“The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Proverbs 4:18.

Study Help: Counsels on Diet and Foods, 69–77,145–147; Testimonies, vol. 6, 326–328, 378, 379.

Introduction

“The light that the Lord has given on [health reform] in His word is plain, and men will be tested and tried in many ways to see if they will heed it. Every church, every family, needs to be instructed in regard to Christian temperance. All should know how to eat and drink in order to preserve health. We are amid the closing scenes of this world’s history, and there should be harmonious action in the ranks of Sabbath keepers.” Testimonies, vol. 6, 378.

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.” II Peter 1:19.

“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Thy face, O Jacob. Selah. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.” Psalm 24.

1 THE ORIGINAL PLAN

  • Where do we find God’s original plan for living? Genesis 1:26–28.
  • What was God’s original plan for the health of His creation? Genesis 1:29; 3:15, 18. Specify the different aspects of health instruction given in these verses.

Note: “In the beginning He [God] placed our first parents amidst the beautiful sights and sounds He desires us to rejoice in today. The more nearly we come into harmony with God’s original plan, the more favorable will be our position to secure health of body, and mind, and soul.” The Ministry of Healing, 365.

“In order to know what are the best foods, we must study God’s original plan for man’s diet. He who created man and who understands his needs appointed Adam his food. ‘Behold,’ He said, ‘I have given you every herb yielding seed, … and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food’ (Genesis 1:29, ARV). Upon leaving Eden to gain his livelihood by tilling the earth under the curse of sin, man received permission to eat also ‘the herb of the field’ (Genesis 3:18).

“Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.” Ibid., 295, 296.

“As far as possible we are to come back to God’s original plan. From henceforth my table shall be free from the flesh of dead animals, and devoid of those things in desserts which take much time and strength to prepare. We may use fruit freely, and in different ways, and run no risk of incurring the diseases that are incurred by using the flesh of diseased animals. We should bring our appetite under control, so that we shall enjoy plain, wholesome food, and have an abundance of it, that none may suffer hunger.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 488.

2 THE TEST

  • What detailed instruction did God give to Adam and Eve? Genesis 2:16, 17. What should the people of Israel bear in mind? Deuteronomy 8:2.

Note: “When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden, everything contributed to their enjoyment.” The Signs of the Times, February 24, 1898.

“Adam and Eve were placed upon trial, that it might be demonstrated as to whether they would obey the word of their Creator, or disobey His requirements. The Creator of man was his Father, and had an entire right to the service he could render. Body, soul, and spirit, man was the sole property of God. … He made it plain to them that by obedience to His holy law they would retain happiness, and finally be blessed with immortality. Eternal life should be theirs if they regulated their conduct according to the principles of the law of God. … Every provision was made whereby blessings might be secured to the human race, and but one mild restriction was placed upon the sinless pair to test their loyalty to God.” Ibid., October 8, 1894.

  • When put to the test, how did our first parents fall? Genesis 3:1–6; Romans 5:19; James 4:17; I John 3:4.

Note: “Eve had everything to make her happy. She was surrounded by fruit of every variety. Yet the fruit of the forbidden tree appeared more desirable to her than the fruit of all the other trees in the garden of which she could freely eat. She was intemperate in her desires. She ate, and through her influence, her husband ate also, and a curse rested upon them both.” Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4a, 120.

  • What happened because of the wrong choice made by Adam and Eve? Genesis 3:16–19; Romans 3:23.

Note: “The earth also was cursed because of their sin. And since the Fall, intemperance in almost every form has existed.” Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4a, 120.

3 CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

  • What was the long-term result of Adam and Eve’s choice? Genesis 6:11–13, 17. How is history being repeated? Matthew 24:37–39.

Note: “The same sins that brought judgments upon the world in the days of Noah, exist in our day. Men and women now carry their eating and drinking so far that it ends in gluttony and drunkenness.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 11.

  • How was the people’s diet changed after the Flood? Compare Genesis 1:29; 3:18 with Genesis 9:3, 4.
  • Why was a flesh diet permitted after 1500 years without it? Psalm 90:9, 10.

Note: “The eating of flesh meat was permitted as one of the consequences of the Fall. Before the Flood, no provision was made for the use of animal food.” This Day With God, 210.

“The diet appointed man in the beginning did not include animal food. Not till after the Flood, when every green thing on the earth had been destroyed, did man receive permission to eat flesh.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 374.

“God provided fruit in its natural state for our first parents. He gave to Adam charge of the garden, to dress it, and to care for it, saying, ‘To you it shall be for meat’ [Genesis 1:29]. One animal was not to destroy another animal for food. After the Fall, the eating of flesh was suffered in order to shorten the period of the existence of the long-lived race. It was allowed because of the hardness of the hearts of men.” Testimony Studies on Diet and Foods, 68.

  • What distinction, well known to Noah and his descendants, was to be observed with reference to the flesh diet? Genesis 7:2, 3, 8, 9.

Note: “Before [the Flood] God had given man no permission to eat animal food; He intended that the race should subsist wholly upon the productions of the earth; but now that every green thing had been destroyed, He allowed them to eat the flesh of the clean beasts that had been preserved in the ark.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 107.

4 THE WILDERNESS JOURNEY

  • What food did God provide for the people of Israel after their exodus from Egypt? Exodus 16:15, 35.

Note: “When God led the children of Israel out of Egypt, it was His purpose to establish them in the land of Canaan a pure, happy, healthy people. Let us look at the means by which He would accomplish this. He subjected them to a course of discipline, which, had it been cheerfully followed, would have resulted in good, both to themselves and to their posterity. He removed flesh food from them in a great measure. He had granted them flesh in answer to their clamors, just before reaching Sinai, but it was furnished for only one day. God might have provided flesh as easily as manna, but a restriction was placed upon the people for their good. It was His purpose to supply them with food better suited to their wants than the feverish diet to which many of them had been accustomed in Egypt. The perverted appetite was to be brought into a more healthy state, that they might enjoy the food originally provided for man—the fruits of the earth, which God gave to Adam and Eve in Eden.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 118.

  • What attitude did many Israelites take regarding their diet, and how did God respond to it? Numbers 11:4–6, 18–20; Psalm 78:18–31; 106:14, 15.

Note: “They [the children of Israel] murmured at God’s restrictions, and lusted after the fleshpots of Egypt. God let them have flesh, but it proved a curse to them.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 119.

  • What are we to learn from that event during the wilderness journey? Hebrews 3:12–19; I Corinthians 10:6–11; Psalm 78:18.

Note: “The travels of the children of Israel are faithfully described. … This faithful picture is hung up before us as a warning lest we follow their example of disobedience and fall like them.” Gospel Workers, 159, 160.

5 MANNA TODAY

  • Describe the progressive changes in the diet of Elijah. I Kings 17:4–6, 12–16; 19:6.
  • Instead of sending manna to His people in these last days, what has God given them? Romans 15:4; I Corinthians 10:31.

Note: “Again and again I have been shown that God is trying to lead us back, step by step, to His original design—that man should subsist upon the natural products of the earth. Among those who are waiting for the coming of the Lord, meat eating will eventually be done away; flesh will cease to form a part of their diet. We should ever keep this end in view, and endeavor to work steadily toward it. I cannot think that in the practice of flesh eating we are in harmony with the light which God has been pleased to give us. All who are connected with our health institutions especially should be educating themselves to subsist on fruits, grains, and vegetables. If we move from principle in these things, if we as Christian reformers educate our own taste, and bring our diet to God’s plan, then we may exert an influence upon others in this matter, which will be pleasing to God.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 119.

“I was again shown that the health reform is one branch of the great work which is to fit a people for the coming of the Lord. It is as closely connected with the third angel’s message as the hand is with the body.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 69.

  • In order to reach heavenly Canaan, in what state of mind should we, as God’s people, heed His instructions? Romans 15:6; I Corinthians 1:10; Philippians 1:27; 2:2.

Note: “Can He [the Lord] be pleased when half the workers laboring in a place, teach that the principles of health reform are as closely allied to the third angel’s message as the arm is to the body, while their coworkers, by their practice, teach principles that are entirely opposite?” Healthful Living, 32.

*Locusts are the common carob which grows in the Middle East.

PERSONAL REVIEW QUESTIONS

1 What was the original plan for healthy living?

2 What was the result of indulging the appetite contrary to God’s instruction?

3 In what way did God adapt His health plan?

4 Why did God feed His people with manna for so long?

5 Have I studied God’s health principles before? Am I willing now to not only study, but to change if necessary?

Teaching and Preaching

“Because of imprudence in eating, the senses of some seem to be half paralyzed, and they are sluggish and sleepy. These pale-faced ministers who are suffering in consequence of selfish indulgence of the appetite are no recommendation of health reform.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 417.

Better Food for God’s People

“God might as easily have provided [the Israelites] with flesh as with manna, but a restriction was placed upon them for their good. It was His purpose to supply them with food better suited to their wants than the feverish diet to which many had become accustomed in Egypt. The perverted appetite was to be brought into a more healthy state, that they might enjoy the food originally provided for man—the fruits of the earth, which God gave to Adam and Eve in Eden. It was for this reason that the Israelites had been deprived, in a great measure, of animal food.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 378.

The Object of Hygienic Reform

“Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic reform is to secure the highest possible development of mind and soul and body. All the laws of nature—which are the laws of God—are designed for our good. Obedience to them will promote our happiness in this life, and will aid us in a preparation for the life to come.” Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 120.

Key Text

“I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Psalm 139:14.

Study Help: Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 123–128; Testimonies, vol. 6, 369–379.

Introduction

“A pure and noble life, a life of victory over appetite and lust, is possible to everyone who will unite his weak, wavering human will to the omnipotent, unwavering will of God.” The Faith I Live By, 154.

“As brethren of our Lord, we are called with a holy calling to a holy, happy life. Having entered the narrow path of obedience, let us refresh our minds by communion with one another and with God. As we see the day of God approaching, let us meet often to study His Word and to exhort one another to be faithful unto the end. These earthly assemblies are God’s appointed means by which we have opportunity to speak with one another and to gather all the help possible to prepare, in the right way, to receive in the heavenly assemblies the fulfillment of the pledges of our inheritance.

“Remember that in every assembly you meet with Christ, the Master of assemblies. Encourage a personal interest in one another; for it is not enough simply to know men. We must know men in Christ Jesus. [Emphasis author’s.] We are enjoined to ‘consider one another’ (Hebrews 10:24). This is the keynote of the gospel. The keynote of the world is self.

“I would encourage those who assemble in little companies to worship God. Brethren and sisters, be not disheartened because you are so few in number. The tree that stands alone upon the plain, strikes its roots deeper into the earth, spreads out its branches farther on every side, and grows stronger and more symmetrical while wrestling singly with the tempest of rejoicing in the sunshine. So the Christian, cut off from earthly dependence, may learn to rely wholly upon God, and may gain strength and courage from every conflict.” Our High Calling, 166.

1 STUDY THE HUMAN BODY

  • God has given us instruction to study many things. What is first on His priority list? What is one of the first things we should learn and teach our children? Psalm 86:11.

Note: “Parents should seek to awaken in their children an interest in the study of physiology. From the first dawn of reason the human mind should become intelligent in regard to the physical structure. We may behold and admire the work of God in the natural world, but the human habitation is the most wonderful. It is therefore of the highest importance that among the studies selected for children, physiology occupy an important place. All children should study it. And then parents should see to it that practical hygiene is added.” Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 125.

  • Why is this study important? Psalm 119:73.

Note: “Since the laws of nature are the laws of God, it is plainly our duty to give these laws careful study. We should study their requirements in regard to our own bodies and conform to them. Ignorance in these things is sin.” Testimonies, vol. 6, 369.

“There are matters not usually included in the study of physiology that should be considered—matters of far greater value to the student than are many of the technicalities commonly taught under this head. As the foundation principle of all education in these lines, the youth should be taught that the laws of nature are the laws of God—as truly divine as are the precepts of the Decalogue. The laws that govern our physical organism, God has written upon every nerve, muscle, and fiber of the body. Every careless and willful violation of these laws is a sin against our Creator. How necessary, then, that a thorough knowledge of these laws should be imparted!” Child Guidance, 363.

2 “FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE”

  • I Corinthians chapter 12 is a lesson based on the physical body. What can we learn about its organization at different structural levels? I Corinthians 12:18, 14.

Note: “As in the study of physiology they [pupils] see that they are indeed ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14), they will be inspired with reverence. Instead of marring God’s handiwork, they will have an ambition to make all that is possible of themselves, in order to fulfill the Creator’s glorious plan. Thus they will come to regard obedience to the laws of health, not as a matter of sacrifice or self-denial, but as it really is, an inestimable privilege and blessing.” Education, 201.

  • Can one part of the body be affected without it influencing another? I Corinthians 12:26. What are we told about the study of the physical body?

Note: “The harmonious action of all the parts—brain, bone, and muscle—is necessary to the full and healthful development of the entire human organism.” Fundamentals of Christian Education, 426.

  • Why is it important to preserve in good health even the smallest parts of our organism? I Corinthians 12:25; Luke 16:10.

Note: “The endowments of mind and body are to be carefully guarded. Our gifts are not to be weakened by self-indulgence. Every power is to be carefully preserved, that it may always be ready for instant use. No part of the physical organism is to be weakened by misuse. Each part, however small, has an influence on the whole. The abuse of one nerve or muscle lessens the usefulness of the whole body. Those for whom Christ has given His life should bring their habits and practices into conformity to His will.” The Upward Look, 379.

3 THE BLOOD IS THE CURRENT OF LIFE

  • From where does the life necessary for each cell come? Leviticus 17:14; Deuteronomy 12:23.

Note: “In order to have good health, we must have good blood; for the blood is the current of life. It repairs waste and nourishes the body. When supplied with the proper food elements and when cleansed and vitalized by contact with pure air, it carries life and vigor to every part of the system. The more perfect the circulation, the better will this work be accomplished.” The Ministry of Healing, 271.

  • What is needed to get the blood with its oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body? Genesis 2:8.

Note: “Simple lessons in the use of the various organs of the body should be given to children to commit to memory. The idea that it is physical exercise that strengthens every organ and gives new life and nourishment to every part of the living machinery, should be firmly imprinted on the mind. This is the law that God has ordained shall govern the body. Every part must be exercised. The harmonious working of the whole is required in order for the members of a family to do service in the home, and help each other to acquire education and discipline. The brain must plan and devise, and the muscles must carry out the will of the brain.” Manuscript Releases, vol. 5, 222, 223.

“Perfect health depends upon perfect circulation.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 531.

  • What should we ask of God so that we will do what is best for our well-being? Psalm 86:11; I Corinthians 6:20.
  • Why does fermentation in the stomach affect the whole body?

Note: “Disturbance is created by improper combinations of food; fermentation sets in; the blood is contaminated and the brain confused.” Testimonies, vol. 7, 257.

4 DRUGS POISON THE BLOOD

  • Realizing the importance of good blood, against what else should we guard ourselves? Revelation 21:27; 18:23.

Note: “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

“And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived” (Revelation 21:27; 18:23). …

“When you understand physiology in its truest sense, your drug bills will be very much smaller, and finally you will cease to deal out drugs at all. The physician who depends upon drug medication in his practice shows that he does not understand the delicate machinery of the human organism. He is introducing into the system a seed crop that will never lose its destroying properties throughout the lifetime. I tell you this because I dare not withhold it. Christ paid too much for man’s redemption to have his body so ruthlessly treated as it has been by drug medication.” Medical Ministry, 229.

  • What should we use instead? Revelation 22:2.

Note: “The Lord has taught us that great efficacy for healing lies in a proper use of water. These treatments should be given skillfully. We have been instructed that in our treatment of the sick we should discard the use of drugs. There are simple herbs that can be used for the recovery of the sick, whose effect upon the system is very different from that of those drugs that poison the blood and endanger life.” Selected Messages, Book 2, 288. [Ellen White is here speaking of drugs that are poisons. Her statement would not apply to all medicines that are called drugs.]

5 MAKING RIGHT CHOICES

  • Who is responsible for the choices we make? Joshua 24:15, last part.

Note: “The Lord does not propose to save us in companies. Individually we are to make our choice. One by one we are to appropriate the grace of God to the soul, and one cannot decide for another what course he shall take.” The Faith I Live By, 154.

  • What should we remember in dealing with one another? Romans 14:13; 15:1; II Timothy 2:24, 25.

Note: “The people partook largely of the same spirit [of the Pharisees], intruding upon the province of conscience and judging one another in matters that lay between the soul and God. It was in reference to this spirit and practice that Jesus said, ‘Judge not, that ye be not judged’ (Matthew 7:1). That is, do not set yourself up as a standard. Do not make your opinions, your views of duty, your interpretations of Scripture, a criterion for others and in your heart condemn them if they do not come up to your ideal. Do not criticize others, conjecturing as to their motives and passing judgment upon them.” Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 123, 124.

  • Often it is thought that we should not speak to one another of things which may offend. What does the word of God say? Romans 15:14; Hebrews 3:13; James 3:2. But what should we do in the first place? Hebrews 12:13.
  • What biblical examples show that there is a place for church rules? Acts 15:28, 29; I Corinthians 5:11; Deuteronomy 21:20, 21.

PERSONAL REVIEW

1 Why should I care for the most seemingly unimportant parts of the body?

2 Am I studying the anatomy and physiology of the body as God instructed? Am I helping others to understand this study?

3 Am I where God wants me to be for the betterment of my physical, mental, and spiritual well-being?

4 Am I adding any poison to my system or only the good things which God has given?

5 Am I willing to be an example and help to others instead of being a stumbling block by living with wrong habits or attitudes?

Messengers of Mercy

“In matters of conscience the soul must be left untrammeled. No one is to control another’s mind, to judge for another, or to prescribe his duty. God gives to every soul freedom to think, and to follow his own convictions. ‘Every one of us shall give account of himself to God.’ No one has a right to merge his own individuality in that of another. In all matters where principle is involved, ‘let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind’ (Romans 14:12, 5). In Christ’s kingdom there is no lordly oppression, no compulsion of manner. The angels of heaven do not come to the earth to rule, and to exact homage, but as messengers of mercy, to co-operate with men in uplifting humanity.” The Desire of Ages, 550, 551.

Preparing Youth for a Healthy Life

“Wrong habits render the youth less susceptible to Bible instruction. The children are to be guarded against the indulgence of appetite, and especially against the use of stimulants and narcotics. The tables of Christian parents should not be loaded down with food containing condiments and spices.” Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 126.

Avoiding Health Dangers

“Thousands who are afflicted might recover their health if, instead of depending upon the drugstore for their life, they would discard all drugs and live simply, without using tea, coffee, liquor, or spices, which irritate the stomach and leave it weak, unable to digest even simple food without stimulation. The Lord is willing to let His light shine forth in clear, distinct rays to all who are weak and feeble.” Medical Ministry, 229.

The Healthy Reformer

Key Text

“Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” Luke 21:34.

Study Help: Counsels on Diet and Foods, 175–182, 368; Counsels on Health, 72–74; Child Guidance, 384–389, 399; The Sanctified Life, 20.

Introduction

“There are few who realize as they should how much their habits of diet have to do with their health, their character, their usefulness in this world, and their eternal destiny. The appetite should ever be in subjection to the moral and intellectual powers. The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 562.

“The prophet Malachi declares, ‘Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers’ (Malachi 4:5, 6). Here the prophet describes the character of the work. Those who are to prepare the way for the second coming of Christ are represented by faithful Elijah, as John came in the spirit of Elijah to prepare the way for Christ’s first advent. The great subject of reform is to be agitated, and the public mind is to be stirred. Temperance in all things is to be connected with the message, to turn the people of God from their idolatry, their gluttony, and their extravagance in dress and other things. The self-denial, humility, and temperance required of the righteous, whom God especially leads and blesses, is to be presented to the people in contrast to the extravagant, health-destroying habits of those who live in this degenerate age.” Counsels on Health, 72, 73.

1 EAT THE BEST

  • What is one fruit that is evidence that the Spirit of God dwells within? Galatians 5:22, 23; Philippians 4:5.
  • What is the inspired definition of “true temperance”?

Note: “True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful and to use judiciously that which is healthful.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 562.

“Keep the work of health reform to the front, is the message I am instructed to bear. Show so plainly its value that a widespread need for it will be felt. Abstinence from all hurtful food and drink is the fruit of true religion. He who is thoroughly converted will abandon every injurious habit and appetite. By total abstinence he will overcome his desire for health-destroying indulgences.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 457.

  • How do we understand what is harmful? Romans 12:2.

Note: “Those who eat and work intemperately and irrationally, talk and act irrationally. It is not necessary to drink alcoholic liquors in order to be intemperate. The sin of intemperate eating—eating too frequently, too much, and of rich, unwholesome food—destroys the healthy action of the digestive organs, affects the brain, and perverts the judgment, preventing rational, calm, healthy thinking and acting.” Child Guidance, 398.

“It is a mistake to suppose that muscular strength depends on the use of animal food. The needs of the system can be better supplied, and more vigorous health can be enjoyed without its use. The grains, with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood. These elements are not so well or so fully supplied by a flesh diet. Had the use of flesh been essential to health and strength, animal food would have been included in the diet appointed man in the beginning.” Ibid., 384.

2 WHAT YOU PERMIT, YOU PROMOTE

  • Is obedience a matter of convenience, taste, or principle? Matthew 5:19; James 2:10; Matthew 6:24.

Note: “God has spoken, and He means that man shall obey. He does not inquire if it is convenient for him to do so. The Lord of life and glory did not consult His convenience or pleasure when He left His station of high command to become a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, accepting ignominy and death in order to deliver man from the consequence of his disobedience. Jesus died, not to save man in his sins, but from his sins. [Emphasis author’s.] Man is to leave the error of his ways, to follow the example of Christ, to take up his cross and follow Him, denying self, and obeying God at any cost.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 250, 251.

  • What specific counsel applies to healthy digestion and discipline? Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Note: “The stomach becomes weary by being kept constantly at work, disposing of food not the most healthful. Having no time for rest, the digestive organs become enfeebled, hence the sense of ‘goneness,’ and desire for frequent eating. The remedy such require, is to eat less frequently and less liberally, and be satisfied with plain, simple food, eating twice, or, at most, three times a day. The stomach must have its regular periods for labor and rest; hence eating irregularly and between meals, is a most pernicious violation of the laws of health. With regular habits, and proper food, the stomach will gradually recover.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 175.

  • What is the process used in making the wine described in Proverbs 23:29–32? Should we allow this process to be reproduced in our stomach?

Note: “Disturbance is created by improper combinations of food; fermentation sets in; the blood is contaminated and the brain confused.

“The habit of overeating, or of eating too many kinds of food at one meal, frequently causes dyspepsia. … Disease takes the place of health.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 110, 111.

3 SANCTIFIED BY THE WORD OF GOD

  • What principle should we remember in choosing our food items? I Timothy 4:3–5. What foods were sanctified by the word of God in the original plan? Genesis 1:29.

Note: “If several varieties of food are placed before me [Ellen White], I endeavor to choose only those that I know will agree. Thus I am enabled to preserve clear mental faculties. I refuse to place in my stomach knowingly anything that will set up fermentation. This is the duty of all health reformers. We must reason from cause to effect. It is our duty to be temperate in all things.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 493.

  • After sin, God prescribed something to add to the dietary. What was it? Genesis 3:18.

Note: “But while we would recommend simplicity in diet, let it be understood that we do not recommend a meager diet. Let there be a plentiful supply of fruits and vegetables that are in a good condition. Overripe fruit or wilted vegetables ought not to be used. Vegetables and fruit should not be eaten at the same meal. At one meal use bread and fruit, at the next bread and vegetables. Thus we may have all the variety that we need to desire, and if we must have puddings and custards, let bread and these articles form the meal.” The Signs of the Times, September 30, 1897.

  • God gave His people flesh to eat after the flood. Later, when preparing them to enter the Promised Land, He gave them manna. How is their reaction paralleled in our days? Philippians 3:19; Isaiah 65:4, 5; 66:15–17; 22:12–14.

Note: “Those who transgress the laws of God in their physical organism will not be less slow to violate the law of God spoken from Sinai. Those who will not, after the light has come to them, eat and drink from principle instead of being controlled by appetite, will not be tenacious in regard to being governed by principle in other things. The agitation of the subject of reform in eating and drinking will develop character and will unerringly bring to light those who make a ‘god of their bellies.’ ” Counsels on Health, 39.

4 SOME THINGS CAN BE DECEITFUL

  • Knowing one’s natural disposition to like sweet things, what inspired direction is given? Proverbs 24:13; 25:27. Too much of a good thing is not good. What is the reason for the advice listed in Proverbs 25:16?

Note: “Hurtful food and drinks are partaken of in such a measure as to greatly tax the organs of digestion. The vital forces are called into unnecessary action in the disposal of it, which produces exhaustion, and greatly disturbs the circulation of the blood, and, as a result, want of vital energy is felt throughout the system. … Christian men and women should never permit their influence to countenance such a course by eating of the dainties thus prepared. Let them understand that your object in visiting them is not to indulge the appetite, but that your associating together, and interchange of thoughts and feelings, might be a mutual blessing.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 88.

  • What are the “dainties,” and why are they declared to be “deceitful”? Proverbs 23:3.

Note: “Sugar is not good for the stomach. It causes fermentation, and this clouds the brain and brings peevishness into the disposition.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 327.

  • What principle should we keep in mind when choosing what will enter our mouth? I Corinthians 10:31; Proverbs 23:1; Daniel 1:8.

Note: “To have firm religious principles is an inestimable treasure. It is the purest, highest, and most elevated influence mortals can possess. Such have an anchor. Every act is well considered, lest its effect be injurious to another and lead away from Christ. The constant inquiry of the mind is: Lord, how shall I best serve Thee, and glorify Thy name in the earth? How shall I conduct my life to make Thy name a praise in the earth, and lead others to love, serve, and honor Thee? Let me only desire and choose Thy will.” Testimonies, vol. 2, 129.

5 KEEPING THE APPETITE UNDER SUBJECTION

  • What has God promised to those who seek to do all of His will? Psalm 1:1–3; Revelation 22:14.

Note: “If Christians will keep the body in subjection, and bring all their appetites and passions under the control of enlightened conscience, feeling it a duty that they owe to God and to their neighbors to obey the laws which govern health and life, they will have the blessing of physical and mental vigor. They will have moral power to engage in the warfare against Satan, and in the name of Him who conquered appetite in their behalf they may be more than conquerors on their own account.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 35, 36.

“If we do the pleasure of our Creator, He will keep the human organism in good condition, and restore the moral, mental, and physical powers, in order that He may work through us to His glory. Constantly His restoring power is manifested in our bodies.” “Ellen G. White Comments,” The Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, vol. 1, 1118.

  • What is important to us in developing “appetite discipline”? I Corinthians 9:25–27.

Note: “[Deuteronomy 6:1, 2 quoted.]

“In this scripture we are taught that obedience to God’s requirements brings the obedient under the laws that control the physical being. Those who would preserve themselves in health must bring into subjection all appetites and passions. They must not indulge lustful passion and intemperate appetite, for they are to remain under control to God, and their physical, mental, and moral powers are to be so wisely employed that the bodily mechanism will remain in good working order.” Lift Him Up, 160.

  • Eating simply and at regular times helps us to discipline our habits. Who showed by example a similar lifestyle and prefigures the faithful of the last days? Matthew 3:1–4.

Note: “After the regular meal is eaten, the stomach should be allowed to rest for five hours. Not a particle of food should be introduced into the stomach till the next meal. In this interval the stomach will perform its work and will then be in a condition to receive more food.” Child Guidance, 389.

Expending Vital Force

“Intemperance in eating and drinking, intemperance in labor, intemperance in almost everything, exists on every hand. Those who make great exertions to accomplish just so much work in a given time, and continue to labor when their judgment tells them that they ought to rest, are never gainers. They are living on borrowed capital. They are expending vital force which they will need at a future time. When the energy they have so recklessly used, is demanded, they fail for want of it. Physical strength is gone, and mental power unavailable. They realize that they have met with loss. Their time of need has come, and their physical resources are exhausted. Those who violate the laws of health will sometime have to pay the penalty. God has provided us with constitutional force, and if we recklessly exhaust this force by continual overtaxation, our usefulness will be lessened, and our lives end prematurely.” The Signs of the Times, September 30, 1897.

Food for Life – Sugar, Sugar, Sugar!

From the smallest child to the aged, sugar is one of the most addictive pleasures that we as a people seem so unable to eliminate from our diet. We brag about being vegetarians, at least 49% of us, and a small part of us have even eliminated all animal products from our diet. A few more have given up caffeine in its various forms, but what about sugar? A few years ago we were up to about 130 lbs. per year, per capita. Now the average is 150 lbs. What are we doing to the temple which God has given us to use for Him in His service?

First let us review what God in His great mercy revealed to Ellen White in order to prepare a people to stand before Him, a perfect people without blemish.

“Sugar clogs the system. It hinders the working of the living machine.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 327. “The free use of sugar in any form tends to clog the system, and is not infrequently a cause of disease.” Ibid., 197. “Sugar is not good for the stomach. It causes fermentation, and this clouds the brain and brings peevishness into the disposition.” Ibid., 327. From the Natural Health Bulletin I quote, “If we jailed sugar instead of criminals, we might well have less crime in our society.” This study was done by a group of food-behavior specialists in Los Angeles County, headed by Dr. Bernard Mason of the County task Force on nutrition and behavior. They reported that a change from sugary “junk” food to “health food” helped control criminal tendencies. Basic Rule. “As little sugar as possible for the imprisoned,” says Dr. Mason. “The reason is that we believe it is responsible for many bizarre behavioral attitudes—even homicidal and suicidal.” He explains that 90% of criminals in custody have hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, because of the modern junk foods, alcohol, and dope that most criminals are on.” Dr. Mason made a diet change among the confined. No soft drinks and French fries wee given. Instead, the inmates were given raw zucchini, fresh fruit, broccoli, apples, bananas, peaches, and yogurt. Cooks were instructed how to use tofu in combination with brown rice, spaghetti, and meatless enchiladas. Dr. Mason reports, “There has been a change in the actions and attitudes of criminals, leading to increased stability, a more cooperative attitude, and a willingness to improve their lives.” He feels it was the “no sugar” rule, which resulted in correcting their hypoglycemia, which led to reduced mental disturbance and less crime.

According to a Scottish study conducted by G. Hems from the Department of Community Medicine, Foresterhill, Aberdeen, we read that “woman who eat less refined sugar, less total fat, less animal protein, and fewer animal calories have the best chance of avoiding breast cancer.” He analyzed breast cancer rates in relation to child-bearing, various differences in diet, and other factors in forty-one countries. For the first time, sugar was implicated as a possible cancer-causing substance.

When we refer back to God’s original diet for the human race, we find that “Adam and Eve came forth from the hand of their Creator in the perfection of every physical, mental, and spiritual endowment. God planted for them a garden, and surrounded them with everything that was lovely and attractive to the eye, which their physical necessities required. . . . A benevolent Creator had given them evidence of His goodness and love in providing them with fruits, vegetables, and grains, and in causing to grow out of the ground every variety of tree for usefulness and beauty.” Confrontation, 10. God created us with taste buds that we might enjoy the food we eat, but we have perverted those taste buds. Can they ever be normal again? Give God a chance, and you will see that in a short time those abnormal cravings cease and there will be true enjoyment in eating wholesome, unrefined, and nutritious food.

Christ is soon to return to take His faithful ones home. Forever remember that, “True conversion to the message of present truth embraces conversion to the principles of health reform.” Letter 62, 1909.

Food – Eat Right, Live Longer

Have you wondered if health care is worth it? Concensus of most modern medical men is that you should exercise, keep your weight down, avoid smoking cigarettes.

An increasing number of physicians are recommending against alcohol, high-cholesterol meats and white-flour bread.

These recommendations are based on “the latest medical knowledge” though I can show you the same prescription for health in a book that’s a hundred years old.

Ellen White authored that book. To this day Seventh-day Adventists accept her criteria. Since she has been proved right about so many things, perhaps we should examine what else she said.

The benefits of Ellen White’s teachings are now measurable.

There are 57,000 Adventists living in California. Recently the “dead ones” were “interviewed.”

The State of California, the United States Public Health Service, and the Adventist Church, Pacific Union Conference, analyzed available death certificates of all Adventists who had died over a five-year period.

98.8 percent of all such certificates were traceable. Judging from these records, Seventh-day Adventists have a life expectancy five to six years greater than other Californians.

70 percent fewer Adventists die from all types of cancer, 68 percent fewer from respiratory diseases, 88 percent fewer from TB and 85 percent fewer from pulmonary emphysema.

Among all Adventists there had been only nine cases of cancer of the lung and, further research revealed, each of these had at some time been a smoker.

Adventists have 46 percent less strokes, 60 percent less heart disease.

About 50 percent of Adventists are vegetarians. A new study has been launched by Drs. Richard Walden and Raymond West, of Loma Linda University, to compile comparative health figures for meat-eaters.

Perhaps a by-product of Adventist abstinence from alcohol is the finding that they have only about one-third (35 percent) as many accidents.

It has tended to reaffirm the faith of the faithful to discover that the most advanced scientific findings support what was written and taught by this amazing little lady, Ellen White, more than a hundred years ago.

If future scientific findings continue to support hers, let’s see what tomorrow’s doctors will be prescribing:

Ellen White advised against overeating, also against crash dieting. “I advocate no extremes.”

Whole-wheat bread, not white. Minimal sweets. “Sugar is not good for the stomach.”

She recommends grains, vegetables, fruits—especially apples. “Apples are superior to any fruit.”

She recommends against meat, coffee and tea.

And sorry, “no hot biscuits.”

If some of her recommendations sound extreme, imagine how they all must have sounded in 1863. Yet modern science continues more and more to say, “She was right!”

Paul Harvey News, March 1969.

Health – Diet in Relationship to Disease

Have you ever noticed that the word DeatH is mostly EAT? The thought that diet is directly related to one’s health is no longer confined to a few once labeled “fanatics.” There are more and more scientific studies that validate the belief that the cause of most disease can be traced to what a person eats and his/her lifestyle.

The ten leading afflictions that caused death in the United States in 1995 are here listed, beginning with the leading cause: heart and blood vessel disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, accidents, pneumonia/influenza, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, suicide, liver cirrhosis, kidney failure and others. Various forms of media have made us aware of the harmful effects of certain foods that lead to heart disease and cancer, but these facts are not really new. Note the physicians quoted in Abundant Health, by Julius Gilbert White (Health and Character Education Institute), a book written in 1951:

“The two chief causes of disease are food and drink.” Dr. Mikkel Hindhede, Denmark.

“Ninety per cent of all conditions outside of acute infections, are directly traceable to diet.” Dr. Osler, English physician.

“I believe I would not be far out of the way to say that diet may be said to be a factor in every disease to which many are heir.” Dr. Harvey W. Wiley.

Most diseases are related to what we eat. The book, Becoming Vegetarian, written by three registered dietitians examines the evidence that links diet to disease. “The Standard American Diet, which on occasion has been referred to as SAD, has been ‘on trial’ for its potential link to hundreds of millions of deaths in the United States” (page 11). Thousands and tens of thousands of pages of research have been submitted on both sides, examining the connection between diet and degenerative diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) delegated a panel of nutrition experts from around the world to assess the strength of this evidence. As a result, a 200 page paper “Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases,” was made public in 1990. The summary of that research reads: “Medical and scientific research has established clear links between dietary factors and the risk of developing coronary artery disease, hypertension, stroke, several cancers, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic diseases. This knowledge is now sufficiently strong to enable governments to assess national eating patterns, identify risks and then protect their population through policies that make healthy food choices the easy choices.” Ibid., 12.

Over a hundred years ago, a noted health educator, Ellen White wrote, “Intemperate eating is often the cause of sickness.” The Ministry of Healing, 235. In another book, Counsels on Diet and Foods, 141, she wrote that man is “digging his grave with his teeth.”

Let’s look at a few of these health problems, such as cancer, heart attacks/cardiovascular, diabetes, and arthritis and see just how diet does affect these diseases.

CANCER:

Many cancer patients experience gastrointestinal symptoms. Cancer can be the result of cells being destroyed due to poor blood. Example of foods causing poor blood: processed meats, sugar, refined flours, and fats.

HEART ATTACK:

Blood flow can be impaired as a result of certain kinds of food, and heart attacks can be caused by stress.

Example of foods that impair blood flow: fried foods, and the use of too much free flowing fats and salt.

DIABETES:

The pancreas is over worked as a result of our diet and one example is trying to digest refined foods.

Example of refined foods: processed foods and refined sugars and starches such as white bread, white flour and white flour products, and white sugar.

ARTHRITIS:

One cause of arthritis is obstruction in the body from waste matter and uric acid build up.

Example of problem foods: red meats, excessive sugar, caffeine, soft or cola drinks, chocolate and not enough water.

So we see that the wrong kinds of foods or an over consumption of certain kinds of foods can cause DIS-EASE.

Inspiration – A Needed Reform

If Seventh-day Adventists practiced what they profess to believe, if they were sincere health reformers, they would indeed be a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. And they would show a far greater zeal for the salvation of those who are ignorant of the truth.

Greater reforms should be seen among the people who claim to be looking for the soon appearing of Christ. Health reform is to do among our people a work which it has not yet done. There are those who ought to be awake to the danger of meat eating, who are still eating the flesh of animals, thus endangering the physical, mental, and spiritual health. Many who are now only half converted on the question of meat eating will go from God’s people, to walk no more with them.

In all our work we must obey the laws which God has given, that the physical and spiritual energies may work in harmony. Men may have a form of godliness, they may even preach the gospel, and yet be unpurified and unsanctified. Ministers should be strictly temperate in their eating and drinking, lest they make crooked paths for their feet, turning the lame—those weak in the faith—out of the way. If while proclaiming the most solemn and important message God has ever given, men war against the truth by indulging wrong habits of eating and drinking, they take all the force from the message they bear.

Those who indulge in meat eating, tea drinking, and gluttony are sowing seeds for a harvest of pain and death. The unhealthful food placed in the stomach strengthens the appetites that war against the soul, developing the lower propensities. A diet of flesh meat tends to develop animalism. A development of animalism lessens spirituality, rendering the mind incapable of understanding truth.

The word of God plainly warns us that unless we abstain from fleshly lusts (I Peter 2:11), the physical nature will be brought into conflict with the spiritual nature. Lustful eating wars against health and peace. Thus a warfare is instituted between the higher and the lower attributes of the man. The lower propensities, strong and active, oppress the soul. The highest interests of the being are imperiled by the indulgence of appetites unsanctioned by Heaven.

Great care should be taken to form right habits of eating and drinking. The food eaten should be that which will make the best blood. The delicate organs of digestion should be respected. God requires us, by being temperate in all things, to act our part, toward keeping ourselves in health. He cannot enlighten the mind of a man who makes a cesspool of his stomach. He does not hear the prayers of those who are walking in the light of the sparks of their own kindling (Isaiah 50:11).

Common Errors in Diet

Intemperance is seen in the quantity as well as in the quality of food eaten. The Lord has instructed me that as a general rule we place too much food in the stomach. Many make themselves uncomfortable by overeating, and sickness is often the result. The Lord did not bring this punishment on them. They brought it on themselves, and God desires them to realize that pain is the result of transgression.

Daily abused, the digestive organs cannot do their work well. A poor quality of blood is made, and thus, through improper eating, the whole machinery is crippled. Give the stomach less to do. It will recover if proper care is shown in regard to the quality and quantity of food eaten.

Many eat too rapidly. Others eat at one meal varieties of food that do not agree. If men and women would only remember how greatly they afflict the soul when they afflict the stomach, and how deeply Christ is dishonored when the stomach is abused, they would deny the appetite, and thus give the stomach opportunity to recover its healthy action. While sitting at the table, we may do medical missionary work by eating and drinking to the glory of God.

To eat on the Sabbath the same amount of food eaten on a working day, is entirely out of place. The Sabbath is the day set apart for the worship of God (Exodus 20:4), and on it we are to be specially careful in regard to our diet. A clogged stomach means a clogged brain. Too often so large an amount of food is eaten on the Sabbath that the mind is rendered dull and stupid, incapable of appreciating spiritual things. The habits of eating have much to do with the many dull religious exercises of the Sabbath. The diet for the Sabbath should be selected with reference to the duties of the day on which the purest, holiest service is to be offered to God.

Eating has much to do with religion. The spiritual experience is greatly affected by the way in which the stomach is treated. Eating and drinking in accordance with the laws of health promote virtuous actions. But if the stomach is abused by habits that have no foundation in nature, Satan takes advantage of the wrong that has been done, and uses the stomach as an enemy of righteousness, creating a disturbance which affects the entire being. Sacred things are not appreciated. Spiritual zeal diminishes. Peace of mind is lost. There is dissension, strife, and discord. Impatient words are spoken, and unkind deeds are done; dishonest practices are followed, and anger is manifested—and all because the nerves of the brain are disturbed by the abuse heaped on the stomach.

What a pity it is that often, when the greatest self-denial should be exercised, the stomach is crowded with a mass of unhealthful food, which lies there to decompose. The affliction of the stomach afflicts the brain. The imprudent eater does not realize that he is disqualifying himself for giving wise counsel, disqualifying himself for laying plans for the best advancement of the work of God. But this is so. He cannot discern spiritual things, and in council meetings when he should say Yea, he says Nay. He makes propositions that are wide of the mark, because the food he has eaten has benumbed his brain power.

Relation of Health Principles to Spirituality

The failure to follow sound principles has marred the history of God’s people. There has been a continual backsliding in health reform, and as a result God is dishonored by a great lack of spirituality. Barriers have been erected which would never have been seen had God’s people walked in the light.

Shall we who have had such great opportunities allow the people of the world to go in advance of us in health reform? Shall we cheapen our minds and abuse our talents by wrong eating? Shall we transgress God’s holy law by following selfish practices? Shall our inconsistency become a byword? Shall we live such unchristianlike lives that the Saviour will be ashamed to call us brethren (Hebrews 2:11)?

Shall we not rather do that medical missionary work which is the gospel in practice, living in such a way that the peace of God can rule in our hearts? Shall we not remove every stumblingblock from the feet of unbelievers, ever remembering what is due to a profession of Christianity? Far better give up the name of Christian than make a profession and at the same time indulge appetites which strengthen unholy passions.

God calls upon every church member to dedicate his life unreservedly to the Lord’s service. He calls for decided reformation. All creation is groaning under the curse. God’s people should place themselves where they will grow in grace, being sanctified, body, soul, and spirit, by the truth. When they break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will have a clearer perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful change will be seen in the religious experience.

The apostle plainly states that those who reach a high standard of righteousness must be temperate in all things. The Lord sends this message to His people: “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly: so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (I Corinthians 9:24, 27).

“It is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying, But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:11–14).

The Review and Herald, May 27, 1902.

Evidence of a Christian

“For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” I Samuel 16:7 ESV

Man cannot read the heart of another. The only evidence people have to identify a Christian is by their conduct and outward appearance. Before He left this earth Jesus said to His disciples: “You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8.

The Bible has not left those who desire to represent Him to others in ignorance as to how they should behave and present themselves to be a witness for Him.

The Christian’s Speech

Jesus was on trial. “Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, ‘You also were with Jesus of Galilee.’ But he denied it before them all, saying, ‘I do not know what you are saying.’ And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, ‘This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.’ But again he denied with an oath, ‘I do not know the Man!’ And after a while those who stood by came to him and said to Peter, ‘Surely you also are one of them, because your speech betrays you.’ ” Matthew 26:69–73.

They knew he was a follower of Jesus by the way he spoke. In an attempt to prove to them he was not connected in any way, “Then he began to curse and swear …” (verse 74). That seemed to be the end of the matter. By cursing and swearing he gave evidence he was none of Christ’s, for a disciple of Jesus does not use those words.

A friend of mine worked for a time as an auto mechanic at the Ford dealership in Fargo, North Dakota. The shop where he worked had many other auto mechanics. One day, another mechanic came to him enquiring about his religion. He had noticed that when a wrench slipped and he hit his knuckles, he refrained from swearing and cussing like the others. His speech betrayed who he was.

People should be able to tell from the way you talk that you are a Christian. We live in a world where people are very careless with their choice of language, discussing and saying all sorts of things that should never be said. Though people cannot read your heart, by listening to you talk, they should be able to determine that you are a Christian. Ellen White wrote: “A large share of life’s happiness is dependent upon our manners and actions toward others. The sharp word must be left unspoken. The passionate words must be quenched in the love of Jesus Christ; for if this dross is not cleansed from the soul, there is no hope of eternal life. The selfish temper, and tirade of passionate words is placed in the same dark list with swearing.” The Voice of Speech and Song, 144.

Do people say when you are not around, “I know that person is a Christian because he or she never loses his/her temper or says the sharp word”? Is it evident to others that you are a Christian?

Concerning our speech, Jesus said in Matthew 10:32, 33, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father Who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father Who is in heaven.”

How do you confess Christ? “He who would confess Christ must have Christ abiding in him. He cannot communicate that which he has not received. The disciples might speak fluently on doctrines, they might repeat the words of Christ Himself; but unless they possessed Christlike meekness and love, they were not confessing Him. A spirit contrary to the spirit of Christ would deny Him, whatever the profession. Men may deny Christ by evilspeaking, by foolish talking, by words that are untruthful or unkind. They may deny Him by shunning life’s burdens, by the pursuit of sinful pleasure. They may deny Him by conforming to the world, by uncourteous behavior, by the love of their own opinions, by justifying self, by cherishing doubt, borrowing trouble, and dwelling in darkness. In all these ways they declare that Christ is not in them.” The Desire of Ages, 357.

We are told in Testimonies, vol. 5, 305: “There is in human nature a tendency to run to extremes and from one extreme to another entirely opposite.”

It is easily seen when other people go to extremes, but how hard is it to recognize when we do it ourselves! There is in human nature a tendency to go off the road into the ditch on one side and then pass over, never stopping in the middle, into the ditch on the other side. Ellen White said, “Many are fanatics. They are consumed by a fiery zeal which is mistaken for religion, but character is the true test of discipleship.” Ibid.

The Christian’s Appearance

People judge whether or not we are Christians by the way we dress. There was a sister who talked to Ellen White about the reform dress and how she was doubting the testimonies of the church because of comments that were made to her about the reform dress. Ellen White said, “This was because the persons who carry matters to extremes had been cautioned not to make the dress question a test of Christian fellowship. What influence do these things have to undermine the confidence in my testimonies! It is not the testimony that is at fault, but perverse human nature.” Pamphlet 104, 12.

Dress is one of the areas where people have a tendency to go to extremes, although people do judge whether you are really a Christian by your outward appearance.

The Christian’s Judgment

People make judgments about others on how they spend time in recreation and amusement. This is another area where people tend to go to extremes one way or another.

Ellen White wrote in Testimonies, vol. 1, 565: “There are persons with a diseased imagination to whom religion is a tyrant, ruling them as with a rod of iron. Such are constantly mourning over their depravity and groaning over supposed evil. Love does not exist in their hearts; a frown is ever upon their countenances. They are chilled by the innocent laugh from the youth or from anyone. They consider all recreation or amusement a sin and think that the mind must be constantly wrought up to just such a stern, severe pitch. This is one extreme. Others think that the mind must be ever on the stretch to invent new amusements and diversions in order to gain health. They learn to depend on excitement, and are uneasy without it. Such are not true Christians. They go to another extreme.”

The Christian’s Diet

How we eat and drink affects what others think of our Christianity. Diet is another area in which people have the tendency to go to terrible extremes, either on one side or the other. If I never ate foods that I have been told not to eat, what foods could I eat? The answer is, “Nothing!” That is not an exaggeration.

In the 1950s I ran into Seventh-day Adventists who said, “We have to get back to the Eden diet.” And the Eden diet did not include vegetables, so they were eliminated from their diet. Shortly after that I heard, “You should never use sugar.” So sugar is gone. I was very fortunate, by the way, that I had a very wise mother who didn’t go off on all these tangents. Then in the 1970s, they said, “The one class of food that you can’t eat is fruit.” So fruit’s gone. By then it was 1971 and I had a church member who told me he was going to quit eating bread and anything that contained wheat.

I have heard lately that a lot of people in our community have decided not to eat wheat, and that’s fine if you replace it with something else. Prevention Magazine came out with a whole series of articles to help people quit eating bread. The titles of these articles were, “Do Not Eat Bread.” All kinds of horror stories were cited. A few years later a physician came out with a diet to help people lose weight and said, “What you must do is avoid all foods that are high in carbohydrates.” Well, if you do that, you eliminate all legumes and all grains from your diet.

Then again in the 1970s, there was a fellow by the name of Pritikin that came out with a new diet that was supposed to cure almost every disease. He said that you must not eat foods high in fat, like nuts, and seeds, avocados, and no oil or salt.

Now let’s just go down the list. If you are not going to eat any vegetables, no sugar, no fruit, no oil, and no salt, no wheat, and no high carbohydrate food, no nuts, no seeds, and no oil, what are you going to eat?

Ellen White wrote: “Because it is wrong to eat merely to gratify perverted taste, it does not follow that we should be indifferent in regard to our food. It is a matter of the highest importance.” Counsels on Heath, 118.

It is also a matter of the highest importance that we do not go to extremes one way or the other. She said, “No one should adopt an impoverished diet. Many are debilitated from disease and need nourishing, well-cooked food. Health reformers, above all others, should be careful to avoid extremes. The body must have sufficient nourishment.” Ibid.

She also said: “Do not go to extremes in regard to the health reform. Some of our people are very careless in regard to health reform. But because some are far behind, you must not, in order to be an example to them, be an extremist. You must not deprive yourself of that class of food which makes good blood. Your devotion to true principles is leading you to submit yourself to a diet which is giving you an experience that will not recommend health reform. This is your danger. When you see that you are becoming weak physically, it is essential for you to make changes, and at once. Put into your diet something you have left out. It is your duty to do this.” Letter 37, 1901.

Some people have gone to such extremes in regard to diet that it has become a disgrace and their religion has become disgusting to other people.

Ellen White wrote to this person: “Do not have a meager, poor diet. Do not let any one influence you to have the diet poverty-stricken. … The great backsliding upon health reform is because unwise minds have handled it and carried it to such extremes that it has disgusted in place of converting people to it.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, 211, 212.

The Christian’s Recreation and Amusement

On July 4, in Dalhart, Texas, during the dust storms of 1934, a pastor named Joe Hankins of the First Baptist church decided that in spite of the dust, they needed a revival. So they went into the church, dusted off the seats, and started a revival, with about a hundred young people plus the other church members. The pastor started by asking what was wrong with card playing and dancing. He then preached against them both. At the close of the sermon, about a hundred young people came up and signed a pledge, vowing never to dance or play cards. So, where did this Pastor Hankins get the idea a Christian shouldn’t play cards or dance? The Baptist Church was not alone with those teachings. The Methodist church also was opposed to card playing, dancing and gambling.

John Wesley formulated a list of general rules for the members of his society because he believed they needed concrete standards as well as ideals. So the Methodist church taught the same as the Baptist church taught. Their ideas came from the Bible. It is not that the church is against recreation and amusement. A child is not expected to simply work all the time. They could not endure it. Every child should have access to recreation and amusement, but like every other choice in the world, there are good and bad kinds of recreation and amusement that require a choice to be made. How do you tell which recreation and amusement is all right and which is not?

Paul said, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8.

The first requirement of recreation and amusement is, “Is it true?” Are you looking at television, or videos, or Internet or things that are not true? Many people are looking at things that do not even meet the first requirement for a Christian, yet they want to be known by Christ’s name. This is not to condemn the Internet or television, but you want to make sure that what you are looking at is true. A documentary and a drama are two completely different things. Are you looking at what is right or are you looking at people committing sin? Study for yourself and apply the principles of Philippians 4:8.

The Christian’s Dress and Adornment

Christian dress and adornment have caused many people, Christians and non-Christians alike, great consternation. Ezekiel 28 is about Lucifer or Satan. He is described here as being the real king of Tyre, which was one of the wicked cities of antiquity. “You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created. You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.” Verses 13–15.

Verse 17: “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.” Covered with all manner of precious stones, Lucifer became proud. Malachi says that the day is coming when all the proud will be stubble (Malachi 4:1). Pride is at the root of the sin problem.

Consider the great harlot woman “who sits on many waters” (Revelation 17:1) and how she is dressed. “The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup.” Verse 4. She is covered with jewelry.

Jewelry itself is not the problem. God made the jewels. The redeemed will walk on golden streets and live in a city that has foundations made of precious stones and gates made of pearl. They will have access to more jewels and precious stones than anybody in this world.

But before anyone walks the streets of gold, pride has to be eradicated. The Bible gives us counsel that because of our fallen human nature, we all struggle with pride. So while on this earth we need to lay those things aside.

God told Jacob to go up to Bethel and dwell there. “And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.’ So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree.” Genesis 35:2–4.

In Exodus the Lord told Moses: “ ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’ So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments.” Exodus 33:5, 6.

“ ‘I will punish her for the days of the Baals to which she burned incense. She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry, and went after her lovers; but Me she forgot,’ says the Lord.” Hosea 2:13.

“Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” I Peter 3:3, 4.

In the New Testament, the apostles forbid the wearing of gold or expensive clothing. Notice what Paul said about it: “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.” I Timothy 2:9, 10.

Probably the biggest problem with our clothing in Christendom today and especially in western countries like the United States is simply the lack of it. The Bible describes someone as naked and shameful if they do not have enough clothes on.

Ellen White wrote: “I had an interview with a sister who wore gold, and yet professed to be looking for Christ’s coming. We spoke of the express declarations of Scripture against the wearing of gold. But she referred to where Solomon was commanded to beautify the temple, and to the statement that the streets of the city of God were pure gold. She said that if we could improve our appearance by wearing gold, so as to have influence in the world, it was right. I replied that we were poor fallen mortals, and instead of decorating these bodies because Solomon’s temple was gloriously adorned, we should remember our fallen condition, and that it cost the suffering and death of the Son of God to redeem us. This thought should cause in us self-abasement. Jesus is our pattern. If He would lay aside His humiliation and sufferings, and cry, ‘If any man will come after Me, let him please himself, and enjoy the world, and he shall be My disciple,’ the multitude would believe and follow Him. But Jesus will come to us in no other character than that of the meek, crucified One. If we would be with Him in Heaven, we must be like Him on earth. The world will claim its own; and whoever will overcome, must leave what belongs to it.” Life Sketches of Ellen G. White, 113, 114.

Millions of people are being ruined because of the clothes they wear. “Showy, extravagant dress too often encourages lust in the heart of the wearer and awakens base passions in the heart of the beholder. God sees that the ruin of the character is frequently preceded by the indulgence of pride and vanity in dress. He sees that the costly apparel stifles the desire to do good.” Testimonies, vol. 4, 645.

The Christian’s Diet

God is so interested in all that we eat and drink that we need not be ignorant in this regard. Genesis 1:29 says, “God said, ‘See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.’ ” That was the original diet of the human race. However, when man sinned, his diet was changed. “Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.” Genesis 3:18. A more precise translation would say, “You shall eat the green herb of the field.”

When I first started studying nutrition back in the 1950s, I thought that God had left the human race in such abject ignorance about vitamins, resulting in so many health problems. Millions of people lost their eyesight and had all kinds of problems because they did not get certain vitamins. No one knew anything about vitamins in 1950 and as I studied I wondered why God left the human race in such ignorance. Well, obviously He didn’t. We just did not pay careful attention to what He said. He told us what to eat in Genesis 3:18. If everybody had regularly eaten the green herb of the field, which includes foods like spinach, broccoli, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale and other foods, there would have been far less suffering from diseases caused by vitamin deficiencies. God did not tell us about vitamin A in Genesis 3:18. He just told us what to eat.

In Genesis 9 after the flood man was given permission to eat flesh food, though not all flesh food. Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 explain the distinction between clean and unclean flesh foods.

Many people believe that the health law was for the Jews and was done away with at the cross. In a dream, Peter saw the sheet filled with all kinds of unclean animals lowered down. “And a voice came to him, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But Peter said, ‘Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.’ ” Acts 10:13, 14. Clearly, Peter had not been given instruction since the resurrection that he could now eat anything he wanted. He continued to abstain from unclean foods. This dream, by the way, actually had nothing to do with eating. It was an object lesson to explain to Peter that the gospel was to go to the Gentiles as well as to the Jews.

Then in Acts 15:20, it says, “But that we write to them [the Gentiles] to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.” The Gentiles were taught that certain flesh meats were never to be eaten.

Both the Old and New Testaments give instruction about eating the wrong thing. For everything that God has given instruction, there is a reason that man does not immediately discover. For several thousand years man did not understand why God said in Genesis 3:18, that after the fall it was necessary to eat the green herb of the field and he suffered the consequences.

The Lord is going to have a people in the last days who, by faith live according to Bible principles and reflect the One Who left the glories of heaven to walk on this earth to show them the way of salvation. They will stand out against the crowd and be identified as Christians in all their actions.

Will you be a Christian?

Health – Calcification and Acidification

A vegetarian diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds is the best way to prevent hardening of the arteries and having an acidic body. Diet is just one of the eight laws of health that are designed to keep this mortal body free of disease. The others are exercise, pure water, sunshine and temperance in all things that are healthful, fresh air, proper rest, and trust in God.

A diet that contains excessive protein causes calcification or hardening of the arteries causing the arterial walls to lose their elasticity. It is a sign of aging, which appears as a result of the disturbance in the metabolism and an unhealthy diet.

During calcification, calcium is withdrawn from the bones and deposited in vessels and tissues. This process causes the bones to become porous and fragile, often resulting in fractures. The tissues, blood vessels, and scar tissue accumulate deposits.

Autopsies have shown that calcification occurring in various parts of the body is a common problem for many people today. It is indicated elsewhere in the body with the appearance of calculus on the teeth and is confirmed in living subjects by CT scans. It increases with age in coronary arteries of both healthy and symptomatic people. It is influenced by vitamin C intake, and by many other diet and lifestyle variations. It is responsible for a multitude of disorders such as kidney stones, atherosclerosis, calcified gall stones, dental calculus, spurs, dysfunction of the heart valves, hardening of the pineal gland and other endocrine glands, ovarian disease, calcification of the joints, inflammatory disorders, fibrocystic problems, and many more.

Calcification is preceeded by or accompanied by five sub-clinical effects:

  1. Acidemia
  2. Free calcium excess
  3. Chronic inflammation
  4. Connective tissue degeneration
  5. Oxidative stress

All of these defects are a result of lifestyle violations. When God’s laws of health are violated, the pH of the body fluids generally tend toward acid. The scale that is used for measuring the pH, or hydrogen ion concentration, is from 0 to 14, with 7 being the neutral point. Below 7 is acidic; above 7 is alkaline. The optimal pH of the body’s fluids, such as the blood and urine, is 7.4, slightly alkaline. Outside of this range the body’s activity is no longer optimal and the metabolism is out of balance. The pH of the body is largely influenced by metabolic byproducts and our diet. Thus, pH is directly affected by the various categories of food that we eat and the internal mechanisms involved in their processing. Some foods that are acid in their composition, such as lemons, can become alkalinizing following metabolization by the body. Accordingly, it is important to become more aware of the impact that various foods and our eating habits have on the internal environment of the body.

An acidic pH can occur from an acid-forming diet, emotional stress, and toxic overload as well as immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals stored in other parts of the body. If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, a buildup of acids in the cells will occur.

The reason acidosis is more common in our society is mostly due to the typical standard diet, which is far too high in acid producing animal products, such as meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Additionally, we eat acid-producing processed foods like white flour and sugar and drink acid-producing beverages like coffee, soft drinks, and cola. We use too many drugs which are acid forming; and we use artificial chemical sweeteners, which are all poison and extremely acid forming. One of the best things we can do to correct an overly acid body is to clean up the diet and lifestyle.

An acidic balance will decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease its ability to repair damaged cells, decrease its ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and increase susceptibility to fatigue and illness.

A blood pH of 6.9, which is only slightly acidic, can induce coma and death. The body’s effort to maintain an arterial blood pH of 7.4 overrides just about every other function. Let us consider the common practice of many people who drink colas to show how the body compensates.

Cola upsets the pH balance

A glass of cola has a pH of approximately 2.6. It would take approximately 10 liters of pH 10 alkaline water to neutralize one glass of pH 2.6 cola. When a glass is added to 45 liters of water with a pH of 7.4 (remember the blood is 7.4), the cola will acidify the entire solution, resulting in a pH of 4.6. When a person drinks a glass of cola, the arterial blood starts to acidify, dropping to 7.39, 7.38, 7.37, 7.36, and so on. By the time it reaches 7.35 the oxygen level in the blood has reduced by 65%. This condition is known as acidemia. In an effort to prevent death, the body will draw phosphates from the bones to alkalize the blood. This will correct the pH fairly quickly, but calcium will be freed from the bones and will need to be eliminated from the system. After drinking a glass of coke, calcium can be measured in the urine, along with sodium, magnesium and other important minerals. If the calcium is not excreted quickly, it will be deposited on the bones, in organs, muscle tissue and many other places. Wherever calcification occurs, other toxins are soon deposited into the surrounding tissue. Eventually excessive blood will be sent in to cleanse the diseased tissue, resulting in chronic inflammation.

An acidic system means oxidation which means decay. Excess acidity can cause numerous disturbances such as weakening of the skin, hair, nails, teeth, and bones, deterioration of the digestive tract, leaky gut syndrome, candida, allergies, excitability of the nervous system, sciatica, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, muscular spasms and cramps, enhances susceptibility to infections, (bacterial and viral), chronic fatigue, blockage of certain minerals which become unavailable and increased risk of cancerous cells proliferating.

To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline-forming foods and 40% acid-forming foods. To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods. Generally, alkaline-forming foods include most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs and seasonings, and seeds and nuts. Generally, acid forming foods include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains, and legumes.

A healthy diet does not need to be complicated. God has provided in abundance a large variety of healthy foods to satisfy all tastes from which to choose.

Health – The Effect of Diet on the Brain

We have only one brain and it would be well for each of us to keep it in good thinking order. For the brain to function at maximum capacity it must be supplied with good, nourishing food. What you eat affects the mental as well as the physical health. Our brains need to be in good health so that we may glorify God in all that we do and say. Having said that, we need to realize that food taken into the body also affects our brain health. Researchers studied over 950 brains for five years and came up with some very interesting information on how to maintain our brain’s health. With all of the talk about the increase of dementia and Alzheimers it would be beneficial to pay close attention to what this article is suggesting to keep our brains healthy. The following article is called:

Eating green leafy vegetables keeps your brain strong

“Something as simple as eating more leafy veggies could significantly slow down cognitive decline and keep your brain healthier for a longer period of time. A new study found that nutrients and vitamins found in plants such as spinach, kale, collards and mustard greens help keep your mental abilities sharp.

“Researchers studied 950 [people] over five years on average to see why our brains start to lose their potency, and what we could eat to prevent that.

“ ‘Losing one’s memory or cognitive abilities is one of the biggest fears for people as they get older,’ said Martha Clare Morris, Sc.D., assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center and leader of the research team. ‘Since declining cognitive ability is central to Alzheimer’s disease and dementias, increasing consumption of green leafy vegetables could offer a very simple, affordable and non-invasive way of potentially protecting your brain from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.’

“The type of food they found had the most impact was green, leafy vegetables. People who ate 1–2 servings a day had the cognitive abilities of a person 11 years younger. In terms of nutrients, they found that vitamin K, lutein, folate and beta-carotene were likely doing the heavy lifting.

“ ‘Our study identified some very novel associations,’ said Morris, who will present the research at the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Annual Meeting during Experimental Biology 2015. ‘No other studies have looked at vitamin K in relation to change in cognitive abilities over time, and only a limited number of studies have found some association with lutein.’ Other studies have linked folate and beta-carotene intake with slower cognitive decline.

“Participants were aged 81 on average, and researchers calculated their total nutrient intake; they also accounted and corrected for age, sex, education, smoking, genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease and participation in physical activities when estimating the effects of diet on cognitive decline.

“ ‘With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,’ said Morris. ‘Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.’

“Aside for these vegetables, other good sources of vitamin K, lutein, folate and beta-carotene include brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Now, the team is trying to figure out what are the mechanisms through which the vitamins keep the brain fit.” www.zmescience.com/medicine/mind-and-brain/leafy-green-brain-06072015/

Let’s keep our minds alive to the glory of God. Let’s return to a simple diet loaded with God’s simple foods with plenty of greens included!

We are truly “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)!
