Noah

The Judgment

In the Bible we find that God has, at different times, given life and death warnings. Moses came to Egypt and had a message from God—“Let My people go.” They rejected the message, and Pharaoh replied, “Who is God that He should tell us that?” As a result, they first lost their cattle, then their crops, and eventually their first-born. Finally, they lost their army and Pharaoh himself.

Jeremiah came to Israel with a life and death message, calling them to repent and to return to the true worship of God. They wanted to hear love spoken and thought that his message was too straight; they cast him into a miry pit. Because they rejected Him, God could not protect them; and although they claimed to be worshiping Him, going through the motions of religion, their city was completely destroyed.

Then there was John the Baptist who came with a message of repentance to Israel. They rejected the message, and what happened? Again, Jerusalem was destroyed and lay in ruins for many years. The Jewish people were scattered all over the world.

So at various times, God has had life and death messages that have been given to various groups, individuals, and nations. But twice in this world’s history, He has had a life and death message for the whole world. The first one came through Noah. “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping things, and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” Genesis 6:5–7. Conditions then must have been something like today. The Bible says that every imagination of man’s heart was evil continually.

God said that it had become unbearable to allow this to go on in the universe, and he decided that He was going to put a check on sin. But God is merciful; He did not do it overnight. “And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” Verse 3. In I Peter 3, we find that this power that pled with men was the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and that was manifested at Pentecost. It was not just human power; it was the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us that when God sends a warning message the second time, it will again be as in Noah’s time. There will be many scoffers. “Knowing this first, that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of Creation. For this they willfully forget that by the Word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same Word, reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” II Peter 3:3–7. Notice it says that they willfully forget. In other words, they choose to ignore the evidence by which they might have a knowledge of the flood. The world today is being kept in store by this same power; but this time it is not to be destroyed by water but by fire.

Now there were scoffers in Noah’s day, and there are scoffers today. But scoffers did not change the facts then, nor will they today. God has given evidence by which, if people are interested, they can find that the Bible is true. Even if the whole world disbelieves God’s Word, His Word is still going to come true!

Now, if the judgment has come, and if it is going to be preached, someone must know that it has begun. Somewhere in the Bible there must be a time pointed out as to when the judgment is going to begin. Paul tells us in Acts 17:31, “He has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness.” God has had to put the date for the judgment some place in the Bible, and we want to find it.

Daniel 7 gives us an approximate date for the beginning of the judgment, though it does not give us an exact time.

“I watched until thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire; a fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.” Daniel 7:9, 10.

Now if you will continue on to verses 11–13, you will see that this is not yet the end of the world. “I watched then [after the court had been seated] because of the sound of the pompous words which the horn was speaking.” We find in Revelation that while the horn reigned for 1,260 years, at which time it received a deadly wound, yet it would be healed and all of the world would wonder after the beast. So Daniel hears the horn speaking after the judgment has set.

There is a principle that every prophecy builds on the one before it. The prophecy of Daniel 8 covers much of the same history as Daniel 7. It begins with the rule of Medo-Persia and relates the fall of that kingdom before Alexander the Great. After giving more details about the rule of Greece, it goes over the reign of the little horn power. When it comes to the end of the little horn power, it also goes into the judgment; but this prophecy gives us something a little more specific. “And he said unto me, For two thousand three hundred days; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.” Daniel 8:14. The Jews knew what that terminology meant. The cleansing of the sanctuary was a term that had reference to the Day of Atonement, which was a period of judgment for the Jews. Because we are dealing with prophetic time, we know this to be a time period of two thousand three hundred literal years. This places the judgment a great distance into the future.

“Now it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, Gabriel, make this man understand the vision. So he came near where I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but he said to me, Understand, son of man, that the vision refers to the time of the end.” Verses 15–17.

We know that the time period stretches to the time of the end; but without a starting point, this still is not very specific.

Gabriel was told to explain the vision to Daniel, but he was not able to finish because Daniel fainted. Upon his recovery, however, Daniel kept praying and the angel came back.

“Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.” Daniel 9:20–23.

To what vision is Gabriel referring? The vision in chapter 8! This is the vision which Gabriel started to explain, but Daniel became sick before he finished explaining about the 2,300 days. “Go finish your explanation,” God said. “You did not finish.”

The only part of that vision which had not been explained was the part dealing with time. Naturally, Gabriel does not go back and talk about the powers of Greece and Medo-Persia; he starts right in where he left off, explaining the 2,300 days. “Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; … Then He shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.” Verses 24, 25, 27.

Now there is an unfortunate mistranslation here. The word determined is from the word “chathak”. In Hebrew it literally means “cut off.” The reason the translators did not translate it that way is because, failing to go back to the previous vision, they could not determine from what it was cut off. Seventy weeks must be cut off from some larger period of time. There is only one time period in the vision of the beginning and that is the 2,300 days, or years. Now he said 70 weeks are cut off from this 2,300-day period. Seventy weeks is 490 literal years. If you cut 490 from 2,300, there are 1,810 years left. In other words, of the 2,300 years, 490 were given especially to the Jewish people.

The 490-day period began with the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. This took place in 457 B.C. It then extended until A.D. 34. At that time, Stephen was stoned and persecution broke out in Jerusalem, scattering the followers of Jesus everywhere. It was then that the gospel began to go to the Gentiles. By the way, as 1844 follows 1798, it also fits the prophecy of Daniel 7.

Other than the prophecy in Daniel 8 and 9, there is no prophecy in all of the Bible that reveals a date for the judgment to begin. Daniel 7 gives the approximate date for the judgment to begin, but Daniel 8 is the only one that gives the time.

“As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be also in the days of the Son of Man.” Luke 17:26. In Noah’s day, those who heeded God’s warning, though very few in number, were saved, while those who scoffed at the message were lost. The Bible says that there is coming a judgment. It also tells us that the judgment message will be preached with a loud voice. I believe, according to Bible prophecy, that the judgment has already begun. When it is ended, the destiny of all mankind will have been decided. When the judgment is over, the pronouncement will be made, ‘He who is unjust let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.’ And behold, I am coming quickly.” Revelation 22:11, 12.

This has not yet taken place, but the time is rapidly approaching when all decisions relative to salvation will have been irrevocably made. Remember, the flood did not come immediately after Noah entered the ark and the door was closed. There were still seven days, but probation was closed. Everyone had made his final decision.

“As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away.” Matthew 24:37, 39.

When probation closes, no one is going to know, but their destiny will be fixed. People did not know that their destiny had been fixed when Noah entered the ark, but it had been fixed. In Noah’s day, God gave them 120 years. The final judgment message has already been proclaimed for a longer period than that, but God is still waiting. Do you know why He is waiting? He is waiting for us, because He loves us so much. Not everyone has made a decision yet, and God wants to give us a little more time. “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” II Peter 3:9.

Today, God’s message is going to all the world. Where you and I will be a million years from now depends on what we do with God’s message today. In Noah’s day, every person who was saved had to make a choice to be in the ark. They did not have to make a choice to be outside, as that is where they already were. There is not a man or woman who has to make a decision to be lost; we are already lost. If you would be saved, however, you have to make a decision to follow God. It is not something that just comes naturally. You have to say, “Lord, I am going to follow You all the way.”

Editorial – Are You Ready?

At 7 o’clock all 10 virgins were ready for the wedding; and probably still at 8 o’clock. But as 9 o’clock came around, the watch became too much for some, and by 10 o’clock several more were wearying. Eleven o’clock came and went, with the number still dwindling, and by 12 o’clock all had lost watch. Jesus said, “And at midnight a cry was made, Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him.” Matthew 25:6. We are living just moments before the midnight hour. Are you ready?

“The coming of the bridegroom was at midnight—the darkest hour. So the coming of Christ will take place in the darkest period of this earth’s history. The days of Noah and Lot pictured the condition of the world just before the coming of the Son of man. The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with all power and ‘with all deceivableness of unrighteousness. …’ II Thessalonians 2:9. The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 414. “The uncontrolled indulgence and consequent disease and degradation that existed at Christ’s first advent will again exist, with intensity of evil, before His second coming. … Every imagination of the thoughts of the heart will be evil continually. Upon the very verge of that fearful time we are now living.” The Desire of Ages, 122.

The final crisis is fast approaching. “It is in a crisis that character is revealed. When the earnest voice proclaimed at midnight, ‘Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him,’ and the sleeping virgins were roused from their slumbers, it was seen who had made preparation for the event. Both parties were taken unawares; but one was prepared for the emergency, and the other was found without preparation. So now, a sudden and unlooked-for calamity, something that brings the soul face to face with death, will show whether there is any real faith in the promises of God. It will show whether the soul is sustained by grace.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 412. [Emphasis added.]

What will happen when the church awakens? “It is the love of God continually transferred to man that enables him to impart light.”

“The religion of Christ means more than the forgiveness of sin; it means taking away our sins, and filling the vacuum with the graces of the Holy Spirit. It means divine illumination, rejoicing in God. It means a heart emptied of self, and blessed with the abiding presence of Christ. When Christ reigns in the soul, there is purity, freedom from sin. …

“The revelation of His own glory in the form of humanity will bring heaven so near to men that the beauty adorning the inner temple will be seen in every soul in whom the Saviour dwells. Men will be captivated by the glory of an abiding Christ. …

“While all the world is plunged in darkness, there will be light in every dwelling of the saints.” Ibid., 419, 420.

Methuselah’s Grandchildren

For many people, all that is known about Methuselah is that he lived before the flood and he lived longer than any other man, 969 years. No other descendants of Adam lived that long. The name Methuselah has come to mean something that is very long-lived, very old or ancient. Let’s review several facts about Methuselah.

Fact #1

Methuselah was the eighth generation from Adam (Genesis 5).

Fact #2

Methuselah was born when the world was still young, less than 700 years since creation.

Fact #3

Methuselah was very well acquainted with both Adam and Eve. He was 243 years old when Adam died, so his grandchildren were able to hear the story of creation and the fall from Adam himself.

Fact #4

Methuselah was the son of Enoch who was a prophet and one of the most holy men who ever lived. In Jude 14 and 15, it says, “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all those harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’ ” Growing up in a godly home, Methuselah was one of the leaders in God’s work during his lifetime.

Fact #5

At the time his father was translated (taken to heaven), Methuselah was 300 years old. If you do a little arithmetic, you will find that Enoch was translated just 57 years after Adam died.

Because of his long life, Methuselah witnessed many things during his lifetime. When he was about 369 years old, Noah was born. Though he had many grandchildren, the only one that we know the name of is Noah. In Genesis 5:25, 26 it says, “Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters.” Even if he did not father sons or daughters during the last 300 years of his life, he could have had a lot of children in three or four hundred years. In those days when men lived such a long time, the families were very large. His sons and daughters got married, had children, and became a multitude of people. That was Noah’s generation.

Fact #6

When Methuselah was 849 years old, God told Noah there was going to be a flood in 120 years. This was not news for Methuselah who had known for over 500 years that there was going to be a flood; he just did not know the exact date until Noah told him. In Patriarchs and Prophets, 85 we are told that, “Through holy angels God revealed to Enoch [his father] His purpose to destroy the world by a flood, and He also opened more fully to him the plan of redemption. By the spirit of prophecy He carried him down through the generations that should live after the Flood, and showed him the great events connected with the second coming of Christ.” Over 500 years before, Enoch declared the prophecy that the Lord was going to come in judgment and that He would no longer put up with what they were doing (Jude 14).

Fact #7

Methuselah was the first man on record to go to the funeral of his own son who died of natural causes while the father was still alive. His son Lamech died when he was 964 years of age. Very few men have lived a sadder life than Methuselah.

A few other interesting facts about Methuselah are:

  1. He was a gospel worker and spoke of the coming Redeemer. He was one of the most renowned gospel preachers and leaders of God’s faithful people in those days. He was a preacher of righteousness. See Christ’s Object Lessons, 126.
  2. Methuselah aided Noah in building the ark. Somebody might ask, “Then why didn’t he get on the ark?” He died in the very year of the flood. The flood occurred 1,656 years after creation and that was the very year that Methuselah died. See Patriarchs and Prophets, 92.
  3. Ellen White tells us that Methuselah aided Noah in warning the antediluvians. He told them the present truth that there was going to be a flood and they needed to get into the ark. See Ibid. “This hope of redemption through the advent of the Son of God as Saviour and King, has never become extinct in the hearts of men. From the beginning there have been some whose faith has reached out beyond the shadows of the present to the realities of the future. Adam, Seth, Enoch, Methuselah, Noah, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—through these and other worthies the Lord has preserved the precious revealings of His will.” Prophets and Kings, 682, 683.

Methuselah’s many grandchildren could easily have been numbered in the hundreds and were contemporaries of Noah. We often do not realize that many of the people who heard Noah preach were his own relatives, the grandchildren of Methuselah. Usually, when we think about the flood we think about the descendants of Cain, who would have been in the great majority. Cain was Adam’s oldest son, and he was probably already married and having children before Seth was born, creating a generation jump between the two brothers.

In Patriarchs and Prophets, 90–104, Ellen White says this about the descendants of Cain:

  • God’s bounties were used to glorify themselves in constructing fabulous, beautiful habitations and they vied with one another as to who could build the most beautiful houses.
  • They reveled in scenes of pleasure.
  • They reveled in scenes of wickedness.
  • This is astonishing, being so close to creation, but the descendants of Cain denied the existence of God, even when Methuselah was right there among them and could tell them how the world came into existence. The Garden of Eden was also still on earth until the flood.
  • Nature was adored and worshiped.
  • Human genius was glorified. There were many geniuses and very skillful people.
  • The descendants of Cain all became idolaters and were involved in sensual worship.
  • Creatures were worshiped in place of God.
  • As a consequence of idolatry, the understanding of the character of God was lost.
  • Every conceivable sin was committed. Justice was trampled in the dust, and there were people who were oppressed, crying out to heaven for vengeance upon their persecutors.
  • Polygamy was freely practiced.
  • The rights of neither the marriage relation nor property were regarded.
  • The descendants of Cain were flesh-food eaters. Flesh food did not start after the flood. The descendants of Cain were flesh-food eaters, although God had never given permission to the human race to eat flesh food before the flood.
  • The descendants of Cain had no respect for life.

As mentioned previously, Methuselah’s father was Enoch.

Enoch lived apart, but: “He [Enoch] did not make his abode with the wicked. … He placed himself and his family where the atmosphere would be as pure as possible. Then at times he went forth to the inhabitants of the world with his God-given message. Every visit he made to the world was painful to him. He saw and understood something of the leprosy of sin. After proclaiming his message, he always took back with him to his place of retirement some who had received the warning. Some of these became overcomers and died before the Flood came. But some had lived so long in the corrupting influence of sin that they could not endure righteousness.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 1, 1088.

Methuselah was Enoch’s oldest son and, as the custom was in those days, when the father died, the oldest son took the place of the father as the spiritual leader of the family. After Enoch was translated, Methuselah became the spiritual leader of the movement that Enoch had started. Methuselah himself was a righteous and holy man. He was a religious leader and teacher. Therefore, we would expect that at least some of his grandchildren would be God-fearing.

Remember, those who had accepted Enoch’s message came out. The word church comes from the Greek word ecclesia, and that word means called out.

Enoch called the people out from these wicked cities. In other words, Enoch started what we would call today a revival and reformation movement or a home church movement. The sad part of the story is that Methuselah lived to see the complete collapse of the home church movement that his father had started. What would have made this development intensely painful for Methuselah was that a large number of those who backslid into worldly living were his own grandchildren.

The church is the people called out by God. Enoch called out people. Jesus called out people. They were called out of the evil of the world. Christianity is calling people out from the evil of the world today, and the people who choose to come out compose the church. Only one or two of Methuselah’s grandchildren were saved in the ark. The rest of them drowned in the flood, right along with the descendants of Cain. It was awful that the descendants of Cain drowned, but it is even more awful when you think of the fact that these people, the descendants of Methuselah, had come from a holy line. Their great-grandfather was Enoch; Methuselah was their grandfather, and he was a holy man. These people had been taught the truth, and they had, at one time, believed the truth. There were many who at first, when called out, received the warning. What happened?

In chapter 7 of Patriarchs and Prophets, Ellen White gives descriptions about these very people. Methuselah’s grandchildren, the great-grandchildren of Enoch, had been part of a revival and reformation movement. These were the people who had been called out and had been in the church. They had been living holy lives and were not part of the evil of the world. Yet, except for Noah and his wife, they all drowned in the flood. About these people who at first received the warning, she says:

  1. Their faith was tested.
  2. They did not have a true repentance.
  3. They were unwilling to renounce their sins. In other words, they were not willing to quit all sin.
  4. They failed to endure the trial or test, which is very similar to number one.

Point number one says their faith was tested. Point number four was that they did not endure the test. What does it mean to have your faith tested? Has your faith been tested of late? How is a person’s faith tested? These people believed that the flood was coming in just a little over a hundred years. They had a hundred years to have their faith tested, and by the time the flood came, they had all failed.

There are two very common ways that, I believe, faith is tested. The descendants of Cain, who were the largest part of the world’s population, opposed their faith, but that was not the biggest test. Their faith was tested by intermarriage. The descendants of Seth intermarried the descendants of Cain (Genesis 6) resulting in one of the reasons for the flood. Eventually the grandchildren of Methuselah were drawn in and their faith was tested, not so much by the descendants of Cain but by the other descendants of Seth, the other grandchildren of Methuselah.

Their faith was not tested as much by the people out in the world but by the people in the church. After intermarriage, the situation in the church changed; what people originally had thought was wrong, they no longer thought it wrong. Their standard of morality changed. Ellen White said they did not have true repentance; they were unwilling to renounce their sins, and they were not willing to quit all sin. If there is any sin in your life that you are not willing to give up, you are in the same situation as Methuselah’s grandchildren. These people believed a flood was coming and started to get ready for it, but before it started to rain, they were not ready to enter the ark. They were overcome by the prevailing unbelief and finally joined their former associates in rejecting the message. The standard of morality was lowered. Human beings are social creatures and do not like to live alone. They want to be with a group and to be accepted by the group. The devil knows too well how to use that principle, and Methuselah’s grandchildren were overcome with the prevailing unbelief by finally joining their former associates in rejecting the message.

There was a lot of opposition and social pressure on these people. “Some were deeply convicted, and would have heeded the words of warning; but there were so many to jest and ridicule, that they partook of the same spirit, resisted the invitations of mercy, and were soon among the boldest and most defiant scoffers; for none are so reckless and go to such lengths in sin as do those who have once had light, but have resisted the convicting Spirit of God.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 95. Notice, these are people in the church. These are not the descendants of Cain. These are the people who once had light but drifted away from it.

Some of them were worshipping God with idols and “they ceased to realize the holiness of His character, or the sacred, unchanging nature of His requirements.” Ibid., 96. They did not realize that His law could not be changed. “As sin became general, it appeared less and less sinful, and they finally declared divine law was no longer in force.” Ibid., 95. Sin became so prevalent everywhere in the world, including the church, that, finally, it did not look so bad anymore. As sin became general, it appeared less and less sinful, until they finally declared that the Divine law was no longer in force. They believed it was contrary to the character of God to punish transgression, so they thought Noah’s message was just a delusion.

  1. More confidence was placed in science than in the Word of God. One of the biggest problems we have today is that there are people who have more confidence in science than in the Word of God. This is one of the reasons why the gospel in general is so unsuccessful with highly educated people.
  • Some of the things they said were:
  • “It has never rained.” That was true!
  • “God protected Cain after he (Cain) killed Abel.”
  • “God put a mark on him and would not let anybody kill him. Would God kill the whole world? He would not even let anybody kill Cain.”
  • “God only does good. God never does evil.”
  • “God is in the salvation business, not in the destruction business.”
  • “Have you ever thought of the fact that there is not enough water in the whole world to cause a worldwide flood?”
  • “Do you not know, we have talked to Adam?” Some of the older ones had. “We have talked to Seth. Don’t you know that God is a God of love? God is not a God to just destroy everything that He made.”

Hitler understood this. If you tell somebody something enough times, they will believe it. That is why the educated people believe in evolution, because they have been told about it ever since they were little children in school. They have heard it thousands of times, seen it thousands of times on television, and read it in books. That is one of the reasons we need to have Christian schools.

They talked about all these things among themselves over and over until they believed them, and they said, “Noah is deluded.” There were probably some people who said, “If God was going to do something like that, He would not tell just one person. He would not tell some woman who had only a second or third grade education. He would tell more people than that.” Have you ever heard that argument?

  1. Another thing that got them Jesus mentioned in Luke 17. It was a time of intense worldliness. John said that they are of the world, and they talk about the world. Our speech is about God. A person who is of God listens to us. We have different things to talk about (1 John 4:5, 6). Ellen White says they continued their festivities and their gluttonous feast. They ate and drank, planted and built and laid their plans in reference to advantages they hoped to gain in the future; they went to greater lengths in wickedness. See Patriachs and Prophets, 97.

Remember, this is not referring to the descendants of Cain, but to Methuselah’s grandchildren. They became hardened by persistent rejection of light so that the truth only made a momentary impression. By the way, is there any spiritual light that you have but that you have not accepted? Are you not living up to what you know is right? If you know something is right and you are not doing it, your heart will become hardened.

There are several lessons we should learn from Methuselah’s grandchildren.

First lesson: Will your faith endure the opposition of family and friends who go back from where they were? Notice what Jesus said: “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” Matthew 10:34–38.

That was the situation in which Methuselah was. He had to watch a few of his children, his grandchildren, and the entire revival and reformation movement that Enoch had started collapse. It must have been intensely sad and painful. He had to walk alone. Noah walked alone!

Second lesson: Have you decided to renounce all sin or has the devil convinced you that it is impossible? That is what the devil has been trying to do for thousands of years. One of the things God intended to teach the world by translating Enoch was to show that His law could be kept and he did do it. The devil is still trying to convince people of this lie. The apostle John said, “Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.” I John 3:7–10.

Third lesson: Would you remain faithful to the truth if your church family, your children, and your grandchildren went back out into the world? That is exactly what Methuselah had to do. I want to tell you something encouraging. I do not know how many people I have met who have said something to the effect, “Well, if my children are not going to be in heaven, I do not want to go either.” They will not be there either, as we read in Matthew 10. Jesus said that if you do not love Him more than son or daughter, more than father or mother, you are not worthy of Him and are not going to heaven (verse 37). But, there is some good news. Though, like many families today, Methuselah’s family was fractured, God is going to put his family back together. His immediate grandchildren are not going to be saved because Jesus said that a man’s foes or enemies would be those of his own household (Matthew 10:36). But someday his family will be put back together again and you may be part of it.

Isaiah says, “ ‘Sing, O barren, you who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married woman,’ says the Lord. ‘Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited.’ ” Isaiah 54:1–3.

This is talking about all the people who are in Methuselah’s situation. He lost his whole family except for Noah and his wife. He lost nearly everything. In the Kingdom of Heaven there will be people from all ages who have come from this kind of a situation. Their families have been absolutely fractured and shattered because many members of their families went into sin, would not accept the gospel, and are going to be destroyed. But God is going to put the families of these fractured people who are saved back together again.

Does sin not appear sinful anymore to you because you have seen it so much? Remember Methuselah’s grandchildren. The natural law of the mind is that by beholding we become changed. Examine carefully the things you are reading, what you are looking at, and to what you are listening. Never forget that what you are doing in your spare time could determine your eternal destiny.

We have been called out of the world. We have to live in the world, but we do not need to be part of the evil of this world. However, if we are looking at it, watching it, and listening to it, it is going to have an effect on us that eventually we will not think it is so bad, and we will lose our soul.

Remember Methuselah’s grandchildren!

Diet, As It Was In The Days Of Noah

Disease is everywhere. America is filled with chronic invalids. Disease has caused the health-care cost in America to sky-rocket. Look at the mess we are in! Obesity affects 34 million Americans and puts them at serious medical risk. It increases the chances for heart-disease, cancer of all kinds, diabetes, arthritis, and gall-bladder disease. A recent survey found that 40 to 50 percent of Americans between 35 and 59 years old were ” diet -ing.”

Then you have the problem of diabetes. There are an estimated 30 million diabetics in the world, and one-half of them are right here within the United States of America. This disease and its complications are responsible for 300,000 deaths a year. This disease is virtually non-existent in eighty percent of the world’s population because they cannot afford it! They cannot afford the steaks, the hamburgers; they cannot afford the hot dogs; they cannot afford the milk-shakes and the ice cream and all the fries and the pie.

Then we have a disease called hypertension or high blood-pressure that affects 35 million Americans within this country and another 25 million which are border-line hypertensive. Hypertension is the most important contributing factor in the 500,000 stroke cases reported each year.

Second only to cardiovascular disease, as the leading cause of death in the United States, is cancer. It accounts for twenty-three percent of all deaths with 514,000 fatalities each year. The latest survey just came out from the American Cancer Society showing how many new cases of cancer were seen each year. Do you know who leads the record across the nation? California! We can expect one in three to die with cancer within that state according to the records of 1994. It says that by the year 2000 one-third of all deaths in America will be caused by cancer.

And when there are no more answers or explanations for all the auto-immune diseases that are plaguing our country today, the specialists assign the name, syndrome, which actually means, we don’t know what is wrong. So we see Americans suffering from chronic-fatigue syndrome, irritable-bowl syndrome, sudden infant-death syndrome, and attention-deficit disorders.

Why all the disease? In July, 1988, a 712 page report was published by the Surgeon General of the United States of America, C. Everett Coop. The information that came out in this article dealt with diet and disease. The main conclusion was that Americans consume an excessive amount of food—specifically a diet that is too high in fat, calories, sugar, salt, and alcohol, and too low in fiber rich foods. His solution was to eat a high fiber starch-based diet filled with fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

Today Americans are eating food that is filled with fat, filled with protein, filled with environmental contaminants, and this is responsible for many of the diseases and the deaths we see in the United States today. It is true, fatty foods are killing us! It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the cause of the problem. How about one scripture?

“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.” Matthew 24:38.

In verse 37 we read, “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Do you believe Jesus Christ is coming soon? I do. Since He is coming soon, the prophecies of Christ should be real. And Christ said, if you would study your Bible, you would know what is happening in this world.

In Luke 21:31 it says Jesus says: “So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.” In other words, there are going to be certain signs within the world that will let you know He is ready to come.

And then He says, “Verily, I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.” Verse 32. And in verse 34 He tells us, “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged [or filled up] with surfeiting, and drunkeness, and the cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” Surfeiting and drunkeness were the words that Christ used. What is surfeiting? It’s an overabundance of food; drunkenness is an overabundance of drink. He is trying to tell us is that in the days just prior to His coming, the world is going to be eating too much, drinking too much, and being too concerned about themselves.

Phillipians 3:19 says: “Whose God is their belly.” They are so concerned about their own desires that they are not going to be ready for His coming!

The problem Jesus was addressing was over-indulgence. Appetite was gaining the mastery over the people. He warns us, “For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.” Luke 21:35. There is going to be a snare, and that snare is your appetite. Nobody escapes the temptation on appetite.

Christ urges us, “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” According to the Word of God, there is going to be over-eating and over-drinking, and today we see obesity, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, and people dying from over-indulgence of appetite. Do these things have something to do with being prepared for the coming of Christ? What does He mean, “Stand before the Son of man?” Does my appetite have anything to do with that?

In Isaiah 22:12 we read: “And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth.” It was a time of afflicting their souls.

The Lord is calling His people right now to look at themselves. But notice what the state of the world is according to the prophecy of Isaiah. “And behold joy and gladness—” everything’s fine! —”slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.” Verse 13. Leave me alone, man! I’m going to eat, I’m going to die someday, and I want to enjoy my life until I go. He is saying, The people should be preparing for My coming to stand in front of Me when I come. But yet they are eating flesh, drinking. It’s a party! We are eating like kings and queens everyday. We are slaves to our appetites.

Do you spend as much time studying your Bible as you do looking in the refrigerator? What is more important today? The Bible is! When is the last time you opened it?

I have not eaten meat in ten years, and the reason I don’t is because when my wife gave birth to our little baby girl, I began to do my home work—I began to study like never before. As I researched and looked for the best diet that I could possibly give to my child, I prayed and said, Lord, what is the best for my little girl? And He said, How about if I give it to you in one scripture? “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Genesis 1:29. You mean to tell me that I need to become a vegetarian?

In Numbers 11 we find that God has led the children of Israel out of Egypt and He is trying to lead them into the promised land. It says in Numbers 11:1 that they complained and it displeased the Lord. In verse 4 it says that they “fell a-lusting.” The children of Israel were wandering in the desert for forty years and were complaining and lusting. What are they lusting for? Flesh! And what are they murmuring to God about? What didn’t they like? They did not like the manna, they did not like the diet that God had provided for His people.

It is interesting that as they ate manna-pizzas and the manna-cotti and manna-sandwiches and all these foods God made them—I do not read where they were sick! God was trying to march them into the promised land on a vegetarian diet—a very simple diet. But they complained. The Bible says that they lusted. They said, “But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.” Numbers 11:6.

Exodus 16:31 says, “And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was coriander seed, white; and the taste thereof was like wafers made with honey.” So God provided the diet that was best for His people and out of His goodness and His care for them, said, Do not eat of the flesh-pots of Egypt, they are not good for you.

Again in Numbers 11 we find that Moses is very upset. He asks, how can I handle all these people myself? I am trying to lead them into the promised land and they want to eat the diet of Egypt. Is God trying to lead us into the heavenly land today and we are eating the diet of America? “And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and you shall eat flesh . . . Therefore the Lord will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; but even a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils.” Verses 18–20. In other words, He knew that they were going to sit there and scarf the stuff up.

“And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought forth quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp . . . And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp. And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague” Verses 31–33.

The food they lusted for proved to be a curse. The story goes on in Psalms 78:26–29: “He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by His power He brought in the south wind. He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea. And He let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. So they did eat, and were filled: for He gave them their own desire.”

God does not put a chain around your refrigerator; He does not put your tires flat when you want to go to McDonalds and get yourself a couple Big Macs—God does not do that. He lets you have your own desire, because He is a God of love and respects your choices.

But it says here, “They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, the wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.” Verses 30, 31. Isn’t it interesting that the Lord uses the words “fattest of them?” Perhaps He is saying, The one who had the greatest appetite, who was more of the glutton, the one that just ate, ate, ate, and ate—was the one that was smitten.

There is a point here. The scenario of what is going on is that God is trying to lead us into the Promised Land and we are murmuring for the diet of Egypt—for flesh. Yet God knows that the diet of Egypt, as with the standard American diet, is not the best for His people as He leads them into the Better Land.

Does your diet have anything to do with your state of mind? The children of Israel were lusting after the flesh. In other words, the flesh was controlling their reasoning to the extent that they would not follow God’s way. The Bible says, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” Galatians 5:17. Have you ever had that problem? Knowing what is right, yet your body and flesh is pulling you in another direction and you cannot do what is right?

The apostle Paul knew this very well. He says in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself might be a cast-away.” In others words, I do not want my flesh pulling me in a way that is contrary to the Word of God. I want my reason sanctified by His divine will. That is what a Christian is.

“As the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . . . They were eating and drinking.” Matthew 24:37, 38. It is not only that the time is short for us, but somebody else knows that the time is very, very short too. “Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” Revelation 12:12. Christ is coming soon! And we do not have much time. Do you want to stand ready before God? Is your flesh controlling your mind? That is the big question: Is your flesh controlling your mind?

The devil is working in a thousand ways and in a thousand places. His efforts are ten-fold greater today, knowing that his time is short, to destroy as many people as he can. He is using our food supply, he is using the environment, he is using the water, he is using the chemicals you put under your arm, on your lips, and on your face. He is doing it through your clothing, he is doing it every way he can to kill you! He uses flesh foods, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, drugs, sugar, whatever he can to stimulate your fleshly desires and to cloud your mind.

“As the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . . . They were eating and drinking.” Matthew 24:37, 38. They are not prepared!

Paul gave us some of the most precious counsel in the Word of God with regards to this. He said, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice.” Romans 12:1. We are to present a living sacrifice—not a sick and diseased one!

There are things that we can be doing as a people. Do not make manure hamburgers, because there is more bacteria in the meat than there is in the manure of some of these animals today. Put away the coffee, put away the cigarettes, put away the high-fat diet, put away all the candy with the sugar that is rotting your teeth. Put it away! The next time you find that you cannot put away what you know is harmful to your body, watch out, because your stomach is controlling your head.

What did Paul say when he finished? He said, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2. Do you think that the Israelites, wandering in the wilderness, feeding on the quail until it came out of their nostrils, were giving glory to God?

Were they doing it His way? No they were not!

What do you want to do? It is your choice to make that decision. Do you want to serve God?
Our diet is killing us. I want you to think about this—the battle between the Spirit and the flesh. They are opposed.

I want you to think about this scripture that you have probably never looked at in this way. “Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” This is what it says about His diet. “Butter and honey shall He eat.” Very simple—remember, Daniel had pulse and water, just two items. John the Baptist had locust and honey, just two items. Jesus had a very temperate diet here, “butter and honey shall He eat, that He may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.” Isaiah 7:14, 15. There it is! A very temperate, simple diet is necessary. A temperate life is necessary for us to make right moral decisions.

As I look at that statement in the Bible, I go back to Galatians 5:17. It says, “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” But notice verse 16: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Isn’t that beautiful?

Does your diet affect your spiritual life? Does your diet affect your moral decisions? If I am not exercising and I am eating a high-fat diet, I am going to be sluggish and tired, my blood is not going to be circulating right, I am not going to get the oxygen to my mind. How can I make a proper moral decision?

Can diet affect your spirituality? “That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.” Ephesians 3:16. Where is He dwelling? In my arm? He is dwelling within the inner man, within my mind! He’s going to put His character and His life within me. It says “That Christ may dwell in your heart by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that you ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” Verses 17–20.

“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30.

1 RESPECTING GOD’S METHODS

  • What are God’s tools for the perfecting of His children? I Corinthians 12:28.

“In sending forth His ministers our Saviour gave gifts unto men, for through them He communicates to the world the words of eternal life. This is the means which God has ordained for the perfecting of the saints in knowledge and true holiness. The work of Christ’s servants is not merely to preach the truth; they are to watch for souls as they that must render account to God. They are to reprove, rebuke, exhort with long-suffering and doctrine.” Testimonies, vol. 5, 237.

  • How long will God use this method? Ephesians 4:13, 15. What is our responsibility? James 1:22.

2 HEALTH AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • How does physical health relate to character development? I Thessalonians 5:23; I Corinthians 3:16, 17; 6:19, 20.

Note: “Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic reform is to secure the highest possible development of mind and soul and body. … Obedience to them will promote our happiness in this life, and will aid us in a preparation for the life to come.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 23.

“You need clear, energetic minds, in order to appreciate the exalted character of the truth, to value the atonement, and to place the right estimate upon eternal things. If you pursue a wrong course, and indulge in wrong habits of eating, and thereby weaken the intellectual powers, you will not place that high estimate upon salvation and eternal life which will inspire you to conform your life to the life of Christ.” Ibid., 47.

  • How should we respond to all of God’s health instruction? Why? Proverbs 4:20–22.

3 HEALTH AND PRAYER

  • What relationship exists between following God’s health principles and having our prayers answered? Proverbs 28:9; 30:5.

  • Can we properly train our children and youth in our homes and churches while disregarding any of God’s instruction? What will the results be? Psalm 119:138; Galatians 6:7.

You have seen that it has much to do with the influence you exert in your families. It has much to do with molding the characters of your children. …

You place upon your tables butter, eggs, and meat, and your children partake of them. “If light is turned from in one case, it will be disregarded in another. It is just as much sin to violate the laws of our being as to break one of the ten commandments, for we cannot do either without breaking God’s law. We cannot love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength while we are loving our appetites, our tastes, a great deal better than we love the Lord.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 45.

“I saw that the reason why God did not hear the prayers of His servants for the sick among us more fully was, that He could not be glorified in so doing while they were violating the laws of health.” Ibid., 25, 26.

4 FURTHER EDUCATION

  • By what other means can we honor our Creator? I Timothy 6:11.

Note: “The greatest evidence of the power of Christianity that can be presented to the world is a well-ordered, well-disciplined family. This will recommend the truth as nothing else can, for it is a living witness of its practical power upon the heart.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 304.

“There is no education to be gained higher than that given to the early disciples, and which is revealed to us through the word of God. To gain the higher education means to follow this word implicitly; it means to walk in the footsteps of Christ, to practice His virtues. It means to give up selfishness and to devote the life to the service of God. Higher education calls for something greater, something more divine, than the knowledge to be obtained merely from books. It means a personal, experimental knowledge of Christ; it means emancipation from ideas, from habits and practices, that have been gained in the school of the prince of darkness, and which are opposed to loyalty to God. It means to overcome stubbornness, pride, selfishness, worldly ambition, and unbelief. It is the message of deliverance from sin.” Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 11, 12.

  • What will be the result of this type of education? Proverbs 22:6; III John 4.

Note: “Higher than the highest human thought can reach is God’s ideal for His children. Godliness—godlikeness—is the goal to be reached. Before the student there is opened a path of continual progress. He has an object to achieve, a standard to attain, that includes everything good, and pure, and noble. He will advance as fast and as far as possible in every branch of true knowledge. But his efforts will be directed to objects as much higher than mere selfish and temporal interests as the heavens are higher than the earth.” Education, 18, 19.

“It is the privilege of every soul to be a living channel through which God can communicate to the world the treasures of His grace, the unsearchable riches of Christ. There is nothing that Christ desires so much as agents who will represent to the world His Spirit and character.” Christ’s Object Lessons, 419.

5 PATRIARCHAL EXAMPLES

  • In what ways did Enoch and Noah leave us examples to follow in these last days? Hebrews 11:5, 7; II Corinthians 4:18.

He did not become a hermit, shutting himself entirely from the world; for he had a work to do for God in the world. “It was through Noah’s consistent faith and works combined that condemned the world. He not only preached the present truth appropriate for that time, but he acted every sermon. 1 THE FAITH OF ABEL

He had looked upon the celestial city. He had seen the King in His glory in the midst of Zion. The greater the existing iniquity, the more earnest was his longing for the home of God. While still on earth, he dwelt by faith in the realms of light.

“ ‘Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God’ [Matthew 5:8]. For three hundred years Enoch had been seeking purity of heart, that he might be in harmony with heaven. For three centuries he had walked with God. Day by day he had longed for a closer union; nearer and nearer had grown the communion, until God took him to Himself. He had stood at the threshold of the eternal world, only a step between him and the land of the blest; and now the portals opened, the walk with God, so long pursued on earth, continued, and he passed through the gates of the holy city. …

“To such communion God is calling us. As was Enoch’s, so must be their holiness of character who shall be redeemed from among men at the Lord’s second coming.” Gospel Workers, 52–54.

4 THE DAYS OF NOAH

This is the marriage of which Christ speaks when He says that before the flood they were ‘marrying and giving in marriage’ [Matthew 24:38].

5 THE FAITH OF NOAH

Inspiration – Days of Noah

This is inspired testimony respecting the state of society in the days of Noah—an accurate description of the generation that perished in the waters of the flood. “God saw that the wickedness of man was great,” and that the “earth was filled with violence” [Genesis 6:5, first part, 11]. The fear of God had well-nigh died out of the hearts of the children of men. Lawlessness was rife, and almost every conceivable sin was practiced. The wickedness of men was open and daring, and the cries of the oppressed reached to heaven. Justice was trampled in the dust. The strong not only disregarded the rights of the weak, but forced them to commit deeds of violence and crime.

The wickedness of man was great; but this was not all. “Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” [Genesis 6:5, last part]. The purposes and desires of the heart were corrupt from day to day.

Many flatter themselves that in this enlightened age men are superior in knowledge and talent to those who lived before the flood; but those who think this do not rightly estimate the physical and mental strength of that long-lived race. In those early ages, growth was slow and firm. Men did not, as at the present time, flash into maturity early, and quickly exhaust their vital forces. Their minds were of a high order, and were strong and clear. Had these men, with their rare powers to conceive and execute, devoted themselves to the service of God, they would have made their Creator’s name a praise in the earth, and would have answered the purpose for which he gave them being. But they failed to do this. “All flesh had corrupted his way on the earth” [Genesis 6:12]. There were many giants, men of great stature and strength, renowned for wisdom, skillful in devising the most cunning and wonderful work; but in proportion to their skill and mental ability was their great guilt because of unbridled iniquity.

These antediluvians had received many and rich gifts from God; but they used the bounties granted them by Divine Providence to minister to their own selfish desires, and turned them into a curse by fixing their thoughts and affections upon the gifts instead of the Giver. They had goodly trees of great variety and almost without limit; but of these they made temples, where they reveled in scenes of pleasure and wickedness. Gold, silver, and precious stones were in abundance; but they used these also to gratify the desires of their own proud hearts.

These sinful men could not deny the existence of God; but they would have been glad to know that there was no God to witness their deeds and call them to account. They delighted to put Him out of their minds. The children were not taught to fear and reverence their Maker. They grew up unrestrained in their desires, and destitute of principle or conscience. Their minds were absorbed in devising means to rival one another in pleasure and vice; and they neither looked nor cared for a heaven beyond this world.

Yet the whole world was not corrupt. There were a few faithful witnesses for God. Methuselah, Enoch, Noah, and many others labored to keep alive on the earth the knowledge of the true God, and to stay the tide of moral evil. God declared that his Spirit should not always strive with guilty men, but that their probation should be a hundred and twenty years; if they did not then cease to pollute with their sins the world and its rich treasures, he would blot them from his creation; and these faithful ministers of righteousness gave the warning message. But the light was not heeded, and the preaching of Noah and his co-laborers impressed hearts less and less. Many, even of the worshipers of God, had not sufficient moral power to stand against the corrupting influences of the age, and were beguiled into sin by the bewitching allurements that were constantly before them.

But at length the patience of God was exhausted. By their obstinate resistance to the reproofs of conscience and the warnings of God’s messengers, that generation filled up the measure of their iniquity, and became ripe for destruction. Because mankind had perverted his gifts, God would deface and destroy the things with which he delighted to bless them; he would sweep away the beasts of the field, and the rich vegetation which furnished such an abundant supply of food, and transform the fair earth into one vast scene of desolation and ruin. And guilty man should utterly perish in the overthrow of the world upon which he had set his affections.

Is not this picture of the antediluvian world reproduced in our time? Man has not grown more pure and holy since the days of Noah. His heart has not changed; it is still “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” [Jeremiah 17:9]. The intense worldliness of that generation is exceeded by that of the generation now living. Money is lavishly spent for costly houses, fine horses and carriages, and other expensive articles of luxury and display, while the poor suffer for food and clothing. The fear of God is banished from the hearts of the children of men, and his law is treated with indifference and neglect.

Said Christ: “As in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” [Matthew 24:38, 39]. God did not condemn the antediluvians for eating and drinking; he had given them the fruits of the earth in great abundance to supply their physical wants. Their sin consisted in taking these gifts without gratitude to the Giver, and debasing themselves by indulging appetite without restraint.

It was lawful for them to marry. Marriage was in God’s order; it was one of the first institutions which he established. He gave special directions concerning this ordinance, clothing it with sanctity and beauty; but these directions had been forgotten, and marriage had been perverted to minister to passion. The godly mingled with the depraved, and became like them in spirit and in deeds. “The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose” [Genesis 6:2].

A similar state of things exists now in relation to marriage. Marriages are formed between the godly and the ungodly, because inclination governs in the selection of husband or wife. The parties do not ask counsel of God, nor have his glory in view. Christianity ought to have a controlling, sanctifying influence upon the marriage relation; but husband and wife are not united by Christian principle; uncontrolled passion lies at the foundation of many of the marriages that are contracted at the present time.

In Noah’s day there were men who laughed to scorn his words of warning. They said that nature was governed by fixed laws which made a flood impossible, and that if there were any truth in what he said, the great men, the wise and prudent, would understand the matter. There was total disbelief in Noah’s testimony in regard to the coming judgments; but this unbelief did not prevent or hinder the gathering storm. At the appointed time, “the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened” [Genesis 7:11], and the earth was washed of its corruption. Only those who found shelter in the ark were saved.

Reader, another storm is coming. The earth will again be swept by the desolating wrath of God, and again sin and sinners will be destroyed. … Says the psalmist: “Because thou hast made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation, there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” [Psalm 91:9–11].

5 EFFECTIVE COMMUNION WITH GOD

How to Live in a Corrupt World

One of these days soon, we will not have to deal with the problems of this world any longer but live in peace and harmony in heaven. Jesus gave some interesting insights describing the condition of the world just before He returns. “But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew 24:37–39.

The book of Genesis describes the condition of the people that caused God to send a flood to destroy them. It will be the same just before He returns the second time. Genesis 4:16, 17 gives the genealogy of Cain after he killed his brother, Abel. “And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.” The marriage institution, that began in the Garden of Eden, was under attack when Lamech “had two wives” (verse 19). Taking two wives was not in God’s order, and we read a few verses later that he killed a man because he did him wrong (verse 23).

Ellen White wrote in The Signs of the Times, October 6, 1898: “Had man co-operated with God, there would have been no Cain-worshippers.” This is significant to our study on what it was like in the days of Noah. When Cain brought his offering to worship God, he took no heed to God’s instruction, but brought the fruits of his own labor. This is one of the reasons that caused the persecution of Abel by Cain. Abel “was a righteous man” (Hebrews 11:4) who did exactly what God told him to do. He brought an offering of an animal, as God had instructed, and sacrificed it. Cain came with an offering of his fruits and vegetables—the works of his own hands. Most of the world today worship as did Cain, trying to be saved by their own works.

Sabbath keepers are often accused of trying to save themselves by keeping the law of God. It was God who gave the commandments, giving specific instructions and leaving no room to doubt. The fourth commandment does not say, “Man, you worship Me, but you can just do it on whatever day that you would think convenient.” No, God specified the day; He said the seventh day is the Sabbath. When we obey God by keeping the Sabbath day we are simply doing what God has asked us to do. Those who worship on Sunday are following man, because it was man who changed the day of worship from the Sabbath to Sunday. In fact, they are Cain worshippers.

“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” Genesis 6:1–4. Often the focus of the events of Noah’s day is about the wicked acts, but some things were happening that we have not yet seen. In fact, I believe there was a revival in Noah’s day before the flood came.

The term “sons of God” is designated for God’s church. This is translated in another version as nephilim. There is a difference between the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” who were the worldlings, the Cain worshippers. These were the heathen who went out from the presence of the Lord.

Notice in Genesis 4:25, 26 it says, “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.” Seth means the one who took the place of. When people began to call on the name of the Lord, there was a revival. You can read about it in Zephaniah 3. I believe Zephaniah 3 is actually a prophecy of what is going to happen again.

Remember, Jesus said, “As it was in the days of Noah.” Before the second coming of Jesus it will be the same. I believe that there is going to be a reformation in God’s church. As in Genesis 6, when the sons of God went after the daughters of men, they became intermingled and married. The fruit of these marriages was the children. Genesis 6:4 described them as giants (nephilim).

Let us examine this word nephilim. The same word occurs in Numbers 13:33. Numbers 13 tells about the twelve spies who went into the land of Canaan to give a report of what they saw there. Ten of the spies gave an evil report, and when Caleb and Joshua said they could take the land, the people were ready to stone them. The ten that gave the wicked report said, “And there we saw the giants [nephilim], … and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” The root word of nephilim is nephil, which means to cause to fall.

Let me explain this. When Israel was up against the Philistines, Goliath came out and taunted them every day for forty days. Goliath was from Gath, of the tribe of nephilim, called Anak. The Bible says that when Goliath came out he caused all Israel, from King Saul clear down to the last person, to fear.

In the days of Noah, the nephilim were the ones who used terror to put fear into the hearts of other people to cause them to submit to them. Today, they would be called terrorists.

Jesus said that before He comes, conditions will be the same as in the days of Noah. There are people today who use violence to force others to fall down and submit to them. In Noah’s day this came as a result of God’s church mingling with the world and intermarrying with them.

“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5.

The descendants of Cain were the originators of city living; they built a city (Genesis 4:17). When a large population of people live in close proximity, crime, violence and every evil thing imaginable can happen. “And it repented the Lord that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them.” Genesis 6:6, 7.

“The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” Verses 11, 12. Can you imagine, the whole earth was corrupted? “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Verse 8.

Things were bad then, like they are today, with violence filling the land. The marriage institution is being attacked, and every day in the news we read of more murders. At the grocery store we have to walk through all the evil things before we get to the check out to buy food. The thoughts of men are evil continually, and we are being bombarded. Sin is all around us; it is everywhere, on billboards, on television and on radio. Violence is spoiling the land and the earth is becoming corrupted.

Look at Revelation 19:2. It says, “For true and righteous are His judgments: and He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand.” The Bible predicts again that the earth is going to be totally corrupt. “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him [the beast power].” Revelation 13:8. The entire world is going to worship the beast. You can read it again in Revelation 12:9, which says that the devil is going to deceive the entire world.

In Revelation 14, John sees in vision three messages going out to the entire world, just as it was in the days of Noah when all the world heard Noah’s message. Noah was a preacher of righteousness. “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12. John, looking into the future, sees this mass of people, and it seemed to him as if every single one of them had given his or her allegiance to the beast. But the angel said, “Here, look a little bit closer.” Like faithful Noah, he sees a people that are not worshiping the beast but give their allegiance to the God of heaven. They keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.

It is this group of people that we must be a part of to be ready when Jesus returns. While the rest of the world disregards God’s commandments, there is going to be a people who will obey God’s commandments. Noah was not alone in his stand for truth; there was another man who was keeping God’s commandments. He was a Seventh-day Adventist, and his name was Enoch.

Enoch lived in a corrupt world, but he was not tainted by the sin all around him. You might question in your mind just how it is possible to live in a corrupt world and not be corrupted. This is possible only when self is dead. Jesus said, “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” John 15:19.

Jesus said, “I have given them Thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” John 17:14–16. Jesus here is praying specifically about His disciples. He says, “They’re not of the world. They have had a conversion, and the world hates them because of it.” They hate the world.

Enoch lived in the world in an atmosphere that was tainted with sin. He was bombarded with it all around him, just like you and I are today. It was everywhere in the things that he saw and in the things that he heard. There is not a lot said about Enoch, but we have some insights from the Spirit of Prophecy that tell us how he was uncorrupted though he lived in a corrupt world.

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” Jude 14, 15.

Enoch believed there was going to be a judgment. He believed in the second coming of Jesus; he was a Seventh-day Adventist. Seventh-day Adventists have existed since the very beginning of time. You see, a lot of people think Adventist is an organization, but it is not. It is the name of a designated people who obey the commandments of God and who are looking forward to the second coming of Jesus. It is a designated name—a code word for the sons of God.

“By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5 Without faith it is impossible to please the Lord. Enoch lived by faith.

Indeed, as Revelation 14:12 says, “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” These people are like Enoch. Enoch is a real person, but he is also a symbol of God’s church near the end that will be translated without seeing death. By God’s grace, you and I can all be a part of it if we choose, but we need to live as Enoch lived.

Genesis 4:26 says, “then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.” There was a revival among the people of that land. It was not amongst the city dwellers but the people who lived in the country, and out of that line of people came Enoch. “And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years.” Genesis 5:21, 22. Methuselah means year of the flood, and Methuselah died in the year of the flood. What an amazing testimony of a man who walked with God for three hundred years! He was a man who walked by faith, and he pleased God. His walk with the Lord began when He had little Methuselah. As he held Methuselah in his arms, he began to realize the relationship that God wanted to have with him and that he wanted to have with God. “Enoch walked with God … begat Methuselah … and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not, for God took him.” Genesis 5:22–24.

The only way to live in a corrupt world, without being tainted by it, is to walk with God. The following will help you with that walk.

A Constant Conflict

It was through constant conflict and simple faith that Enoch walked with God. Be intentional to avoid the distractions in magazines when in the grocery store buying supplies. Make a covenant with your eyes to avoid the pictures or scantily dressed people. Listen to the still small voice and turn off the television when your conscience warns you. Walk with God as Enoch did; he was not sporadic, but constantly aware of the battle he faced and overcame the temptations with simple trust in God.

As it was in the days of Noah

Call on the name of the Lord. There is going to be a revival, and it was thus that Enoch walked with God. “It was not easier for Enoch to live a righteous life in his day than it is for us at the present time. The world at that time was no more favorable to growth in grace and holiness than it is now, but Enoch devoted time to prayer and communion with God.” The Review and Herald, April 15, 1909.

Life is a constant conflict, so do not let down your guard for even a moment. Spend time in prayer with Jesus. If you want to have victory in your life and live as Enoch did, develop habits of constant communion. We are in a spiritual war, so never go out without your armor (Ephesians 6). You are no match for the devil. Eve, who had far more intellectual power than we have today, tried to reason with him and lost. Spend time in prayer. “This enabled him [Enoch] to escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. It was his devotion to God that fitted him for translation.” Ibid. Enoch did not have a Bible, but he had the book of nature, which is God’s second Bible that teaches us of Him. If you want a deeper knowledge of God, go out in nature and learn how to commune with Him. There is no better place to spend time with Him and meditate upon what He has created.

Train Your Mind

Our minds are the battlefield here, but Enoch learned to control his thoughts. “Enoch’s case is before us. Hundreds of years he walked with God. He lived in a corrupt age, when moral pollution was teeming all around him; yet he trained his mind to devotion, to love purity. His conversation was upon heavenly things. He educated his mind to run in this channel, and he bore the impress of the divine.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 121.

It is impossible to develop purity while looking about at the corruption all around. It is a deception to think that you can be in this world and of the world and still be a Christian. It is impossible. This life is a constant conflict with sin. Enoch prayed and communed with God, and then he trained his mind to dwell upon only what was lovely. He kept his conversation on heavenly things. It is profitable, for us today, to train our lips to speak only of heavenly things on the Sabbath day. We have six days to talk about work, and we have one day to talk only about God, of His love and of what He is doing. Spend time training your thoughts, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). Train your mind and fill it with the word of God.

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” I Peter 1:13. What does it mean to gird up the loins of your mind? Let me give you an illustration. In Bible times, men wore flowing loose robes. If they had to run, they would pick up all the loose fabrics, gathering it up, and with a wide girdle or belt they would tie it around themselves.

If your mind starts to wander, bring it back to focus and center and don’t allow it to drift. The Bible says, “Gird up the loins of your mind.” God backs His word with promises. Paul said, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5. “We have the mind of Christ.” I Corinthians 2:16. Our mind is the battlefield, so don’t allow it to wander off into the forbidden paths of this world. Eve made this mistake. She found herself looking at the tree that God had forbidden. Her imagination began to wander, and she heard her thoughts picked up by a serpent in the tree. Keep focused!

A Stranger on Earth

Enoch was looking for a heavenly home for this world was not his home. He was what the Bible calls a pilgrim and a stranger in a strange world (Exodus 2:22).

Evangelist

Enoch won souls to the Lord. “Then at times he went forth to the inhabitants of the world with his God-given message.” Maranatha, 184. “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” Jude 14, 15.

  • Enoch was in a constant conflict with himself, the devil and the corruptions of this world.
  • Enoch prayed and communed with God in nature.
  • Enoch girded up the loins of his mind, training it to stay focused.
  • Enoch lived as though he was but a stranger in this world, a pilgrim passing through.
  • Enoch went out to win souls for the Lord.

“Enoch had temptations as well as we. He was surrounded with society no more friendly to righteousness than is that which surrounds us. The atmosphere he breathed was tainted with sin and corruption, the same as ours; yet he lived a life of holiness. He was unsullied with the prevailing sins of the age in which he lived. So may we remain pure and uncorrupted. He was a representative of the saints who live amid the perils and corruptions of the last days. For his faithful obedience to God he was translated. So, also, the faithful, who are alive and remain, will be translated. They will be removed from a sinful and corrupt world to the pure joys of heaven.” The Faith I Live By, 350.

Enoch was a representative of the saints that are going to live just before the second coming of Jesus.

1 ADAM, THE FIRST EVANGELIST

3 ENOCH

4 NOAH, A TEACHER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
