“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1, 2. We have no right to wantonly violate a single principle of the laws of health.” Counsels on Health, 50. Then, citing Daniel’s experience, Mrs. White continues: “He did not conform to the habits of the courtiers in eating and drinking, but purposed in his heart that he would not eat of the king’s meat nor drink of his wines. This was not a hastily formed, wavering purpose, but one that was intelligently formed and resolutely carried out. Daniel honored God; and the promise was fulfilled to him. ‘Them that honor Me I will honor.’ I Samuel 2:30. The Lord gave him ‘knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom,’ and he had ‘understanding in all visions and dreams’ (Daniel 1:17); so that he was wiser than all in the king’s courts, wiser than all the astrologers and magicians in the kingdom.

“Those who serve God in sincerity and truth will be a peculiar people, unlike the world, separate from the world. Their food will be prepared, not to encourage gluttony or gratify a perverted taste, but to secure to themselves the greatest physical strength, and consequently the best mental [and physical] conditions. . . .

“Excessive indulgence in eating and drinking is sin. Our heavenly Father has bestowed upon us the great blessing of health reform, that we may glorify Him by obeying the claims He has upon us. . . . Those who are looking for the soon appearing of their Saviour should be the last to manifest a lack of interest in this great work of reform. . . . An aimless life is a living death. The mind should dwell upon themes relating to our eternal interests. This will be conducive to health of body and mind. . . .

“The world should be no criterion for us. It is fashionable to indulge the appetite in luxurious food and unnatural stimulus, thus strengthening the animal propensities, and crippling the growth and development of the moral faculties. There is no encouragement given to any of the sons or daughters of Adam that they may become victorious overcomers in the Christian warfare unless they decide to practice temperance in all things. If they do this, they will not fight as one that beateth the air.” Ibid.

In this wonderful book, we are further counseled that, “It is a terrible sin to abuse the health that God has given us; for every abuse of health enfeebles us for life and makes us losers, even if we gain any amount of education.” Ibid., 186.

“In the preparation of a people for the Lord’s Second Coming, a great work is to be accomplished through the promulgation of health principles. The people are to be instructed in regard to the needs of the physical organism and the value of healthful living as taught in the Scriptures, that the bodies which God has created may be presented to Him a living sacrifice, fitted to render Him acceptable service. There is a great work to be done for suffering humanity in relieving their sufferings by the use of the natural agencies that God has provided, and in teaching them how to prevent sickness by the regulation of the appetites and passions. The people should be taught that transgression of the laws of nature is transgression of the laws of God.” Ibid., 206. [All Emphasis supplied.]

Recipe – Lemon Pie

1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup fresh orange juice
¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon fresh grated lemon rind
10 dates or ½ cup of packed, chopped dates
¼ cup water
1/3 cup cornstarch
¼ teaspoon sea salt

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend till smooth. Cook in saucepan on low heat, stirring constantly, till thick. Then pour into a backed cashew pie crust. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Food for Life – Nut Banana Loaf

“The word organic has a specific meaning in chemistry and describes any compound based on carbon. Carbon dioxide, methane, and butane, as well as fat, starch, sugar, and protein are examples of natural organic compounds. In addition to compounds found in nature, modern science has created synthetic organic compounds. Nylon, for example, is a synthetic made from compounds found in oats. Most synthetic fibers and plastic products are made from natural raw materials, and are thus called synthetic organic compounds.

“Drinking water contains both natural and synthetic organic compounds, and they can create health problems. Some organics are what nightmares are made of.

“The Hudson River Valley in New York State is a place of great scenic beauty. . . . The land rises in palisades on one side of the river, affording magnificent views. . . . The Sunday sailors who take their snarks and snipes for a run in the summer breeze can look into the water and see fish swimming in large schools. In fact, the number of fish seems to be increasing each year….Indeed, the Hudson looks as if it has defied the odds and remained pristine in spite of the chemicals dumped by the riverside industries. But looks are deceptive.

“The Hudson River is so polluted with chemicals that the river’s fishing industry was shut down by the state in February 1976. Toxins such as benzene, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and chloroform (among others) were found in such high quantities that fish caught in the Hudson are considered unfit to eat.

“A 1977 study by the Environmental Protection Agency identified 280 organic compounds in the waterways. A joint study by two environmental activist groups,…found that some of the most potent cancer-causing toxins and chemicals known to cause birth defects were present in the water that served 150,000 people in and around Poughkeepsie. And if the plans set forth by the Army Corps of Engineers are accepted, this water will serve 10 million additional people of the New York metropolitan area.

“Other guests at the chemical feast include: Philadelphians, who drink water from the Delaware River and are subjected to varying amounts of PCBs, a dangerous toxin. The former residents of Love Canal, a small housing development built on a filled-in canal near Niagara Falls. Their drinking water was contaminated by a landfill containing 82 chemical compounds, including 11 known or suspected carcinogens. Some residents of Canton, Connecticut, have been advised to buy bottled water because seven of the town’s wells contain extremely high levels of chemicals known to cause cancer in laboratory animals. Water is to Drink, by Carol Keough, 7–9.

Now we can begin to understand God’s final warning to His people that in the last days everything will be polluted, the air, the water, and the animals . . . everything! So people beware! It is an unsafe world out there, but for the protection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ over His chosen ones.

Recipe – Nut Banana Loaf

½ cup nuts, ground fine

½ cup Uncle Sam’s Cereal Flakes

½ cup ground dates

1 cup raisins, ground fine

2 ripe bananas

Mix ingredients thoroughly and put into baking pan.

Bake at 300–325° for 45 minutes.

Food for Life – Millet Patties

Pure, Soft Water, Continued

Exercise and a free and abundant use of the air and sunlight—blessings which Heaven has freely bestowed upon all—would give life and strength to the emaciated invalid.…” Counsels on Health, 54.

“Pure air, sunlight, abstemious-ness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power—these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature’s remedial agencies and how to apply them.” Ibid., 90.

“If you would have your homes sweet and inviting, make them bright with air and sunshine. Remove your heavy curtains, open the windows, throw back the blinds, and enjoy the rich sunlight, even if it be at the expense of the colors of your carpets. The precious sunlight may fade your carpets, but it will give a healthful color to the cheeks of your children. If you have God’s presence and possess earnest, loving hearts, a humble home, made bright with air and sunlight, and cheerful with the welcome of unselfish hospitality, will be to your family and to the weary traveler a heaven below.” Ibid., 196.

“Life in the open air is good for body and mind. It is God’s medicine for the restoration of health. Pure air, good water, sunshine, the beautiful surroundings of nature—these are His means for restoring the sick to health in natural ways. To the sick it is worth more than silver or gold to lie in the sunshine or in the shade of the trees.” Ibid., 166.

“It is not a denial of faith to use such remedies as God has provided to alleviate pain and to aid nature in her work of restoration.…There are many ways of practicing the healing art, but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God’s remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties.” Counsels on Health, 324.

“Nature will want some assistance to bring things to their proper condition, which may be found in the simplest remedies, especially in the use of nature’s own furnished remedies—pure air, and with a precious knowledge of how to breathe; pure water, with a knowledge of how to apply it; plenty of sunlight in every room in the house if possible, and with an intelligent knowledge of what advantages are to be gained by its use.…” Selected Messages, vol. 2, 289-289.

“It would have been better if, from the first, all drugs had been kept out of our sanitariums, and use had been made of such simple remedies as are found in pure water, pure air, sunlight, and some of the simple herbs growing in the field. Recipe – Millet Patties

1/2 cup cashews

1 cup distilled water

1–1/2 cups precooked millet

1 cup wheat germ

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 medium onion, chopped fine

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon Braggs Amino Acids

Blend cashews and water. Pour over millet, wheat germ, oats, and onion. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Form into patties and bake for 25–30 minutes at 325°.

Food for Life – Oat Date Bar Cookies

December! What a month of festivities! Pagan in origin and still pagan in philosophy, but nevertheless, we are surrounded by this element, and our children are bent to the ways of the world. Can we teach them the proper ways? I think we can. Instead of heaping the presents on them on this holiday, let us carefully keep in mind what Jesus went through while on this earth, and let us faithfully guard our children and their minds away from all earthly things to heavenly things. Let us keep His coffers full, instead of our own. God bless you and keep you during this holiday season.

“I should eat regularly of the most healthful food which will make the best quality of blood, and I should not work intemperately if it is in my power to avoid doing so.

“And when I violate the laws God has established in my being, I am to repent and reform, and place myself in the most favorable condition under the doctors God has provided—pure air, pure water, and the healing, precious sunlight.

“Water can be used in many ways to relieve suffering. Drafts of clear, hot water taken before eating (half a quart, more or less), will never do any harm, but will rather be productive of good.

“A cup of tea made from catnip herb will quiet the nerves.

“Hop tea will induce sleep. Hop poultices over the stomach will relieve pain.

“If the eyes are weak, if there is pain in the eyes, or inflammation, soft flannel cloths wet in hot water and salt, will bring relief quickly.

“When the head is congested, if the feet and limbs are put in a bath with a little mustard, relief will be obtained.

“There are many more simple remedies which will do much to restore healthful action to the body. All these simple preparations the Lord expects us to use for ourselves, but man’s extremities are God’s opportunities. If we neglect to do that which is within the reach of nearly every family, and ask the Lord to relieve pain when we are too indolent to make use of these remedies within our power, it is simply presumption. The Lord expects us to work in order that we may obtain food. He does not propose that we shall gather the harvest unless we break the sod, till the soil, and cultivate the produce. Then God sends the rain and the sunshine and the clouds to cause vegetation to flourish. God works and man cooperates with God. Then there is seedtime and harvest.

“God has caused to grow out of the ground, herbs for the use of man, and if we understand the nature of those roots and herbs, and make a right use of them, there would not be a necessity of running for the doctor so frequently, and people would be in much better health than they are today. I believe in calling upon the Great Physician when we have used the remedies I have mentioned.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 297.

Recipe – Oat Date Bar Cookies

2 cups coconut (unsweetened)

1/4 cup almond butter

l/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 cup date pieces, finely cut

1 cup chopped walnuts

2/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour

1/4 cup rolled oats

3/4 cup honey

Combine all ingredients, spread out into pan or form into cookies and bake at 350 degrees until light brown.

Food for Life – Lentil Soup

“That blasts of January would blow you through and through” Shakespeare.

Let us read some hints from our Lord as to the remedies for weather like this.

“I will tell you a little about my experience with charcoal as a remedy. For some forms of indigestion, it is more efficacious than drugs. A little olive oil into which some of this powder has been stirred tends to cleanse and heal. I find it is excellent. Pulverized charcoal from eucalyptus wood we have used freely in cases of inflammation. . . .

“Always study and teach the use of the simplest remedies, and the special blessing of the Lord may be expected to follow the use of these means which are within the reach of the common people. . . .

“On Thursday, Sister Sara McEnterfer was called to see if she could do anything for Brother B’s little son, who is eighteen months old. For several days he has had a painful swelling on the knee, supposed to be from the bite of some poisonous insect. Pulverized charcoal, mixed with flaxseed, was placed upon the swelling, and this poultice gave relief at once. The child had screamed with pain all night, but when this was applied, he slept. Today she has been to see the little one twice. She opened the swelling in two places, and a large amount of yellow matter and blood was discharged freely. The child was relieved of its great suffering. We thank the Lord that we may become intelligent in using the simple things within our reach to alleviate pain and successfully remove its cause.

“When Hezekiah was sick, the prophet of God brought him the message that he should die. The king cried to the Lord, and the Lord heard him, and sent the promise that fifteen years should be added to his life. One word from God, one touch of the divine finger, would have been enough to cure Hezekiah instantly. But instead, he was given directions to make a poultice of figs, and lay it upon the part affected. This was done, and Hezekiah was restored to health. It would be well to treasure this prescription which the Lord ordered to be used, more than we do.

“I am very sorry to learn that Sister C is not well. I cannot advise any remedy for her cough better than eucalyptus and honey. Into a tumbler of honey put a few drops of the eucalyptus, stir it up well, and take whenever the cough comes on. I have had considerable trouble with my throat, but whenever I use this I overcome the difficulty very quickly. I have to use it only a few times, and the cough is removed. If you will use this prescription, you may be your own physician. If the first trial does not effect a cure, try it again. The best time to take it is before retiring.…” Selected Messages, Book 2, 298–301.

January Recipe – Lentil Soup

2 tablespoons distilled water 

1 large onion, chopped 

2 cloves fresh garlic, minced 

1-1/2 cups lentils

3 quarts of water

1 large carrot, finely cut

1 stalk of celery, finely cut

1 large potato, diced

1 cup tomato sauce

1/2 cup cooked rice

1 teaspoon sea salt

Place distilled water into a soup pot, and gently sauté the onion and garlic for two minutes. Stir continually. Wash and rinse lentils and add them to the soup pot. Add the water, cut vegetables, and the rest of the ingredients with the exception of the salt and rice. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, and cook slowly for about one hour. Add the sea salt and let soup simmer a short while longer. Add cooked rice. Serve.

Food for Life – Remedies For Winter

“A brother was taken sick with inflammation of the bowels and bloody dysentery. The man was not a careful health reformer, but indulged his appetite. We were just preparing to leave Texas, where we had been laboring for several months, and we had carriages prepared to take away this brother and his family, and several others who were suffering from malarial fever. My husband and I thought we would stand this expense rather than have the heads of several families die and leave their wives and children unprovided for.

“Two or three were taken in a large spring wagon on spring mattresses. But this man who was suffering from inflammation of the bowels, sent for me to come to him. My husband and I decided that it would not do to move him. Fears were entertained that mortification had set in. Then the thought came to me like a communication from the Lord to take pulverized charcoal, put water upon it, and give this water to the sick man to drink, putting bandages of the charcoal over the bowels and stomach. We were about one mile from the city of Denison, but the sick man’s son went to a blacksmith’s shop, secured the charcoal, and pulverized it, and then used it according to the directions given. The result was that in half an hour there was a change for the better. We had to go on our journey and leave the family behind, but what was our surprise the following day to see their wagon overtake us. The sick man was lying in a bed in the wagon. The blessing of God had worked with the simple means used.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 299.

“‘My herb drink.—We need not go to China for our tea, or to Java for our coffee. Some have said: ‘Sister White uses tea, she keeps it in her house,’ and that she has placed it before them to drink. They have not told the truth because I do not use it, neither do I keep it in my house.…If you will come to my house I will show you the bag that contains my herb drink. I send to Michigan, across the mountains, and get the red-clover top.…

“I did not use tea when you were with us. I have always used red-clover top, as I stated to you. I offered you this, and told you it was a good, simple, and wholesome drink.…

“I do not preach one thing and practice another. I do not present to my hearers rules of life for them to follow while I make an exception in my own case.…

“I am not guilty of drinking any tea except red-clover-top tea, and if I loved wine, tea, and coffee, I would not use these health-destroying narcotics, for I prize health and I prize a healthful example in all these things. I want to be a pattern of temperance and of good works to others.” Ibid., 301, 302.

RECIPE – French Fruit Toast

¾ cup date rolls (chopped)

2 bananas

½ cup chopped coconut

¼ cup cashews (chopped)

1 teaspoon vanilla (non-alcoholic)

1 tablespoon whole wheat flour

¼ teaspoon sea salt

20 oz. can of crushed pineapple

1 loaf homemade bread

Place all ingredients (except bread) in blender and beat until smooth. Add any liquid, if mixture is too dry. Dip bread in the above mixture and place on a non-stick cookie sheet. Bake at 300–325 degrees for 30–45 minutes until lightly browned.

Food for Life – Evidences of the End

“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” —English Proverb

September 11, 2001, will forever be etched in our memory, as long as we have a breath of life within us! A more sobering thought is, what will be the next sign of His coming? As I peruse the Spirit of Prophecy each night upon retiring, I am made ever aware of the very shortness of time and the insecurity of our own lives from day to day.

Last Day Events, 83, states, “At the time when the danger and depression of the church are greatest, the little company who are standing in the light will be sighing and crying for the abominations that are done in the land. But more especially will their prayers arise in behalf of the church because its members are doing after the manner of the world.” Serious thoughts are they not? “Light has been given me that the cities will be filled with confusion, violence, and crime, and that these things will increase till the end of this earth’s history.” Ibid., 110. So we, as many are doing, need to find ways to move to the country. “I have seen the most costly structures in buildings erected and supposed to be fireproof, and just as Sodom perished in the flames of God’s vengeance so will these proud structures become ashes.…The flattering monuments of men’s greatness will be crumbled in the dust even before the last great destruction comes upon the world.” Ibid., 111.

“God is withdrawing His Spirit from the wicked cities, which have become as the cities of the antediluvian world and as Sodom and Gomorrah.…Costly mansions, marvels of architectural skill, will be destroyed without a moment’s notice when the Lord sees that the owners have passed the boundaries of forgiveness. The destruction by fire of the stately buildings, supposed to be fireproof, is an illustration of how in a short time earth’s architecture will lie in ruins.

“Men will continue to erect expensive buildings, costing millions of money. Special attention will be called to their architectural beauty and the firmness and solidity with which they are constructed, but the Lord has instructed me that despite the unusual firmness and expensive display, these buildings will share the fate of the temple in Jerusalem.” Ibid., 112.

“Gluttony and intemperance lie at the foundation of the great moral depravity in our world. Satan is aware of this and he is constantly tempting men and women to indulge the taste at the expense of health and even life itself. Eating, drinking, and dressing are made the aim of life with the world. Just such a state of things existed before the Flood. And this state of dissipation is one of the marked evidences of the soon close of this earth’s history.” Ibid., 22.

Recipe – Pocket Bread

1 tablespoon yeast 

1 1/4 cups warm distilled water 

1 teaspoon sea salt

3 1/2 to 4 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water and let work. Gradually add other ingredients to make a stiff dough. Knead until smooth and elastic.

Let rise, until double in bulk, then turn out on board. After dividing into 8 pieces, approximately 5″ in diameter, flatten each ball with a rolling pin. Place on baking sheet about 3/4″ apart and let rise until double in bulk. Bake at 400 degrees for 4 minutes. Change pan positions and bake an additional 4–6 minutes. To serve, cut in half and separate to create pockets. Place anything in them that suits your taste.

Food for Life – Granola and Roast

Recipe – Granola

In a large bowl, place the following ingredients:

8 cups rolled oats

1 cup coconut

1 cup chopped pecans

1/3 cup sesame seeds

In a separate bowl combine the following:

1 cup oil

1 cup honey

1/3 cup water

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix the wet and dry ingredients together. Spread in a large cake pan (17 x 20). Bake for 2 hours at 250 degrees, stirring two or three times during the baking process, until oatmeal is golden brown. If the granola mixture is quite thick, it may require a few more minutes of baking time to turn it golden brown.

Cool and enjoy with Sun Soy, juice, or berries. Dates, raisins, or other dried fruit may be chopped and added to the granola after it has cooled, if you like.

Raw granola can be made into a cookie by adding enough flour and water to be cookie-dough consistency and baking at 350 degrees until golden brown.

Recipe – Roast

1 pound tofu, crumbled

1 1/2 cans Vegeburger

6 slices wheat bread, crumbled

2/3 cup soy sauce

2/3–1 cup nutritional yeast

1/3 cup olive oil

1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

1 teaspoon sage

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon celery salt

1 1/2 teaspoon salt

Sauté the following ingredients in olive oil, and add to other ingredients in large bowl:

2 1/2 medium onions, chopped

1/2 green pepper, chopped

1 stalk celery, chopped

8 cloves garlic, minced

Mix all. Put in oiled casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Top with marinara sauce.

Food For Life – Curry Stew & Golden Waffles

Golden Waffles

2 cups water, soy milk or nut milk

2 cups rolled oats

2 Tablespoons whole wheat flour

2 Tablespoons sesame seeds

Blend well in blender then bake in waffle iron 8–10 minutes. Add water to thin the batter as it sets. Good made ahead and frozen in baggies. Warm in toaster or microwave straight from the freezer.

Malaysian Curry Stew

1 small onion

¼ cup curry powder

1 can coconut milk

Vegetables of your choice, diced, such as:

3–4 celery stalks, 2 potatoes, 1–2 tomatoes, 1 bell pepper, okra, etc.

2 Tablespoons McKay’s Chicken Seasoning or 1 Tablespoon salt

Honey to taste. If your curry is too spicy hot, add more honey.

Sauté onion in a small amount of oil in a 5–6 quart pot. Add ¼ cup curry powder and mix well. Fill the pot up to two-thirds full with water and bring to a boil. When water is boiling, add vegetables in order of their cooking time, i.e., potatoes first, celery, etc. However, add tomatoes with the potatoes as they give flavor to the stew. When you add the last vegetables, also add the rest of the ingredients: the coconut milk, chicken seasoning, and honey. You may add more curry powder depending on your taste. Cook until vegetables are done.

You can make curry sauce (as served in Thai restaurants) using this stew.

Mix ¼ cup of cornstarch with ½ cup of water, pour into the stew and cook for 2 minutes.

The stew will thicken, and you have sauce that can be served over rice.

Food for Life – Oatmeal Burgers

“Let several families living in a city or village unite and leave the occupations which have taxed them physically and mentally, and make an excursion into the country, to the side of a fine lake, or to a nice grove, where the scenery of nature is beautiful. They should provide themselves with plain, hygienic food, the very best fruits and grains, and spread their table under the shade of some tree or under the canopy of heaven. The ride, the exercise, and the scenery will quicken the appetite, and they can enjoy a repast which kings might envy.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 86, 87.

Recipes

Oatmeal Burgers

3 cups rolled oats 

3 cups water 

1/4 cup Braggs Liquid Aminos 

1/2 cup sunflower seeds

1 medium onion, chopped

1 4 oz can mushrooms

1/2 cup olives, sliced

Combine the rolled oats, water and Braggs Liquid Aminos; cook for five minutes. Add other ingredients and mix well. Form patties and place on cookie sheet sprayed with Pam. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, turning after 15 minutes. 12–15 burgers.

Ketchup

2 teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/3 cup lemon juice

2 cups tomato purée

1 cup tomato paste

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon paprika

1/8 teaspoon cumin

1/2 teaspoon sweet basil

1/4–1/3 cup water

Mix all ingredients in saucepan, stirring well. Bring to a boil and simmer 10 minutes.

Mustard

1 teaspoon turmeric

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1–2 Tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 cup soy mayonnaise

Dash parsley, chopped or dried

Dash garlic salt

Dash paprika

Stir all ingredients together until mixed well.

Lemonaise

1 cup water

1/3 cup Soyagen

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried parsley

1 teaspoon dill weed

2/3 cup olive oil (May vary, the more oil the thicker the product.)

1–3 Tablespoons lemon juice (Depending on your taste.)

Place water and all dry ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Add oil slowly. When blended, add lemon juice. Let set in blender a minute then store in a covered container. Keep refrigerated.
