is just a matter of fact, something is wrong with his or her spiritual barometer!

Mental, Spiritual, Physical

You cannot separate the gospel from the health message. No ministry or church can be successful without the health message. The health message does not take the place of the gospel. It is the very means by which the gospel finds entrance into the heart. God wants us to become awakened to this health message. The Bible tells us that since we grow spiritually and our health grows proportionately, then we need to know what God wants us to be like.

God took dirt, and He exalted that dirt by making it into His image. From that dirt He formed a man into a specimen of Himself. We are nothing but dirt, but we have been exalted by God’s grace. With the molecules and the atoms that God placed into the earth, He constructed a house. “And the Lord God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7. Man is made up of three aspects: mental, spiritual, and physical. The social and emotional are inclusive in those three aspects.

Made Whole

Do you want to be made whole? That sounds very inviting. The Bible says, “There was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep [market] a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?” John 5:1–6.

What does it mean to be made whole? The Bible answers that question: “[Jesus] saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Mark 2:17. Wholeness is the very opposite of being sick. This wholeness not only involves the physical aspect, but the spiritual, because Jesus is associating repentance with wholeness. Most medical missionaries focus primarily on the physical, but no one can be physically well unless they realize what Jesus is saying in Mark and in Deuteronomy 6:5: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart [that is mental], and with all thy soul [that is spiritual], and with all thy might [that is physical].” Again the Bible validates that man is physical, mental, and spiritual.

We can define whole as being complete, entire, and total. The word salvation means to save—to preserve from destruction, to heal. “That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.” Psalm 67:2. To heal, to make whole—Christ came to restore the whole person.

The Blueprint

There is a wonderful book that transformed my life 25 years ago, before I even knew who wrote it. Some of you are familiar with the book—it is called The Ministry of Healing. Another title for it is Health and Happiness. If you do not have the book, please get it. If you have it, blow the dust off of it and read and study it. It is the blueprint. Inspiration says that that book contains the wisdom of the Great Physician. (See Testimonies, vol. 9, 71.) On the very first page of the very first chapter in that book, we are given our example. Christ came to restore the whole man, to bring him health, to bring him peace, and to bring him a moral regeneration. Christ came to restore the whole person.

Whole or Holistic

“They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.” Matthew 9:12. Again Jesus raises the question, wilt thou be made whole? True health is wholeness. The New Age community uses the word wholeness too—they say holistic. The devil does not come up with anything original; he always counterfeits. He speaks enough truth mixed with his error to make it all error. In the New Age philosophy, we find that they believe man is a unity, that he is departmentalized—his spirit is over here, his mind is over there, and his body is somewhere else. God says man is not a unity, man is a unit; he is complete.

If the world has mental problems, they consult a psychiatrist. When a person is physically sick, they see a physician. When they have a spiritual problem, they go to a preacher for counsel. We know, in a general sense, people trust their minds to psychiatrists, their bodies to physicians, and their spirituality to preachers. Do these professionals agree with one another? No, not usually. That is why people are still sick, because they put their minds in one area, their bodies in another, and their spiritual lives in another. The doctor does not agree with the preacher, and the preacher does not agree with the doctor; the psychiatrist does not agree with either one—and we wonder why we are still incomplete.

A true minister will be a medical missionary. A true physician will be a preacher. “The minister will often be called upon to act the part of a physician. He should have a training that will enable him to administer the simpler remedies for the relief of suffering. Ministers and Bible workers should prepare themselves for this line of work; for in doing it, they are following the example of Christ. They should be as well prepared by education and practice to combat disease of the body as they are to heal the sin-sick soul by pointing to the great Physician.” Medical Ministry, 253. “The presenting of Bible principles by an intelligent physician will have great weight with many people. There is efficiency and power with one who can combine in his influence the work of a physician and of a gospel minister. His work commends itself to the good judgment of the people.” Counsels on Health, 546. Any preacher who is not a medical missionary cannot be as effective as he should, and a physician who incorporates the gospel in his work is more effective than without it.

Do you think that God would lead me to give you a Bible study only, when you are sitting there with a headache, or with tumors? No! Jesus is the primary example. His ministry was more involved with teaching and healing than with preaching. Preaching is only the beginning for a minister. His work is outside of the pulpit; it is with the people; it is in their homes. Jesus is our example.

Humanism

Let us return to the pool of Bethesda (John 5). Here was a pool of water with impotent folk lying around it. Think of yourself in this position. You are lying beside this pool with a debilitating disease, and you know that if you get into that pool you might be healed, if you are first once the angel stirs the water. If that were a reality, would you do it? Yes, many of you would. So if there were 1,000 people around that pool, it would mean that only the strongest survived. Because we are so desperate, when we take our eyes off of Jesus, the world presents something that we think is better. The pool of Bethesda is what I call the pool of human philosophy and the pool of human message.

Humanism leads us to believe that we can solve our own problems. We go to human beings; we can solve our financial problems; we can solve our marriage problems; and when we have children who are going astray, we do everything we can to try to solve their problems. We cry; we weep; and we wonder what we have done to fail them, instead of trusting them to the Lord. Wipe those tears away. If you have given them to God, He knows how to care for them. He had a child who went wild, so God can relate to us. The pool of Bethesda is humanism—trusting in self, trusting in man, trusting in man’s inventions.

The Bible tells us, “For thus saith the Lord, Thy bruise [is] incurable, [and] thy wound [is] grievous. [There is] none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines.” Jeremiah 30:12, 13. Man has no healing medicines; even in the medical field there are no healing medicines. The medicines may give some temporary relief, but there is no true, healing medicine.

At our lifestyle center in Tennessee, the majority of our guests are cancer cases. Prior to a recent session, a friend of mine was desperate to attend. Over a year before she had been diagnosed with cancer. She had had a year to come to the lifestyle center, but she chose not to come; she decided to go the traditional medicine route. Yes, sometimes surgery might be necessary, but she went through chemotherapy and radiation, and now she was dying and wanting to come to the center. If we do not seek God, before we take human action, things do not work out; then we want God to perform a miracle for us. If He does not perform a miracle, then we say that His Plan did not work. There are no healing medicines.

“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black;”—He is touched with the infirmities of every suffering soul—“astonishment hath taken hold on me. [Is there] no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” Jeremiah 8:20–22.

God Heals

Who makes you whole? “Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole.” Acts 9:34. “I [am] the Lord that healeth thee.” Exodus 15:26. Keep this in mind, no matter what—God is the one who heals you.

I used to be a professional athlete. God had to get my attention, because I would not listen to Him, so He allowed King Arthur to rule my life. King Arthur is arthritis. I was diagnosed at the age of 17, and it lasted until I was 27. It ruined my career, but it kept me out of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, for which I am eternally grateful. I could not have lasted a week in boot camp. My knees and joints were so bad, even steroids did not work anymore, and I began to take street drugs just so I could continue playing basketball.

My team physician looked in my eyes and said, “Tom, you are a good basketball player, but you will never be able to overcome arthritis.” He was a medical doctor, so I accepted what he said. He told me, “You are going to be on drugs the rest of your life.” He also told me there was no known cause for it. As I look back on this I ask, How do you prescribe a remedy for something you do not understand? Sometimes the remedy is worse than the cure.

Different Team

But God got my attention, and He told me He wanted me to trade my basketball for a Bible. Instead of going down the hardwood court, He coached me to go up and down the earth court, to be on a team that will never lose. For 25 years I have been on that team, and I have the best Coach. The pay is wonderful, and the retirement plan is out of this world.

When I picked up the Word of God, I was not a Christian. I grew up in a single-parent Baptist home; and I had a very loving, Christian mother who instilled biblical principles in me. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. The child may go out of the way, but when he is old, he will return. My mother saw her youngest child return back to the Lord. I am 54 years of age; it has been 27 years, and I have no traces of arthritis. I realized that it was Jesus who had the answer to every disease, to every cause, when man did not know. I went first to the Word of God.

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23. What does that say? Spirit, soul, and body. When we are talking about holy flesh, about this flesh becoming perfect, we are talking about this body becoming a fit vessel so that it can run the race. We are not going to get new bodies until Christ breaks the clouds of glory, but at the same time, that final church, the 144,000, will be health reformers. Each one of us has the privilege to be part of that elite group, whether we are young or old. God’s grace is sufficient. God said, “As thy days, [so shall] thy strength [be].” Deuteronomy 33:25.

No Healthy Sinners

Man is made up of three aspects—mental, physical, and spiritual. Jesus asks, “Wilt thou be made whole?” We cannot enjoy true physical health without mental and spiritual health. Many medical missionaries might do a little praying and talk a little about Jesus, enough to say they are Christians, but their whole focus is on the physical. Why is it that a man will gain the whole world and lose his soul? Why is it that a man can be healed of cancer of the body but still have cancer of the soul, so he dies, to just die again? God is not in the business of producing healthy sinners. I am not in the business, as a medical missionary, to get you well so that you can turn a gun on me. My point is this: The business of a medical missionary is to prepare people for eternity, and a Christian should not fear dying. If I have cancer, I am going to go God’s way, and if I die with cancer in the Lord, I have been victorious, because healing continues in the resurrection. If my focus is only on giving the person the physical therapy apart from the spiritual and mental, I have done nothing but contribute to Satan’s army.

Only God can teach us His true message. I thank God for the way that He led me. Before I read any other man’s book on health, I read the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. I challenge every medical missionary to spend more time studying the principles from the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, for then you have a barometer by which to interpret or decipher all of the other things that you read from other books. I challenge every medical missionary to go back to the Manual.

Children’s Story — A Faith That Never Dies

Having been raised in Colorado at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, I had the privilege of enjoying nature at its best. I remember well the Sabbath picnics, hikes and nature walks our family enjoyed. Jesus seemed so near to me when I was sitting by a cool, clear, laughing stream. Since I was introduced to music at an early age, I could hear an orchestra all around me in those majestic mountains—the whispering of the pines, the songs of birds and the occasional waterfall. God was real to me as I would sit by a crystal clear lake and look up into a beautiful blue sky with floating white clouds. I was born into a family with four older brothers, three of which had already moved away from home; and the fourth left in a short time. My mom and dad were special people, and I loved them very much. Dad spent his days working on cars. He was known by everyone for his honesty and kindness to others. Mother was always helping those in need. She would take a freshly baked loaf of bread to a shut-in, visit the sick, or buy groceries and do banking for an invalid. Both of them were diligent workers in God’s church and had a strong faith in His Word.

One night when I was five years old, I awoke with a terrible ache in my legs. After turning and tossing for quite some time, I called out to my mother for help. She came to my aid and rubbed my legs until I fell asleep. The next morning the pain returned, and my parents decided I needed to see the doctor. After many tests, it was determined that I had Rheumatic Fever.

One of my brothers had suffered with this disease two times during his youth, which resulted in a badly damaged heart and an early death after two open heart surgeries. The doctor decided that I was to have complete bed rest, without even a pillow for my head. Each morning, my father would carry me like a board to the sofa in the living room, and again at night to my bed. I was not allowed visits from my friends. If you are five years old, or can remember when you were, you can imagine what it would be like to lay flat on your back for hours, days, weeks, and, yes, even months! Mother would read me stories and sing to me. I looked at books and put puzzles together. To this day, I can close my eyes and tell you where each picture, mirror or clock hung on the walls of that room.

The greatest fear I had was the visit of the doctor when he came to draw blood, which was at least once a week and sometimes more often. As I began to improve, I was allowed to lie on the swing which hung from the roof of the porch. When I would see the doctor approaching, I would scream for mother to come to my rescue.

Mother loved flowers and the yard was filled with the fragrance of Lily of the Valley and Lilac trees which lined both sides of our property. Since we had no television I had to invent my own entertainment. On the side of the house, mother had some Hollyhocks and I would ask her to pick a few of the buds and a few of the flowers. I could put these together and imagine they were beautiful young ladies in flowing gowns—what fun that was!

The best part of the day was when my father would return home from his work, sit down and sing Norwegian songs to me and tell me stories of his childhood growing up amongst the Chippewa Indians on Lipsi Lake in Wisconsin. Sometimes they had nothing to eat and he would have to walk across the frozen lake at night in search of food while listening to the coyotes howl.

Many days, week and months went past until finally the last blood test revealed that all was well. My parents took their requests of healing to their best friend, Jesus, and then decided to take me to a Chiropractor and see what he could do for me. After working with me for some time, my legs were fully restored and I could run and play with the other children.

That was not the only time I saw my parents live out their faith in God. They endured many trials in their lifetime, but they loved the Lord with all their hearts and instilled in me the same desire to direct my every care to Him who loves us unconditionally.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1. I have had my faith tested many times, but I can say with assurance that God will never let us down. He will always be there for us and give us the strength we need to endure.

Questions and Answers – Why don’t we see miracles of healing today?

“We are told that, “God’s miracles do not always bear the outward semblance of miracles. Often they are brought about in a way which looks like the natural course of events. When we pray for the sick, we also work for them. We answer our own prayers by using the remedies within our reach. Water, wisely applied, is a most powerful remedy. As it is used intelligently, favorable results are seen. God has given us intelligence, and He desires us to make the most of His health-giving blessings. We ask that God will give bread to the hungry; we are then to act as His helping hand in relieving hunger. We are to use every blessing God has placed within our reach for the deliverance of those in danger.

“Natural means, used in accordance with God’s will, bring about supernatural results. We ask for a miracle, and the Lord directs the mind to some simple remedy. We ask to be kept from the pestilence that walketh in darkness, that is stalking with such power through the world; we are then to cooperate with God, observing the laws of health and life. Having done all that we possibly can, we are to keep asking in faith for health and strength. We are to eat that food which will preserve the health of the body.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 7, 938, 939.

God is working a healing miracle in each of our lives every day. Many who are following God’s eight laws of health are experiencing His miracle healing and preservation. These laws include: nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest and trust in Divine power.

Faith is essential. While here on earth, Jesus taught that faith was an essential part of His healing. When the woman touched the hem of Christ’s garment and was healed from her disease, Jesus said, “Thy faith hath made thee whole.” Matthew 9:22.

Obedience is also necessary. “God will not work a miracle to keep those from sickness who have no care for themselves, but are continually violating the laws of health and make no efforts to prevent disease. When we do all we can on our part to have health, then may we expect that the blessed results will follow, and we can ask God in faith to bless our efforts for the preservation of health.” Medical Ministry, 13.

Natural laws are to be obeyed. We need to follow the natural laws and teach others how to do so also.

We also must remember: “Men under the influence of evil spirits will work miracles. They will make people sick by casting their spell upon them, and will then remove the spell, leading others to say that those who were sick have been miraculously healed. This Satan has done again and again.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 53.

We need to ask God to open our eyes that we may behold and appreciate what He is doing in our lives each and every day. Praise God from whom all blessings flow—they are never ending.

Health – Our Healing Vegetables

The next time you sit down to a plate of vegetables consider the important healing virtues they have, for they are more than just a tasty food. We will consider using mint or comfrey or some other herb for healing purposes not realizing that our vegetables are also herbs and have their value in helping the body to heal itself. Let’s review briefly some of the valuable medicinal properties of some of the common vegetables.

A watchmaker suffered for a year with a painful eczema of both hands, preventing him from working. The lesions were acutely inflamed, and the fingernails were separating, about to fall off. Applications of cabbage leaves twice daily for a few days brought relief from pain, as clear fluid drained onto the dressing. With continued treatment, healing took place within two months.

In 1875, a 75-year-old man suffered arteriosclerotic gangrene of the lower right leg and foot. The skin was black and the front of the lower leg was decayed. Following the local application of cabbage leaf dressings, the skin changed from black to brown to red, and then returned to its normal healthy color.

It has not yet been discovered why the cabbage leaf has such remarkable healing properties. We only know that the cabbage leaf has a particular affinity for disease-causing fluids, forcing them from the tissues. It even seems that treating small areas of extensive disease benefits the whole; as distant toxins are removed, the cabbage promotes healing and scar tissue, thus preventing complications.

The long history of cures obtained with cabbage concern many different diseases, including simple and complicated injuries, rheumatic pains, facial neuralgia, headaches, leg ulcer, anthrax, and many others. Cabbage—raw in salads, juiced, or steamed—has incomparable virtues in the most diverse maladies. Cabbage juice mixed with honey makes a syrup that heals hoarseness and coughing.

How to Prepare and Apply Cabbage Leaves

The preparation of cabbage for various disorders is as follows: Wash the leaves or soak them for a few minutes in water to which lemon juice has been added. Wipe dry, then use a knife or scissors to remove the central rib and, if the application is planned for an ulcer or sensitive wound, the secondary ribs. Crush the leaves, one by one, with a rolling pin or bottle. The juice appears at the surface of the leaves, ready for application. One, two, or three applications will be required according to the severity of the disease. Cover with a thick cloth and continue the application for several hours, generally overnight, or during the day if pain prevents sleep.

For a very sensitive wound, plunge the leaves for one or two seconds into boiling water, softening them, and reducing the possibility of irritation.

If cabbage leaves are applied to ulcers with swollen irritated margins, soak the leaves first for one-half hour in olive oil. The resulting preparation will soothe inflamed tissues as well as combating infection and aid healing.

Cabbage leaves applied to an infected wound, ulcer, or oozing eczema should be layered like roof shingles, allowing secretions to drain between the layers. When treating lumbago, joint pain, or various afflictions of the nerve or bladder, poultices of cabbage leaves bring rapid relief. A poultice is prepared as follows:

2–4 cabbage leaves

2 whole chopped onions

3–4 handfuls of bran

a small amount of water

Boil for 20 minutes. After evaporation of the water, place the poultice on gauze and apply hot for one or two hours, or even for the whole night. (Never apply heat to a painful abdomen. Only the physician can properly diagnose the cause of abdominal pain, and the application of heat to appendicitis or infection of the ovary may be harmful.)

Doctor Garnett-Cheney, Professor at the Medical School of Stanford, published a report concerning the use of cabbage juice in the treatment of gastric ulcers. Of 65 cases reported in his series, 62 were cured at the end of three weeks. (Cal Med 1949;70:10; Lancet 1954; ii: 1200.)

Cabbage has been found to be of infinite value for pregnant women, and for patients with anemia, fatigue, infections, intestinal parasites, stones, and arthritis.

The Red Beet

The common red beet is a highly nutritious plant. The root is an excellent appetite stimulant and is easily digested. The root has been used to treat constipation, liver ailments, dysentery, skin disorders, anemia, menstruation problems, obesity, and nervousness. One therapy for leukemia and tumors is to consume a couple of pounds of raw, mashed beets daily.

About ten percent of the beet root consists of a sugar that is more easily handled by the body than cane sugar and about a third of the root consists of starch and gum. The special value of the root is its effect on the liver and spleen. Some consume beets during an attack of the flu.

Beets are a potent anti-cancer treatment and are also great for detoxing the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, blood and lymph. They are also high in folate, which is good for your bones, and they are helpful in treating constipation.

Other Vegetables

The tuber of the Jerusalem artichoke is used in cases of gas, constipation and biliousness and as a substitute for potatoes. As it is considered starchless, diabetics who must watch their starch intake use it.

To remove toxins from the kidney apparatus as well as kidney stones, the parsnip has been used. It seems to be useful in cases of inflammation of the joints, colon, and nerves.

The green bell-shaped pepper is especially good for liver disorders, obesity, constipation, high blood pressure and acidosis.

The sweet potato is easily digestible and is good for inflammation of the colon or stomach and also for hemorrhoids. It is helpful to eat the sweet potato in cases of diarrhea and for problems of low blood pressure and poor circulation.

Another good food for inflamed intestines, stomach ulcers, and hemorrhoids is the pumpkin. The pumpkin seed is much recommended for prostate problems, tape and other worm elimination and constipation.

Radishes stimulate the appetite, are good for the hair and nails, teeth, gums and nerves. They help speed up recuperation from nervous exhaustion. Many have been helped in cases of constipation by eating radishes. Pulmonary disorders such as whooping cough, asthma, and bronchitis have been treated with the radish and its leaves. Chronic liver and gallbladder disease including gallstone and kidney stone afflictions have responded by eating the whole plant. The radish is good for vitamin C, D, and P deficiency.

Summer squash and zucchini are good to use where there are problems with high blood pressure, constipation, obesity and for bladder and kidney afflictions. The winter squash has more nutrients than the summer squash and is good for colitis, inflammation of the stomach or intestines, hemorrhoids and diarrhea. 100 grams of winter squash contain about 5,000 IU (international unit) of vitamin A. The high vitamin A content makes the winter squash a valuable food for the winter time.

The roots and leaves of the turnip are recommended in cases of pulmonary disease, obesity, kidney stones, and gout, as it promotes the elimination of uric acid. Drink a turnip broth for common colds and infections. Turnip roots have also been used to relieve nervousness and insomnia. Eat the greens for cases of poor appetite, bronchitis, asthma, liver problems, bladder disorders, gout, high blood pressure and tuberculosis.

When nature gave us parsley, it gave an amazing and extremely versatile plant to aid the body in regaining its health. Parsley is chiefly used for renal congestion, inflammation of the kidneys and bladder, gravel, stones, and urine retention. The root and leaves are excellent for the liver and spleen when jaundice and venereal diseases are present. It is also one of the best reliefs for edema, helping when other remedies have failed. Parsley root contains ingredients that help produce a pain relieving benefit to relax stiff joints. Many have used parsley root tea to make stiff and unmanageable fingers work again. The root contains calcium, B-complex vitamins, and iron, all of which nourish the parathyroid glands which are concerned with the regulation of calcium in the body. Pour a quart of boiling water over a cup of firmly packed fresh parsley and steep for 15 minutes. Strain and then refrigerate.

Although parsley is a very reliable and old diuretic remedy, it is very much ignored today. Parsley will work on the gall bladder and will remove gallstones, if used properly, by taking a pint of the tea daily. Parsley is a specific for the adrenal glands, is powerfully therapeutic for the optic nerves, the brain nerves and the whole sympathetic nervous system. Parsley juice is an excellent tonic for the blood vessels, particularly the capillaries and arterioles. But remember that raw parsley juice is a most potent juice and should never be taken alone in quantities of more than one or two ounces at a time unless it is mixed into a sufficient quantity of carrot or other juices. The usual remedy for kidney, bladder, and edema is to make at least two quarts of a strong parsley tea and drink copiously. If the urine is suppressed, drink one half to one teacupful, hot, every hour.

These simple herbs are just a few of the tremendous blessings given to us from our Father in heaven. Enjoy and praise the Lord continually for truly “His mercy endureth forever.” Psalm 118:1.

Cleansing the Soul Temple

“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple; and He healed them.”
Matthew 21:12–14

Notice that it was after Jesus cleansed the temple, declaring it a house of prayer, that the blind and the lame came into the temple to be healed.

In Counsels on Diets and Foods, 25, Ellen White says, “In order to be purified and to remain pure, Seventh-day Adventists must have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and in their homes.” Keep that in mind. It goes on to say, “The Lord has given me light that when the Israel of today humble themselves before Him, and cleanse the soul temple from all defilement, He will hear their prayers in behalf of the sick.” Then, when we pray, He will hear.

Our churches are inundated with folks who are sick. Apparently our prayers are not being heard in behalf of the sick. Inspiration says, “He will hear their prayers in behalf of the sick, and will bless in the use of His remedies for disease. When in faith the human agent does all he can to combat disease, using the simple methods of treatment that God has provided, his efforts will be blessed of God.” Ibid. That promise is fulfilled when “the soul temple is cleansed from all defilement.”

In the very beginning of Christ’s work, He cleansed the temple (Matthew 21:12). At the end of His work, He said, “Your house is left unto you desolate.” Matthew 23:38.

The first chapter in the book The Ministry of Healing is called “Our Example.” If we are going to conduct evangelistic efforts, and if we are going to live a life according to heaven’s plan, we must pattern ourselves after the Great Gospel Medical Missionary. His example is our example. We need not study any other example but His.

Matthew 10 describes the mission of the church. One thing I learned in more than 30 years of evangelism is that many times we put our little placards out and our announcements, and we hope people will come. But I noticed that before Jesus began to do any public evangelism, He set the pathway; He put together a team.

The worst thing that can be done is to start an effort that cannot be finished. It is the worst thing, to get people excited and then not have any workers to work the field. I remember years ago we planted an acre of watermelon, honeydew melons, and cantaloupe on one of the pieces of property where we are living, about 25 miles from the ministry. Looking down from a helicopter I could see how organized and neat the rows were; it was pretty. That was a lot of effort for two families; what were we thinking? I tell you, the deer had a good time! That experience let me know that we planted far more than what we were able to manage and harvest. So, why start something that cannot be finished? It would be best not to start.

In Matthew 10:1, the Bible says, “And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power.” He gave them what? That word power here means authority. He gave them authority. His own credentials came from God, and He gave this authority to His disciples.

Healing and Religion

Healing and religion are inseparable. My faith, my belief is the very basis of my position in dealing with health, and the two cannot be separated. The State has no right to interfere with that position. The only church that is recognized by the State to practice natural remedies is the Church of Scientology. We are a called people who have been entrusted with the saving truths that this world needs, and part of our religious experience is the ministry of healing. But legally we cannot carry out a health work apart from being licensed as allopathic doctors. Every religion has a healing message, whether it is Hindu, Buddhism or Confucius. Because we have been running a facility for years in the state of Tennessee, I have studied the laws pertaining to that state. The law they call “alternative medicine,” or naturopathy or naturopathic medicine says, “Anyone using sunlight, water, botanical plants, that has not been licensed is subject to a $500.00 fine every time they practice this.” Sunlight, exercise, water—those are part of the eight laws of health! The ministry we operated in Florida had to be closed down in Lake City, because just to talk about or tell a person to eat fruit, grains, nuts, and vegetables was against the law.

God has given the church the mission; notice what the Bible says: “He gave them power [authority] against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” Matthew 10:1. The same God that called those twelve is the same God living today. “These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach [that is the gospel], saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand, Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Verses 5–8.

Jesus said to preach the gospel and heal the sick. The mission of the church is to carry out the gospel connected with the health message. The health message is not the gospel, but it is the right arm. The arm is useless without a body! God has given this church spiritual gifts, as listed in I Corinthians 12:1–11, and specifically the gift of healing (verse 9). But most of us don’t believe those gifts; we have been falsely educated believing that this work is entrusted only to those who have been qualified as a physician.

Everyone should understand this house that God has built, your body, and the natural laws that govern it. The health message breaks down prejudices. At Missionary Education and Evangelistic Training (M.E.E.T.) Ministry, Huntingdon, Tennessee, we talk about movements. When you don’t have a movement, biologically, you become constipated. We belong to a movement, and all who are not moving are going to become spiritually constipated, which creates an environment for bacteria to grow. The Adventist Church is not only a church, not just another denomination, but we are also a movement. We have to be about God’s business.

There is going to be trouble in the land, much more than there is today, so pray. God has given the church the tools, the gift of healing, to preach the gospel with the medical missionary work. This is true healing based on faith, not to be mistaken by a false faith healing practiced by some popular churches today.

“And it came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude.” Luke 5:17–19

There was such a crowd of people that the man’s friends were blocked from bringing him in to Jesus. We too sometimes can crowd people out by our attitudes, with our thinking, with our lifestyle and other things that can prevent people from coming to Jesus. But this man’s friends did not give up, and they took the palsied man to the rooftop where they tore the roof open so they could let him down to Jesus. The Bible says Jesus looked up and saw their faith (verses 19, 20). This means I can bear up my own family, my community, my church, my wife or whoever, in the arms of my faith, and I can present them to Jesus and give Him the prerogative to divinely intervene in their lives.

I am here today as the result of my own mother bearing me up in the arms of her faith. And I remember one of my former workers that had been with us 14 years, and she prayed for her mother for 30 years to come into this message. She finally accepted the truth a little while before she died. Do not give up! If you have the faith of Jesus Christ, do not get anxious or sick over those folk, but bear them up in arms of faith, especially if they are old and you cannot preach to them anymore. Live the life yourself, bearing them up in your arms of faith, and watch God do something miraculous. Like my mother used to pray, “God, save the boy. Whatever it takes, save the boy.” And God sure did a work on me. My knees got weak, old arthritis moved in and stopped me cold. Did God answer my mother’s prayer? Yes He did, when He saw her faith.

“And when He saw their faith, He said unto him, ‘Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.’ ” Verse 20. Now understand this, healing and forgiveness go hand in hand, because sickness is the result of sin. This is not to say that you might have committed an act of injustice to bring it about. If there was no sin, there would be no cancer and no diabetes. So my focus as a medical missionary is to see people get well, but what good does it do for man to be free from sickness, and go to hell? God is not in the business of making healthy sinners. He wants to save people.

Now notice this in verse 21: “And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” Now remember, the presence of God was there to heal, and here are leaders reasoning in their heart, questioning Jesus’ authority. They are about ready to impede the healing process. “But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?” Verses 22, 23.

I ask the same question to you. Which is easier for Jesus to do? To say, “Thy sins be forgiven thee,” or “pick up thy bed and walk”? Sin, healing and forgiveness are all tied together. There is nothing too hard for God. In order to have healing, there has to be forgiveness. So the Pharisees began to reason in their heart, because they were not in the same place that Jesus was. They were trying to prevent the healing, and that’s what takes place in the church. There are those who question the authority of God, and that often prevents the healing.

We have people who simply do not believe, who question, or who say, “That does not work,” or “God did not say that. You cannot use this; that is not of God.” No Scripture reasons are offered, just opinions. But we do not base our moves on opinions. It must be, “Thus saith the Lord.” It is not, “Thus saith the church” or “Thus saith the state.” It is only “Thus saith the Lord.”

Jesus Casts out the Evil Spirit

In Mark 9:17–25 it says, “And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto Thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to Thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He answereth him and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto Me. And they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And He asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if Thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.’ ” Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.” And we understand the story how it ended.

In verses 28, 29 it says, “And when He was come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, Why could not we cast him out? And He said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but prayer and fasting.” Prayer and fasting. Healing crisis. We are holding on to known sin in our lives; we are not communing with God; we are sinners. The power of God is in every occasion such as this present to heal. God said in Matthew that, “My house shall be called the house of prayer.” He was quoting Isaiah 56:7. There is power in prayer. We need to become men and women of prayer. Less talking and more prayer and we will find there is healing power.

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye might be healed.” Now notice what the Bible says: “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16. What kind of man? When we think of a righteous man, we think about a person who is living up to the light. We are not talking about a person who is holding on to known sins.

In the work that we are called to do, we cannot afford to have our prayers not heard in behalf of the people with whom we are dealing. I must take inventory of my own life. Lord, search my heart and see if there is any sin in me. Know my thoughts; Father, I do not want my prayers to be hindered. (See Psalm 139:24; I Peter 3:7.)

“Satan is enraged at the sound of fervent prayer, for he knows that he will suffer loss.” Testimonies, vol. 1, 295. If we want to shake Satan’s kingdom, let us be men and women of fervent prayer. When God flooded the earth with water, the devil feared for his life. By fervent prayer we will transfer our anxiety from us to Him.

God Restores

“God is just as willing to restore the sick to health now as when the Holy Spirit spoke these words [Psalm 107:17–20] through the psalmist. And Christ is the same compassionate physician now that He was during His earthly ministry. In Him there is healing balm for every disease, restoring power for every infirmity. His disciples in this time are to pray for the sick as verily as the disciples of old prayed. And recoveries will follow; for ‘the prayer of faith shall save the sick’ [James 5:15]. We have the Holy Spirit’s power, the calm assurance of faith, that can claim God’s promises. The Lord’s promise, ‘They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover’ (Mark 16:18), is just as trustworthy now as in the days of the apostles.” The Ministry of Healing, 226.

We are still living in the days of the apostles. We are His people, and there needs to be power in God’s church. We should become the head and not the tail. And once again, we can bear them up in the arms of our faith.

“It presents the privilege of God’s children, and our faith should lay hold of all that it embraces. Christ’s servants are the channel of His working, and through them He desires to exercise His healing power.” Through whom? Through us! He didn’t say through just certain people, He said, “Through them He desires to exercise His healing power. It is our work to present the sick and suffering to God in the arms of our faith. We should teach them to believe in the Great Healer.

“The Saviour would have us encourage the sick, the hopeless, the afflicted, to take hold upon His strength. Through faith and prayer the sickroom may be transformed into a Bethel.” Ibid.

Keep it Simple and Live It

I tell our staff at our little lifestyle center that’s why we keep it small and simple. I tell them it is not just about the herbs, it is not about the fever bath, it is not about all that we cleanse. As soon as clients walk on these grounds, they should know that they are in the presence of God. And when you walk into that room, they should sense the presence of God with you. It is not your herbs, it is not your vitamins, it is the Spirit that empowers you, and we have seen results of that, whether they are Jehovah’s Witnesses, whether they are atheists, they come out of that place serving God.

That is the key. Every facility should become a Bethel, and those people who minister are the ones that make it that way. You can have all the experience, all the medical techniques, and all the herbs, but if the spirit of God is not working, it avails nothing. “The prayer of faith will move the arm of God.” The Signs of the Times, September 4, 1879. When God’s arm moves, all heaven and earth have got to shake; then you tell me, if my prayer can move the arm of God, nothing is impossible.

Prayer the Key

The prayer life of Jesus was in constant communing with God. He could not function without communing with His Father. It was not two-minute prayers. He agonized; He stayed there; it was a dialog with God, and He was embraced. That is the prayer life that we all need, an intense prayer life. And you know what hinders our prayers? If we regard iniquity in our heart, if we have ought against a brother over anything, God will not hear our prayers (Psalm 66:18).

We need to be cleansed, for judgment first begins at the house of God. God wants to remove every encumbrance. We are living in the great Day of Atonement when our sins are by confession and repentance to go beforehand to judgment. God does not now accept a tame spiritless testimony from His ministers, for such a testimony would not be present truth. The message for this time must be meat in due season to feed the church of God. But Satan has been seeking gradually to rob this message of its power that the people may not be prepared to stand in the Day of the Lord.

At this time, while we are living in the antitypical day of atonement, Christ has come into His temple; He wants to cleanse the temple from all that separates us from God—our sins, jealousy, murmuring—so we can be one with Him. He will purify the sons of Levi as silver (Malachi 3:1–3). It takes fire and water to purify silver. God says He wants to purify you, He wants to see a reflection of Himself in you.

“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 69. Christ is looking for the picture of Himself in you. He’s not looking so much for many more buildings to be erected, but for a portrait of Himself in you.

Leper Cleansed

“And it came to pass, when He was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought Him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” Luke 5:12. When the leper said to Jesus, “If thou wilt,” he said, “Jesus, You can choose to make me clean, if You want to.” He didn’t ask, “Is it possible?” He said, “Lord, You can make me clean.” So we need to understand that God can make us clean, and we know it is His will.

I want you to notice something in verse 13: “And He put forth His hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.” How long did it take for Jesus to cleanse the leper? He did it immediately. I hope we can get this point.

Of all the diseases to which mankind is heir, there is none more loathsome than leprosy. I remember seeing a documentary on a leper colony. We saw a leper smoking his cigarette and fire was burning his finger, but the man could not feel the fire. Leprosy gets to the very nerves and desensitizes. The individual lives for years with this dread disease slowly eating away portions of his body until he longs for death as a relief. The trials we experience are nothing compared to that. From the earliest times, leprosy has been a type of sin. It is a very fitting type. It is of that loathsome spiritual disease which destroys the soul.

When God’s voice speaks to us, or when the word of God convicts us, and we say, “Not now, Lord,” every time we violate our conscience it becomes dead, dead, dead. Sin eats us away while we do not even feel it. It is not safe to ignore the voice of God. Leprosy is a very contagious disease and everything the leper touches is contaminated. Sin is also a dreadful disease and the earth, the air, and the water are all cursed by its touch. It affects our flesh, our garments, and our home. Leprosy affects every aspect of our lives. In the book of Jude 23, it says that we have spots in our flesh—selfishness, pride; flesh deals with our character, who we are. Therefore, this leprosy of sin, affects our moral disposition. It contaminates our whole life.

Leprosy a Type of Jealousy

We read in Numbers 12:1–15 the story of Miriam the sister of Moses. The illustration here is of her complaining and murmuring that caused her to become leprous. So, leprosy is a type of jealousy and murmuring. God will not hear our prayers in behalf of the sick while ever we suffer with the leprosy of sin. He wants to cleanse us first and then use us to help others.

Leprosy a Type of Covetousness

We find in II Kings 5:1–27 the story of Naaman who was a leper. The prophet Elisha told him to go and dip in the Jordan seven times, and he came out whole. Elisha refused the payment that Naaman offered him, but not Elisha’s covetous servant who caught up with Naaman, lied and accepted gifts on Elisha’s behalf. The gifts did him no good. Leprosy is a type of covetousness. If we are holding on to covetousness desiring something that does not belong to us, we have leprosy.

In Leviticus 13:45, the leper had to go around and put his hand over his mouth, meaning that the very breath that he breathed was contaminated. Our words, if we are not careful how we speak, can hurt somebody, because life and death is in the tongue.

It is our tongue, our words, our influence that are contagious. They affect the whole person. Our tongues and our whole lives need to be cleansed. God wants to remove the leprosy out of our characters, move into our body temples and bring healing so He can hear our prayers.

Jesus said, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9. Do not continue to hold on to known sin, such as pride, selfishness, self-exaltation, or any resentment but pray, “Father turn the tables; please, cleanse this temple so I can become a house of prayer. I want my life to be a dwelling place.”

Cleansing the Leper

Two birds were to be taken to the priest. One was to be killed in an earthen vessel over water and the other was to be dipped in the blood before being set free. (See Leviticus 14:4–7). The bird that was set free represents you and me, dipped in the blood of that dead bird which represents Jesus. The work of Christ in cleansing the leper from his terrible disease is an illustration of His work in cleansing the soul from sin. The man who came to Jesus was full of leprosy, and the deadly poison permeated his whole body. The disciples sought to prevent their Master from touching him, for he who touched a leper became unclean himself. But in laying His hands upon the leper, Jesus received no defilement. His touch imparted life-giving power, and the leper was cleansed.

Thus it is with the leprosy of sin which is deep-rooted and deadly and impossible to be cleansed by human power. “The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores.” Isaiah 1:5, 6.

Now notice this: “But Jesus, coming to dwell in humanity, receives no pollution. His presence has healing virtue for the sinner. Whoever will fall at His feet, saying in faith, ‘Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean,’ shall hear the answer, ‘I will; be thou made clean’ [Matthew 8:2, 3].” The Desire of Ages, 266.

This statement is so dear to my heart. It says, “In some instances of healing, Jesus did not at once grant the blessing sought. But in the case of leprosy, no sooner was the appeal made than it was granted. When we pray for earthly blessings, the answer to our prayer may be delayed, or God may give us something other than we ask, but not so when we ask for deliverance from sin.” Ibid.

You can pray for a car, for a van, for a house, and God may say, “Wait,” but when it comes down to sin in our life, God does not wait. He is ready to answer instantly.

“It is His will to cleanse us from sin, to make us His children, and to enable us to live a holy life. Christ ‘gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father.’ [Galatians 1:4].” Ibid.

We can be made whole. God will hear our prayers.

Bible Study Guides – In Times of Sickness

December 2, 2012 – December 8, 2012

Key Text

“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” James 5:15.

Study Help: Testimonies, vol. 2, 145–150; The Ministry of Healing, 225–233; Selected Messages, Book 2, 53–61.

Introduction

“When you neglect to offer prayer for the sick, you deprive them of great blessings; for angels of God are waiting to minister to these souls in response to your petitions.” Medical Ministry, 195.

1 LOOKING TO THE MASTER HEALER

  • What should we learn from the main difference between the cases of Hezekiah and Asa when they were sick? II Kings 20:1–7; II Chronicles 16:12, 13.
  • Name one important element in full restoration to good health. James 5:14, 15; Matthew 9:2–8. What was Ellen White’s overall experience in helping the sick?

Note: “You can speak often to the sick of the Great Physician who can heal the diseases of the body as verily as He heals the sickness of the soul. Pray with the sick, and try to lead them to see in Christ their Healer. Tell them that if they will look to Him in faith, He will say to them, ‘Thy sins be forgiven thee’ [Matthew 9:2]. It means very much to the sick to learn this lesson.” Medical Ministry, 196, 197.

“Multitudes have heard me speak, and have read my writings, but no one has ever heard me claim to work miracles. I have at times been called upon to pray for the sick, and the word of the Lord has been verified. [James 5:14, 15 quoted.] Christ is the great miracle worker. To Him be all the glory.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 54.

  • What interesting example shows that even when Christ lived on earth, He did not always heal people instantly, in only one step? Mark 8:22–25.

2 AVOIDING A REAL TEMPTATION

  • Of what must we be aware when praying about disease? Matthew 7:15–23; 24:23–25; Proverbs 28:9.

Note: “Men under the influence of evil spirits will work miracles. They will make people sick by casting their spell upon them, and will then remove the spell, leading others to say that those who were sick have been miraculously healed. This Satan has done again and again.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 53.

“The apostles of nearly all forms of spiritism claim to have power to heal. They attribute this power to electricity, magnetism, the so-called ‘sympathetic remedies,’ or to latent forces within the mind of man. And there are not a few, even in this Christian age, who go to these healers, instead of trusting in the power of the living God and the skill of well-qualified physicians. The mother, watching by the sickbed of her child, exclaims, ‘I can do no more. Is there no physician who has power to restore my child?’ She is told of the wonderful cures performed by some clairvoyant or magnetic healer, and she trusts her dear one to his charge, placing it as verily in the hand of Satan as if he were standing by her side. In many instances the future life of the child is controlled by a satanic power which it seems impossible to break.” Prophets and Kings, 211.

“Satan gives his power to those who are aiding him in his deceptions; therefore those who claim to have the great power of God can only be discerned by the great detector, the law of Jehovah. The Lord tells us if it were possible they would deceive the very elect. The sheep’s clothing seems so real, so genuine, that the wolf cannot be discerned only as we go to God’s great moral standard and there find that they are transgressors of the law of Jehovah.” The Review and Herald, August 25, 1885.

“The way in which Christ worked was to preach the Word, and to relieve suffering by miraculous works of healing. But I am instructed that we cannot now work in this way, for Satan will exercise his power by working miracles. God’s servants today could not work by means of miracles, because spurious works of healing, claiming to be divine, will be wrought.

“For this reason the Lord has marked out a way in which His people are to carry forward a work of physical healing, combined with the teaching of the Word. Sanitariums are to be established, and with these institutions are to be connected workers who will carry forward genuine medical missionary work. Thus a guarding influence is thrown around those who come to the sanitariums for treatment.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 54.

3 CONDITIONS TO FULFILL

  • What conditions are attached to God’s promises of healing? Isaiah 58:6–11.

Note: “In the case of Sister F, there needed to be a great work accomplished. Those who united in praying for her needed a work done for them. Had God answered their prayers, it would have proved their ruin. In such cases of affliction, where Satan has control of the mind, before engaging in prayer there should be the closest self examination to discover if there are not sins which need to be repented of, confessed, and forsaken. Deep humility of soul before God is necessary, and firm, humble reliance upon the merits of the blood of Christ alone. Fasting and prayer will accomplish nothing while the heart is estranged from God by a wrong course of action. [Isaiah 58:6, 7, 9–11 quoted.]” Testimonies, vol. 2, 145, 146.

  • What factors are essential in praying for the sick? James 5:16.

Note: “In the word of God we have instruction relative to special prayer for the recovery of the sick. But the offering of such prayer is a most solemn act, and should not be entered upon without careful consideration. In many cases of prayer for the healing of the sick, that which is called faith is nothing less than presumption.

“Many persons bring disease upon themselves by their self-indulgence. They have not lived in accordance with natural law or the principles of strict purity. Others have disregarded the laws of health in their habits of eating and drinking, dressing or working. Often some form of vice is the cause of feebleness of mind or body. Should these persons gain the blessing of health, many of them would continue to pursue the same course of heedless transgression of God’s natural and spiritual laws, reasoning that if God heals them in answer to prayer, they are at liberty to continue their unhealthful practices and to indulge perverted appetite without restraint. If God were to work a miracle in restoring these persons to health, He would be encouraging sin.

“It is labor lost to teach people to look to God as a healer of their infirmities, unless they are taught also to lay aside unhealthful practices. In order to receive His blessing in answer to prayer, they must cease to do evil and learn to do well. Their surroundings must be sanitary, their habits of life correct. They must live in harmony with the law of God, both natural and spiritual.” Gospel Workers, 215, 216.

4 A WISE AND JUST LIFEGIVER

  • What must be considered by all who are blessed with health? Luke 12:47, 48.

Note: “If, after so much light has been given, God’s people will cherish wrong habits, indulging self and refusing to reform, they will suffer the sure consequences of transgression. If they are determined to gratify perverted appetite at any cost, God will not miraculously save them from the consequences of their indulgence. They ‘shall lie down in sorrow.’ Isaiah 50:11.

“Those who choose to be presumptuous, saying, ‘The Lord has healed me, and I need not restrict my diet; I can eat and drink as I please,’ will erelong need, in body and soul, the restoring power of God. Because the Lord has graciously healed you, you must not think you can link yourselves up with the self-indulgent practices of the world. Do as Christ commanded after His work of healing—‘go, and sin no more.’ John 8:11. Appetite must not be your god.” Testimonies, vol. 9, 164.

  • What should we keep in mind even when death is imminent? Revelation 14:13.

Note: “We know that God hears us if we ask according to His will. But to press our petitions without a submissive spirit is not right; our prayers must take the form, not of command, but of intercession.

“There are cases where God works decidedly by His divine power in the restoration of health. But not all the sick are healed. Many are laid away to sleep in Jesus. … [Revelation 14:13 quoted]. From this we see that if persons are not raised to health, they should not, on this account be judged as wanting in faith.” The Ministry of Healing, 230.

“I was shown that in case of sickness, where the way is clear for the offering up of prayer for the sick, the case should be committed to the Lord in calm faith, not with a storm of excitement. He alone is acquainted with the past life of the individual and knows what his future will be. He who is acquainted with the hearts of all men knows whether the person, if raised up, would glorify His name or dishonor Him by backsliding and apostasy. All that we are required to do is to ask God to raise the sick up if in accordance with His will, believing that He hears the reasons which we present and the fervent prayers offered. If the Lord sees it will best honor Him, He will answer our prayers. But to urge recovery without submission to His will is not right.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 147, 148.

5 ESSENTIAL POINTS WHEN PRAYING

  • What key thoughts should be always remembered in our prayers for the sick? I John 2:1; Lamentations 3:33; Psalm 103:13, 14.

Note: “Present these thoughts to the persons who come asking for your prayers: We are human; we cannot read the heart or know the secrets of your life. These are known only to yourself and God. If you now repent of your sin, if any of you can see that in any instance you have walked contrary to the light given you of God and have neglected to give honor to the body, the temple of God, but by wrong habits have degraded the body which is Christ’s property, make confession of these things to God. Unless you are wrought upon by the Holy Spirit in special manner to confess your sins of private nature to man, do not breathe them to any soul.

“Christ is your Redeemer; He will take no advantage of your humiliating confessions. If you have sin of a private character, confess it to Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and man. [I John 2:1 quoted.] If you have sinned by withholding from God His own in tithes and offerings, confess your guilt to God and to the church, and heed the injunction that He has given you: ‘Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse.’ Malachi 3:10. …

“Praying for the sick is a most solemn thing, and we should not enter into this work in any careless, hasty way. Examination should be made as to whether those who would be blessed with health have indulged in evilspeaking, alienation, and dissension. Have they sowed discord among the brethren and sisters of the church? If these things have been committed they should be confessed before God and the church. When wrongs have been confessed the subjects for prayer may be presented before God in earnestness and faith, as the Spirit of God may move upon you.” Counsels on Health, 373, 374.

Key Text

“If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.” Exodus 15:26.

Study Help: Counsels on Health, 49–51, 206, 207; Counsels on Diet and Foods, 32–40.

Introduction

“There are many ways of practicing the healing art, but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God’s remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 443.

“You need clear, energetic minds, in order to appreciate the exalted character of the truth, to value the atonement, and to place the right estimate upon eternal things. If you pursue a wrong course, and indulge in wrong habits of eating, and thereby weaken the intellectual powers, you will not place that high estimate upon salvation and eternal life which will inspire you to conform your life to the life of Christ; you will not make those earnest, self-sacrificing efforts for entire conformity to the will of God, which His word requires and which are necessary to give you a moral fitness for the finishing touch of immortality.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 47.

“Even if you are strict in the quality of your food, do you glorify God in your bodies and spirits which are His, by partaking of such a quantity of food? Those who place so much food upon the stomach, and thus load down nature, could not appreciate the truth should they hear it dwelt upon. They could not arouse the benumbed sensibilities of the brain to realize the value of the atonement, and the great sacrifice that has been made for fallen man. It is impossible for such to appreciate the great, the precious, and the exceedingly rich reward that is in reserve for the faithful overcomers. The animal part of our nature should never be left to govern the moral and intellectual.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 364.

1 SICKNESS AND SORROW ABOUND

  • Why is there so much sickness and sorrow around us? Galatians 6:7; Deuteronomy 28:15, 21, 22, 60, 61.

Note: “It is a great thing to ensure health by placing ourselves in right relations to the laws of life, and many have not done this. A large share of the sickness and suffering among us is the result of the transgression of physical law, is brought upon individuals by their own wrong habits.” Counsels on Health, 49.

  • Why is there sickness also among God’s professed people? Proverbs 3:7, 8; 4:20–22.

Note: “Satan, the author of disease and misery, will approach God’s people where he can have the greatest success. He has controlled the appetite in a great measure from the time of his successful experiment with Eve, in leading her to eat the forbidden fruit. He came with his temptations first to the mixed multitude, the believing Egyptians, and stirred them up to seditious murmurings. They would not be content with the healthful food which God had provided for them. Their depraved appetites craved a greater variety, especially flesh meats.” Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4a, 15.

  • What can we do about this problem? I Corinthians 6:19, 20; Romans 12:1, 2.

Note: “In regard to that which we can do for ourselves, there is a point that requires careful, thoughtful consideration. I must become acquainted with myself. I must be a learner always as to how to take care of this building, the body God has given me, that I may preserve it in the very best condition of health. I must eat those things which will be for my very best good physically, and I must take special care to have my clothing such as will conduce to a healthful circulation of the blood. I must not deprive myself of exercise and air. I must get all the sunlight that it is possible for me to obtain. I must have wisdom to be a faithful guardian of my body.” Child Guidance, 366, 367.

2 HEALING ARTS

  • What do most people do when they are sick? Matthew 9:12; Luke 8:43. How do many fall into Satan’s trap?

Note: “Satanic agents claim to cure disease. They attribute their power to electricity, magnetism, or the so-called ‘sympathetic remedies,’ while in truth they are but channels for Satan’s electric currents. By this means he casts his spell over the bodies and souls of men.” The Signs of the Times, March 24, 1887.

  • What warning should we take to heart regarding Satan’s methods of healing? Proverbs 16:25; Ezekiel 44:23.

Note: “It should ever be kept prominent that the great object to be attained through [the Battle Creek Health Institute] is not only health, but perfection, and the spirit of holiness, which cannot be attained with diseased bodies and minds. This object cannot be secured by working merely from the worldling’s standpoint.” Testimonies, vol. 1, 554.

  • Besides the health of the body, what else does God seek to restore through His healing methods? Psalm 103:1–3; Mark 6:13; Philippians 2:5.

Note: “The apostles of nearly all forms of spiritism claim to have the power to cure the diseased. They attribute their power to electricity, magnetism, the so-called ‘sympathetic remedies,’ or to latent forces within the mind of man. And there are not a few, even in this Christian age, who go to these healers, instead of trusting in the power of the living God and the skill of well-qualified Christian physicians.” Evangelism, 606.

  • What is the basic difference between God’s method and Satan’s method?

Note: “Christ’s remedies cleanse the system. But Satan has tempted man to introduce into the system that which weakens the human machinery, clogging and destroying the fine, beautiful arrangements of God.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 289.

3 HEAVEN’S PLAN

  • What are God’s methods of healing? Psalm 67:2. How are these methods intended to be a blessing?

Note: “God’s remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and a firm trust in God are remedies for the want of which thousands are dying; yet these remedies are going out of date because their skillful use requires work that the people do not appreciate. Fresh air, exercise, pure water, and clean, sweet premises are within the reach of all with but little expense; but drugs are expensive, both in the outlay of means and in the effect produced upon the system.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 443.

  • What is God’s commission to us in regards to helping our society? Matthew 10:8.

Note: “Some will be attracted by one phase of the gospel, and some by another. We are instructed by our Lord to work in such a way that all classes will be reached. The message must go to the whole world. Our sanitariums are to help to make up the number of God’s people. We are not to establish a few mammoth institutions; for thus it would be impossible to give the patients the messages that will bring health to the soul. Small sanitariums are to be established in many places.” Medical Ministry, 327.

  • How can we accomplish God’s work with the best results? John 12:36; Matthew 5:16.

Note: “To locate our sanitariums amidst the scenes of nature would be to follow God’s plan, and the more closely this plan is followed, the more wonderfully will He work to restore suffering humanity.” Counsels on Health, 266.

“Christ’s workers are to obey His instructions implicitly. The work is God’s, and if we would bless others His plans must be followed. Self cannot be made a center; self can receive no honor. If we plan according to our own ideas, the Lord will leave us to our own mistakes.” The Desire of Ages, 369.

4 WHAT WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN

  • As we follow God’s instruction for our health, how will we be benefited individually? III John 2; I Thessalonians 5:23; Psalm 63:5.

Note: “God has bountifully provided for the sustenance and happiness of all His creatures; if His laws were never violated, if all acted in harmony with the divine will, health, peace, and happiness, instead of misery and continual evil, would be the result.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 20.

  • How does temperance in diet affect not only our physical health but also our mind? Proverbs 16:32. What warning should we take to heart? Proverbs 23:1–3, 20, 21.

Note: “It cannot be too often repeated that whatever is taken into the stomach affects not only the body, but ultimately the mind as well. Gross and stimulating food fevers the blood, excites the nervous system, and too often dulls the moral perceptions, so that reason and conscience are overborne by the sensual impulses. It is difficult, and often well-nigh impossible, for one who is intemperate in diet to exercise patience and self-control.” Child Guidance, 461.

“But if the human agent shall cooperate with divine agency, his physical and mental development will become higher and better. His mind will enlarge, and he will grow in power to do good.” The Signs of the Times, April 16, 1896.

  • What is the great purpose in God’s working for our physical and mental well-being? Proverbs 3:1–4; Isaiah 40:31.

Note: “As we study questions of truth and duty, we find that hardy, courageous workmen are needed in the Master’s service. God needs as laborers men and women who have good physical powers; clear, active minds; and decided moral principles, that cannot be shaken by temptation, nor put aside because of difficulties. There is need of persons who have a symmetrical training of all their mental, moral, and physical powers. Practical men and women are wanted—those who will teach the religion of Christ, and exemplify it in their daily life and work.” The Review and Herald, October 11, 1898.

5 WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITHOUT

  • How will others be benefited through our example if we follow God’s plan individually? I Timothy 4:11–16.

Note: “In the world all kinds of provisions have been made for the relief of suffering humanity, but the truth in its simplicity is to be brought to the suffering ones through the agency of men and women who are loyal to the commandments of God.” The Kress Collection, 13.

“I [Ellen White] am instructed to say to health reform educators: Go forward. The world needs every jot of the influence you can exert to press back the tide of moral woe. Let those who teach the third angel’s message stand true to their colors. [Romans 12:1, 2 quoted.] May the Lord arm those who labor in word and doctrine, with the clearest messages of truth. If His workers will give these messages with simplicity, assurance, and all authority, the Lord will work with them. …

“Let them take the living principle of health reform into the communities that to a large degree are ignorant of these principles.” Testimonies, vol. 9, 113, 118.

“The Saviour in His miracles revealed the power that is continually at work in man’s behalf, to sustain and to heal him. Through the agencies of nature, God is working, day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment, to keep us alive, to build up and restore us. When any part of the body sustains injury, a healing process is at once begun; nature’s agencies are set at work to restore soundness. But the power working through these agencies is the power of God. All life-giving power is from Him. When one recovers from disease, it is God who restores him.” The Ministry of Healing, 112, 113.

  • For what future event will health reform help us get the needed preparation? Psalm 91:1–10.

Note: “While the work of salvation is closing, trouble will be coming on the earth, and the nations will be angry, yet held in check so as not to prevent the work of the third angel. At that time the ‘latter rain,’ or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last plagues shall be poured out.” Maranatha, 170.

PERSONAL REVIEW QUESTIONS

1 What can individually be done to limit sickness?

2 Are all methods of healing from God?

3 What tests can we apply to a method to know its fruit?

4 What does God want to accomplish by physically healing people?

5 How will God’s health principles help during the time of the last plagues?

Customs and Disease

“Our ancestors have bequeathed to us customs and appetites which are filling the world with disease. The sins of the parents, through perverted appetite, are with fearful power visited upon the children to the third and fourth generations.” Counsels on Health, 49.

Self-Indulgence and Disease

“Many persons bring disease upon themselves by their self-indulgence. They have not lived in accordance with natural law or the principles of strict purity. Others have disregarded the laws of health in their habits of eating and drinking, dressing, or working. If God were to work a miracle in restoring these persons to health, He would be encouraging sin.” The Ministry of Healing, 227.

Satan and Disease

“Christ’s remedies cleanse the system. But Satan has tempted man to introduce into the system that which weakens the human machinery, clogging and destroying the fine, beautiful arrangements of God.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 289.
